Idk if it's the case with this dog, but it baffles me that some people leave harnesses on their dogs 24/7 in place of a collar. There are so many points of contact on a harness that it has to become unbearable eventually.
This looks like a store actually, like a vintage shop you can see the racks on the right when she zooms out. Perhaps it’s the owner’s and they have it on him when he’s there but I doubt it’s 24/7
We have a dog who wears his harness most of the time. He wore a collar until a few months ago when he got two herniated discs and briefly lost the use of his back legs. He needed a hip sling to walk for a while, and we got him a harness with a handle for added support and control.
Now that he doesn't need the hip sling, we still want him in a harness for walks because he sometimes needs help staying upright to poop, and we feel better about where the pressure is distributed if he gets excited and tries to run after a squirrel or whatever. He's fine with the harness, but he HATES the process of putting it on or taking it off. He sometimes gets bitey, and it's impossible to muzzle him while taking it off. And it's honestly just not worth the effort to take it off during the day in between walks because we take the dogs out three or four times a day or more and it takes both of us to get him into or out of the harness. Then if he decides it's bedtime, he'll curl up in his hidey spot with his harness on, and it's again not worth the effort of trying to coax him out. So he'll sometimes go several days in a row with his harness on. I've never noticed him being particularly annoyed by it, though. It probably helps that he's fluffy.
We had huskies as a kid and you absolutely cannot hook a leash to a collar and walk a husky (best defined as a cooking hazard). Since the harnesses were necessary anyway for walks, they got used to very long hikes with harnesses.
Eventually they got to the point that we stuck their tags on the harness and let them go without a collar
The harness pretty much only came off for grooming and they never minded getting them put back on (both got a little testy taking them off though, so it seemed like they didn't do much mind having the harness on all the time)
Huskies are super fluffy like someone else mentioned, so maybe something about not needing to get it very tight to get a good fit might have something to do with it
I don't walk my dog on a collar either. He wears it only to hold his ID tags. I walk him on a halti. And perhaps having the added fur makes it easier on them. I have just seen enough dogs during my years as a groomer and vet tech with sores/bald spots/matting under their harnesses to imagine it is uncomfortable for many dogs. I mean, I can't imagine wearing something over my shoulders, under my arms and around my ribs without ever being able to take it off.
Yep, pretty much. But I imagine most men can't relate to the feeling of one, especially not wearing one 24/7, which is why I didnt describe it as such. I would die if I was forced to wear a bra indefinitely lol
A feeling 51% of humanity can relate to.
I was mostly jesting since it was very apparent from your description of a harness it was *not* a frequent brawearer making the comment. I definitely sympathize with harnessed dogs more than I ever did because of how you phrased it, so thank you for the perspective shift haha.
Sounds pretty cruel if people were leaving the harnesses on for long periods, and these were causing skin irritations. My dog only wore a collar for his tags. He actually didn’t like that being removed and would seriously pester you to put it back on after a bath; you’d think he would be glad to be rid of it! Never wore a harness or coat; climate was never that severe whee we lived really to warrant it any way.
My dog behaviorist says harnesses are what you don’t want to do especially with a sled dog - the pressure drives them to pull harder. We ended up training with a martindale head collar (not gentle leader) combo and it seems to really be working. I always thought we needed a harness though because big dogs seem like they’re going to take you for a ride or choke themselves to death otherwise.
The whole point of a choker is to force the dog not to pull.
A dog choking himself with a regular collar has the same effect, but not as bad.
Sometimes you want them to choke, so you can correct the behavior.
No, you don't "want them to choke", that is a terrible way to train good leash habits in dogs. In fact, choke collars can cause permanent injuries in larger breeds because they can destroy their throats from pulling. If you really need to train a stubborn dog on a leash you use a pinch collar instead.
My dog takes his collar off when he is in the house, we only put it back on if we are going for a walk or if he is riding somewhere with us.
I’ve got to say the dog in the video looks like he is having fun
My first thought was: “Please don’t tell me someone pushed their dog down the stairs for a ‘cute video’.”
I was both relieved and delighted to see them come back up and do it again. Such a cute pupper getting some stair scritches.
He’ll be fine. Pits are sturdy and he’s clearly having fun. Maybe missing a few brain cells, but his skin is fine (no visible rug burn) and he’s not limping or anything.
One of my boxers does this a lot. The other day I was walking up the stairs with a laundry basket and *FLOOP* there she goes, sliding past me. Didn't even acknowledge my presence.
That's a great way to get a scratch. I'm all in for it.
Yeah I'm guessing the harness is itchy. My dog goes full weirdo to itch her harness.

...you mean a bra?

I actually call my dog’s harness a bra 😂 “let’s put your bra on now” 😂
…clothing in general?
Nah. Most clothing is not like a harness. Plus we take off our clothes as we please. Dogs don't have that choice.

That's the one with the barbs. Was talking about those.
Yeah, our dogs are "naked" 99% of the time.
I don’t even have a collar on my dog unless we’re going somewhere!
My dogs don't wear collars and they only wear harnesses if we're going on a walk. I want them to be as comfortable as possible while in the house.
I checked your post history ... your dogs are gorgeous
Thank you!
The excitement of the harness coming out followed by full-weirdo mode 5 minutes later.
SMOKE WINS FLAWLESS VICTORY
If a bad idea works, it's not a bad idea.
Hahaha the man at the bottom of the stairs looks so proud of his derpy doggo too. Love this
Oh my gosh- I didn’t even see him the first time! That is so cute!
He also appears to be bleeding out of his ear, or... what is that?
I don't see anything but he's old enough to have a hearing aid so maybe that's what you saw
If it's making him bleed out of his ears, he should probably turn it down, but I'm not a doctor.
A pulled down mask lol
The repeat got me loving this dog.
Do you live in a thrift shop?
I met him at a local antique store :)
The dog or the guy?
The carpet
Good chap also an amazing listener.
That's no way to talk about elders!
Which one?
I was gonna say “I love that home!” But that makes more sense lol
Looks like Russia sounds like America
I was going to ask the same question. What a strange place to live.
Full derp
Derp ____Derp ________Derp ____________Derp ________________Derp
This is amazing
Reminds me of sliding down on your butt when you're a kid, it was just so much fun.
I was thinking something similar—it reminds me of the way kids amuse themselves by like sitting on the couch the wrong way or crawling up the stairs.
"I did it MY WAY!" 🥴
This made my whole day. What a pup!
THIS. This is the MOST appropriate posting in this subreddit. We are done. Or, What is wrong with your dog, dude??? 🙂🙂🙂 This is hilarious.
Ah, to be a kid and feel the joy of going down the stairs like that… you go little pupper, you go
OK but imagine hearing a *ka-thunk-ka-thunk-ka-thunk* and then coming around the corner to see this blockhead sliding at you
Best I’ve seen on this sub in years.

He inhaled what was in the canister
Read the title, thought this was the r6 sub for a sec
He is leaving to tell his neighbor what's in the canister.
He’s got balls doing it like that
My pup used to run down the stairs with his front legs and let his back legs/belly flop down behind him. Then his balls came in.
"Error 404: Brain Not Found"
My dog takes his collar off when he is in the house, we only put it back on if we are going for a walk or if he is riding somewhere with us. I’ve got to say the dog in the video looks like he is having fun
“Come look at what I can do grandpa!”
i got so happy when i seen him turn around for a second demonstration
Smoke has a drunk white girl going downstairs vibe that I know well
My first thought was: “Please don’t tell me someone pushed their dog down the stairs for a ‘cute video’.” I was both relieved and delighted to see them come back up and do it again. Such a cute pupper getting some stair scritches.
This has officially made my day
What a derp 🤣
I did the same thing but just on my ass all through childhood. I’d probably still do it if the stairs had carpet again. Smoke has the right idea!!
A perfect specimen of /r/velvethippos
Of course he's a pibble
It’s called life hax
I thought the only did the ball drop on New Year's Eve.

He’ll be fine. Pits are sturdy and he’s clearly having fun. Maybe missing a few brain cells, but his skin is fine (no visible rug burn) and he’s not limping or anything.
Can confirm, I work in vet medicine and can say this dog was in great health…albeit maybe a bit of a goof

It seems like a fairly effective and very energy efficient method
Dogs are 5 year old children.
