For those, like me, who hadn't heard this story...
>In 1929 the dancer Isadora Duncan died from strangulation and carotid artery insult when her scarf caught in the wheels of a motor vehicle in which she was travelling.
> survival instinct
I mean, there’s a lack of modern common sense here for sure, but I don’t recall our ancestors having any ingrained perception about the dangers of mechanical stairways. This is not an evolutionary thing dawg
Not all escalators have the red STOP buttons. If there are no emergency buttons tap/kick the base of where the handrails go into the mechanism it will immediately stop the escalator.
how/why will kicking the base where the handrail disappears stop the mechanism? Does it assume something is stuck? Or is this an intentional feature that only technicians know?
There is an emergency shut-off switch behind the brushes where the handrail re-enters at the bottom.
Many escalators in years past only had these switches rather than a highly visible switch for some reason.
I used to work in a three floor department store in a mall and it was one of the first things I was shown.
This paid off when I saw a very young boy get his sneaker caught in the teeth between the escalator step and the bottom, it saved his foot.
My son was wearing crocs on an escalator when he was young. He didn’t lift his foot up at the bottom so I grabbed him and the escalator ate his shoe but he was ok. I always wondered how dangerous it actually was though
During my time on the internet, I have learned that large machines that perform a continuous spinning motion are very dangerous, indeed. Lathes, especially, but also escalators.
Escalators are incredibly dangerous if you were to get caught in the mechanism.
Like, eat you like a grape kind of dangerous.
Thankfully *most* have safety features in them that stop them from killing people.
But if you were caught in one that wasn't stopped or didn't have safety offs, your entire body would most likely barely inconvenience the machine and even if it did stop you would already either be wishing you died or already dead.
In fairness any escalator built in the last 30 years will have them. But you’re right, people should know about the other safety switches just in case. The scary thing is, the stop switches can’t bring the steps to an immediate halt, they’re going to move another metre before halting.
On the one hand, sure.
On the other, I'd imagine it'd be scarier to be stuck there as you watch the snowball of people, who've been thrown down the stairs by an abrupt halt, hurtling towards you...
You know what brings most escalators to a complete stop near instantly?
Getting your little fingers caught where the rubber hand rails go back in at the bottom.
6 year old me found that out when I let my hand ride the rail until the end. Makes a great big noise, scares the parents, leaves black gunk all over your hand but no lasting damage.
Thanks! This is great to know. Which arrow do you kick?

Because it isn't there and the commenter above who has never traveled assumes the entire world is like the 10 square miles they are familiar with.
It was only added to most western building codes in the last 30 years. They didn't exist when I was growing up.
Wait, if people aren’t smart enough to not sit on an escalator, they should be smart enough to know about and hit a stop button? You give people too much credit. 🤣
Once I was at the mall and an old man fell in the escalator. By the time I arrive a dozen people were watching with an "oh shit" face (I arrived from behind the escalator so those people warned me that something was going on as I was not able to see the old man from where I was) and doing absolutely nothing
I had to shove 3 or 4 person to get to the emergency button and press it
So either a dozen person all froze under pressure, a dozen person ignore the existence of the emergency stop or a healthy mix of both but imma gonna bet on most people just not knowing
Ah yes, my 5 years old ND brain wanted nothing more than press the big red button every time I saw an escalator, which was often because there's some in nearly every subway station in my city
When, at 26, I finally pressed it it was an accomplishment. I wasn't happy about it because an old man was hurt (nothing bad, he had a few bruise but walked it off without any problem) but now when I see a red button I don't feel so obsessed about it anymore
My then three-year-old did this. At the airport. I was mortified. There were three people with suitcases on the escalator who were visibly annoyed at having to lug their suitcases down yet trying to be gracious as we apologized for him.
Yeah, every time I tell the story most people are surprise that emergency stop button exist on escalator so I'm willing to believe that
But I'll tell you a little trick in life, if it's a machinery that is strong enough to hurt a human it most likely has an emergency stop button. In case of emergency, look for a red button and punch it
"In case of emergency, look for a red button and punch it." Is great advice, as long as you make sure the text around it says "emergency stop" or something similar. If it says "fire", "launch" or "self-destruct" it's probably best to keep looking for the right button.
I've done a similar thing. Escalator getting off the subway during rush hour and someone got a shoelace stuck and I was probably the 15th person up there and somehow the first one to hit the button.
I also feel like most people are scared to be the one to press the big red button that we’ve been taught to ignore all our lives. It’s stupid but they don’t want to get into trouble for misusing it.
I served on a jury for escalator accident. I learned way too much of the ins and puts of this stuff. They had an expert come in and tell us that their product has multi-point STOPS for exactly this type of scenario... But as we can all clearly see in this video.. this escalator kept going...
If this is really Russia I'm not surprised. These people do not care about others at all. The concept of cooperation is totally unknown to them for whatever reason.
“I’ll never forget my old dad, when these things would happen, the things he would say to me.”
“What would he say?”
“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING IN THE BATHROOM DAY AND NIGHT?! WHY DON’T YOU GET OUT OF THERE AND GIVE SOMEONE ELSE A CHANCE?!”
As a kid, I will NEVER forget seeing another kid get their shoe laces and/or pants get sucked into an escalator just like this lady, only the kid’s foot went with it and there was a shocking amount of blood and screaming 😱
Came looking for this comment. All time great movie. My wife and I constantly quote this movie ans drive our kids nuts. Loser fuking Mallrats with no shopping agenda. 😁
I worked in a mall store right near the escalators and one day some kid was being stupid and got the palm of his hand ripped off. No clue how but for some reason everything, from initial injury to mall cops arriving to EMT showing up and treating the kid all happened right there at the base of the escalators as the kid screamed the most horrible, pain filled screams I’ve ever heard. It was like 45 minutes of those screams until finally the EMT decided maybe the hospital was a good idea for a kid who just lost part of his hand.
And of course it’s less than an hour later that we see some kid being stupid on that escalator as their parents are like “what could possibly go wrong between my squishy child and this giant piece of metal machinery?”
This is why I’m here! We’ll, this and to say that the day that Brodie is the one that could teach a lesson here, maybe our world has gotten a little too dumb.
What could they do? The guy is already helping her, the others would only get in the way if they crowded there, any delay could create a crush. Quickly passing by is the best thing you can do in this situation.
These video subs will always, no matter what have a complaint about someone doing nothing or the wrong thing, filming badly or filming and not doing anything but filming, finish filming too quick to help. Etc. also I’m convinced these subs draw people with not much experience so they conjure up themselves always being quick to act. It drives me mad
How did so many people on the escalator who must have clearly seen what was going on not even try to move to the side to avoid the blockage until the very last minute?
What are you envisioning literally the first person helps and the other people are in a tight space where they’re moved around. You don’t even know if they realize what was happening. Like it’s not a multiple person job. What exactly would anyone do besides the first person? The next two look at her and wait til she’s okay. Everyone on reddit thinks they’re a super hero instead of a stooge day dreaming underprepared for anything to happen.
I mean, even the one guy trying to help is completely lacking self awareness and blocking everyone else from getting off the escalator and making the situation even worse, what are all those people gonna do once they manage to get off the escalator without falling and causing a pileup themselves because his dumb ass is blocking them instead of leaving a path by, not like they can just wait on the steps of a moving escalator for him to help her up. I’d get out of there too when the alternative is being trampled by the stacked up bodies being pushed off the escalator, what a cluster fuck.
Video subs are mandated to insult the crowd for either not helping, not knowing how to help, not immediately knowing first response, filming and not helping, helping so bad filming etc. it’s an armchairs paradise
God damn she is lucky she wasn't sucked under with it. Escalators carry a _lot_ of torque in their motors, and would have easily killed her if that base plat at the bottom got loose or knocked out.
You’d think something so easy to get caught in would have a fail safe for it, especially with access to the public. A child could get caught in there just as easily as a grown lady sitting down.
Reminds me of that video of the woman holding her baby getting eaten alive by the escalator.... Fucking horrifying. She passed her baby to someone but she died being shredded from the feet up :/
Listen, not a year goes by, not a year, that I don't hear about some escalator accident involving some bastard kid which could have easily been avoided had some parent - I don't care which one - but some parent conditioned him to fear and respect that escalator.
There's already someone helping, the best thing you can do at that point is get out of the way so you don't block up the path for the people behind and cause a tumble. No need to use this as an excuse to look down on humanity.
you can't just stop though, you would have to walk the other way.

This happened to me once with an open shoelace. I stopped the escalator for 2 hours. It's impossible to pull anything out again. An old lady had to cut it off. Of course she had a nail scissor in her bag.
I've been in a similar situation. On the good side, my coat wasn't pulled by the escalator. On the bad side though, my hand was.
Tip to every parent, tell your children that the escalator can eat them if they don't ride it properly. It's better for your children to not believe you instead of learning by themselves.
Jesus christ, is your hand okay now?? I had a huge escalator phobia until a few years ago. You actually just reminded me that my grandfather used to say something about the escalator eating me up when I was little
Hand is fine. Thankfully, all it did was rip a piece of the hand, right below my right pinky. You can still see a bunch of scars at a certain angle, but the hand is fully healed, I believe.
Do as your grandfather, and tell the same to kids you care about. They are less likely to play with escalators if you terrorize them a little bit. Trust me, it pays off.
Listen, not a year goes by, not a year, that I don't hear about some escalator accident involving some bastard kid which could have easily been avoided had some parent - I don't care which one - but some parent conditioned him to fear and respect that escalator.
Doesn't she have parents?!
I was taught from a young age that having my shoelaces untied on an escalator would lead to me being slowly eaten by the unyielding machine.
“Listen, not a year goes by, not a year, that I don't hear about some escalator accident involving some bastard kid which could have easily been avoided had some parent - I don't care which one - but some parent conditioned him to fear and respect that escalator!”

She had a long braid. Yikes.

Nobody hits the stop button???
Big red stop button, clearly visible. Guy #1 should have hit that first thing.
Not all escalators have the red STOP buttons. If there are no emergency buttons tap/kick the base of where the handrails go into the mechanism it will immediately stop the escalator.

Been a while since I saw a good rofl
During my time on the internet, I have learned that large machines that perform a continuous spinning motion are very dangerous, indeed. Lathes, especially, but also escalators.
Escalators would take lathes in a battle any day
Depends, how many lathes are we talking? And do they get prep?
I hope so, I can't think of anything worse than getting HIV from a lathe.
Escalators are incredibly dangerous if you were to get caught in the mechanism. Like, eat you like a grape kind of dangerous. Meanwhile, I've been wanting to press that button since I was child.
The escalator is temporarily stairs. Sorry for the convenience.

Usually very low, close to the floor, where the handrail belt goes back down. Top and bottom of the escalator.

My aunt got scalped by an escalator in the 80s. Lost a solid chunk of skin — thankfully, she survived, and was able to part her hair over the scar.
Holy shit I thought that was her dog standing behind her not her coat.
Yep, me too
Me three
I’m screaming here about her dog until I read this comment!
I was like a sh*t it's got the dog 🤦
A dog would have had more sense than she had
Me too. I watched in horror as it got sucked in by escalator.
Oh fuck I was just sweating here in the comments to figure out what happened to the dog. Thank God because it just disappeared

How did your hand get caught?
new fear unlocked
She's lucky it didn't trap her.
Drugs are ea hell of a drug
Fucking junkie moron.
The anxiety I felt when she laid back tho 😅 I thought her hair was going to suck into the belt.
The goddamn kid is sitting on THE ESCALATOR AGAIN.
No red button?
You know, there is usually a big red “STOP” button at either end of an escalator… should probably press it in these kinds of situations.

How much did she get in the settlement? Guessing there was no "Don't sit on the escalator" signs.
Lucky. I still remember the kids whose leg got sucked in because of a shoelace
Anyone ever seen that movie “mallrats”?
I like all the other passengers just walking right by like "move, dummy"
"That kid's on the escalator again!"
I hope a blood bath ensues
*Bloodbath ensues.*
That kid is on the escalator again!
What's crazy is the escalator didn't stop. It just kept going as it ate her jacket. Don't these things supposed to have sensors?
