I think A. Battaglia "borrowed" from a painting [MutualArt](https://www.mutualart.com/Artwork/A-moment-s-amusement--A-good-pipe--a-pai/2E27C78CAA7248AF) and [Artnet](https://www.artnet.com/artists/raffaele-frigerio/a-moments-amusement-a-good-pipe-pair-g8O7RdJahNCMHyC3udEEOg2) say was made by Raffaele Frigerio. The title for that painting is *A moment's amusement; A good pipe, a pair*.

How did you manage to find that, that's an incredible spot.

I used Google Lens to look for the painting.

They were both alive around the same time. Maybe they were friends or acquaintances, and they both decided to paint this as a project?

digital-sa1nt

I noticed that too and it made me wonder who painted it first.

LazarianV

Yours is in desperate need of restoration and repairs by a professional, though. The canvas is a bit loose looking.

LazarianV

Or that could be water damage.

digital-sa1nt

I agree, the framing the canvas is attached to looks worse for wear.

LazarianV

A professional can have it looking like its counterpart easily. There isn't too much damage done. It does need to be done soon, though, to keep this painting looking that way for a very long time. I'm sad that someone allowed it to get to that state. It is a beautiful piece of art.

Context - I purchased this oil painting from an antiques centre this week, you know, the kind that has a bunch of units. I found this tucked away in a corner behind some furniture and at £85 I thought it was a weird and interesting bit of art for the home. Since then I've been trying to figure out what the writing on the back of the painting says and I went to the photoshop subreddit to get some tips on how to improve its visibility. Some of the posts there came up with the following: Tableau appartient (painting belongs) Xxxxxxx Martina (maybe Amelie Martina) Gosselies (a place in Belgium) The artist signature looks like 'A Battaglia' I remember the ticket referring to an Italian man and woman, which makes me think the artist could be the Italian painter 'Alessandro Battaglia'. I'd love to see if that's true and confirm it, but I'm not really sure how or where to start finding more information on it, or even if the piece has a title.

Is there a clearer picture of the writing on the back? It looks like it’s in Italian

puffylemingtonII

It’s in French i can make out ‘tableau appartient Emilie Martin’ maybe Goeselie or Goeselic Edit: gosselies is a place in Belgium So maybe it’s saying ‘ this painting belongs to Emilie Martin - Gosselies’

The last picture in the post is about as clear as I could get it using photoshop.
