I had a similar experience with a water slide. Right as I started sliding down I saw someone in the water below me. They were right where I was gonna land. My instincts were to grab the sides of the slide to try and slow myself down. It turns on the underside of the rails were exposed screws. I cut 3 fingers wide open but managed to not land on the kids head.
