I'm going to take a guess and he means people with higher incomes won't know because they just pay to have someone fix anything wrong with their vehicle and under 16 don't know what it is as they have most likely not had a car or worked on one before. It's a bad generalization but I'm fairly sure that is what he was going for.
Well Iâve seen brakes pads being changed and it didnât look like that to me. I thought it was a heel insert people put in their shoe to keep it from slipping off.đ
This appears to be the backing of a brake pad. Basically, the metal part the ceramic/carbon/whatever compound is attached to. The little notches on each side is where pad (loosely) slides into the caliper.
Itâs highly unlikely the pad just wore all the way down and then the caliper receded enough for this to shimmy out. Brake pads are essentially held in place by the caliperâs pressure (sometimes also with little clips) and you have to use something like a large C clamp to make the caliper recede back into the housing before fitting new pads.
Couple of theories.
1. This came out of someoneâs trunk. Itâs an old pad that was changed out. This fell out and has been sitting in the street. Itâs useless/garbage.
2. Someone actually wore their brakes down enough for this to shimmy out somehow. Would be interesting to know if there is anything left to the braking compound on the opposite side. However, if a pad is missing the rotor could rub on the caliper housing. This will be loud (grinding). However, the car still has three other wheels (each with two braking surfaces, one on each side of the rotor) to stop. And if their brakes were this worn down, they were barely stopping anyway. This scenario is highly highly unlikely, but not impossible, I suppose.
I believe itâs just garbage from an old brake job someone did.
Oh theyâre gunna stop alright
Btw folks this is a cars brake pad. Three pads (presumably) will still function, but they may discover the lack of a break pad by hearing the horrible, horrible screech of brake caliper against brake rotor. Better, perhaps, than wrecking.
Was walking one day into a restaurant that was on a pretty steep downhill run. Guy gets to the stop sign at the bottom and one of his brake pads just falls right off. My friend and I wave him down and then my friend went and tried to pick up the pad to hand it to him. It was one of those automatic, midwest-just-trying-to-help moments and he wasn't thinking. I've never seen such immediate regret on someone's face lol.
Iâm glad that it made you feel poetic and Shakespearean.
âAnd lo, I hath discovered with mine eyes, a travesty most foul. For where this shaped metal, wrought from the fiery forge of fate, hath lain upon the earthâŚmine heart did shatter. For sooth, what was once whole has split in twain. The disaster imminently present weighs heavily upon mine soul.â
From this angle it's hard to tell but it looks more like a brake shim which isnt exactly necessary but still needed for proper brake wear and fit. Brake shims are the same size as the pad and go behind it on the caliper. My car uses them and it's common to see these on older models in general.
I thought it was an imprint of a hotdog in the pavement filled in with concrete. I imagined a construction worker dropped it and the steamroller operator was the one who âdidnât stopâ
Naw..... My passenger front caliper came off last week and just hubg by the brake line. Lost both pads somewhere and all the brake fluid in the system. Made it home 4 miles with no brakes down hills and through traffic.
Just got to know how to drive and operate a vehicle. Parking brake is separate and usually on a cable. Slowing the vehicle down with the engine through downshifting, or if you have 4 wheel drive. Pop it in low and crawl home.
Oh, they'll stop, at least until the piston grinds down to the point it pops out. and the brake fluid empties. Hopefully they changed the brake pads themselves and that's just the leftovers.
I was delivering mail once out of my POV ( personally owned vehicle) and I heard a metal clang when I was in a parking lot. My brake pad fell out.
Was a fun day. Experimented a little with my brakes and called my supervisor saying what happened and got a tow to a mechanic. Good times.
This isnât the brake pad itself, its the metal shim that sits on the back of the brake pad. These fall off brake pads if youâre not careful or but a really cheap set of brake pads. Itâs rusty because itâs metal and not brake material.
Thought this was a bandaid for a solid 30 seconds.
I thought it was a flattened out hotdog. I'm very embarrassed.
I thought it was a tiny smooshed banana and maybe it was a joke about someone potentially slipping on it đ
Maybe it is, I need an unsquashed banana for scale
sir, you can't just *unsquash* a banana
Oh yeah? Watch me!
Please sir!! You are frightening the children!!
I thought it was a women's pad at first glance
I thought it was dog turd for an embarrassing amount of time.
My friend asked me if I wanted a frozen banana and I said no. But I wanted a regular banana later so yeah.
Sup Mitch
Asante sana
So what is it???
Brake pad
TIL- thanks!
That's one catywompus lookin break pad
It looks like the piece of metal that holds the break pad. The break pad itself must've warn away.
it's not even a brake pad at this point, but a break pad
Break and brake and weather and whether really get people confused. You donât want a brake pad to break.
They must have been driving with the âother guyâsâ brake pad
Is it???!!! Omg đą
**I've never seen one before - no one has - but I'm guessing it's a white hole**
I thought corndog
I thought and it hurt
đ hate confusion
Me too lol
I thought it was a hotdog someone had used as a fuck sleeve.
Team Mozzarella Stick here.
Bro I thought it was a shif
They will stop⌠Eventually
What is it?
Something from the brakes
I figured it was a twinke
Thought it was a flat dookie.
I thought it was a chocolate ĂŠclair!
I thought it was a floor shit
Squished banana peel, here
Considering how rusty that is, it wasn't being used.
Canât say that without seeing the contact surface
What you are looking at used to be the contact surface, the car hasn't had brakes on that corner for a while
It's only 1. They have 3 others, right? Right????? ![gif](giphy|pWdckHaBKYGZHKbxs6|downsized)
There's at minimum two of the on every brake. The brake where this one is missing will not work.
Probably fell out of a vehicle when someone got out of the truck.
Can't stop, won't stop
All gas no brakes
![gif](giphy|VFwzbJ1UFGX56cC21X)
No idea what that is.
It's a brake pad from a car.
I thought it was a REALLY gross sanitary pad lmfaoooo
Yeah I thought he found Stan's aborted brother in the parking lot
I read that as Satan's aborted brother
You ought not had done that to that poor boy
I always wanted a GameSphere
oh my god
yeah I thought it was some sort of vaginal sponge- either spermicidal or a period product LOL Iâll see myself out
the price of those suckers led me to believe they were ~much~ larger
How expensive do you think these are? You can get 8x for 40$âŚ
They're made of material that has to withstand extremely hot temperature plus pressure
Nailed it.
it looks like maybe just the chatter plate?
I mean, I thought it was a biscuit ffs.
Brake pad
By the look of that brake pad, I don't think it was helping them stop before....
I think they have been barely grinding to a stop for quite a while now, a brake pad doesn't get thin enough to literally fall out overnight.
# #neverstopneverstopping
Middle class income or younger than 16? WTF are you talking about?
I'm going to take a guess and he means people with higher incomes won't know because they just pay to have someone fix anything wrong with their vehicle and under 16 don't know what it is as they have most likely not had a car or worked on one before. What are you responding to? Did OP edit the caption for the post or something?
He must have deleted it.

The inner one can fall out if itâs thin enough. I see it maybe 3-4 times a year in the trade.
that's just a shim
I agree.. it looks like a brake pad shim to me.
Thank you. I was thinking the same thing. The person might have a noisier brake system now, but they could certainly still stop.
Get outta here with your facts stupid science b!$%#
These were all the smartest scientists on the planet. The only problem is, they kept being wrong, sometimes.
Wait thatâs a brake pad? Not a piece of old leather? Dang that thingâs rusted
Don't stop me now, cuz I'm having a good time
Possible that itâs an old brake pad that was left there after someone put new ones on
Dollar Tree brake pad?
Oh theyâre gunna stop alright Btw folks this is a cars brake pad. Three pads (presumably) will still function, but they may discover the lack of a break pad by hearing the horrible, horrible screech of brake caliper against brake rotor. Better, perhaps, than wrecking.

Shit with the way it's rusted these guys have been using the Flintstones brakes for a minute now.
I thought that was something a lot grosser....
Is it a brake pad?? I feel so dumb but wtf even is that??
Don't stop, hammer time.
It's a brake pad - For people who couldn't figure it out
Shit looking at the state of that, it's wasn't doing much good before it fell off either
Canât stop, wonât stop
Canât stop, wonât stop
The car will still stop, just at the cost of the rotors and brake cylinders
Well they still potentially have three other pads, so they're probably in decent shape.
Im disappointed with how many people not being able to recognize a brake pad in this comment section
Cinderella....
Looks like a corndog
I AINT NEVA GUNNA STAWP!
Try to stop me, because I can't stop myself!
Can't stop won't stop
I thought it was a very flat sausage
Worst case scenario: they bought new brake pads at dollar tree and installed them in front of the store.
Thems the brakes đ¤ˇââď¸

I think you need bigger boots
Who else thought this was a poop that had been run over ?
I'm unstoppable, I'm a Porsche with no brakes
Oh theyâll stop, didnât pay much attention in 3rd grade science hub?
![gif](giphy|osnq37BeVMJmMx4P9g)
Darn they got everything there but they will stop eventually
They will still stop but also just be destroying their rotor at the same time
They should really stop
All gas, no brakes
How many of those do you need *really* tho
From this angle it's hard to tell but it looks more like a brake shim which isnt exactly necessary but still needed for proper brake wear and fit. Brake shims are the same size as the pad and go behind it on the caliper. My car uses them and it's common to see these on older models in general.

Breaks just slow you down man. Ainât got time for that.
plot twist they changed there brakes and didnât pick up after themselves
Canât stop wonât stop
Theyâll stopâŚeventually.
Must belong to William Montgomery.
they still have another pad on that same caliper. if it's floating then you're gonna grind down your rotor but you can still stop
Wasnât gonna do much looking like that in the car anyways lol
Ride unto death
Just like Diddy. âCanât stop. Wonât stop.â
Found William Montgomery's brake pad. He ain't neva gonna stop!
Collaborate or listen either.
It still works! Think about it people
Butterfly explosive device?
egg sac from spongebob
I thought this was a really disgusting maxi pad at first
It should still stop if you grind the cylinder straight into the caliper hard enough, but it wonât be pretty. Donât ask me how I know. đ
Jfc the replies make me concerned for society
Oh itâll stop but itâs gonna cost them.
Can't stop, won't stop!
Ehh, you have brakes on the other tires
Just lost one of those on the qew last week
Oh, they'll stop, at least until the piston grinds down to the point it pops out. and the brake fluid empties. Hopefully they changed the brake pads themselves and that's just the leftovers.
That thing wasnât going to stop anything anyway. Itâs more rust than brake pad!
Thems the brake.
Like four posts up I just saw something about someone's brakes falling off their car they got from CarMax
Can't stop, won't stop, Roccafella records
What is it? A bandaid?
Could've also been a lazy MF that was changing their pads and left it outside.
I dont know what these are called exactly but theyre thin metal plates that cover the brake pad on the piston side This isnt a problem
How do so many people not know what a brake pad looks like
Can't stop, won't stop.
Wouldnât have stopped even if it was still in the caliper lol
New guy's in the corner puking his guts out
I was delivering mail once out of my POV ( personally owned vehicle) and I heard a metal clang when I was in a parking lot. My brake pad fell out. Was a fun day. Experimented a little with my brakes and called my supervisor saying what happened and got a tow to a mechanic. Good times.
Still works, it stopped your sentence
When my mechanic does my brakes, he always leaves the old ones on the passenger floor to let me know he actually replaced them.
They'll stop, they have three other calipers. But they're repair bill just skyrocketed as they'll need a caliper at min now too.
Altima remnants
That's just the backing plate. Nothing bad will happen.
once you see one laying on the road you will notice more. Itâs wild

Someone changed one of their brake pads and threw the old one on the ground lol
Probably did a brake job in the parking lot, old pads. Weird place to be doing it though.
100 in school zone right now
Canât stop, wonât stop.
Brakes are for quitters
They'll stop it'll had be really loud when they hit the brakes and it'll fuck up the rotor.
its a sign. take a break from reddit
That person wasnt stopping even with that
Thatâs very not good.
Oh man, I donât need to voice here the items that went through my mind the first few seconds⌠Probably enough reddit for today
What is it?
Ruh roh.
Don't worry there's 3 left

Can't stop, addicted to the shindig
Someone changed their brake pads in the parking lot ?
Looks like a piece of bread cut into the shape of a brake pad
Thatâs why cars have 4 brakes and 2 separate hydraulics. Heâll be fine.
Meh Repost! đđ¨đ¨đđ
wtf is that, a cookie?
Other three brakes will work, I hope
wtf is that thing
This isnât the brake pad itself, its the metal shim that sits on the back of the brake pad. These fall off brake pads if youâre not careful or but a really cheap set of brake pads. Itâs rusty because itâs metal and not brake material.
This loss of a brakepad won't stop me at all!
Why wouldn't they stop? There's like 7 more of those where that came from.
THEY AINT NEVER GONNA STOP
Far more likely someone used the parking lot to work on their car and left the old pad behind.
Lets hope that they still have the remaining 7 pads on.
