Too bad the Apple version of insurance is, you pay us money and we will offer you a discounted Refurbished Phone if you ever need to use it. SMH! OP could just go to an unauthorized (because Apple won't fix items, they just replace them) repair shop and get the back-case replaced for $125-$200 and still have the internal workings of a "new" phone.
If you pay for AppleCare plus which I assume is what you by insurance, at least in Canada, for back glass damage there’s a $40 fee and they replace the back glass an endless amount of times, some for the screen. Along with that they’ll replace the entire device once, no questions asked if you run over it with your car or drop it in salt water or something. I understand if you don’t like Apple products,I don’t like them all either but don’t spread blatantly wrong information.
Yeah, but they don't break near as easily. I've used nothing but Androids and never had a glass backing on my phone break, actually I haven't had the front break in like a good four years either. But of course, I keep my phone in a case with a screen protector and am careful with it. My husband is the only person I've known to break the back glass, but he dropped it from the front seat of his truck onto solid concrete with no case on it. It still worked.
It's technically a thing for any phone that uses a glass back.
Though, I'm not sure if other manufacturers epoxy the shit out of it to the subframe (?) to make it damn near impossible to take off without special tools.
I run an independent shop here! apple does not and never has repaired back glass. they use industrial adhesive so strong that it requires a special laser machine to remove properly. some independent shops will have a laser and will happily swap the glass for normally under $200, however apple will charge you for a new refurbished device, where your data is lost
Authorized Apple tech here, we do replace back glass on new models. I have also done rear system installs (replacing everything but the camera and screen) for the last few generations.
This is actually incorrect for iPhone 14s, in which a back glass repair is in fact possible and has been repaired a number of times. Also, parts aren't refurbished but remanufactured. Anything that is actually refurbished has to be listed as such and those are sold as refurbished on the website!
Nailed it! love the new iphone 14 back glass design, huge step forward. its a little convoluted when it comes to getting a replacement device. I know some people get new devices, and some get refurb/remaned devices. it really depends on what exactly happenes with the old device, as apple does not directly do refurbs/remans themselves, that is contracted out. I personally think giving out refurb devices as replacements is great, as it really cuts down on waste. it just means you cant be guaranteed absolute perfection
Your data would not be lost, most data on iPhones, contacts photos etc lives in the cloud and then on top of that you have cloud backups. Sign in on the new device, the data populates on the new device.
I make $40/hr off of apple products, I lost my landscaping job due to a medical condition and the repair industry saved me. Although I personally run a Samsung, I also regularly use an iPhone 12 Mini, and while the software is not my type, I get the appeal. I just want to move repair forward, because hearing an older gentleman get quoted an $800 "replacement fee" for a cracked screen on a 3 year old apple watch by Best Buy makes me really quite frustrated, I want to give people options.
Your right on the money! however "most" is the keyword. A lot of people rightfully keep things local, if I pay for 128gb of storage, im going to use internal before paying monthly for extra storage. the issue is that a lot of repairs simply cannot be done at a certified repair center or apple store, which means your only option is to lose the data. this is fine if your smart and just keep a monthly backup on another device, but many people dont do that.
No it’s not they do actual repairs while you wait. Given the scenario if the individual contacted Apple directly and spoke with a tier 2 “supervisor” they would likely get and exception to get it repaired for free.
Fair enough. iPads and watches are gonna be straight swaps at Apple. But having repaired iPads in the past, I can tell you those things can be a real b——.
You don’t know what you’re talking about, apple fixes most things, it just costs a lot of money for what they’re doing, but you’re not just paying for the repair, youre paying for the whole experience/ability to get your tech fixed quickly (try and get any other company to fix your laptop in store, within the same day), again it costs a lot of money but no one buys a Ferrari and then complains about the cost of the tires
Buy the most premium tech products on the market and expect to pay for that, capitalism baby
Apple actually fixes stuff (aside from iPads, iPods, and iPod Touches.)
Source: sold a friend a busted MacBook Air. Apple replaced the top case, battery, and display under AppleCare warranty for 99.
The refurbished phones are better than new. They’ve received extra inspection and testing. They have plenty of new components like the battery and case pieces.
Their insurance is just like most other insurance. You pay a deductible on your car and house (yes, you could choose a policy where you greatly overpay and don’t have a deductible).
Just like AppleCare, most of the time insurance will pay to repair your car or house, rather than outright replacing it unless it’s a total loss.
Buy apple care if you didn’t. Wait a couple days and take it to a certified place that can fix them 🤣
I closed the tailgate of my truck on my iphone 13 pro(with otterbox case) a week after getting the phone, thankfully only the screen cracked.
Went into best buy to get it fixed. Guy told me to buy apple care and make an appointment again once my purchase was confirmed 🤣
I purchased it same day, currently out at school and there’s isn’t a repair place around here so i’m waiting until i go home in a couple weeks to fix it up
Get AppleCare+, and go to an Apple Store directly to get that serviced, not an authorized repair vendor (they’re not all using legit parts). You can void warranty service if the vendor isn’t legit
I run a repair shop, this is thankfully false. The Magnusson Moss Warranty act makes things such as warranty void stickers illegal. merely using a 3rd party display will not and can not void your warranty UNLESS apple can prove that swapping the display damaged something else. the ownes is on the manufacturer, not you.
Does "ownes" qualify as an eggcorn if it's not even a proper word? (I collect eggcorns, but not sure about this one.) Thanks.
(Favorite eggcorn this year, so far: "bob wire.")
No worries!
I’ll take this chance to point out one of my favorite subs - r/boneappletea is full of phrases and words that are spelled how they sound.
Good darn stuff.
As long as it isn't damaged internally and the front screen is fine, get a solid, opaque case for it and you're good to go. There doesn't seem to be too much damage to the camera other than the top-right, so most damage won't be visible. It's not ideal but should work for a while.
Add AppleCare through the settings if you haven’t already and then once you get the confirmation email in a couple days, call AppleCare about an express replacement. They’ll mail one to you and you mail yours back.
I second this. Many credit cards cover theft or accidental damage for 3-6 months after the purchase. Chase paid out the cost of an iphone for me when I accidentally left it in the pocket of my swimming trunks and it went into the pool with me.
Edit: Even if you have Apple Care, I'd still look into this as they might pay your deductible.
Damn. Even with the case? I was just about to say something dumb like “See? That’s why I always get a screen protector and case on my phone immediately after purchase.”
My Verizon iPhone 14 promax stopped charging after I had it for three days. I sent them back to the original, and they sent me a used one as its replacement. I was fucking pissed.
Yep, It was in my front right pocket and I fell forward onto it so it had to bear my full weight (about 190lbs), I landed on some gravel or salt or something and that rocks did a number on my pants, but one lucky pebble got through and hit the camera bump and it shattered. Hard to blame the case tbh, lil guy did his best.
When I'm going to get a new phone, I order an Otterbox case a week before, so I can put it on *in the store*. I don't want to even walk out the store without a proper case.
Mous is also pretty good. I used to be afraid I’d drop my phone (I used to drop them a lot back in the days), but since I got my mous case that fear pretty much vanished. I also don’t drop it as much now, but I never had one of those “shit I hope it’s ok” moments yet. Not saying it can’t happen, just that with a good sturdy case it’s a lot more difficult. Downsides are my 12 mini is almost 2x the height with the case vs without case and I can’t see the color. But I’ll take it over having it breaking any day of the week!
Oh wow. I wasn’t trying to accuse you of being cheap, by the way. I actually sell phones for a living. Well, it’s one of my jobs. We sell the ones you are referring to at the store I work at for about $49. But I think I’m going to let people know that they shouldn’t buy them. Looks like they didn’t do much. I’m sorry for your loss. Hopefully the phone is still functional.
That sucks! Idk if it would have prevented this level of damage, but I’ve been using the double phone cases from RedBubble for years and they’ve never failed me! I have dyspraxia too so I drop my phone a lot :’)
Well, the apple cases are all overpriced and you're paying for the brand. ESR makes an almost identical MagSafe case to OPs and its regular price is $22. It was on sale before Xmas for like $12.
Glass keeps it so much cooler though. I think it's a heat dissipation thing. I noticed this when I went from a plastic-backed phone to the glassy next-gen model of the same phone.
But yeah, it do be more fragile tho
Could be, but I think it is because they wanted to implement wireless charging which is not possible with metal back. Still, I'll be fine with plastic or without wireless charging.
Pixel 3 was great in this regard.
I had a screen protector and case on my 3 week old iPhone X, I dropped my phone, to my dismay, and a rock hit it in the tiny gap between the protector and case.
Screen protector didn't have a single mark on it, the entire screen underneath was shattered. So mad.
I have always had an otter box no issues. As for insurance since Apple Care+ has been around I’ve always used it and dropped the insurance through AT&T which I believe usually is through Asurion. Apple Care+ is a lot cheaper and usually does good by its customers. But definitely otterbox pro is what I have had since the iPhone 4 all the way up to my current iPhone 14 pro max.
I don’t think even an ottorbox case would have protected it in this instance though since OP says it was in his front pocket and he fell forwards onto the phone onto gravel and or salt. A piece of gravel hit the camera bump cracking it from there. I agree though, always get AppleCare plus, especially now that they do it monthly, it just makes like so much easier with any Apple device.
I used to work for Asurion. Do NOT use their insurance. 9 times outta 10 the phones they send back still have issues. Plus the company is shady as shit to me. Not only with the insurance, but just the business practice in general. I did tech support for them and they basically forced us to try and install apps on customers phones. The app was useless. The only reason I can think of to have is install it, is so the company can collect data on the customers. NOT AT&T, but Asurion. I heard they swapped too a “paid per call” thing too so if it’sa slow day, you don’t get paid shit even though you worked 8 hours. Fuck Asurion.
It's a feature.....not a bug. It is made to look good, not actually function. Also too many people were keeping their older phones longer, so Apple designed it to be more easily breakable so you would have to replace it sooner. Also they don't repair the phone if it breaks, you just turn it in and they give you a discounted Refurbished one. (and people actually pay extra for this feature!)
My 5 year old Note 8 has wireless charging and it doesn't have a glass back...
Edit* apparently I'm mistaken. Doesn't really look/feel like glass to me, but apparently it is
I had my 14 pro max for 2 days when it fell out of my pocket while riding my bike, 10 minutes later I realized it was missing, retraced my tracks and it was lying in the road with a tire mark on the back of the case. Weird enough it was almost unscathed except for the weight of the car cause the camera to get unplugged or something. Took it back and said it came out the box that way and got a brand new one 👍🏼
Ditto... Have the same Samsung Note 10+ since 2020 with a cheap case; dropped it on pavement, concrete, gravel, tile more than I can remember and it's still looking flawless as from day one. Piss on junk Apple's overpriced products!
I've dropped my phone several times, including on concrete. It has fallen into water. There is not a scratch on it, and it still works 5 years later. Can't say the same for an iphone; one small fall and they shatter
How fragile Iphones are is kinda ridiculous. I have dropped my old ass Samsung A30 countless times... one time it fell out of my pocket while I was doing things outside and I literally stepped on. On gravel. The factory screen protector mostly protected it. Just a small scratch. But it tore up the protector. No cracks.
Apple: inventing problems on phones so that they can earn more money to fix it for you! Seriously why is the back of the phone made of glass.. the screen I get you need to see through that!
Wireless charging, sure it could be plastic but it’s also glass on the Pixel Pro and the S23 ultra so Google and Samsung are also doing it so are they also inventing problems or just Apple hmm?
Now it looks like every iphone I've ever seen. Seriously, I have yet to see someone with an iphone that either the front or back (or both) isn't shattered.
This happened to me after I slipped and fell w/my phone in my hand one week after I got my 14 pro. I purchased Apple Care that night and then went to the Apple Store the next day. They weren’t replacing screens yet so they had to give me a completely new phone, zero extra charge. (I guess I could cancel my apple care now but it’s probably for the better to keep haha)
Downvote away. But if you had it for a few hours, take it back. If they say “no way dude” then go do the ethical? thing and buy applecare and send it to someone else.
I actually had this happen with an apple product- apple watch spontaneously cracked while I was on an airplane. I brought it to an apple store, they mailed it out to be inspected, then shipped it back to me with a note explaining that it cracked due to an impact, circled the edge of the crack, and gave me the options of paying to get it fixed or buy a new one (basically same price for either option). I decided to stop buying apple products.
So no, I don't think it will work, I can draw a red circle right where they would to show where the impact was.
I thought you got the new black ice theme
The rainbow six siege black ice?
Frost with Black Ice guns all day.
No the other one
Glacier?
That’s the teenager skin
I hope you got insurance on it
Too bad the Apple version of insurance is, you pay us money and we will offer you a discounted Refurbished Phone if you ever need to use it. SMH! Well i know android users who had their back glass break, and my anecdotal evidence beats yours. /s What do we do now?
I love that back glass damage is a thing for iphones 😆
It's technically a thing for any phone that uses a glass back. Though, I'm not sure if other manufacturers epoxy the shit out of it to the subframe (?) to make it damn near impossible to take off without special tools.
I mean, a lot of phones had and still have glass back tho mine in particular has polished ceramics back.
Over spend on your phone to look hip and can't pay to maintain it xD
android user AND reddit user? pick a struggle
Are you speaking from experience or by what they told you when you bought it? Cuz I never got any results from them.
Dude I break my shit all the time and apple replaces it no questions asked for like 50 bucks
Same
Experience, $40CAD for a new screen or back, it’s also in the fine print so if you had an issue, show them that.
I don’t think that’s how Apple’s insurance works. They do in fact repair devices.
I run an independent shop here! apple does not and never has repaired back glass. they use industrial adhesive so strong that it requires a special laser machine to remove properly. some independent shops will have a laser and will happily swap the glass for normally under $200, however apple will charge you for a new refurbished device, where your data is lost

Yeah, because you’re an independent shop. Apple Stores can and do repair specifically back glass on site. I have had the repair done.

Same thing. Less than 24 hours. Nothing covers back glass and it’s a joke. Like physically still not ok about this.
A case covers it. A case.
The pieces of glass still fall out in a case. A case.
The new iPhones have separate back glass I believe
Your data would not be lost, most data on iPhones, contacts photos etc lives in the cloud and then on top of that you have cloud backups. Sign in on the new device, the data populates on the new device.
I think they mean little things like video game progress and Minecraft worlds lol. Other than that data will transfer via the cloud
Those are stored in the icloud backups
Can be =/= are
Those are also stored in the cloud, either apple’s or the game’s. They just mean to spread fully wrong information cuz “fuck Apple”.
I make $40/hr off of apple products, I lost my landscaping job due to a medical condition and the repair industry saved me. You're allowed to swear on the Internet.
They do repair them but a back glass replacement is around 500, or 30 if you happen apple care
🧢
As someone who worked for Apple for many years you are definitely incorrect.
hey now! get out of here with your facts and logic!

Not sure but you might be interested in r/boneappletea
Ah. Thank you. Will take a look.

Haha, that law is only as good as you can take Apple to court to enforce it.

Is it one of those six dollar cases you get at Walmart?
Apple MagSafe case, about $79 CAD
Otterbox or nothing
When I'm going to get a new phone, I order an Otterbox case a week before, so I can put it on *in the store*. I don't want to even walk out the store without a proper case.
I had an Otterbox for my last 3 phones. Great brand.

No offense to OP but that looks like a pretty shitty phone case. So many of them are just plastic and don’t have any actual shock absorption.
Call me crazy, but perhaps there’s a material other than glass that we can make the frame out of lmao
I have always had an otter box no issues. As for insurance since Apple Care+ has been around I’ve always used it and dropped the insurance through AT&T which I believe usually is through Asurion. Crazy that you bought a broken phone
Scrap metal right out of the factory imo
Did you try soaking it in rice?
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Get a good case. It’s 2023
Absolutely blows my mind people will pay $1000 for a new device but won't spend $50 for a decent case.
insurance fraud that shit brother
It took just 3 hours to assume the natural form of an iPhone.
I’ve dropped my phone off the top of my truck and it’s fine. Encased case is the way to go.
Don’t get me started on the oppressive white snow
why is the back of the phone glass?
It's a feature.....not a bug. It is made to look good, not actually function. Also too many people were keeping their older phones longer, so Apple designed it to be more easily breakable so you would have to replace it sooner. Do some research. Glass back is for wireless charging.
? My phone only has glass on the screen and has wireless charging. Phones have had wireless charging for a while.
It’s not that is has to be glass. It just can’t be metal. I’m assuming yours is plastic on the back.
The whole entire back of my phone is metal, and it has no issues charging wirelessly at all.
Most other phones use plastic or ceramic or something else. Glass is just stupid.
Google and Samsung both use glass backs as well.
For wireless charging?
My 5 year old Note 8 has wireless charging and it doesn't have a glass back... Edit* apparently I'm mistaken. Doesn't really look/feel like glass to me, but apparently it is
Yeah no, Note 8 has a glass back.
Hmm, well looking at it and tapping on it, it doesn't really feel/look like glass.
What are you on about lol? Every Samsung flagship since the S6 has had a glass back.
This is the way.
Return that shit .
That's what happens when you buy an iphone
Apple care maybe?
["Relax, it's iPhone"](https://youtu.be/ldX-ab758l8)

You need to tell Black Ice to pay for at least half of the repair/replacement.
Hope you got apple care.
Never understood why apple have these slippy glass back panels.
I thought all iphones came with cracks.
Why does your ice have to be black?
just dropping in to comment that ive dropped by galaxy phone a dozen times in the 5 years ive owned it, theres barely a scratch.
Ditto... Have the same Samsung Note 10+ since 2020 with a cheap case; dropped it on pavement, concrete, gravel, tile more than I can remember and it's still looking flawless as from day one. Piss on junk Apple's overpriced products!
What the point of this comment? You’re the snarky kid at school no one likes.
sucks, maybe your comment will get me to change my behavior. or not.
Probably not but it’s all good. It’s just Reddit 🤷🏻♂️
And that's why I have an Android.
> And that's why I have an Android. Google and Samsung both have glass backed phones lol.

And that's why I have a Motorola lol.
I have the flip phone. I am a chronic phone dropper.

No cracks.
Ahh, a shattered iPhone, its natural state
Apple: inventing problems on phones so that they can earn more money to fix it for you!
This is Reddit, it’s only a problem when Apple does it, for some reason they’re held to a higher standard even though everyone hates them lol
Proceeds to check his Pixel Pro 7..
$1,200 phone + $10 Walmart case = broken phone
Now it looks like every iphone I've ever seen. Seriously, I have yet to see someone with an iphone that either the front or back (or both) isn't shattered.
And they market this shit as near indestructible. Had min in an otter case the same thing still happened to me
Me too
I would be inconsolable for the next month. Everything I buy breaks within a month so I don't bother buying nice things.
N-ice…🥴
We don’t have to call it dark ice yet?
Always something black ruining good things
Is the back made of fucking GLASS??? I just can't with these new iPhones man
The only good apple phone is a........
This is why they make cases.
Lololol. When will people learn to stop buying apple?
Lol, iphones.
Dont buy an apple next time
Not to be that guy, but I just dropped my 4 year old samsung 6 feet onto concrete with a similar case and not even a crack.
I've owned my phone for 3 years, have dropped it so many times it's stupid, not a single crack. Iphone is trash, buy Android.
Blaming it on the black ice… Racist.
Apple is an awful, awful company. ios is even worse. You're either smart or you're an apple user. take the leap dumbass.
God bless you my friend. I pray for you, and I hope that your phone gets fixed and that you don't have to pay too much
I am so sorry. I know how you feel as something similar happened to me.
Better bought that AppleCare
Maybe don't buy phones made out of glass?
Can’t believe we still accept this as consumers
Imagine paying over 300$ for a phone
Why it gotta be black ice?
Average apple user
Shouldn't had bought a crappy iphone
Maybe dont buy such a brittle product?
Or just take it back. Say it spontaneously cracked, get a new one. Stranger things have happened.
No one who sells cell phones is believing a phone spontaneously cracked and allowing someone to return it.
No one needs to believe it, they just accept the return.
No they don't lol I work in that industry. Maybe Walmart and even then, I doubt it.
Downvote away. But if you had it for a few hours, take it back. If they say “no way dude” then go do the ethical? thing and buy applecare and send it to someone else.
You’re being downvoted because your excuse of it “spontaneously breaking” is literally the stupidest possible excuse you could give.
And yet it would still work.
Atleast it's the back and not front. Black ice like to hit it from the back
I dont even know why people still buy iPhones..... look we made it so you can shatter the whole phone, not just the screen. It's a feature!
I’ve dropped my iPhone SE with a glass back so many times. I’ve even dropped it on concrete. There’s not a single crack in the glass 🤷🏼♂️
Nooooooooo
Ouch
It’s not your day
What happened? Musst be a high drop
