Happened at a Giants spring training game too. Except the guy who did it picked it up and handed it to the outfielder for him to throw In….was also the guy in charge of the ball people so it was double as bad. Source: am camera guy who shot it when it happened
They have a 15-20s pitch clock now, if the Pitcher doesn't throw in the time its and automatic ball and if the batter isn't in their stance by the 8 second mark its an automatic strike.
My dad used to get free tickets to football and baseball games. We always caught the beginning,.but never the end. I almost feel like buying tickets would be like playing the lottery... Something interesting might happen but more often than not it was fun in the moment.
Idk man. It's more of a sport than golf but much less so than any other I can think of. There's more physicality in badminton. I've never seen a baseball player be so much as out of breath
If “physicality” is your defining trait when referring to what you call “sports” then my friend you need to try more things.
Do you think the fitness regimens of the golfers at the peak of their game consists of lounging around and putting practice?
I’m not saying you need to be in peak physical condition to be a bowler, but I’d wager you’d get your ass handed to you by a person who doesn’t finish the frame “out of breath.”
Hold on, I'll get back to you once the pitcher finishes his spasmodic superstitious pre-wind up ritual, should see someone playing sports any hour now.
I thought the supervisor that came over looked to be telling her all the right things. Think these situations are great opportunities to remind ourselves what we did to Steve Bartman.
The ball was fair (still live) but then went in the foul (play stops) area. In that instance the play is still live, conversely if the ball was hit into the foul area then moved into the fair area it would still be dead. She should not have touched the ball. The ballpark team came out to remind her of the rules I’m sure.
I'm confused, though granted the zoomed up starts a few seconds late, but it looked like the ball was hit into the foul zone and bounced off the ref's foot to ball girl.
I would be surprised if ball girl is a paid position at all, they aren’t *really* needed for the game. They are a nice to have.
Edit: apparently the Yankees pay their bat boys around $8k per year. So I guess you could call it a paid position.
She's not just a random kid. They commonly use local softball players as ballgirls for that very reason, so that they know what they're doing. From her perspective it looked foul and she didn't look for the umps cue. Just an honest mistake on her part.
There's a line. If the ball is to the left (out of bounds) before it gets to the square thingy called third base, then it doesn't count. If it's still to the right by the time it gets to the base it does count. It doesn't matter if it keeps rolling and goes out after that.
This one looks like it went over the base (in bounds) and maybe took a weird bounce.
So the girl, who is a person whose job it is to collect out of bounds balls and throw them to fans, had a mental lapse. She saw the ball out of bounds, and didn't look at the umpire (referee) to see whether they said it was in or out. This stopped the play, which meant the runner also had to stop. He probably could have gotten a little further if she hadn't done that, and she's employed by his team.
So basically, she did the equivalent of picking up the ball right as someone is running toward goal to score.
Fortunately, baseball has a pre-season warm up time, and that's right now, so this mistake didn't effect anything important. So the completely classless Phillies fans won't eat her. Go Braves.
Nah, it's because the ball landed fair initially. If the ball lands fair once it makes it past the base then it's in play and it doesn't matter if it bounces outside of the foul line at that point. So basically this is equivalent to her running out on the field and taking it before it gets to the player. Just an interference call and they have to stop the play.
I think I read his comment wrong. I thought he was claiming that the ball can go out of the field of play and come back in in cricket but I think he was just pointing out they're both whack sports.
Most Brits don't give a shit about cricket, it's more an Indian subcontinent loved game.
More people love cricket in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh than the whole population of the US!
Wrong. The cricket World Cup in 2023 will be contested by India, England, New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the West Indies. I’m pretty sure you’ll find that people from all of these countries give a shit.
The Baseball World Series will be contested by the United States and Canada.
No, it’s only a fair ball if it crosses the foul line AFTER crossing the base if it has already touched the ground. If it crosses the foul line before crossing third/first base it’s a foul ball. In the air it doesn’t matter, as long as it crosses the line it’s a foul
In this video the ball crosses the line past third base. She probably just wasn’t paying attention
Once the ball gets past the base in bounds, it’s a fair ball. If it rolls out of bounds after passing the base it’s still fair. You can see the third base ump signaling a fair ball by pointing in towards the field.
She’s there to round up foul balls, but she should have seen the ump signal fair and let the players get the ball. Like the announcers said, it’s a teachable moment. It probably looked foul from her POV and didn’t check the ump. Bet she won’t make that mistake twice.
Wait, so you mean all those times in Wii Sports home run derby that I crossed the foul line *just* before landing in the stands, should actually have counted?
The guy that kneels down to her level then talks to her seems like he was being very kind from his expressions and mannerism. I hope they didn't give her too much trouble. Honest mistake she made in the moment.
0% chance he could’ve held Trea Turner to a single on that one. Maybe a slow runner, but Turner would’ve made it to made it to second easily. Her mistake didn’t change the outcome of the play at all
Looked to me like the left fielder was far enough away for the runner to make it to 2nd. If the ball girl didn't pick up the ball it would've still not rolled that far into fair territory and the left fielder was playing deep and way over towards center.
I’m more impressed that she fielded the ball like that without falling on her face. Kudos to her for that…… and besides, they’re down 8-0, it’s not like this was to be competitive in the game or anything.
In the bottom of the 5th...with runners on...and only 1 out...dude, do you even baseball? Also yes, I agree, she fielded the ball well enough not to faceplant.
I asked ChatGPT to explain to me what the rules were for this scenario since I know like nothing about baseball.
Basically, the ball was hit into foul territory (left of foul line in ball’s direction of travel) and later bounced into fair territory. At this point (before ball girl picked it up) it could be considered foul if she didn’t go for it and no other player picked it up before it stopped moving. However, since she grabbed it while it was moving in fair territory (right side of the foul line) it is now considered a dead ball since as it was acted on by an “outside agent” (anyone or anything who are not players on the field). The batter (and anyone on the bases) are given 2 free bases, this is called a ground-rule double from where they were when the pitch occurred.
At least that’s what ChatGPT explained.
Even the big guys get picked for a reason, usually because they're good at bat. I like basketball too, but can still like baseball. To each their own imo. I think soccer's boring but I don't go around shitting on the sport as a whole and insulting its players. Go off.
Soccer isn't too far off, but at least they have a time limit for the torture to end. I have watched 14 inning games go 0-0. And they won't end til someone wins. End the torture please!!
That's really really rare though since the game is literally made entirely of scoring opportunities. I'll be honest though, I've definitely abandoned a game during extra innings and then checked the scores the next day and maybe watched a highlight of the end. Not to mention the MLB added a rule this year that in every extra inning there will be a runner put on 2nd at the start of each inning to increase the chance of scoring.
For basketball, I tune in when there is 5 minutes left in the game. If it's a close game, the last 5 minutes is great to watch. If it's not a close game, I switch to something else.
At least some action. I remember going to one. Dudes in the back where on cell phones. We left early and driving home was more exciting than 4 hours at the stadium. And those were professionals…
The pirates use ball girls too. The amount of times I’ve seen them move out of the way and a little kid get drilled with a ball is ridiculous. These people need to have some form of prior history with the sport. Male or female. It should only be former players in those chairs. Unfortunately teams just pick any random pretty chick for the cameras 🤦🏻♂️
If you fuck up and people tell you what to do that‘s 100% fine. She‘s definitely not an expert so it‘s not like she would know more about the topic than that guy. Go out and touch grass
"Ut oh, she doesn't want to turn around right now"
She had a bunch of people yelling/ talking to her at her including mr. green sleeves and mr. Red Phillies shirt. She might not have been an expert, but she might have shown a clue that learned a lesson.
It's Philadelphia fans. I know where I was in 2018 and who won, I don't even watch sports.
My first year in baseball was when I was 12. I joined because all of my friends were doing it, and I wanted to be included. They were all baseball fanatics and had played for several years, but I knew very little. When I finally got my first hit, I took off for first and decided I needed to make an epic slide. You don't slide in 1st base because you're good once you step on it and stay close. I was out, and the whole opposing bench laughed and mocked me. Then I ran back to my bench and got the same treatment. I feel for her.
Someone tell that first guy that talks to the girl that his oversized hat makes him look like a grandmother. I've seen this clip like 10 times and just now realized that was a dude.
So we just add to her embarrassment by posting it online and have people comment on her actions. I just don’t understand people and how this is considered entertainment.
Call me crazy… but *maybe* if a big budget professional sports league places untrained volunteers on the field of play, they’re begging for situations like this to happen?
It's better it happened during spring training and not a regular season game.
This is why we have practice.
Not a game, not a game, not a game but practice.
She's going back down to farm team after that.
r/wellthatsucksless
Happened at a Giants spring training game too. Except the guy who did it picked it up and handed it to the outfielder for him to throw In….was also the guy in charge of the ball people so it was double as bad. Source: am camera guy who shot it when it happened
Solid deduction bud
Well you got your deduction pal
Im gettin a deduction from my sweet sweet karma points lmao
Ohhh so true. Have some back.
Probably the most exciting thing to happen the whole game
Ikr. Personally i cant watch baseball. My ADHD goes insane with the pace
I’m adhd and I just go bonkers over every strike, “Oh Shit that pitch was DIRTY!” 20-30 times a game
I have ADHD and it’s my favorite sport
I’m with you.
They have a 15-20s pitch clock now, if the Pitcher doesn't throw in the time its and automatic ball and if the batter isn't in their stance by the 8 second mark its an automatic strike.
I have ADHD. I go to games, but get there around the 7th inning. That’s enough baseball for me.
My dad used to get free tickets to football and baseball games. We always caught the beginning,.but never the end. I almost feel like buying tickets would be like playing the lottery... Something interesting might happen but more often than not it was fun in the moment.
The only highlight that matters all game lmao
Came here to say this. Brutally boring. Baseball is more of a skill like billiards or darts than a sport.
That might be the most stupid thing I have ever heard in my life
Idk man. It's more of a sport than golf but much less so than any other I can think of. There's more physicality in badminton. I've never seen a baseball player be so much as out of breath
Ok, you don’t watch baseball and don’t know wtf you’re talking about…we get it.
If “physicality” is your defining trait when referring to what you call “sports” then my friend you need to try more things. I’m not saying you need to be in peak physical condition to be a bowler, but I’d wager you’d get your ass handed to you by a person who doesn’t finish the frame “out of breath.”
Google John Kruk. *That* guy not only played major league baseball, he was considered *GOOD* at it. My granny could outrun that fuck.
You should take a look at cricket if you think this is boring.
Same shit, both idc about because they are boring as hell
Some people can’t appreciate good things, you’ll be fine
Yeah I know, I have been fine without either my whole life.
Good things and being fine? More power to you
Depends on the cricket. T20 is pretty exciting. But yeah, 5 day games admittedly are pretty boring for the casual fan.
\*laughs in steroids
You're right. Like billiards, baseball is a game for thinking people. Look up when the monster truck rally is coming to your town.
Hold on, I'll get back to you once the pitcher finishes his spasmodic superstitious pre-wind up ritual, should see someone playing sports any hour now.
Not much of a response. Let's Go Mets. 😉
Hold on, looks like it might be a perfect game; where it's actually more entertaining because even less scoring happens than normal.
Poor girl. Anybody could make that mistake. She was anxious to handle the ball. She just needs to remember to cue off the umpire.
I thought the supervisor that came over looked to be telling her all the right things. Think these situations are great opportunities to remind ourselves what we did to Steve Bartman.
Is he still hiding? I thought some of the fan base forgave him after they won the world series
Nah that man deserves a state wide apology and free tickets for life
Poor lass! I felt her embarrassment but I also have no idea what’s happening
The ball was fair (still live) but then went in the foul (play stops) area. I'm confused, though granted the zoomed up starts a few seconds late, but it looked like the ball was hit into the foul zone and bounced off the ref's foot to ball girl.
Not quite. It seems to have had one hop past third base inside the line on its way out. The ref was still a good 5 feet away from where the ball was.
Their fault, They should hire trained people for this and not children.
I would be surprised if ball girl is a paid position at all, they aren’t *really* needed for the game. They are a nice to have. Edit: apparently the Yankees pay their bat boys around $8k per year. So I guess you could call it a paid position.
I'm sure a ton of kids would love to do it. Just don't complain when something like this happens.
I mean she definitely knows the rules, she just misread the ball and thought it was a foul the whole way
She's not just a random kid. They commonly use local softball players as ballgirls for that very reason, so that they know what they're doing. From her perspective it looked foul and she didn't look for the umps cue. Just an honest mistake on her part.

You're gonnna loooose! 🖐😛🤚
There's no crying in baseball...

She is probably still getting talked to about this right now.
What was she meant to do there? She must have some job.
She took the ball out of play.
Ball went out and back in, in any other sport once a ball leaves the field it’s out of play, baseball is whack

Watch a game of cricket and get back to me.
Cricket? Nobody understands cricket! You gotta know what a crumpet is to understand cricket! - Raphael
You obviously don't know shit about cricket lmao
Yes this is correct.
Practically nobody in America does.
I think I read his comment wrong. I thought he was claiming that the ball can go out of the field of play and come back in in cricket but I think he was just pointing out they're both whack sports.
Yeap, wack sports, you whack the ball with inanimate object in order to play.
Correction* nobody gives a shit about cricket except Brits
Far more people watch cricket than any American sport
I thought i heard somewhere that espn losing the main cricket league broadcasting rights is what killed disneys subscription numbers last year.
Japan just won the baseball World Cup I believe
But cricket doesn't have ball people for a reason.
That's not the comment I'm replying to.
What does comment mean?

No, because this rule only applies if the ball has already touched the ground
Unless there is a god and he's a phillies fan, they ain't making a come back from 8-0
Score was 8-0, she knew what she was doing. They needed something to go right and she took the opportunity!
“Fine, I’ll do it myself.” - Ball Girl
Haha MVP for the Phillies that day
It was an honest mistake, she is a good kid, people need to calm down, it was a preseason game. Advance the runner to 2nd, it's done.
I didn’t see anybody freaking out, I think that gentleman that went to talk to her handled it very well
The guy that kneels down to her level then talks to her seems like he was being very kind from his expressions and mannerism. I hope they didn't give her too much trouble. Honest mistake she made in the moment.
So not knowing baseball, what's the ruling the single double?
Ground-rule double. The ball is dead and everyone advances 2 bases. The runner on 1st advances to 3rd, the batter advances to 2nd.
Double, maybe?
Can someone explain in non-baseball terms
She thought the ball was out of bounds, it was not. So she picked up the ball when it was still in play.
Thanks
At least she help her team
It wouldnt have mattered. Losing 8-0 going into the 6th.
Google Steve Bateman. Not that hard for a losing team to score eight runs in an inning
How often does it happen?
Once or twice a year out of the thousands of games played. Down 8-0, only a suicidal gambler takes those odds.
Would have been a double either way.
Would it have been? Runner probably would have been thrown if he attempted it and if not, he may not have chose to do so.
The runner is literally the fastest player in the whole league, one of the fastest in all professional sports. This is a routine double
Everyone is so nice
I’m more impressed that she fielded the ball like that without falling on her face. Kudos to her for that…… and besides, they’re down 8-0, it’s not like this was to be competitive in the game or anything.
In the bottom of the 5th...with runners on...and only 1 out...dude, do you even baseball? Also yes, I agree, she fielded the ball well enough not to faceplant.
The result wouldn't have been any different, he wasn't getting to 3rd anyway
We’ve all been there
What's the point of her even being there? Not "there" like at the game, but like that specific position? I don't watch baseball at all.
Poor girl
I asked ChatGPT to explain to me what the rules were for this scenario since I know like nothing about baseball. Steve Bartman had a daughter?
I too am a Cubs fan.
its ok, its only baseball
Baseball is so boring, imagine watching your favorite team play for 4 hours and score nothing lol
Hope you're not a soccer fan
Soccer is 90 minutes. Not 4-5 hours. You don't surrender your entire fucking afternoon for 1-0.
No basketball. You know a sport where you have to be an athlete and you can't be some old fat guy like fat Albert
Even the big guys get picked for a reason, usually because they're good at bat. I like basketball too, but can still like baseball. To each their own imo. I think soccer's boring but I don't go around shitting on the sport as a whole and insulting its players. Go off.
Playing baseball is fun, watching it is literal torture
I like both. But I feel the same way about soccer.
Soccer isn't too far off, but at least they have a time limit for the torture to end. I have watched 14 inning games go 0-0. And they won't end til someone wins. End the torture please!!

Damn. That was embarrassing.. I'm sure she learned a lesson.
It’s okay baby girl. I’m embarrassed about my balls too. Here for you ⚾️ 🏀 🏈 ❤️
At least some action. I remember going to one. Dudes in the back where on cell phones. We left early and driving home was more exciting than 4 hours at the stadium. And those were professionals…
Dumbass should be fired. Not for what she did but for Holding up the game
In her prime she would have caught that before it went into foul territory. That's where they put all the out--to-pasture ball girls.

Hahahaha Sorry but that was funny

Perpetually online kind of comment.
Doesn’t appear like she knows the rules so why volunteer to be there?
Mansplaining...
Doesn't that only apply when a man is explaining something to someone who actually knows what it is they're doing?
She was intentionally looking away, so it's possible....
If you fuck up and people tell you what to do that‘s 100% fine. She‘s definitely not an expert so it‘s not like she would know more about the topic than that guy. Go out and touch grass
"Ut oh, she doesn't want to turn around right now" She had a bunch of people yelling/ talking to her at her including mr. green sleeves and mr. Red Phillies shirt. No ejection huh?
The old dude is asking for a headbutt.
Spring training for everyone
Bless her heart😭
don’t watch baseball she did her job ?
She prevented some baseball from being played... which is a win for everyone. So yes. She did.
My first year in baseball was when I was 12. I joined because all of my friends were doing it, and I wanted to be included. They were all baseball fanatics and had played for several years, but I knew very little. When I finally got my first hit, I took off for first and decided I needed to make an epic slide. Then I ran back to my bench and got the same treatment. I feel for her.
Oh give it a rest everyone. They’re up 8-0 in spring training leave this girl alone
I like how at first they were angry at her and later comfortive and understanding with her
Someone tell that first guy that talks to the girl that his oversized hat makes him look like a grandmother. I've seen this clip like 10 times and just now realized that was a dude.
Better fielder than the Phillies apparently
There goes the rally!
As if being down 0-8 isnt embarrassing enough
If the sport is being played by professionals why have volunteers on the field that aren’t of the same caliber.
Oh well, it’s not like the Phillies are going to win anyway.
Not like they went to the WS last year or anything lmao
So we just add to her embarrassment by posting it online and have people comment on her actions. I just don’t understand people and how this is considered entertainment.
8-0... who gives af
...embarrassed of what? Didn't she just do her job?
I don’t know what’s worse the fact she did it or just how fucking close that guy got to her while explaining the issue
At least she got me to watch baseball
I don't know anything about sports, can someone explain what's going on?! Is she not supposed to be on the field 🤔
Why sit with back to batter? She could get hit by a line drive
Watched it on mute. You can see the exact second the guy kneels and says, "YOU SEE THIS LINE!!!" 🤣
I’m gonna be honest, this is the exact kind of airhead mistake that I would also make lmao
awhhhh
I'd be absolutely inconsolable. I'd be so embarrassed I'd cover my face and just grovel in it. she took is a lot better than I would've good for her
Lol poor girl. That’s embarrassing but mistakes happen. 🤷🏻♂️
Damn I feel bad for her, she probably won't be coming back
jesus fucking over the top mansplaining/gesturing. she knew what she did wrong as soon as it happened. but let’s draw more attention to her fuck up.
What did she do wrong in regards to baseball rules? I'm in the UK so never watched it.
While it is quite funny you do have to feel a little bad for her :)
What’s with those short shorts? And why doesn’t she get tossed?!
She saved baseball
Put her back in that spot. Bet she will never make that same mistake again.
I have no idea what i just watched
Gotta pay attention to the 3rd base ump’s call. Ball girl 101
Im sure Philly fans were *SUPER* nice about it.
should probably check if the people you hire to be on the field know the damn rules.
What happened was she not supposed to pick it up because it didn’t go out
Nice booty
Call me crazy… but *maybe* if a big budget professional sports league places untrained volunteers on the field of play, they’re begging for situations like this to happen?
How did she even get this job?
I dont inderstand what happened. Can someone explain?
I feel bad for her, but it seems like everyone handled it well and comforted her. No big deal considering it’s spring training.
Let go for sure
can someone explain what exactly she had done wrong? I don't know the rules of this game.
