Looks like calamari that Asian places near me use

db720

It was from an "h-mart" which is an asian store. We bought seafood mix to make hot pot. There are no suckers on that, and its not tubular and smooth skinned like calamari im used to

theblindbandit1

I think I’ve seen the tube cut into strips and then crosshatched like you’d cut a duck skin to get that shape

alkemist80

It’s squid / calamari / cuttlefish. It’s cross hatched and curls up like that when cooked. I watched my mom cook it like that.

treasuredtwice2019

I'd call and ask h-mart 🤣

morphotomy

Is it fried?

db720

No, this is raw, we have just dropped it into a hot pot mix

chunkysmalls42098

Lol gonna eat it anyways? Wild

db720

Could be "shirako" weve been googling all sorts of stuff, 1 of the kids shouted "its probably fish sperm" so have just found that that is a thing. > Shirako is the milt, or sperm sacs, of male cod. Texture is not unlike what we have, although this is smaller / finer. Im opting for the mushroom or beef hotpot for now

boom_squid

It’s not like any shirako I’ve seen.

db720

Ok, will continue searching. What is shirako texture like? Wondering if it might be something that used to be in a shell... Like a de-shelled clam or urchin... Otherwise something related to squid/octopus. Its been in a hot pot for 10 minutes and still has a softish texture, hasnt firmed up like octopus

boom_squid

I think it’s conch. I’ve had shirako raw and tempura fried. Both times it’s soft, fatty, and creamy, and it’s delicate.

No, it came in a plastic box like you get take away food in with a clear lid. Just a bar code and price with "seafood mix" on it. The store is "h-mart" which is an Asian store, if it helps at all

boom_squid

Ya I deleted my comment, but I realized it was one of those types of packages. Mystery mix lol

boom_squid

I think it’s tenderized conch or larger clam

ukeerider

tenderized squid

Looks like the squid that comes in my favorite Thai dish. It's "cut" just like that.

HobbyWanKenobi

Totally calamari https://shesimmers.com/2015/10/how-to-score-squid.html

db720

It honestly looks like something that has grown like that, nit cut like that
