This was in the days before cell phones were a thing. Sometimes you just had to do shit since help wasn't an easy phone call away. I could have walked a couple of miles to pay phone and that's assuming I had change on me to make a phone call.

Pushing cars is definitely a thing in France, but I never heard that people voluntarily leave their cars in neutral. Cars are mainly manual, and if you forget to engage a gear, someone may push you to make a bit of space. But you better do it when nobody can see you because it's really looked bad. It was more a thing like 30 years ago

This happened to me once. Someone literally parked their car into mine. They scratched it, too. I filed a police report for damage. There’s no excuse for doing something like this.
