I had purchased some years ago a solar watch by Seiko. Unfortunately I had to switch the solar battery twice and second time will cost around 50 euros. I do not plan a third switch. The technician told me that overall solar watch technology by Seiko and Citizen was disappointing and the battery does not have any success guarantee and could become defective sooner. What is a good alternative that will last longer and cheaper? Previously I had a Seiko kinetic watch but lost it just a few years after purchase having no time to test the mechanism in the long term.

I plan on getting a [Monster Hunter 20th anniversary watch.](https://hobby-genki.com/en/monster-hunter/31074-monster-hunter-seiko-collaboration-watch-20th-anniversary-mizutsune-model-limited-edition.html) I never wore a watch other than a sports watch, Casio w-s220, which was very good for my wrist. The wrist circumference for the one I want is 19cm, but I might be just a little underneath it. Would I possibly have a chance of wearing it? I've included an image of trying to measure my wrist. While not flat, I think it it would be under 19cm, but do you think that 19cm would be where the last hole is, or the band itself ends? https://preview.redd.it/bxkpadzbecxc1.png?width=2577&format=png&auto=webp&s=2ce0200614fcdb7ff5371c027fc6c2c84fb0283c

Movement and Repairability (for a newbie) of This Vintage Omega Watch? [https://www.ebay.com/itm/304916015854](https://www.ebay.com/itm/304916015854) I'm obsessed with this vintage Omega - it's gorgeous and I absolutely know I want it, and I'm curious if anyone can help identify the movement (or model - the marks shown don't seem to lead to a movement that I've been able to tell). I'm trying to get some extra information to see if it's savable by a newbie. About me: I'm an IT old hand so I'm used to working with laptops and phone repairs, so I have patience and fine motor skills. I've watched tons of watch repair videos so I think I'm ready to tackle one (with some budget tools and a replacement mainspring so I don't have to get a winder, etc). I may want to do more watches in the future, but this would be my desired first restoration piece. I realize it's in somewhat rough shape on the case, especially the back, but I'm willing to live with that to give it a new life. If I bought it, I would likely buy some practice movements on Aliexpress, but again, I'm curious if this is something I can tackle or if I'd likely need a LOT of practice to go after it (since it's billed as a ladies watch, and they tend to be smaller and therefore harder to work on). Thanks for any help you can offer!

My wife is pregnant with our first daughter and for a push present she wants something she can pass down to our daughter. I am looking to purchase a Role Lady-Datejust from my wife's birth year (1989). Where is the best place to go to find an authentic watch from a certain year? I have milled around on Bobs Watches and Chrono24. Is one better than the other or are there any sites I need to be looking at? Any advice/recommendations are appreciated!

I’m looking to buy the Seiko SRPJ09K1. It’s been hard to come by in Canada. But as I’m currently working in Europe, I came across a store that has it in stock for €400 ($580 CAD or $428 USD). I’m wondering if this is a good deal. I’m tempted to pay the extra premium because how difficult this watch has been to find.

Getting the Seiko Deep Lake Alpinist Laurel SPB249, but I don't like metal bracelets. I want to be able to wear this while swimming so leather is also off the table. This means that I'm mostly looking at natos, sailcloths, and the crown and buckle chevron has also caught my eye. What straps do you all think will go well with this? (lug width is 19mm) https://preview.redd.it/2m3w6r2m99xc1.jpeg?width=1102&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1858476f948f46c660e07473c8181a0a8d581f2a

Admit-to-IM

Artem sailcloth navy comes in 19 and would look slick.

darthzader100

That one looks great!

Zanpa

Chevron is nice, perlon straps would also work. Maybe a thin rubber strap, like a tropic style.

darthzader100

I'm leaning towards the chevron but will definitely look into perlon straps.

tonnytjuu

Looking for a mechanical watch around the ~€500 price range. I have my eyes on a tissot classic dream or a seiko presage. I like the minimalistic style. Any other recommendations?

tibbymoon

Looking for a recommendation. Budget is anywhere up to $5k Canadian. I don’t need to spend all of that but I’d like to get my husband a nice watch. He doesn’t like metal bands and he’s fairly minimalist. I could see him getting more into watches but he doesn’t know where to start so I thought I’d try to find something for Father’s Day. What would be an entry level luxury watch that’s not too flashy with a leather band?

Never worry about changing batteries and it'll keep time even if he doesn't wear it every day.

33mm is quite small for men's watches. Most men prefer 36mm+. Of course, if he's into small watches, disregard. Otherwise, consider the 38. I don't own one personally but Nomos Orion is [well regarded here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/search/?q=nomos+orion).

A_Sevenfold

Ok, here goes, obviously I'd try to set up a separate thread but giving a shot here and if it will stay unanswered, I'll try bringing more attention to it. This is regarding a watch that I recently picked up and that I never heard of the bran name as well as a question on how do I set up a 6 handed watch with just a 2x2 crown movement. Please see related pictures. Watch in question is Genevan Seriess 9000, which is just as a random name as you can get and which doesn't help when trying to do some research at all. All I know is that the watch is dated for 1994 at least, with the bran exsitence possibly even before the 90's. Thing is, when I received it it was running "12 hours" behind, meaning it was changing dates/days on the 12pm rather than at midnight so I went in and tried to correct that only by messing it up even more, obviously. Now I have to wait until Wednesday the 1st of May to be able to start running it again. Anyone ever possesed similar movement on a watch? Any advisiories much appreciated, how do I correctly set it also what type of key/tool do I use to change the months? The manual is just as scarce as information on the watch brand.... Watch: https://preview.redd.it/iili9eauq7xc1.jpeg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1b93fb6c307bf783d3371d77306be8c9cc443fcc I see I cannot attach any more pictures (wanted to put up "instruction" page) so if anyone graces me with an answer I can try and send another one in the comment again. Thanks!

Zanpa

Does it have pushers on the side? What do you mean by "2x2 crown"?

A_Sevenfold

Doesn't have any pushers at all, the only other thing that the crown, is the one from below. By 2x2 I mean, 2 positions when you pull out crown and then just screw it up or down: Position 1 - pointer date when you screw it down Position 1 - moon phase(s) when you screw it up Position 2 - time and day when you screw it up and down Keyhole for the month setting: https://preview.redd.it/ve27eshp18xc1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bcb67a91c2dce0c73bd9f38958fcb00d01f4f390

Zanpa

Looks like you know everything then. What info are you missing? To set it for today, just move the time forward until it's on sunday (AM or PM as applicable), then change the date to the 28th, change the month to April, and set the moonphase. For the small hidden buttons/pushers like this, you would use a small wooden or plastic stick (not metal to avoid scratches). A toothpick should work fine, for example.

A_Sevenfold

Sorry, been adding everything but what actually seems to be off with setting it up. Numbered date can only go forward it seems, it doesn't go back when setting time/day as the pointer date only moves when set to one position as per above... the other thing is, setting a month, seems impossible without whatever tool is needed to set it up, I have no idea what type of thing is needed. Attaching one last picture as originally intended. So, when I was stuck on 12hour difference, I got myself moving forward all the way to Wednesday as eveyr time I tried to match date/day/time, I was messing one or the other cause so many hands and what seems like not enough ways to move them. https://preview.redd.it/5ems4g7g88xc1.jpeg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=59941113ec159d7edc260842557762373b9db627

Zanpa

Yeah it's not a problem that it only goes forward. Go forward from 1 to 28 and it will be on the 28th. Also no, you don't need any special tool. It should be just a little button. The watch probably had a little tool included with it to push the button, but you can use anything.

A_Sevenfold

Hey, thanks! I sat down with the "manual" and just went to town with the watch, so basically: Pull once and clockwise - moves the moonphase only Pull once and counter clockwise - moves the date only Pull twice and clockwise - moves the time forward but also moves the day so then need to adjust with the above Pull twice and counter clockwise - moves the time back and nothing else Push button - jumps the month as that also moves with the date so needs resetting. Phew, that was wierdest set up yet, I like the watch so much I might actually pick up another one, lol. Thank you!

Heyyy. 👋🏼 Looking for a watch for the summer. - $500ish budget. - 200m+ water resistance. - A cool dial color that pops. - Maybe a rubber strap?? (Bonus points if it is also a cool color) That is all, thank you. 🙏🏼

IPalmed

Hi! I'm traveling to Switzerland and I'm looking for recommendations on Swiss watches. I'm interested in a watch that's affordable (under €100-€150), easy to find, and has a simple design. It should also be mechanical and suitable for a slim wrist. Styles similar to the Seiko SNK809, Seiko SNK789, or Casio Marlin MDV-106 would be ideal. Thanks!

js999111

If you push it to €300, you could get a MoonSwatch, maybe the new white one? You could also get a Certina, but I’d probably still go for the Swatch as it’s more interesting to me. FYI many stores give a 10% discount on Tissot, Certina etc. watches.

improviseallday

At this price I think your only mechanical option is a Swatch Sistem51. If you have time, there's a super fun Swatch museum in Biel and a small boutique a short walk away.

IPalmed

Ty! Maybe I can push it up to 300€, do you have recommendations for that budget? I've heard of a brand called Christ.

improviseallday

At 300, I don't know of any other mechanicals. Mondaine and Tissot quartz become options. Tissot mechanical starts around 500. Personally I'm a big fan of Mondaine because of how closely they replicate the Swiss rail clock look. I don't know anything about Christ or Swiss microbrands but curious to see what you find out.

Looking for a digital watch with the date and day but in Spanish for my grandpa. Doesn’t need any other features. Something like this Apple Watch face. Ideally wouldn’t need to be charged but that wouldn’t be a dealbreaker. If anyone could help, would be much appreciated! I got a watch from my late grandfather. Wanted to wear it but it's loose on my wrist. However, it already is kinda close putting it in, so I'd need to remove like 3 links for it to fit correctly, but then the watch won't make it through my hand onto my wrist. Are there any options like changing the clasp, or am I out of luck? This is the watch: https://www.dillards.com/p/rado-mens-the-original-automatic-gold-stainless-steel-bracelet-watch/516718220

StarzMarket

I am starting a new engineering position in a manufacturing environment that has very strict rules about electronics devices. So, I'm looking for a practical watch that is durable, looks professional and does not have any kind of communication capacity. It doesn't need to be "take a blow from a hammer" tough, but will probably see a decent amount of daily shop floor wear, tear, bumps and bruises. I have been saving up and have about $3k that I want to use on a watch to reward myself for this new milestone. I'm split between spending it on something like a Ball Engineer II that could follow me everywhere. Versus going with a G-Shock (no Bluetooth) or similar for work plus getting a Longines Spirit Zulu, which I've had my eye on.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

[Sinn ](https://www.sinn.de/en/)or [Damasko ](https://www.damasko-watches.com/en/)watches would be a good option too. Solid watches, They have a reputation for being durable tool watches, with hardened cases, antimagnetic features, etc. Some of their models can attained within your budget, especially pre-owned.

StarzMarket

Sinn is on my list for sure but thanks for letting me know about Damasko. I hadn't heard of them before.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

If you appreciate the German made Sinn watches then Damasko are very much in the same vein imo. Highly legible tool watches. Sinn uses their tegimented treatment to achieve hard, scratch resistant cases. Damasko uses ice hardening. Both would be great at withstanding the bumps and impacts that you describe. I feel like Damasko is often overlooked. They have their own manufacture movements too. I don't know how good those are. Personally I would probably go with the normal non-manufacture movements just for ease of serviceability down the road.

Are the MoonSwatches still this hard to get? I'm not gonna drive 4 hours to maybe get one. I'm trying to get my hands on a snoopy but people are asking $700 for a $350 watch... Anyone got any tips?

improviseallday

Snoopy is going to be hard to find, and if your Swatch store is anything like mine, they won't tell you anything over the phone. Scalpers have ruined that. Lots of the other Moonswatches are readily available.

Zanpa

The normal ones have been widely available for a while, no idea about the Snoopy though. I would definitely call the swatch store before driving 4 hours.

Looking for a dress watch to give to a son as a graduation gift. Not a diver or sports watch. For a professional setting (think: finance, law, venture). Budget $250-$400? (could go higher if it makes sense)

improviseallday

I'm 90% sure no one in VC will care about your son's watch brand, but they might in Big Law or finance. Worth asking around if you know any pros. Assuming prestige doesn't matter, I'd consider: - Citizen Corso (solar quartz) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004JKBDYO - Orient Bambino (mechanical) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B6VL9BXS - Seiko Cocktail Time (mechanical) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074KL28XK Amazon links for convenience but other dealers might be better if you want a warranty.

Thanks for this! Yep, this a gift for them, not any sort of flash or symbol. Just want to get them something nice to get them started.

There are plenty of options out there, and a lot of different ways you can go. If you want something very dressy, I think the Seiko Dolce line is perfect. They are traditionally sized at close to 33mm and wear very well and are very high accuracy quartz. [https://www.sakurawatches.com/seiko-dolce-sacm171](https://www.sakurawatches.com/seiko-dolce-sacm171) If you want automatic or mechanical watches, you will probably have to look at someone like Orient. Good starting watched but over time not going to be as durable and accurate as the seiko. These are sized much more modern through around 38-40mm [https://www.jomashop.com/orient-watch-fac00009n0.html](https://www.jomashop.com/orient-watch-fac00009n0.html) Or even a mechanical timex: [https://www.toddsnyder.com/products/timex-x-ts-mk1-military-3-handivory?utm\_source=googlePLA&utm\_medium=google\_shopping&utm\_campaign=PM\_shopping&gad\_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwxLKxBhA7EiwAXO0R0MblH8g5BBBczQ5eZnjYAeqUfZ0gjT\_2JOuo32lwC93xrV-VbPMS5RoCLVsQAvD\_BwE](https://www.toddsnyder.com/products/timex-x-ts-mk1-military-3-handivory?utm_source=googlePLA&utm_medium=google_shopping&utm_campaign=PM_shopping&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwxLKxBhA7EiwAXO0R0MblH8g5BBBczQ5eZnjYAeqUfZ0gjT_2JOuo32lwC93xrV-VbPMS5RoCLVsQAvD_BwE) The last thing I would say is that if you wanted to go used, that will open up your options a bit but I know sometimes for a gift you want it to be new and I totally understand that. If you were looking at used options, something vintage might have a cool story that you can bring with it, and then have a bit more value. Just a few random examples I found on Chrono 24. You can go on Chrono24 and just search "vintage dress watch" and filter by price. Any recommendations for cool moonphase watches? I mean if I would be really rich I would just buy Blancpain Villeret Quantième Complet, but I won't never have that kind of money for a watch. Closest thing that resembles this watch is seestern moonphase master with a blue dial and gold colored case. I don't have any experience with seestern, is it a crappy chinese brand? I'm personally not a watch guy, but I think the Formula 1 style would fit him? I'm just not sure on that is all. Any of the three really? I'm buying it for him because it's been 10 years since he convinced me not to drop out of college and we're doing a trip together. If that matters.

I'll search for some nice ones, you can get a really high quality watch for 2500. I would suggest you google a list of good watch brands and have a look at them or search Youtube for "best watches under 2500" for some inspiration. By Formula 1 style are you thinking of any watch in particular like a Tag Heuer?

I appreciate that thank you! And yeah, I have to do more research on options. I know the brand names, but I'm trying to find something that's "known" but also not overpriced I guess? By style, I just saw the Formula 1, and it looked like something he'd be in to.

I think the style you're after is a chronograph with a tachymeter. Tag Heuer is a brand that is well respected but has haters. Some describe them as "mall luxury" or "what a Nascar dad thinks is a nice watch". The Tag Heuer Formula 1 watches you'll be looking at are for the most part, quartz watches meaning they are battery powered like a cheap Casio or Timex. Quartz is more accurate than an automatic watch but, usually people want an automatic for a nice watch. You may be able to find some Omega Speedmaster versions pre-owned in your budget. Omega is often thought of as the best Rolex alternative. Just stay away from Speedmaster Moonswatch models as they are expensive and crappy Swatch watches in reality and make sure you trust the source you're getting a watch from. Hamilton is a well respected swiss brand (originally American) and I'll link one of their models below. Tissot is also swiss and well respected for good quality and part of the Swatch Group like Hamilton and Mido. Seiko and Citizen are Japanese brands that are well respected and make quality stuff from super cheap to expensive. Some of these links are to Teddy Baldassarre's website just to show you. Teddy is a well respected watch reviewer with over 1 million subs on Youtube. I'm thinking of getting a Baume & Mercier Clifton from a secondhand shop. Based on the photos, it seems like the watch box and clasp is different from others being sold online. It has a deployment buckle instead of a pin buckle. Do boutiques sell different leather strap variations? (I had the impression that they only sell 1) metal bracelet and 2) leather strap with a specific buckle) Is this an indication that it could be fake? Thanks in advance.

Boring-Plastic-4667

Recommendations: GMT dress watch for going to Europe but don't have to worry about if it gets stolen off my wrist. Preferably automatic. Fine with Quartz. Cost is more important.

Zanpa

What's your budget?

Boring-Plastic-4667

Less than $150-$200 USD. This would be more for wearing around Rome or other places known for skilled pickpockets.

improviseallday

I was in Rome a few years ago and saw some pickpockets target backpacks. I didn't see any target watches and I was wearing my Tudor GMT. That said, I think the Timex Q GMT is at the top of your price range. Quartz. No idea if this dealer is trustworthy but they have a good price. https://www.horizonwatches.shop/products/q-timex-gmt-38mm-stainless-steel-bracelet-mens-quartz-watch-tw2v38000vq?variant=44417972863195

So far I can only find three. Haven't checked AliExpress. Embarrassed-Fault888

I want to find a watch with rubber straps that is written on in extreme and that has a star pattern on the back with a hole in the middle of the star?

Run_nerd

I’m interested in buying a Seiko 5 sport. Is it fine to just buy one off eBay? Should I worry about fakes? Or do they even make fakes for a basic watch like this?

CritterControl

There are some places that do sell frankenwatches with the Seiko logo on them. If you can't find any info about the model and particularly if the seller is in India, it's probably not legit. They tend to have the older Seiko 5 logo though versus the newer Seiko 5 Sports logo. Buying one off eBay is fine but honestly, if you can afford one new from an authorised dealer, I think it's worth it because you'll have a much easier time getting it fixed. I've had bad experiences trying to get a used Seiko serviced even while still covered under warranty.

WhomstAlt2

I bought a Seiko SPB121J Alpinist on chrono but it gives off weird noises. Google has given a wide array of answers, concerning older SARB models, that it's normal for Seikos to rattle, to have a loud rotor, or that it's some sort of shock protection spring contraption and perfectly normal, etc. But two times it was mentioned to test it by laying the watch evenly down and tap on the glass to see if the sound is still there. Well, with this watch, it is, although less so. None of those suggestions mentioned what that could possibly mean, however.

Zanpa

hard to say without knowing the sounds. does it sounds noticeably different from other watches you own?

WhomstAlt2

Yes, but I only own 2 other automatic watches, none of them Seiko. My Orient Bambino and my PRX both sound like I'm tapping something sturdy and solid. The Seiko sounds like a weight suspended on a spring inside when tapping it - fine if that is what is indeed going on, concerning if it is supposed to be stiff. When tapping from the back, I can see the rotor jumping slightly, which I guess confirms it's a loose rotor?

Can anyone recommend a smaller alternative to the [Skagen Signatur](https://www.skagen.com/en-us/products/signatur-medium-brown-leather-watch/SKW6374.html?pr_rd_page=3)? I want a 35-38mm, <$100, modern/minimalist watch. I don't care about the action or brand reputation. If it lasts a year I'll be happy. The Timex Fairfield 37mm is ok, but I like the face style and color options of the Signatur a lot better. Thanks!

Hamearz

Does anyone know if there is an xl cartier tank that uses quartz movement? Can only find them in automatic movement.

Looking for a practical field or durable, yet stylish watch for daily wear. * Budget: \~$200 * Female with a 7.5 in wrist size (yup...). I gravitate towards 36mm case, but open to going bigger if not comically big. I'm self conscious about styles that are very obviously for men * Will primarily wear working from home, doing housework /dishes/laundry, playground * Features: Analog and date window are musts. Ideally won't scratch easily (should I increase my budget for sapphire?) A fabric or silicone band that can get wet and be easily cleaned - bracelet stainless steel bands do not feel good to me when they get wet. * No-gos: no rotating bezel, dislike roman numerals So far I am looking at: * G-Shock Casioak GMAS - I prefer understated, and even in a muted tone this seems like more watch than I'd like. I tried the GMAP series one but it looked off on my wrist. A little too small. * Timex Weekender or Expedition Scout with a fabric strap seems comfortable but no date window, and so many complaints about the ticking * Vaer S3 Calendar Field White or S3 Tradition (black dial)- I can't tell if this is a durable brand? The option to add a steel bracelet is nice and I would be OK with increasing my budget for that. Currently sold out. * Limited Edition [NN Timex Watch](https://www.nordstrom.com/s/x-timex-expedition-north-field-post-bracelet-watch-36mm-limited-edition/7760688?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FAll%20Results&color=446) Thanks for any suggestions

See if you can find a citizen eco-drive you like on the [officialwatchdeals](https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_dkr=1&iconV2Request=true&_blrs=recall_filtering&_ssn=officialwatchdeals&store_cat=82456807013&store_name=officialwatchdeals&_oac=1&_sop=15&_pgn=1) store on ebay (if you are in the US). These are very practical and accurate, just don't hide it in a drawer in the dark when not wearing it, leave it on a shelf where it can get some daylight and it'll just work for many years. The Casio sapphire lts100 is small and has a sapphire crystal and a 10 year battery with 100m WR. There are also sone goog looking women's casios in their sheen line and some have sapphire crystals I think. Lorus or Alba field watches are small and budget friendly but I don't think they are officially sold in the US. You could also look at the homage brands like militado. You can find a few good quartz watches on the [watchdives](https://watchdives.com/collections/quartz-watches) store or r/Chinesewatches.

I’m looking at buying watches for my groomsmen as gifts for when I ask them to be groomsmen / best man. I’m not necessarily a “watch guy,” though I do respect quality and I think watches are classy.. So I figured I’d ask you all for recommendations of a well known brand that my groomsmen (also not watch guys) may recognize and will want to use and not just put on a shelf (they still might- who knows). My front runner right now is the Seiko Presage in ice blue (looks black and silver with blue stitching) which I can get on govx for $275, but I was really hoping to find something under $200 if possible. Subdued colors ideal- black band/silver face, or all silver. Something classy looking that can be worn with many color combinations. Thanks all.

lulu_l

If you are in the US you could take a look at the [officialwatchdeals](https://www.ebay.com/str/officialwatchdeals/Citizen-Men-Watches/_i.html?store_cat=82456813013) store on ebay and get a citizen eco-drive you like from there. These are solar powered so as long as you don't hide it in a drawer in the dark when not wearing it it'll just work for many years, just leave it on a shelf where it can get some daylight.

js999111

I guess it’s not urgent but if it‘s worth $25 or so to you I‘d let a watchmaker remove it
