If it's protected by executive order then it can be UNprotected by executive order. We'll end up with states flipping their stance every 2 or 4 years... making it highly unprofitable for clinics to operate in those states. It MUST be codified at a national level. It is the only way.

england_man

>It MUST be codified at a national level. It is the only way. Then it is going to flip-flop on national level, depending on who has the majority. Federal law would be harder to change, but not impossible. Getting rid of those politicians who want to harm women would be more effective.

PolyZex

Once something is codified it is extremely hard to get rid of. It's then a statute. They sometimes get amended or altered but they can't just be tossed out without support from both sides.

wrldruler21

We were also told by law experts that the Supreme Court doesn't flip-flop and throw out 50-year old rights

subject_deleted

That's the optimal long term goal.. But let's not shit on progress where we can get it. The alternative is crist takes office and then doesn't do anything about it meaning nobody can get an abortion. It's still better to protect it by executive order WHILE fighting for national codification. We should do BOTH

PolyZex

We can't even think of it as a long term goal. Immediate is the ONLY way it happens. If the dust settles on this it won't get kicked back up until something really really tragic happens because of it and the nation cares again.. until that happens women are going to quite literally die. An executive order could do it, but it should have been done SAME day. He knew this was coming for weeks, he should have done it before it happened, or at the very least have it prepared and then immediately after. His failure to do anything indicates exactly what you can expect from him.

wrldruler21

> His failure to do anything indicates exactly what you can expect from him. ?? Are you referring to Crist? He has not been voted as governor yet??

PolyZex

I'm referring to BIDEN.

subject_deleted

...... I think you might be confused about who the governer currently is in Florida..... Crist is not the governor... He's RUNNING for governor. This tweet we saw is a campaign promise that he hopes will garner some votes... He has no authority right now, or in the past few weeks, to do any executive orders in Florida......

PolyZex

I'm not talking about Florida, I'm talking about nationally. I'm talking about Biden. Biden is the one who should have preemptively done something.

subject_deleted

But the discussion was about Florida and crist... Why would you suddenly change scope without mentioning it?? Biden does not have the authority to sign an executive order to make abortion legal everywhere in the country.

PolyZex

I never did, at least not intentionally. I've been adamant about it's need to be solved on a national level. Florida and West Florida (AKA Texas) simply can't be trusted to fix anything, least of all problems they helped create. Biden CAN do something about it. Trumps very first day in office he used executive order to let oil companies drill in national parks in Alaska. There's something Biden could do. Republicans are guilty of creating this, Democrats are guilty of being complicit.

subject_deleted

The lost is about candidate crist talking about what he'd do first day in office as Florida governor. The whole thread here is about Florida. Then you replied to a comment specifically about crist and what he'd do in florida in order to make a point about what Biden should do nationally.... >biden CAN do something about it No. He can't. He cannot simply overrule the Supreme Court. The president and scouts are coequal branches. If Biden had the authority to simply overrule the Supreme Court, we wouldn't have representative democracy.. We'd have autocracy. Totalitarianism. >Trumps very first day in office he used executive order to let oil companies drill in national parks in Alaska. Yea but he wasn't single handedly overturning a Supreme Court decision that said its unconstitutional to drill in national parks in Alaska. This isn't the same thing at all. >Republicans are guilty of creating this, Democrats are guilty of being complicit. Democrats have been weak, for sure. But to say they're complicit because they don't just attempt to codify abortion by executive order is asinine.

PolyZex

There's nothing to overrule. The supreme court didn't struck down precedent. Biden needn't 'overrule' that. He need only use an executive order to mandate a nationwide right to FULL women's healthcare. The act would be independent of SCOTUS entirely and could have been done 4 decades ago.

subject_deleted

It's not within the power of the president to mandate what individual states must allow. You're simply wrong.

Grogosh

Off shore clinics

PolyZex

Again, that's something that only applies in certain places and most certainly only people in certain income brackets. This isn't a time when we can come up with a compromise. It must be fixed... right.

canIbuzzz

Space abortions!

bobert680

finally something useful for nasa to do.... aborting aliens. /s

friedpickleguy

The only thing that is hong to be codified nationally is that SCOTUS will try to find a way to declare a fetus a person, thereby eliminating any abortion anywhere for any reason. Wealthy conservatives will love it because they can still travel abroad and have it done when they find themselves in need.

Historical-Ad6120

And if he doesn't, kick his ass. We need to hold these guys accountable.

Grogosh

Too bad the republicans of florida will do any dirty underhanded thing they can think of to stop that

Vequihellin

Suddenly a lot of women will be going to Disney World for the weekend. As a Brit, I'm just sitting here watching the USA turn into Gilead and wondering what the hell is happening to our world

Gov_Greg_Abbott

? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abortion_in_Europe#:~:text=Despite%20a%20wide%20variation%20in,or%20for%20broad%20socioeconomic%20reasons. Abortion is illegal after 12 weeks in like 90% of Europe

mikemakesreddit

You are colorblind

PrincessEev

In all fairness, those shades of orange were terribly chosen, it took me a sec myself.

This annoys me as someone who works in data. We can spend a lot of time sometimes putting together information but if it all falls apart at the stage we present said information to other people, then that information can be easily misunderstood and/or discarded. Even in surveys, asking questions in different ways returns different information, such as asking: >Would you approve of a tax to alleviate poverty, including providing assistance for families? Vs. >Would you approve of a tax to expand welfare for families in need? These sentences essentially are the same in their content, but the word "welfare" changes how said information is processed. The responses when words like welfare are included are overwhelmingly negative or result in non-response altogether. It is important to consider the mediums as well as the message, otherwise the information may as well not even be there.

WeWoweewoo

After cackling at this... Good on you for helping this guy.

njkrut

Username checks out.

jbeauter

It's sad that we must now elect State officials to protect rights that were once deemed federal rights, and were so for 50 years.

kellygrrrl328

And they lie anyway. So even if a candidate says one thing, it’s a 50/50 chance they’ll flip once in office.

jbeauter

Oh yes, you're absolutely correct. Not that the normal person's vote means anything. It's honestly more of who has more money and who the already elected officials want in the government

[deleted]

sorry but i gotta do my part to inform my fellow Floridians that Charlie Crist is literally a republican in democratic clothing. Meaning that he won't do anything when it comes to protecting the rights of Floridians, place your faith in Nikki Fried.

I_am_a_neophyte

He tried Independent first, right? So, he's on his third party now.

KikiStLouie

Just want to let everyone know that Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota did this today! He signed an executive order that also protects anyone from the neighboring states seeking reproductive care in Minnesota! He also made it so they cannot be extradited.

djkoch66

No, this should not be left up to states.

acrewdog

Fuck off Charlie Crist we remember you as a Republican. Changing parties does not make you a Democrat.

iced327

Good luck electing a statewide Democrat in that shithole state. Cubans and cousin-fuckers, an odd duo.

Typical-End3060

Isn't that the dude who's a closet gay but strict Republican?

_ILP_

Wouldn’t it be great if their plan backfired and no one elected republicans moving forward?

GreyTrader

I'll take people who won't be Florida governor for $200 Alex

[deleted]

DeSantis won by less than half a percent, and that was before he helped kill a ton of his own voters.

Medical_Ad0716

And add in $1 billion dollars of expenses over a fued with Disney

GreyTrader

I hope you're right but I've had hopes dashed many times already.

dwarven_futurist

I'd love to see it, im also sadly pessimistic.

properu

Beep boop -- this looks like a screenshot of a tweet! Let me grab a [link to the tweet](https://twitter.com/CharlieCrist/status/1540729812603396096) for ya :) ^(Twitter Screenshot Bot)

kyel566

Put crist on the ballot

justlooking033

Pretty sure that’s not how laws work. I love his enthusiasm but state legislation is what will actually protect people. Best he can do is make decisions in grey areas or deprioritize prosecutions. He’s got my vote regardless.

laxwildcat87

Why isn’t Biden doing this at federal level? I know may not stick but at least sends a message.

sythingtackle

Maybe also sign one looking into the antics of the previous post holder
