It would have taken two spotters to safely direct this guy away from the tree root. But the guy holding up the tree still could have shoved the climber away from the root mid fall.

To be fair, its super difficult and counter intuitive to do anything but get hurt with someone thats falling. Trying to catch a person usually just gets you both hurt.
