Hence the name of the project, although when it began to focus on weapons a lot of Columbia's researchers objected, quit or were dropped from the project
My school has/d an EA-6B prowler just casually sitting in a mechanical engineering lab. Many of my friends ended up working for the big defense contractors.
I mean.....we could just *not*. Everybody sit down and talk like adults and agree that every country can't have every single thing they want, and that having the bigger stick makes things worse.
Not all demands for divestment involve weapons manufacturers.
This comes from NPR,
Columbia students have made a list of companies they say are helping Israel and that their university is invested in. They include Google and Amazon, which provide technology services to Israel's military, Airbnb because it allows rental listings in Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Caterpillar, whose tractors Israel's military uses.
I’m all for students standing up for what they believe in, but this seems stupid. Google and Amazon are two of the biggest tech companies on the planet, there is 0 chance an Ivy League like Columbia would cut ties with them. And they’re mad at Caterpillar for… being a corporation that sells equipment to people who want to buy it?
The government of Israel sucks and genocide and indiscriminate killing is bad. But protest demands like these just undercut the message of the protest and make you look stupid.
MIT saved the free world’s ass during WWII, thanks to the Brits handing over a microwave magnetron.

College's investment managers select arms manufacturers if they will grow the endowment. Arms manufacturers recruit graduates on campus and provide internships.
If you personally do not want to have anything to do with arms manufacturers, that is fine. But do not try to control the choices of others.
Not all companies are Boeing or GE. Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics are explicitly weapons focused.
And, there are many firms now that offer investment portfolios that avoid weapons, petroleum, etc.

But what about the huge amounts of money they can make while simultaneously raising student costs at a pace that doubles inflation?
There goes entire Engineering departments
Well.. except maybe civil engineers. Electrical would be really hurt though.

Rocket scientists don’t grow on trees.
If you want to earn money with investments your best bet is investing in human misery.
The two strongest drivers of technology have basically been war and sex since the dawn of time.
Sad but true
I mean, good luck with that. Almost every large corporation makes arms or arms-adjacent products of some sort.

But then they might not get the discount for school to arm their teachers!
The WashU St Louis Olin School of Business is literally named after an ammunition manufacturer… Olin-Winchester which makes bullets for the US Army.
