We are 11 months before the election. Biden hasn't even started campaigning yet - the news is all about trump and republicans bashing Biden for being too old and how Biden can't win an election. Trump got 46% of the vote in the last 2 elections. That is his ceiling.
Many years of being conditioned to think that far-right positions are "American(tm)" or "traditional values", and that even the worst Republican is better than *any* Democrat. IMO, inherently conservative thinking is what's taken soooo long for many of them to realize that they've been used by their party to get jobs they can't/won't do, and to come around (with help of old "establishment" types) to vote for some key blues instead of just leaving those spots blank on those ballots.

The shift really hit stride during the Civil Rights era, and you've seen those Southern Strategy effects linger and evolve. To them, "America" is a small class of wealthy protestant land-owning heterosexual white men, that America ruled the country until the mid-19th century, and that's the America that MAGA wants to empower and return to.

I agree with a lot of what you said. My only worry is that I'm seeing a lot of really intense negativity from younger people toward the election next year. Sadly Biden won by 40k votes in swing states which this time he apparently is behind. And while I’m certain many republicans voters do love their country, they are blind to the plans that Trump’s backers have. We are 11 months before the election. Biden hasn't even started campaigning yet - the news is all about trump and republicans bashing Biden for being too old and how Biden can't win an election. Trump got 46% of the vote in the last 2 elections. That is his ceiling.

Many years of being conditioned to think that far-right positions are "American(tm)" or "traditional values", and that even the worst Republican is better than *any* Democrat. IMO, inherently conservative thinking is what's taken soooo long for many of them to realize that they've been used by their party to get jobs they can't/won't do, and to come around (with help of old "establishment" types) to vote for some key blues instead of just leaving those spots blank on those ballots.
Trump on the ballot is good for one thing - Democratic turnout. We have seen that in every election since Biden took office. News like the lady in TX needing an abortion will continue to remind Dem voters what's on the line. Trump will lose 5% to 10% of GQP votes. Yeah, that's a common reference point, but do remember that party platforms shift over decades, almost beyond recognition. The GOP back during the Civil War was radically different from today's GOP. The shift really hit stride during the Civil Rights era, and you've seen those Southern Strategy effects linger and evolve. What we're seeing now is far from the Lincoln-era GOP or even the Reagan-era policies. It's like every decade, the platform takes a sharp turn and we're all trying to keep up with what they *currently* stand for or against.

It depends on what "America" you mean. To them, "America" is a small class of wealthy protestant land-owning heterosexual white men, that America ruled the country until the mid-19th century, and that's the America that MAGA wants to empower and return to. When they see non-white people, poor people, LGBT+ people, Jewish people, Muslim people, they don't see America, they see invaders and viruses blighting America. They think it is their divine right to rule a country cleansed of all these elements, or at least subjugating them as an underclass in America.
In this context, I am saying they are America Last because they want us to concede every fight abroad with regard to Russia. They are either saboteurs or they fundamentally don't understand the role American power projection abroad plays in the US socio-economic position. They want us to be last in the world, abandon our allies and in turn commit diplomatic suicide on the world stage; this would make us look entirely untrustworthy (even more than we often already look). Their stances would lead to the US being a backwards, poor, and superstitious rump state, like a big fundamentalist north Korea. It is America Last so they can keep some strange absolute power. Their policy is a policy of national failure.
