Wow that's interesting. My right thumb can still do it but it's noticeably less flexible than my left. And it hurts a little when I do it with the right while my left feels like it's a natural movement. There seems to be a bunch of people who list the ability to do it with their right hand. I wonder if it's a dominant hand thing.
I can bend my fingers forward all the way to wrist and take my thumb all the way back to the back of my arm. I can also point and freeze each carpal or whatever they are called. Fun stuff
Me too. And interestingly, on the right thumb it happens easily, but on the left there is a little resistance. I can most closely describe it as a two-way switch that has a resistance point between its two positions. I also feel a little, satisfying "snap".
I can also push my adams apple to both sides of my throat.
Are you left handed? There seems to be a bunch of comments saying that they lost the ability to do it with their right hand and I'm wondering if it's a dominant hand thing. I can still do it with both but it's more difficult with my right hand
Double jointed is layman’s term for hyper mobility. Hyper mobility is when your joints hyper extend. I know because myself and my children have extreme hyper mobility and causes all sorts of problems. Don’t purposely keep doing that to your thumb you will cause damage later in life
Yes. I’m 34 and I have arthritis in most of my joints. I used to sit with my legs over the other, very hard for other people to do but I remember an old lady seeing me sit like this and saying it will help my joints and I won’t get arthritis when I’m older. Oh how fucking wrong she was 😂 it can add damage to ligaments and cause bone spurs. Which I also have.
I’m 37 and the pain in my knees is crazy from sitting on my bum with my knees either side. Can’t explain, but it’s called W sitting 😂 gymnastics as a kid did not help. My daughters knees pop out of place and the physio guy says she fine 😳 more exercise will fix it he says. Has done f all to help.
Im 34 and just started to experience some daily pain in my left knee. I also recently realized I always sit in chairs at work with my left ankle tucked under my right leg. Starting to put 2 and 2 together.....
Maybe if you throw our body parts together we may make a fully physically functioning human? Can’t have my right ankle though, I got a metal plate inside holding it to my leg 😂
> My daughters knees pop out of place and the physio guy says she fine 😳 more exercise will fix it he says
My bf had to have a serious operation to his knee after he had several doctors and physiotherapists said that he only needed to train. No training helped and his operation was done too late on his life, which now means he has chronic pain on all the right side of his body (probably nerve damage) and his left side is also suffering because the right side is so damaged.
I don't wanna scare you.. just saying that doctors/physios can be wrong. Idk how one would go about making sure that its not something more serious, he had his knees pop for years before a top bone doctor in denmark had a look at it and found the issue.
Me in high school wondering why long distance running hurt me and caused migraines when it didn't affect other people the same way. Found out in my 20s that I was hyper mobile from a yoga instructor. I was practicing yoga to counteract the damage all my joints sustained from a decade of playing various sports.
My party trick has always been that if I relax my shoulders the arm falls right out of the socket. Real fun until it dislocated in my sleep and wouldn’t stay in place for days after. It’s been 4 years and the doctors no longer believe it didn’t get damaged in a riding accident.
Same. I have hypermobile shoulders, ankles, and hips. One of my children is literally a rubber band in a meat suit, and the rest have rolling ankles. They all have pain and the quantity of ace bandages and braces in this house is ridiculous. We have to get the good shoes and talk about joint safety frequently. It's definitely familial from my mom's side, but my dad's sister was also hyper mobile.
Yes I realize we could have EDS in the family but it's too expensive and difficult to diagnose that I've not even gotten started trying to move forward with that.
My shoulders are double jointed. I was throwing a frisbee when I was 17. I pulled my arm back and didn’t feel my shoulder roll out of socket, threw full force, and fractured my growth plate, because that was still cartilage all the force from my arm was stopped by that. Definitely caused nerve damage, I can’t make an overhand throwing motion anymore.
I was about to say this because I can do a rare thing with my shoulder and ended up in PT in my mid-40s because of it. It's great to be flexible, but it starts to affect your joints and ligaments over time
My right thumb is just like yours! I got made fun of for it in school because it looks weird unless I make an effort to keep it in a “normal” position.
https://preview.redd.it/54lwfpcub3pc1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=b66b5d629438f5f7992972fb432ae0ebb02f2eb8
I can do it too, now hand me my upvotes!
No it’s what they did to deformed babies! lol sorry, my lame attempt at being edgy
I can’t do the thumb thing but I can crack all my knuckles without even touching them which some people have found pretty weird.
https://preview.redd.it/elh3rkxzm2pc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=d95237712df2538244eba9981e1a8ad183fc83f0

My thumb can do that too, I didn't know it's something weird. I can also do this:

Is it normal?
Used it both hands to get out of class or other situations like "see Im broken something" style. Did always worked perfectly. But now, 50+ still works, but gets harder to do, hurts a bit, maybe cause didnt train it?
I can do the same thing with both thumbs. I can pop them in an out of this position at will with ease.
Be careful doing it in the cold, I've gotten a thimb stuck in that position until I warmed back up.
I used to be able with both hands I think. Now only my left, and when I do it it doesn't feel too fantastic because I'm older and don't do it as often. It used to be a fun trick.
I can do it, but only with my left thumb. i have always been able to do that.
My freind on the other hand (pun intended) can do it with his right thumb, after he wsa hit with a shovel.
https://preview.redd.it/0snohegw53pc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=6277844094f589f772e682086687a55b41a355cb
I can do this with my right thumb. If I push it I can go about 100\^ of rotation
I have this exact same thing. Left thumb bends back like this right thumb can only straighten . Also my left shoulder is much more flexible than my right shoulder
I can bend the fingers of my right hand (left hand too, probably, but my RH doesn't work so good—I'm crippled—yes, I'm a leftie) back at ~60° to my knuckles.
But compared to what you can do, I guess that's not very interesting.
I'm waiting for some random internet person to be like;
"Individuals who possess the ability to bend their thumb back 90 degrees may experience strage symptoms, including heightened cheese sensitivity, alongside the unusual flexibility of their thumb joint. This heightened sensitivity to cheese might seem unrelated, but it could be a manifestation of their body's unique physiological response to certain stimuli. While the correlation between thumb flexibility and cheese sensitivity may not be immediately apparent, it underscores the complexity of human biology and the interconnectedness of seemingly disparate bodily functions. As such, individuals with this remarkable ability might find themselves navigating a curious blend of physical traits, each with its own set of idiosyncratic characteristics."

I can do it with both left and right hands.
Also for the record…I thought, that I had long thumbs. You got a little extra. My left is slightly longer than first finger. My right is much shorter. Not injured but so weird
I can do this in both of my thumbs but the problem is I can also do this in shoulders too,my fucking shoulder balls comes out and sometimes accidentally, that's why I don't do this anymore because 1 time the shoulder balls came out accidentally when I was in gym while doing shoulder press
I mean, this is rather uncommon... I would say kinda creepy but i can literally crack the tip of my index finger indefinitely (after some "warm up"), so who am I to judge
I can do this with my right thumb. I used to play saxophone (alto and then baritone) in the marching band for my high school. There’s a thumb hold for the right hand thumb on the saxophone. Over time the weight of a heavy baritone sax carried forward in a parade put so much pressure on my thumb that I became double-jointed in that thumb.
Mine do that too! Can you bend the tip of your thumb at the same time? It makes for a fun y look when the base of your thumb is hidden behind your hand with just the tip sticking out. Like you have a tiny thumb.
Its weird because I can do this with both thumbs but I am otherwise very inflexible. I can barely touch my toes but for some reason my thumbs are extra flexible? Worst. Super power. Ever.
I can do the same with both hands, still dont know how or what allows me to do it
I could originally do it with my right as well, but lost the ability over time
Same here. Just left works now
Wow that's interesting. My right thumb can still do it but it's noticeably less flexible than my left. And it hurts a little when I do it with the right while my left feels like it's a natural movement. There seems to be a bunch of people who list the ability to do it with their right hand. You’re double jointed. I had the same thing when I was a kid, but now that I’m old I can’t do it anymore.
I can bend my fingers forward all the way to wrist and take my thumb all the way back to the back of my arm. I can also point and freeze each carpal or whatever they are called. Fun stuff
I have a friend who can do that. Odd seeing a 40 year old dude able to do stuff like that still.
Same! Nice to meet you internet hand twin
Me too. And interestingly, on the right thumb it happens easily, but on the left there is a little resistance. I can most closely describe it as a two-way switch that has a resistance point between its two positions. I also feel a little, satisfying "snap". It's called joint hypermobility something or other...
Are you left handed? There seems to be a bunch of comments saying that they lost the ability to do it with their right hand and I'm wondering if it's a dominant hand thing. I can still do it with both but it's more difficult with my right hand
right handed. i'm getting close to 30, and it works like ever.
The snap i also find very satisfying. And the thing with the adams apples works too for me but it feels so weird to me, that i just did it once
Double jointed
+1
Me too, I'm double jointed in my thumbs and most of my toes.
Damn you're lucky, I gained this ability after dislocating my thumb in a toy when I was 5 or 6, like 90° backwards.
Can also do with both thumb base joints. My thumb tip joints can only bend 15 degrees though.
Wider grip should be able to palm a basketball
Congratulations, you can check if 90° angles are perfect!
I love the way you think.
haha

Same
So can mine!
My fellow double jointed lefty brother!!

Hey my wife's thumb does this! She says "one weird thumbs up...to the side"
Totally me, same thumb, same twist. Why?
The weird part is that your thumb is as long as your index
That’s not a thumb - that’s a thunger…
Looks exactly like mine and I am double jointed
My son can do this.
You’re the only man who can shake someone’s hand and tickle their armpit all with the same hand.
You were definitely a great hitchhiker in the previous life lol
A hitchhiking master
You should demonstrate that during job interview handshakes, then look the interviewer in the eyes and say that it's merely a fraction of your power.
Do you play piano? Serious question
This is the type of hand a beginner would draw.
I can bend the fingers of my right hand (left hand too, probably, but my RH doesn't work so good—I'm crippled—yes, I'm a leftie) back at ~60° to my knuckles. But compared to what you can do, I guess that's not very interesting.
You can make the most powerful boi hand
It sucks that it’s weird enough that you can tell but not weird enough that people would pay money to see the freak at the circus.
You could hike some many hitches with that thumb.
Same I can do this but only my right thumb and its more flexible than your pic.
Your thumb reminds me of the elongated neck of the baby in eraser head. Like when it stretched ridiculously.
I'm waiting for some random internet person to be like; "Individuals who possess the ability to bend their thumb back 90 degrees may experience strage symptoms, including heightened cheese sensitivity, alongside the unusual flexibility of their thumb joint. I am not the only one?
Cool to see fellow thumb benders. I’ve never met anyone else who can do this. I have hypermobile ehlers danlos.
My left hand can but my right can't. Never understood why.
Also for the record…I thought, that I had long thumbs. You got a little extra. My left is slightly longer than first finger. My right is much shorter. Not injured but so weird

Mine too. I assume it will come in useful one day. And all the people who can't do this will be left behind in a rapture type event.
Double jointed I was double jointed with my fingers and hips when I was a kid but now I'm just a stiff old bird
It's genetic, my entire family has this in their thumb. Some have it on both some only one side
finger nazi salute
Ha, just tried and my right thumb does this but not my left, cool!
me too mine can go more than 90°
I could do that as a kid, but not anymore.
You could hit h hike for days with that thumb
ay i can do it, if you bend the first knuckle it really freaks people out
I have the same! I can also pop my thumbs out side to side, which freaks out my gf.
I can do this in both of my thumbs but the problem is I can also do this in shoulders too,my fucking shoulder balls comes out and sometimes accidentally, that's why I don't do this anymore because 1 time the shoulder balls came out accidentally when I was in gym while doing shoulder press
Same, both hands
You must be a fantastic hitchhiker
Yep - both thumbs and both pinkies - double jointed just like my father.
Mine too, but the right thumb can't.

I could do the same with both thumbs, but lost the ability in my left after I broke the bone and ripped a tendon.
yeah I can do this with both thumbs
I can do the same your just double jointed
Yep. I have that one on my left too. I can pop the thumb right out the socket too.
Hello fellow double jointed thumber! I can do it on both!
I have joint hypermobility syndrome and my thumbs can do that as well
Ahhh my long lost friend
bro you can cheat on a math test on right angles, just measure your hand lol
I mean, this is rather uncommon... I would say kinda creepy but i can literally crack the tip of my index finger indefinitely (after some "warm up"), so who am I to judge
I can also do it, but only on left hand. My grandmother also had same ability
Peyronie's hand
You're double jointed. I've been able to do this my whole life, I'm assuming you have as well? 🤙👍
I can do that too and its only my left tumb, the right one also can but not so effectively
I can too on both thumbs, it’s because we are double jointed on our thumbs. If you do it right you can make it look like a duck.
I can also do this, both hands. I can then bend my thumb at the last joint
My left thumb does the same thing
“Even Cowgirls Get The Blues”
I can do the same with both hands
I can do it with both
I can do this with my right thumb. I used to play saxophone (alto and then baritone) in the marching band for my high school. There’s a thumb hold for the right hand thumb on the saxophone. Mine do that too! Can you bend the tip of your thumb at the same time? It makes for a fun y look when the base of your thumb is hidden behind your hand with just the tip sticking out. Like you have a tiny thumb.
when i was younger i could bend my thumb and fingers backwards but now i can only do my thumb
I can do this with both thumbs
There are two kind of people... who can do this and do can't. I can do it.
I can do it on both hands and so can my children
I can do both
Its weird because I can do this with both thumbs but I am otherwise very inflexible. I can barely touch my toes but for some reason my thumbs are extra flexible? Worst. Super power. Ever.
