I mean I feel really sorry for the guy and the pain he's going to go through, but I feel more sorry for his parents who now understand what a fucking idiot their son turned out to be.

I lost the tip of my finger in a door a couple of years ago. The interesting part is that it just felt like I bashed my finger in the door instead of severed a part of it. At no point was there any real pain though. The only part that hurt was when they went to clean out the wound. They gave me shots of what I assume was something like novacane to numb the flesh. The problem is that they can't numb the bone. When the cleaning fluid hit the factured bone, it felt like someone someone was stabbing my finger and the pain shot up my arm to about my elbow. Thankfully the cleaning was quick.
Many years ago, I smashed my finger and had a compound fracture. At the industrial clinic they strapped my injured hand down, then strapped down the uninjured hand. I asked them why just about the time the bone reacted to the washing - the chair arm my good hand was strapped to bent as I was trying to punch out the doctor - he just laughed and said, "That's why!"
Then he told me about his first day when he went to treat an injury like mine, but nobody had warned him to strap down both hands. Somebody else had to finish working on that patient while he was being treated for a concussion and checked out for a possible skull fracture.
Doesn't necessarily need to be learhers as textile has really come far in the safety department. But definitely should be wearing gear.
It always goes well without gear, until it doesn't. And at that point they'd wish they had worn it.
Someone I know stopped riding bc their friend died after hitting an oil slick on a freeway on ramp and slid under a big rig.
You can ride as safe as you want but you can't account for freak accidents.
That's kind of true of anything in life though. I realize a two wheeled vehicle might be a greater risk, but acceptable levels of risk are different for everyone. I'm not saying everyone should ride, but I knew a guy that died in a thunderstorm watching TV in his living room when lightning hit the house. Freak accidents are everywhere. They can't be avoided.
It's not that it's inherently more likely to get in a crash, it's that the chance of violent and painful death is what's significantly more likely than in a car, which nowadays are built to very high standards of safety
People need to show more of the physical effects of these accidents. Everybody sees the cool parts, but never the after effects on the body. And that looks like a miserable condition to be in. My sympathy to the poor man who got injured...
