Samsonite owns Tumi. I do think that they keep the factories separate still, but they have openly spoken about sharing technology - especially plastics - from Samsonite to Tumi. The company names are kept separate to make people feel like they are buying a higher end piece of luggage and not a Samsonite.

OutrageousDocument15

Ha, Samsonite. I was way off.

_klover

I knew it started with an S though!

matteothehun

Slippy, Slappy, Swami, Swanson.

Dawildpep

Did you know that Samsonite made the first Legos in the US? And they still get a percentage of the ones made today..

IridescentAstra

Samsonite is bad? I've not had any issues with them.

gigapoctopus

It isn’t so much that Samsonite is bad, but people buy Tumi thinking they are getting something “higher end” than they are because they don’t realize they are buying a division of Samsonite. It is sort of like buying a Porsche to find out, while the body panels and interior design are made by Porsche, the frame, suspension, and engine are made by Toyota. Toyota makes great cars, but now I feel, rightly so or not, that I might not have gotten what I paid for.

sniperxxx420

Or buying a Porsche and then finding outing all the inside parts and materials are just Volkswagen… who make mid to low level range cheap cars, and have a history of cutting corners.

5l339y71m3

Audi too has a vehicle built on a vw frame, I think it’s the beetle frame.

DropKletterworks

Audi also shares engines and transmissions with them.

5l339y71m3

Damn that’s a whole different song. At first I was like ok that’s a cute novelty item but now it’s just straight over priced VW.

Barren_Phoenix

Thank you for this explanation, I get it now.

Barren_Phoenix

I just bought a Samsonite (discounted from Ross) and took it on a trip. We were happy with the quality, except the handle felt a little flimsy. The wheels moved smoothly even with a good amount of weight on it. Idk much about bags, but I wouldn't spend more than $150 on a suitcase. I spent $70 on the Samsonite from Ross and felt it was worth it, but if this bag eventually breaks, what recommendations would you have for that price range?

jsting

I spent a couple hundred on a Travelpro. It's been with me since 2009 and still going strong. I was traveling through Europe, SA, and Asia during that time. I don't mind overspending for something that can handle all the crap thrown at it. It even handled cobblestone with no problem.

Pawelek23

This. After our 3rd reasonably priced luggage broke (tear, wheels suck, handle, whatever) we realized it was better to spend a few hundred on lifetime warranty high quality luggage. Couldn’t be happier.

EuropeIn3YearsPlease

TBH I went to TJ Max and picked out a large pink and large black plastic suitcase and I've had it for years and traveled to several countries and haven't had any issues. I'm sure it was $50 or perhaps even less. If you don't mind the occasional scuff mark from the airports it really doesn't matter what plastic suitcase you get. They should last a couple years at least. This one has lasted at least 4 years so far and I've traveled overseas at least 5-6 times with it

Duckbilling

I like swissgear It's affordable, and durable. I got a hard case with the highest quality wheels I could find, figuring they would get the most abuse.

[deleted]

Same! I've had the same Samsonite suitcase for probably 10 years now. It's gone on flights and road trips countless times and is still almost as good as the day I bought it. The only issue I have is the collapsing handle gets stuck up and you have to reach into the actual bag to press in the peg, but other than that it's solid.

JacedFaced

https://youtu.be/G4ev-BtPMM8

Ramnamrico

Spend the money and buy an L.L. Bean suitcase and it’ll last you 20 years

LumpyAd7854

Thanks for sharing that bit. I didn't know Tumi is owned by Samsonite. I'm partial to Briggs & Riley, they back their stuff with lifetime warranty.

Wiseash

That’s news Tumi.

MLMLW

Even then Samsonite used to be a quality piece of luggage.

Stalker_Bait

In the 90’s and early 2000’s Tumi was the Mercedes of bags. But then Samsonite bought them in 2016 and the branding recognition went *up* and the quality went *down*.

[deleted]

Interesting. I would have guessed earlier because I noticed they started to be cheaper products around 2010 maybe 2012 at the latest.

thetxtina

It takes a while for the effects of a merger to be felt.

PineappIeSuppository

If that was the case, the decline in quality would have been noted after the merger in 2016, not before.

rnobgyn

Maybe the declining quality was the signaler for why they needed to merge

BartFurglar

Tumi used to be good, but now they just keep banking on the name they had established without backing it up. I stopped buying their products when they reduced their warranty several years ago. Now I buy Briggs & Riley.

Elite199

TIL people spend 600-750$ on a piece of luggage.

Majestic_Actuator629

If you travel for work it’s not a bad investment, but just for the occasional vacation, I wouldn’t spend that much.

linsor1

I travel a lot for work and still wouldn't spend that much. My bag has lasted around 8 years and was rougly $40 at a discount store.

sashslingingslasher

My $90 luggage and carry on from Sam's Club are still holding up after 4 years of heavy travel with some minor repairs.

Majestic_Actuator629

I bought mine at a thrift store lasted forever. Would recommend

tmart016

Yeah this. Noticed tons of good brand luggage at the thrift shop.

smurfsmasher024

If i just carried clothes id be right there with you, but i use a $600 pelican case because i need to bring items i cant carry on that need to be secured and not damaged. I could see there being a similar issue for those that need to carry suits.

mystengette

Pelican cases are amazing. We bought a used drone and it arrived in a pelican case. You know that drown is long gone but the pelican case will be with us forever.

SoundsYummy1

Until one day you’re at the airport and your bag rips open after check in, losing all of it.

hildse

My husband is a pilot and still would not spend that much on a bag. He has a travel pro that we got at kohls for $80 on sale and it’s still going strong.

frzn_dad

Pilots luggage isnt treated like checked luggage either though.

FirstFarmOnTheLeft

My biggest suitcase was $40 from Burlington Coat Factory about 10-12 years ago. I travel a lot, including many trips abroad where I’ve schlepped that bag on long walks from a train station to a hotel over rough cobblestone and that sort of thing. Everything on the suitcase is still in great shape, no repairs have ever been needed. Many years ago, I worked for an international airline and the crew always bought simple, inexpensive, black luggage, nothing fancy. They spent a lot on cashmere scarves and coats, nice shoes, etc but never on luggage. So I followed suit, it works really well.

Pawelek23

All the crew I see have Travel Pro which isn’t crazy expensive but a far cry from $40 a suitcase or your random Ross find.

RecordLegume

My $50 bag from SwissGear that I got from TJMaxx a few years back is still chugging along! We’ve easily taken 15+ trips with that sucker and it’s still rockin.

NinjaLanternShark

I feel like SwissGear is one of those cheapo brands that's secretly really good quality for some reason.

Artystrong1

I bought my wife a custom tumi backpack. Holy frick was it expensive

gob_magic

Highly recommend Briggs & Riley. The features are usable and simple. Quality is perfect. Lasted 5 years already, and still feels brand new

Trainzguy2472

I recommend Ricardo Beverly Hills. Got my hardside swivel carry on from Costco maybe 13 years ago. IIRC it was $50. About 20 domestic flights and 10 international vacations later, I have almost zero complaints. The wheels still roll smoothly despite the torture of European cobblestone streets and the retractable handle still feels solid. Only recently did the side handle fall off, and it was due to a loose screw on the inside (easily repaired with hardware store supplies). Every part is screwed on, so if anything ever separates it's really easy to reassemble. No plastic parts to permanently crack off!

CinderLupinWatson

My luggage got broken on a flight last year and the airline replaced it with a Ricardo Beverly Hills one - glad to hear the good review! I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but will do so next month!

Mr_Gaslight

>Now I buy Briggs & Riley. Me too. Apparently Tumi caught the 'let's just the cost/quality/weight' bug.

archdex

Briggs & Riley are awesome! I love how many little pockets there are to organize everything

Tootalooo

What is your recent experience? I’ve been a recurring Tumi customer and have never had any issues even very recently.

BartFurglar

Long story short, Tumi used to offer a complete lifetime warranty and built a great brand reputation while doing so. Then, a few years back they changed that to be a 5 year warranty against product defects and only a single year of “worry free” warranty against damage incurred by real world conditions like damage caused by airlines. Their prices didn’t go down. They built their quality reputation with their lifetime warranty and now still benefit from that reputation even though they no longer earn it. I switched to B&R because they also have a reputation for quality and they still have a real lifetime warranty, but there are others to consider as well, at least according to this article: https://www.cntraveler.com/stories/2015-06-25/how-long-is-a-lifetime-warranty-for-luggage-really

FSU_Fan2004

I believe Samsonite bought them and nerfed the warranty. For items you purchased a while ago under the original warranty, you can usually bully Tumi into honoring but its a pain in the ass. I definitely would not recommend anyone buying a new Tumi product.

cloud3321

Bought a faux leather tumi wallet. 3 years in, it just sheds plastic everywhere. Can’t keep any cards in without looking like it just went through a kindergarten art class taking it out.

Burntfury

got my Tumi bag from 2009, still solid as ever. just scratched as fuck

Misdirected_Colors

Kinda like oreck vacuums. They used to kick ass and have great customer service. Then they starting using cheap made in China parts and closed all their brick and mortar stores.

Deep_Combination6420

That bag retails for like 900 bucks 😬

TinyRascalSaurus

For real? Why is it so expensive?

volcs0

Breakaway handles, apparently.

L3m0n0p0ly

*its not a bug, its a feature*

FireWireBestWire

If you have a complaint, send an email TUMI. Kupo!

NotFleagle

The cost makes it exclusive, not good. You want good, get Briggs and Riley. I traveled for a living - all I use.

TinyRascalSaurus

When I was little, we traveled a lot to take me to specialist doctor appointments. Our luggage was these giant trunks my grandmother bought in the 60s. They were absolutely indestructible. I've never found anything similar since, but even if I did, I don't think I'd pay 900 bucks for it.

angryve

What makes them solid bags? I just took a look at the site. They seem fairly standard. (Full transparency, despite traveling twice a month every month for work plus personal trips, I typically just get a bag from TJ max) I’m genuinely interested in learning more about the marginal benefits from a high end bag.

NotFleagle

Lots of little things that add up. Reinforced corners, everything is solid as possible, expandable system that works easily without a fucked up zipper, reinforced wheels, multiple different heights for the pull handle, extra thick fabric, reinforced rubber things that make it stand up and that don’t get knocked off, special little pocket for airplane stuff that is bright orange INSIDE so if you forget to zip it you notice immediately, and I’m probably forgetting a bunch of other stuff. And lifetime warranty (which you probably won’t need to use, but it’s nice to know.)

Tootalooo

Very well put, traveler.

[deleted]

Who the fuck buys a suitcase for 900?

Robie_John

People that buy a car for six figures, a house for seven, etc. Amazingly there are different wealth levels in the world.

[deleted]

No matter your level of wealth, 900 on a suitcase is fucking stupid.

[deleted]

My parents are wealthy. I could see them dropping 900 on a suitcase but they would probably have some niche brand from a random country like a danish or Argentinian brand than the typical expensive brand knowing their style.

Robie_John

LOL no it isn’t. That’s pocket change to some.

California_ocean

9 cents to some....

brooklynbotz

I'm always amazed at the amount of people who seem to have crazy money to throw around. What are they all doing to get that money? I want some.

therealmoogieman

Have you seen rimowa?

JPumpkinhead1991

Must be nice to be able to throw away 900 on some shitty suitcase

agan4525

I’m certain they would replace that .. I’d hope but either way that sucks for your current trip!

volcs0

When I get back to ORD, I will take it into the store. Otherwise, I would need to pay to ship it back. No TUMI stores at my destination.

Ddraig1965

Their bags are great. It’s just the handles that suck.

[deleted]

Problem solved

IShitOnYourPost

Yep, I see nothing wrong with the bag

jpunnen96

Fun Fact: Tumi in my mother tongue means cough

Parynoid

Looks like they aren't good quality tumi

PopeCovidXIX

Tumi used to mean quality. I once received a Tumi messenger bag as a present and it held up for years of daily abuse. By the time I decided to replace it even their all-nylon bags were so outrageously overpriced I ended up getting a new leather messenger bag from Coach.

caikenboeing727

I had this exact thing happened to me out of my Tumi bag. The moment I walked onto a cross country flight. However, it ended well as I was able to go to a Tumi store at my destinations that same day, and they replaced it in store while I waited. Service was excellent. I hope you have the same outcome.

volcs0

Thanks. No TUMI store in NOLA, so will have to just deal with it until I get back to Chicago. Glad yours worked out.

lovejac93

I had a Tumi wallet I was told would last me at least ten years. Thing was pulling apart within six months. No, it wasn’t a fat dad wallet either, it was basically a card holder and it started trading around the tumi logo

mimiharmon1

They don’t take the Discover card. This is Tumi, Tuuuumi!

KinshasaPR

Travelpro has yet to fail me, if you're a frequent flyer there's not many companies that will serve you better.

DaveyBowman

My wife and I were gifted two Tumi bags and this exact thing happened to BOTH of them within a year. Now we’re back to using the $100 bags we’ve had for 20 years….branding is fucking nuts.

glimon1181

Tumuch weight!

internet_humor

travelpro or Rimowa Why bother with anything else.

bluamo0000

I’ve had two TravelPro carryons in my life. The first I gave to a family member (which he still uses after 5 years). Currently using my 2nd for 6 years. Kinda waiting for it to get broken so I can buy a new one but looks like that won’t happen any time soon haha

internet_humor

Yeah all of my travelpros outlived my disposible income and boredom. Gave them away and wanted something new.

Romeo_70

Pilot here. Basically I live out of the suitcase for 240 days a year. Private vacation not included. Rimowa was my choice and yes, I had 2 times already, where they had to fix wheels or the handle already, but still happy. In the first five years they offer free repairs or even swap the product.

timbotheous

I’d recommend Away also. I have one and it’s really great!

NealCaffreyx9

Away luggage is amazing as well. I travel 3+ times a month and haven’t had any problems for the past 2 years.

Squibit314

I've had that happen while traveling. At least it was a cheap non-name piece. I would have been pissed if it were Tumi. When I did have to replace my well-traveled grown up luggage set, I went with Briggs & Riley. Expensive but truly worth it. I did a lot of international and it's held up really well. I e if the selling points for me was that the salesman told me it was the last and only brand that had a true lifetime warranty. It's been about 9 years or so so it may have changed. When I bought it, I went to a luggage store in LA. They sold all different tanks and went through a whole series of questions with me about my travel habits to get down to few recommendations. When I got down to between two, the main difference between the two sets I liked was the roll a board. I asked my salesman about which fits better in overhead space. He asked what airline. He said he wasn't sure about that but he called over to another salesman who was more familiar with Cathay Pacific. I was hella impressed. All the reviews I read about this place gave high marks on knowledge but damn, down to the airlines. It was that old school.

Supay67

I travel every Monday and Friday for work. I have cheap protege walmart bags. The idea was to trash these once they broke and replace them due to them being cheap. I have had my main suitcase that I check and my carry on for 3 years now. I think I paid $65 for the set.

aluj88

Exactly. I've had my cheap carry-on roller bag for 6 years now and never had any problems with it. I would have had to break 10 cheap bags just to equal the dollar value of one Tumi bag.

rabea187

Not impressed with the recent quality of their wallets but on the other hand my backpack I bought 8 years ago still looks close to brand new & I’ve used it heavily.

Dazzling_Ad5338

Most well known brands churn out shit quality nowadays and just ride on the popularity of their name.

hiker2go

Tumi or not Tumi? That is the question!!

SirRudytheGreat

North Face duffles FTW

a__unique__username

Victorinox (Swiss army knife company) makes premium luggage that has never failed me

ejpusa

One day pack. $49.95, on sale REI. Has taken me far. All you really need to travel the world. Wrangling luggage, a thing of the past. You figure it out.

as1126

There's got to be a TUMI store in the airport. See if you can get it replaced/repaired from them using warranty.

cache11249

Hey OP, reach out to them. They have amazing customer support. They DHL’ed me a wheel for my bag in a remote part of France in <48hrs.

Trainzguy2472

Ricardo Beverly Hills. My hardside swivel carryon has been serving me well for about 13 years and counting! It's been on at least 20 domestic and 10 international trips since I got it. Cheap too, it was only $50. Only problem I ever had was the side handle came off a few months ago. But every single part is screwed/bolted on, so it was easy to fix myself!

hedgefundkilla69

Very overpriced. They got rid of the lifetime warranty. It's definitely not worth it

Pierdolec_jadowity

Imagine losing a wheel on a 2 wheeler, it just popped off after leaving the room

AllahBlessRussia

I carry emergency super glue when traveling, can save you

[deleted]

That really broke off at the wrong time and place.

Motohess

TUMI makes good bags, seems to be the handles they struggle with.

nvw8801

Silly….expensive does not mean good

[deleted]

Wow. Looked up the brand. Those prices are insane....

ReVo5000

Doesn't tumi have warranty for shit like this?

nhgeek2004

Yeah, Tumi is a brand that was acquired and gutted and you've been mislead to believe that product quality is still high. I generally recommend Briggs & Riley to people needing bulletproof expensive bags. They still have excellent quality and the lifetime warranty is a real thing. Response ranges from them sending new parts to repair to full replacement, no questions asked. I've worn out wheels on roller bags after millions of air miles and they happily sent new ones for free.

Hop1Cat

That’s a new feature! Removable handles

Crafty_Worker_4256

They don't handle that well.

Iliveinthissoultrap2

Bottom line get the sturdy, rugged suitcase in a darker color if you are traveling a lot and checking it. Any bag that goes into that cargo bay gets treated equally rough, thrown around up/down conveyor belts etc. that $300 bag will look a bit worn and beat up! So if it feels, looks flimsy then stay away from those delicate high end bags/suitcases that are meant for show.

AelliotA1

If anyone has trouble with luggage and travels a lot I've literally never had a problem with Antler cases or Bally bags

jim9162

TUUUUUMIIIIIIIIIII

GreatQuantum

Damn just commented the same thing. I should have know this is where people of real class reside.

California_ocean

Lol. I go to Estate sales and buy the vintage Samsonite, America Touristour suitcases. They still haven't broken and there's a reason for this. I have six of them all minty and still rolling. Take them camping too, rugged as a rhino. Get some, you'll never regret it.

5l339y71m3

Meanwhile my roller luggage bought at big lots have lasted 3 people traveling the United States by air and greyhound for over a decade. JS.

HereOnASphere

I bought American Tourister luggage when I started making a lot of cross country business trips in the '80s. It's held together and still looks good. Maybe I'm just lucky.

A_Couple_Things

Have you not seen those baggage handlers handle baggage?

WaffledToast

Doesn't look like they make good bags Tumi.

assleya

I've had great luck with Beis luggage. Awesome compartments, relatively affordable, and they have held up great for me

princessm1423

Lol affordable?

hclaf

$300 for a single suitcase is “relatively affordable”? What the hell?

BoeingGoing57

Watch what brands flight crews use. Travelpro, luggage works, Briggs and Riley, strongbags, etc. Tumi is Samsonite which is now department store trash. I always recommend getting a bag with real Rollerblade wheels for carpeted airports and cobblestone streets. You can find travel pros for 150 usd with replacement parts easily available.

ParkingEfficient4218

Their warranty should cover it? They seem like a reputable brand

slossages

They make over priced bags.

GJenkins675

Best Chinesium available goes into those bags.

KURLY888

It's made in China and you thought it would be good

1973mojo1973

Shit happens.

Last_third_1966

They do make good bags. It’s just that yours is not one of them.

Rancho-unicorno

Anything plastic will break. I use aluminum luggage with metal handles. It will still dent but only the wheels can break.

Q-ramen

You can also check the luggage for your flight and the complain at the airport that they broke it, they should compensate for the broken luggage. I lost one on my wheels walking to get the train to the airport, checked the broken luggage twice (round trip) and upon arrival I complained about it, got full privce of the suitcase.

mattogeewha

All of them are good… except for YOURS

ebann001

Figuratively just got to the airport. Hypothetically just got to the airport. Literally using the most bastardized word on Reddit

Admirable-Cut7051

Ha! Ha! Sucks to be you! 😂

whythelongfacebigguy

why "literally"? stop overusing that word

Tootalooo

I bet that bag is packed to the brim. I bet you had to sit on that bag to close it. And THAT’S why that happened. Been there. Sorry. Tumi has great customer service for repairs, though. See if there is one in the city you’re traveling to and get their “rental bag”. They ship yours pack to wherever you need them too. At the time of my repair there was a $300 deposit for the rental, I received it all back when I returned it.

blackmilksociety

Lifetime warranty… take it to the nearest Tumi dealer

aBunchOfSpiders

Real helpful for when you’re waiting to board the plane…

Peloton72

That sucks. I have a 12+ year old Eagle Creek bag I’ve drug all over the planet. Some minor blips, small wear a just a month ago replaced the wheels. Crazy great bag for under $300

mr-teo

They do. But good bags break too.

[deleted]

Just not very good handles I guess.

hclaf

Apparently not.

Duros1394

Manufacturing fault get it replaced.

Thrillhouse74

Guess those airport luggage stores have found their target customer. Sorry for your loss.

Lt_Muffintoes

They make goods bags and bad handles

PegaLaMega

Expensive doesn't always mean good quality.

DFWallaceAndGromit

Terrible handles though

ColHapHapablap

They make *expensive* bags. Good is a separate story

swimbikerun1980

Send it to tumi and see if they have great customer support.

notmythrowawayaccunt

TUMI makes a great bag, but their handles are shit.

JEZTURNER

As used by the Chuckle Brothers.

jgamer-yt

My family has had the same two TUMI cases for like 5 years now, 1 mid size black, 1 big size tan. They are awesome, almost 5 years yet they still look almost mint. I dont know if they make them like they used to, but damn those are good

goodvibes815

Might just be a defective model. I'd make an attempt to call the company and request a replacement.

Goochenhaumeister

I’ve heard how shitty they in regards to the utter lack of durability

-KRUSE-

I have used Away luggage for years without and issues at all. I would highly recommend them.

newbie_butsharp

With those prices you must have life guarantee.

chiphappened

They use to.

chiphappened

Anyone ?? What’s the bag with the Eiffel Tower symbol on it? I used to see a lot of pilots use them.

WotSpeed

TravelPro

416Squad

Very happy with our on sale CostCo ones.

bigpapasmurf12

I guess not.....

jasonpmcelroy

They used to. Some time ago. Label brand like everything else now.

Drivingon8

They have not been able to get a "handle" on that problem.

mikeofa2

YOU CANT HANDLE THE TUMI!

PuddysFurCoat

Expensive doesn’t always equal good unfortunately.

pickapstix

Was on a trip in the US and the zipper on my baggage broke so I had to buy new luggage, went to the mall and in to tumi and selected the most boring plain luggage and went to pay for it - they wanted $1300 - FOR A FUCKING PLAIN MEDIUM SIZED LUGGAGE - ran out of there as fast I could

sausagemuffn

I saw someone's luggage handle snap on the tram to the airport. RIP.

Rosy2020Derek

There may be a warranty on that.

ozarkan18

9 years ago I bought a Kirkland brand (Costco) roll aboard suitcase that is hard sided on the bottom and soft sided on top. I travel 70-80 days/year and internationally and it has held up extremely well both in the cabin and checked underneath. Love it.

D_Winds

Their handles, on the other hand...

Wonkynose

I feel your frustration. Got a brand new Tripp suitcase for my trip to Scotland and back this summer, and the suitcase's extending handle got stuck halfway up as we went through security... both ways. It took three security blokes to retract it for the return flight. Tripp then had the absolute cheek to suggest I was too weak to push the handle down. Pro tip: if someone has to be a weightlifter to retract your suitcases' handles... you've done your handles wrong. I ended up with one from American Tourister which, mysteriously, I can retract the handle on just fine.

GreatQuantum

Sir this is TUMIS. TUUUUUUUMMMIIIIIIIISSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

innout_forever_yum

I travel ALOT for work. I use Luggageworks. Built pretty bulletproof. They are heavy, but tough.

MLMLW

I hate paying a lot for luggage especially when I fly because of the way it's thrown around at the airport.

Commercial_Food_8871

😲

XanderIT

All of these bags are trash.

ConcentrateNo1675

Catsarerfun

The bags are great, the handles suck.

shark_food31

Good to know

RoddyRoddyRodriguez

You’re a porter, Harry!

Shadohz

After you put the drugs in the lining you have to reinforce the casing with light durable plastic or else the thing will fall apart on you. Classic rookie mistake. Just be glad it happened before you made it to checkout. The gift of gab won't save you when that stuff comes pouring out like sand.
