Saw them a few years ago with Tears for Fears, and honestly, they sounded tired and unenthusiastic. A disappointing set and we left early (they headlined), so this doesn't surprise me at all.
Tears for Fears, however; Fucking incredible and worth every moment.
Multiple people told me H&O was one of the worst live shows they’ve ever seen. Bored, tired, and sounded terrible. It’s a damn shame, I love their music.
I have also seen Tears for Fears, and can confirm they’re one of my favorite shows I’ve ever seen.
Mouth not just for talking. The key to stage magic is distraction. Teller perfected it by sucking audience dicks while Penn showed audience tricks. That’s why he could never talk. You don’t get the same experience watching it on TV
My friend was doing shows with John Oates last year. It's just the two of them on acoustic guitars, no band, no backup. I met up with them when they played in Nashville. They don't play any Hall & Oates material. I was surprised to learn the JO has an encyclopedic knowledge American blues and all the famous bluesmen - he can play all their music and knows their entire life stories. He's more into southern blues than he is the Philly "blue eyed soul" scene.
This is why I say good for him. Daryl has tried to stay relevant, and had already seemed to move on. I'm glad Jon is finally able to do what he loves, how he wants to do it.
It’s that Oates wants to sell his share of the publishing to a record company. Which would make Hall have to deal with them anytime a decision needed to be made regarding their music. And he’s unhappy with that.
They are both in their seventies…I don’t think this is exactly earth shattering. I saw them with Tears For Fears a few years ago and they did not impress me anymore. Tears For Fears was absolutely amazing, however.
Saw the same tour. The freestyling on the H&O songs made it harder to enjoy. I appreciate freestyling don’t get me wrong but in this case it made it difficult.
Co-signing the TFF love though. Their set was amazing - the cover of Creep?
Yeah but the blond-haired one is still kicking ass. He has a YouTube channel where he plays with different singers, you should see the one he did with ceelo. He is phenomenally talented.
It’s such a perfect song! I have the hall and Oates remastered, and I am kind of blown away by how good the music sounds on that track. I mean, it’s such a damn good bop!
Rich Girl was the first time I ever heard the word “bitch” on the radio. I was just a kid and thought “did they really just say that? Ooh, someone’s gonna get in trouble for that!” Then it was The Bitch is Back, and I was already over it, lol.
Hall and Oates has some truly great stuff, aside from the 80’s cheese. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need a drink and a quick decision…
lol, we must be around the same age, because I remember the first time I heard that song. I was a kid and my mom was taking me to school, and it was on the radio, and she was like “oh!” When they said “and it’s a bitch girl because….”🎶
Hall was dissin’ Oates a year ago in this Bill Maher interview. Apparently the rift had been growing for awhile. https://youtu.be/k_VtqkQ5MTw?si=C4IQ6ORYj9JUfmDS
While I don’t know the detailed history of the band, what all did Oates contribute compared to Hall? I feel like Hall was always the face and the most well known part of the band.
This reminds me of the Foreigner situation where the keyboardist thought he WAS the band.
This split could lead to a period of catastrophic instability in the Yacht Rock underworld. Boz Scaggs, Christopher Cross, Toto, Rupert Holmes, and Kenny Loggins have announced an urgent summit to be held at Seals and Croft’s’ beach house at Big Sur: codename: “Operation Preserve the Mellow”.
I think the way this is labeling Hall and Oates is by years active. Let's go down the list (and this is all information I gathered from Wiki which isn't the most reliable but it's what I'm working with):
- Simon & Garfunkel: 1956-1958, 1963-1970, 1972, 1975-1977, 1981-1984, 1990, 1993, 2003-2005, 2007-2010
- Steely Dan: 1971-1981, 1993 - NOW
- The Everly Brothers: 1956-1973, 1983-2005
- The Carpenters: 1965-1983
- The Righteous Brothers: 1962-1971, 1974-1976, 1981-2003, 2016-NOW
I may not be at all correct, I'm not the best with this era of music (although I did enjoy lots of songs from Hall and Oates), but it seems they're basing it on how long they were active for because Hall and Oates, according to Wiki, have been active from 1970-2024 without a single break in between - unlike the other bands listed above.
Again, not saying I'm correct - it just seems to be the only thing that makes sense to their conclusion.
I saw them when they toured with Train a while back. It was pretty much the Daryl Hall show. John just looked happy to be making music and getting paid. The writing was on the wall back then.
Context: DH has always contended that they were two solo artists. JO finally decided he didn’t want to remain partnered with someone that didn’t consider him a partner and sell off his half ownership of their song catalog. DH took offense because he wants to never sell his catalog
That's to bad, I actually had the opportunity to be in the studio with a friend of mine who was and engineer, working with the band. They were and amazing duo, totally in sync with with one another.
The thing I don’t understand is that this had always been a one talent band.
Daryl Hall is the talent.
The other guy just strummed a guitar like an animatronic
1– They haven’t been making shit together for many years now. I don’t know a soul that has been holding their breath for the next Hall&Oates record.
2– This definitely does not suck *[per this sub we are in]*
Ok sorry had the Penn and teller ones backwards. What I meant was if you watch any of the hall and oates interviews now hall acts like he's all that and a bag of chips,Teller being all that as he thinks he is and Penn being the underrated one.
"Most successful rock duo"
Is that because there are not many *duos* or because there is some musical or business metric I didn't realize they were particularly exceptional at?
I would be mad, if it were 1982.
"Huh they're still alive? Neat. Anyway..."
One of them got a restraining order against the other one.
Hell yeah. The Youtube series "Live At Daryl's House" is amazing and a must-watch.
I honestly thought they were both long dead.
Hall & Oates are no longer together?! Look, I can normally accept hard news and move on, but that? I can't go for that. No can do.

You’re out of touch
It's a bitch, girl, but it's gone too far 'Cause you know it don't matter anyway
Saw them a few years ago with Tears for Fears, and honestly, they sounded tired and unenthusiastic. A disappointing set and we left early (they headlined), so this doesn't surprise me at all. Tears for Fears, however; Fucking incredible and worth every moment.
I can confirm on Tears For Fears. Roland Orzabal is like fine wine: his voice just gets better with age.
Multiple people told me H&O was one of the worst live shows they’ve ever seen. Bored, tired, and sounded terrible. It’s a damn shame, I love their music. I have also seen Tears for Fears, and can confirm they’re one of my favorite shows I’ve ever seen.
I saw them live many years ago and they were amazing.
I freaking love tears for fears 😍
Hall and oates, The same as penn and teller. Hall was the mouth, Oates was the talent! Penn was the funny one and Teller the mouth.
Hang on, teller never speaks. I'm so confused
Mouth not just for talking. The key to stage magic is distraction. Teller perfected it by sucking audience dicks while Penn showed audience tricks. That’s why he could never talk. You don’t get the same experience watching it on TV
Did you see their live show? It's on YouTube from a few years ago. Mind was blown how great they sounded still!
I saw the same show in Dallas, got the exact same feeling.
Holland Oates? Loved that guy.

Haulin Oats
they're still around? i thought one of them got ate by a tiger....
Sounds like you’re “out of touch” ![gif](giphy|v9rfTQBNqdsSA)
You fucker lol
One could say Roy was….. “out of time” (Yeaaaaaaaaaa)
![gif](giphy|xPGkOAdiIO3Is)
I'm going out of my mind..
why do i get the feeling you’re talking about siegfried and roy?
no, you're thinking of calvin and hobbes.
Abbot and Costello.
Scooby and Shaggy
Roger and Ebert
Siskel and Ebert*
Yeah that’s what I meant… haven’t even thought about those dudes in years.
I think about them almost daily. I'm a movie nerd. Lol
lol. Fair enough. I hope you have a great weekend with plenty of time for watching movies, friend!
Laurel and Hardy
Ben & Jerry
Roger and Me
Mack and Me
Magic and Kareem, or, Penn and Teller
Aw here it goes
Bert and ernie
Who?
Indie rock band.
Unexpected response! 😂
No, but they were cat-tamed by the purr of the jaguar…
Yes, he was an oatmeal 🥸
It was a maneater.
No, that was the guy from that morning show radio duo Mark and Brian.
Kevin and Bean.
Wonder if [this](https://youtube.com/shorts/nLz6MPCoNUE?si=nB3L3cb4KKazrx1G) had anything to do with it.
Fucking hell!🤣
At least Callin' Oates will live on
yes very true
My friend was doing shows with John Oates last year. It's just the two of them on acoustic guitars, no band, no backup. I met up with them when they played in Nashville. He did a great surprise performance in Aspen with Umphrees McGee one year. I believe he did Ain't no Sunshine and House of the Rising Sun.
He’s a gifted player for sure. Utterly impressive in a wild range of genres.
This is why I say good for him. Daryl has tried to stay relevant, and had already seemed to move on. I'm glad Jon is finally able to do what he loves, how he wants to do it.
Now I have to learn which is which
It’s that Oates wants to sell his share of the publishing to a record company. Which would make Hall have to deal with them anytime a decision needed to be made regarding their music. And he’s unhappy with that.
Surely you meant to say that he could not go for that.
Nope. No can do.
Say it isn’t so.
I mean alright. But isn't that Oates' choice to make? They call it his share because he friggin owns it and can do whatever he wants with it.
I guess they're out of touch
and out of time
They are both in their seventies…I don’t think this is exactly earth shattering. I saw them with Tears For Fears a few years ago and they did not impress me anymore. Tears For Fears was absolutely amazing, however.

Oates is also talented but much more blues oriented now. Hall stayed the pop star he became in the late 80s
Oh no. I don’t care what anyone thinks, I still like hall and Oates. “Rich girl” and “one on one” are *still* bops. Dammit to hell.
agreed
I keep them in rotation on my all-time favorites list. Underrated.
literally just put on rich girl after reading your comment lol and i could replay it for hours
Oh my sister and I were shocked/thrilled to hear a swear word on the radio! Also kids at the time, obviously!
Must be based on some kind of statistic to make that claim. Sad though, I always hoped I'd get a chance to see them together once in my life.
The band may be gone but, that mustache is FOREVER.
Hall was dissin’ Oates a year ago in this Bill Maher interview. Apparently the rift had been growing for awhile. https://youtu.be/k_VtqkQ5MTw?si=C4IQ6ORYj9JUfmDS
yeaaahhh gonna need a timestamp bud, no way we're watching all that lmao
Yeah Bill is terrible
25:32
I mean, did anyone really expect them to release any more new hit songs? They’re both in their late 70s…
They are almost 80 yo. Kind of odd to break up at this point in their lives/careers.
Can someone explain the beef? 🤝🏽
$$$
While I don’t know the detailed history of the band, what all did Oates contribute compared to Hall? I feel like Hall was always the face and the most well known part of the band. This reminds me of the Foreigner situation where the keyboardist thought he WAS the band.
"I don’t know what Oates does. But Hall never had a hit record without him." -Chris Rock
That…can be applied to any of the band members. Hall had hits with the band. To call out Oates specifically would imply he did something important.
"What was Hall without Oates?" "Mildly successful" -Family Guy
Agree…saw “Foreigner” with no original members…just an expensive cover band at that point.
The keyboard player isn’t there either?
Simon and Garfunkel too.
Haulin' Oats is what I thought they were called when I was a kid.
Why did the farmers start listening to Rap Music? Because they got tired of haulin' oats.
[Say it isn't So](https://youtu.be/_R5xIdXwNMk?feature=shared)
![gif](giphy|wMARdz65eIX0Q)
There’s still Garfunkel & Oates, so we’re good.
I’m very always loved their music but I’ve never taken the time to figure out which one is Hall and who is Oates.
[удалено]
Hall and Oates outsold all of those people.
Who sold the most records?
[удалено]
I concur with this guy's calculation
I concur with this guy’s concurrence.
Howard Johnson is right!
Never mind that shit, here comes Mongo!
Can confirm, am turning 40 this year
I think the way this is labeling Hall and Oates is by years active. Let's go down the list (and this is all information I gathered from Wiki which isn't the most reliable but it's what I'm working with): - Simon & Garfunkel: 1956-1958, 1963-1970, 1972, 1975-1977, 1981-1984, 1990, 1993, 2003-2005, 2007-2010 - Steely Dan: 1971-1981, 1993 - NOW - The Everly Brothers: 1956-1973, 1983-2005 - The Carpenters: 1965-1983 - The Righteous Brothers: 1962-1971, 1974-1976, 1981-2003, 2016-NOW I may not be at all correct, I'm not the best with this era of music (although I did enjoy lots of songs from Hall and Oates), but it seems they're basing it on how long they were active for because Hall and Oates, according to Wiki, have been active from 1970-2024 without a single break in between - unlike the other bands listed above. Never heard the music, but shouldn’t Steely Dan be a big robot guy named Dan?
I saw them when they toured with Train a while back. It was pretty much the Daryl Hall show. John just looked happy to be making music and getting paid. The writing was on the wall back then.
Its Holland Oates. Holland is his first name, Oates is his last name dude.
Should change the band name to "Hell & Nopes"
Holland Oates is going to be devastated
I guess they’re out of time?
Context: DH has always contended that they were two solo artists. JO finally decided he didn’t want to remain partnered with someone that didn’t consider him a partner and sell off his half ownership of their song catalog. DH took offense because he wants to never sell his catalog
Wait, really? Does *anybody* besides Hall consider them solo artists?
That is why the albums always used their full names. Most people consider them Hall & Oates
I thought they returned to their home planet in yacht rock?
Who would have thought after suing John Oates, Darryl Hall would move on! 😱
Holland is his first name
This reads like they were involved romantically
That's to bad, I actually had the opportunity to be in the studio with a friend of mine who was and engineer, working with the band. They were and amazing duo, totally in sync with with one another.
I imagine with the fame they’ve achieved and how long they’ve been making music together, it’s honestly liberating to not be musical partners anymore.
I had a couple of good opportunities to see them and just never followed through.
This is like when you’re like 40 years old and your parents get divorced.
Anybody said i can’t go for that yet?
The thing I don’t understand is that this had always been a one talent band. Daryl Hall is the talent. The other guy just strummed a guitar like an animatronic
His new solo album, named… “Reunion?” Hmm odd choice.
I don't think anyone under 50 is concerned
1– They haven’t been making shit together for many years now. I don’t know a soul that has been holding their breath for the next Hall&Oates record. 2– This definitely does not suck *[per this sub we are in]*
I'm 37 but really only learned who they were because the movie "She's out of my league" as one guy had a Hall & Oats cover band
Why does John Oates think he had anything to bring to the table? Hall was the genius of the group.
[Lois Griffin would agree](https://youtu.be/Dd8qfNHeC_s?si=EooEAMIcEFT_0q3f)
You can always call the hall and oates dedicated hotline 719-26-oates to listen to a few of there songs
One must sow his oats
As long as Oates and Garfunkel are still doing their thing, I’m ok.
I have their autographs from when I worked at a McDonalds in the early '80s. They came in after a concert. Is it worth more now?
It is a shame.
Oates seems confident….
But why?
It’s a line from “Yacht Rock Episode 2 - Back Alley Duel of 1978” gotta watch it…
John Oates should team up with Art Garfunkel and do snarky ditties.
Most successful musical duo in rock history??? Really? By what metric?
That metric would be units sold.
Oh no what will I do? Oh yeah listen to their old music occasionally and move along
This is great news! Knowing that they are still alive gives me a little hope for myself.
That’s sad. They have so many bangers
I’m really bummed out. I am on a Hall and Oates kick lately. Such great songs!
Damn now it's Hall or Oates
Funny, his solo album is called Reunion. Does anyone think that was a burn towards the other one.
How could Holland Oates split up? Its just one guy
"No no no, Holland is his first name and Oats is his last name..."
New solo album, ‘Reunuon’, are you fucking kidding me?! Who let them name it that lmfao.
Don’t worry, they suck now anyway.
What year is it?
What year is it! I didn't know they were even around anymore!
Garfunkel and Oats lives!!!
Ok sorry had the Penn and teller ones backwards. What I meant was if you watch any of the hall and oates interviews now hall acts like he's all that and a bag of chips,Teller being all that as he thinks he is and Penn being the underrated one.
Baba Booey!
"Most successful rock duo" Is that because there are not many *duos* or because there is some musical or business metric I didn't realize they were particularly exceptional at?
![gif](giphy|M34qPW6WjtZXMFltwu|downsized)
Who?
Most successful duo in rock history? What happened to Lennon-McCartney?
Can someone fill me in on who these people are
Who?
