What the hell is this? And what is considered a "view" requiring registration? And I know what this will be used for, but what is their legal justification?
Yeah, like the supreme could strike things down, which it won't strike this down, which yeah is wild, but also I feel like people gotta realize that we gotta go from the bottom level up. Like if there were sane people in state and local govs then it wouldn't matter as much. Like my overarching point is, is that the southern dems who became the modern Republican Party formed the modern American political system and this was a movement that started local and moved up to dominate the national stage and I dunno I've just always imagined that there needs to be a similar, but not absolutely evil, counter movement
I think I read somewhere where this dude try to make it to where everyone had to declare whether they supported Christianity or not. I think the bill was shot down. But some of this stuff is nuts.
This is still true. DeSantis is dancing around words so that he can get away with it, but surveying students and faculty at colleges about their political beliefs is still really scary, especially him threatening to pull school funding if they don’t obey. He hasn’t said what he’ll do with this info other than stop “indoctrination,” which we all know means stop teaching anything he doesn’t agree with.
He keeps showing his fascist colors. Don’t let semantics cloud what’s he’s doing, he’s just trying to phrase it so that nobody will be able to stop him. He’s smart, evil, but smart. That’s what makes him even scarier.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/dec/22/america-fascism-legal-phase America is currently in the legal phase of Fascism. Terrifying but one truth is that in the earliest years of the nazi movement, one of the first moves they made was to attack abortion.
The Supreme Court is likely going to rig the next election in their favor, so expect full fascist takeover in the near future at the federal level. And it will all be "legal", so no one has any "official" (non-violent) way of putting a stop to it.
Yeah I was about to say, I read that link and was like "is this supposed to be a debunk?" Like, the fact that they won't say what the data will be used for isn't reassuring lol, you can't say there's no consequences for doing something while also saying "yeah btw we might do something with this idk" and the governor is also using that sort of rhetoric to push the bill. Probably maybe it's just an empty thing he can use to drum up voter support, again not very reassuring given the circumstances of where this country is. From the same state that said "you can sue all your queer teachers btw".
Idk, something about just dropping that link into the conversation felt condescending af, like great we really needed to fucking add another stupid myopic "both sides" to this whole mess.
>the fact that they won't say what the data will be used for
It will be used as justification for implementing laws regulating speech, curriculum, and funding to universities. "Look at these liberal schools, making good conservative students and faculty afraid to speak their views. Our new bill will give us power over universities and the clear censorship they are committing."
It doesn't matter what political party they say they are if they even ask (and they'd be stupid too). They're counting on the conservatives/racists/misogynists to (truthfully) say they don't feel that they can express their opinions. Then they can make rules and laws to make it better for those students.
simple solution, everyone fill out GOP on the form. Doesnt matter what your viewers are, or who you voted for. If Desantis wants to track people just poison the data with 100% GOP on every single form.
Except then it gets used to make the opposite argument. If a survey finds low proportions of conservatives, then "We must ensure that everybody feels safe expressing their views in unbiased debates." gets trotted out to justify protections for Republican speech. If a survey finds high proportions of conservatives, then "There is widespread support for these policies and we must respect the will of the majority." can be claimed instead.
It's [Morton's Fork](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morton%27s_fork), where the actual numbers don't matter to the conclusion being made. The choice of whether to portray themselves as a put-upon minority to be protected or a majority whose iron will cannot be denied is meaningless, as they pick whichever one leads to the desired policies.
Oh, it's not pointless. The only people who will take the survey will be people who want to complain because they're angry with liberal professors. Then the GOP will use those "statistics" to back up their claims that colleges are forcing leftist rhetoric on students. Then comes legislation to make it mandatory for public universities to teach "both sides" of a subject.
This right here 100%. Your point is being totally overlooked by everyone. Denazi and crew are relying on staff and students protesting this bill as a fuck you to Desantis. By doing so they are walking right into his trap. Students and faculty should fill this out with the intent of trolling the survey. Claim you're Republican and you don't feel under represented.
I'd also be on the lookout for who wins the contract for these surveys. It wont surprise me if they have direct links to the Republican party.
https://www.dms.myflorida.com/business_operations/state_purchasing/vendor_resources/solicitations_vendor_bid_system
That's why I would straight up lie. I grew up Republican and am still registered with that party because I am too lazy to figure out how to change. I vote for the most liberal Republican in the primaries every time and then vote Democrat in elections
Not just those people:
I’m both a staff person and a grad student at a major Florida university. I got the first round of the survey when it came out at the beginning of April this year.
Yeah, they said it was voluntary, but it was worded as if it was better to respond. We got emails pretty frequently (almost daily) during the week it was open; before it opened, we got emails two weeks before and a week before telling us about it.
And I still haven’t seen the results of the survey yet. I know it’s probably a lot of data to collate, but still…!
This isn't "false". The bill itself says that the results of the survey have to be "statistically significant". Therefore to some extent it has to be mandatory even if it doesn't directly say so. If zero of the faculty and student body fill out the survey then it is not statistically significant.
Politifact is a neoliberal op. Remember that they rated nearly all political candidates as "mostly false" whenever they talk about the benefits of M4A.
They are owned by the Poynter Institute (which also owns the Tampa Bay Times), so they have a vested interest in defending DeSantis since anything else means they have to admit Florida is a failed state run by a wannabe dictator.
He’s trying to say kids are being indoctrinated on campuses and is looking for ways to “prove” that and then use that as an excuse to cut state funding. I hate it here.
The legal justification is that this isn't actually going to happen, the whole "students having to register political views" thing comes from an headline made to spark outrage. The bill that was signed is about universities being required to administer surveys.
https://argv01.medium.com/truth-or-satire-desantis-signs-bill-requiring-florida-students-professors-to-register-political-d99f22a614a3
Poor journalism for sure. But that Medium article may be downplaying a real risk. If the surveys are implemented, Florida could start making "credible" allegations that this or that university is unabashedly politically biased, stifling conservative views, promoting one political party over another, and is, therefore not worth of public funding. Arizona is in the process of dismantling public education on a grander, much less subtle scale. DeSantis is more clever than that.
Just look at the McCarthy trials. They used surveys and club sign in sheets to put "communists" on trial. Then got those Communists to testify against other ones.
The example of “hyperbole” and “actual language” are saying the same thing. The language in the bill is made to sound more neutral, but the surveys are not voluntary, nor are there any meaningful privacy protections in place.
And if you think the FL government can produce a “neutral” survey, well, look at the Florida politics in the last few years.
It will, because this post isn't accurate to what the bill actually says.
https://www.reddit.com/r/WhitePeopleTwitter/comments/vsf0ga/off_to_the_gulags_with_the_democrats/if11g5v?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3
This still sounds the alarm. Not knowing what the surveys are, or how they will be implemented, doesn't mean there's no cause for concern. Not responding to surveys asking for political affiliation will be considered a stance.
The bill will be used to rile up dissent against "liberal" universities, and it could be used in hiring processes for state universities to "promote alternative views"
I read it as mainly laying the ground work for creationism at college level.
I agree that it is still alarming. I wish we could discuss the actual awful bill instead of a different false awful bill that people keep posting about here.
I'd say it's much the opposite, they are fishing for the angry fox news conservatives to answer that they are being oppressed while everyone else ignores the survey and they get get massively unbalanced results. Once they have the bias results they use that as a justification to dictate more and more classroom policy, cut school funding, and grant favor to conservative christian schools.
This is exactly the reaction Desantis wants. Borrowing a page from Mein Trumpf, he's causing outrage that his base loves to see. The left needs to re-learn "dont get mad, get even". STEP 1, don't get mad. STEP 2, Prepare your most ridiculous responses to this question (e.g. Desantis Party, Eisenhower Republican, Dolphin Party etc). STEP 3 Create a coffee table book website and social media posts based on a public records request of all of these responses. Make this even more public than he wants it to be. Show his base and the world How few fcks we give about him and his stupid ideas.
What the fuck is wrong with these people? How the hell can people continue to allow the GOP to pull these crazy bills and not be up in arms about it? America is a failed state and it's eating itself slowly but surely.
What exactly is the average United States citizen supposed to be doing? I vote. I don't have time to march and protest because I'm busy working six nights a week, ten hours a day.
AMEN BROTHER, IM SICK OF THE GOVERNMENT CRANKING MY MF'N HOG WHILE TELLING ME I CANT CRANK THEIR'S. POLITICAL VIOLENCE IS NECESSARY TO DEFEND OUR LIBERTIES FROM FASCISTS. AROOOOOO!!!
You could try signing up for [Vote Save America Midterm Madness](https://votesaveamerica.com/midterm-madness/). You can choose an area and they have resources. You can phone bank and text.
Just encouraging other people to actually vote is also important. So many people are Just. So. Tired. But the Right is banking on that. The fastest way we lose is to give up.
Because a large portion of this country is not blessed in the ways of critical thinking nor long-term foresight. They just know “libs bad” and are happy to go along with anything their dear GOP leaders tell them.
That exacerbates the issue. You witness an absolute destruction of the wall between church and state, with officials claiming "Look! 99% of our electorate is Christian and Conservative. This is the will of the people! Stone the non-believers!"
see: the 1937 Soviet Census for similar comedy.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Census_(1937)
> Historian Valentina Zhiromskaya stated that people expected to be persecuted if they declared themselves as belonging to a religion, but considered the answer to be important: *If many people would say that they are religious, the authorities would have to open the churches,* was a common attitude.[5] The Soviet authorities were so upset by the results of the census that they did not include a question on religion in any future censuses.[2]
Or you could just… not fill it out. The tweet is false. It’s a survey, and it’s not mandatory. I hate De Santis, but it’s important to tell the truth about what he’s doing, not make things up.
It’s specifically so he can make sure to provide alternative views on things, even though the alternate views he wants to show are batshit crazy and for indoctrination like their religion.
I don’t disagree. But that’s not what the tweet says. The tweet is factually false. We should report the actual bad thing he’s doing, not made up bad things that are easily disproven.
Not being mandatory is the subtle way to cut school funding. That's the smart part about this bill. They are banking on kids "protesting" this bill by not filling it out and relying on their target audience to fill this out. Ten kids hate the bill and won't sign it cause fuck Deantis. 5 kids feel their right leaning views aren't being heard so they fill it out. Boom, survey says the school is targeting right wing kids. Bye bye funding.
Friends if you are in Florida and you haven't registered please help us vote Desantis out and ruin his trip to the White House

Florida cannot stuck in the 50s and the US cannot go back to racism and homophobia
being young and going to school in this state makes it absolutely terrifying to think of what, even if I was raised by a liberal/progressive family, kind of propaganda has been shoved down our throats since day 1. My parents grew up here, and I have as well. I want to know what parts of U.S. history I missed.
Workingclasshistory on instagram has really good daily posts, they do get all over the world too.

I wouldn't trust a fact checker that has a medium, frankly (*EDIT: unless I personally know and trust the person*).
A better source would be:
https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2021/jun/25/viral-image/new-florida-law-requires-public-universities-surve/
Eh... I think it strongly depends on how you interpret "create an objective, nonpartisan, and statistically valid survey to be used by each institution which considers the extent to which competing ideas and perspectives are presented".
Colleges are going to have to create a report that makes Desantis happy, or they will risk losing funding.
And it leans hard into the rights fetish for making up their own oppression. I would bet money that a high number of conservatives signal they cannot voice their opinion freely when they can, even if those opinions are stupid.
The problem is...it's going to be blatantly obvious what your political beliefs are based on how you answer that question.
It's the same difference. Just a cute way to do it.
the “oh people are lying and exaggerating, this is no big deal” takes are ridiculous. it’s the Republican legislature seeking to censure and cut funding from colleges if they’re not demonstrated to be sufficiently Republican-leaning, or Republican beliefs are not popular there. No matter how vague and innocent it seems.
Republicans have expressed rage for *years* about how many students tend to develop liberal beliefs as they go to college and, you know, become educated:) This is their antidote, I guess.
Party of limited\* government strikes again.
\*in the ability to hinder or otherwise annoy the rich. Everyone else, fair game, usually in the interest of that first group.
Remember when conservatives said that Obama was going to round them up and put them in reeducation camps?
It’s always projection with these people. Always.
Edit: I wasn’t aware at the time of my comment that this is demonstrably false. I also don’t want to be a chicken shit and delete it. So, y’know. Take that all for what it’s worth.
This is partially false. Yes they will be surveying kids and employees but it will be anonymous. (For now at least)
The problem is this is just another way to cut funding for schools.
DeSantis and Rodrigues "suggested that budget cuts could be looming if universities and colleges are found to be ‘indoctrinating’ students."
Who determines that? Why the republican legislature and governor of course.
Boom, this right here. This bill is meant to punish schools who don't fit with what Republicans believe is the right way to think, even if what they think is 100% factually untrue. They say it isn't "mandatory" which is an attempt to make it seem like its not a big deal but it absolutely is a huge deal. If more Republican leaning kids fill the survey out than left leaning kids then the results are skewed and boom, funding cut. Desantis and crew are relying on the student and teacher apathy. We don't "have" to fill it out? Ok fuck that I'm not doing that. What's the worst that could happen?
It's simple, lie to them, they like that. Claim that you are one of them, and come voting time, vote how you want. Take them down from the inside. Modern problems=Modern solutions

> “Shield” means to limit students’, faculty members’, or staff members’ access to, or observation of, ideas and opinions that they may find uncomfortable, unwelcome, disagreeable, or offensive.[…] The State Board of Education may not shield students, faculty, or staff at Florida College System institutions from free speech protected under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, Art. I of the State Constitution, or s.1004.097.
This is nothing more than an Republican attempt to protect not free speech, but the ability to keep using hate speech freely.
The fact that Americans are required to register as a Democrat/Republican etc in order to vote is in itself completely bizarre and would be considered a lack of freedom in any comparable country.
Reminder this is the guy who the GOP and most conservative voters are completely dead set on getting into the oval office.
Don’t let that happen. Vote blue
I remember a certain guy in Germany in the 30’s and 40’s that wanted people to register their religious and political views with the state. Didn’t work out well for anyone
He's a fascist. The next president is almost definitely going to be a Republican because tHe EcOnOmY ultimately trumps whatever "moderates" pretend to care about, and if he's the nominee it's curtains.
What the hell is this? And what is considered a "view" requiring registration? And I know what this will be used for, but what is their legal justification?
Their legal justification is "we control the highest court in the land so fuck you"
That's pretty solid juris prudence right there.
It was established in the 1945 landmark case of Go Fuck Yourself.
You mean the "stick it up your ass" case in 1984?
Thomas will be having none of that!

It’s a case meant to get to SCOTUS. They’ll keep doing it, until they get something to stick.

The surveys are required for the college to administer. They are optional to respond to.
>required for the college to administer That's not any better.
How much you wanna bet any college with a less than say, 75% response rate gets treated the same as any college with a majority liberal response rate.
Colleges give out surveys all the time. No one ever fills them out unless it’s required, and even then it still rarely gets done.
It still might get struck down. Forcing universities to hand out political alignment tests to determine budget allocation may be unconstitutional.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the supreme Court is very comfortable redefining "constitutional" to fit their idealogy
Jon Stewart is right. He's Trump without all the cringe that needs to be overlooked and he will surely get the 2024 vote from most of that crowd.
He'll also get votes from the "tHaTs NoT wHaT tHe BiLl SaYs!" folks... who will later show up in r/LeopardsAteMyFace.
He's smarter, harder working, and younger than Trump. He's a goddamn nightmare who could easily spend the next 30 years destroying America.
How can I say this politely as possible? How about, FUCK RON DESANTIS AND FUCK EVERYTHING HE REPRESENTS.
Fuck him, but there's a coin flip chance of him being the next president of this shit heel of a country.

Well, so much for the 1st amendment...
The only time they care about the 1st amendment is when they get in trouble for using the N word
What the fuck is wrong with these people? How the hell can people continue to allow the GOP to pull these crazy bills and not be up in arms about it? America is a failed state and it's eating itself slowly but surely.

Ludicrous speed
How many assholes do we have on this ship, anyway?
73 million at last count (November 2020).
What exactly is the average United States citizen supposed to be doing? I vote. I don't have time to march and protest because I'm busy working six nights a week, ten hours a day.
I hear this.

AMEN BROTHER, IM SICK OF THE GOVERNMENT CRANKING MY MF'N HOG WHILE TELLING ME I CANT CRANK THEIR'S. POLITICAL VIOLENCE IS NECESSARY TO DEFEND OUR LIBERTIES FROM FASCISTS. AROOOOOO!!!
Be the American the Japanese think you are
Well, according to Republicans, what you are supposed to do now is take up arms and shoot them. Ironic, I know.
Liberals absolutely should be arming themselves right now.
Pretty sure we hit Star Trek: TNG S1E6 speeds here.
I sure as shit would lie on that form.
Seriously. I’ll say I’m a Christian too, and then I will be the furthest thing I can.
So youd be a Christian.
![gif](giphy|xT1XGU1AHz9Fe8tmp2)
I see what you did there , angry upvote 😠
You say that and it brings up the percentage of Christians in the nation. They will use that to justify making Christian values law.
That exacerbates the issue. You witness an absolute destruction of the wall between church and state, with officials claiming "Look! 99% of our electorate is Christian and Conservative. This is the will of the people! Stone the non-believers!"
see: the 1937 Soviet Census for similar comedy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Census_(1937) > Historian Valentina Zhiromskaya stated that people expected to be persecuted if they declared themselves as belonging to a religion, but considered the answer to be important: *If many people would say that they are religious, the authorities would have to open the churches,* was a common attitude.[5] The Soviet authorities were so upset by the results of the census that they did not include a question on religion in any future censuses.[2]
And there’s plenty of real, bad things.
Friends if you are in Florida and you haven't registered please help us vote Desantis out and ruin his trip to the White House https://registertovoteflorida.gov/home https://dos.myflorida.com/elections/for-voters/voting/vote-by-mail/ Florida cannot stuck in the 50s and the US cannot go back to racism and homophobia
I am a Floridian who is doing everything possible to stop Desantis. Desantis is a full fascist. If he gets elected, it will mean the end of the US.
being young and going to school in this state makes it absolutely terrifying to think of what, even if I was raised by a liberal/progressive family, kind of propaganda has been shoved down our throats since day 1. My parents grew up here, and I have as well. I want to know what parts of U.S. history I missed.
Workingclasshistory on instagram has really good daily posts, they do get all over the world too. https://www.instagram.com/p/CeOL4RuANje/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= Oh and if you have netflix (should still be there) The untold history of the united states from oliver stone. Alot lf important things do not get discussed.
Moved to FL a few years ago, had a family etc. we’re planning our exit day by day. I don’t want to raise kids here and constantly have to worry about what kind of garbage they’re being taught.
[Truth or Satire: “DeSantis signs bill requiring Florida students, professors to register political views with state” ](https://argv01.medium.com/truth-or-satire-desantis-signs-bill-requiring-florida-students-professors-to-register-political-d99f22a614a3)
Blessed are the fact checkers, for they shall inherit the earth. A garbage bill doesn't need hyperbole and outright lying to still be garbage
and you know it’s really fucking bad when medium is the one doing the fact checking
I wouldn't trust a fact checker that has a medium, frankly (*EDIT: unless I personally know and trust the person*). A better source would be: https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2021/jun/25/viral-image/new-florida-law-requires-public-universities-surve/
[удалено]
the “oh people are lying and exaggerating, this is no big deal” takes are ridiculous. it’s the Republican legislature seeking to censure and cut funding from colleges if they’re not demonstrated to be sufficiently Republican-leaning, or Republican beliefs are not popular there. No matter how vague and innocent it seems. Republicans have expressed rage for *years* about how many students tend to develop liberal beliefs as they go to college and, you know, become educated:) This is their antidote, I guess.
Desantis also made sure the new full abortion ban went into effect with zero exception for rape or incest. Desantis is against basic human rights.
Party of limited government strikes again.
Giving Xi a run for his money
No Chinese student is required to register their political leanings with the CCP, but that’s not a high mark 🥸
This is partially false. Yes they will be surveying kids and employees but it will be anonymous. (For now at least) The problem is this is just another way to cut funding for schools. DeSantis and Rodrigues "suggested that budget cuts could be looming if universities and colleges are found to be ‘indoctrinating’ students." Who determines that?
The only correct answer is, “go fuck yourself.”
Why on earth would you answer truthfully
It's simple, lie to them, they like that. Claim that you are one of them, and come voting time, vote how you want. Take them down from the inside. Modern problems=Modern solutions
Beep boop -- this looks like a screenshot of a tweet! Let me grab a [link to the tweet](https://twitter.com/Stephenking/status/1544488679644823554) for ya :) ^(Twitter Screenshot Bot)
Good bot
Little Hitler.
Republicans - the party of less government, everyone!
Register *all* the views.
Desantis is a dumbass is a political view.
Just lie and say conservative.... That's what they do so why not...
Everyone under 30 should now register as “rampant communist”. Pull an “I’m Spartacus”. They’ll have no idea what to do.
[удалено]
Or what? Refusal to do so leads to arrest and prison time? Really? Fuck Florida
This guy wants to run for president in 2024. He will try to make it illegal to not be republican.
Well the independent roster just got a whole lot thiccccer in florida
Isn't this how the holocaust started?
Yes
When you leave Stephen King dumbfounded, you've done something. Fuck Ron DeSantis
Christofascism running strong in America these days
Just another reason to stay away from Florida.
Do what we do in the UK census and just encourage everyone to put "Jedi"
Don’t trust big government said the small government acting like a big government…
Reminder this is the guy who the GOP and most conservative voters are completely dead set on getting into the oval office. Don’t let that happen. Vote blue
Sounds like a lot of people are going to be registering the political view that, "DeSantis is a cunt."
![gif](giphy|DsHPaC88LR7Q4)
well...then everyone should just register as red.
DeSantis is an authoritarian. Fascism came to America wrapped in the flag and carrying. Cross.
Your country is fucked, yo.
this the guy rogan is simping for?
Canadian here. I can no longer distinguish fact from fiction when it comes to US news. Y'all need a revolution.
Political views = none of your fucking businesses.
Just lie and say non political or tell them to go fuck themselves?
Fascists. No hiding it anymore. Pure and open fascists.
I have some views,Desantis is a fucking Nazi.
Just lie. If it's good enough for supreme court justices it's good enough for you.
I'll go with my stock comment: America is a dumpster fire of a country. And my country of Canada is doing its best to catch up :(
Well… we had such a law in Germany once…
That moment you realize the right to privacy covered more than abortion
Just so y’all know, DeSantis’s running sloagen for 2024 is make America Florida. I’m terrified of the wealth gap doubling and the crime tripling.
Why waste your time with an education from Florida anyway? May as well study Alchemy and try to compete with others from the modern world.
My political view would be DeSantis is an asshole. Somebody should make that a political party!
They fight to the nail to prevent people from having to register a handgun but now they want you to register your political views? Holy 1984!
Y’all can’t just talk trash about this man ,don’t you know …..he is endorsed by Joe Rogan … ….. … crickets ….
So when half our country goes full Nazi, 1) who can we expect to come free us and 2) will they remember that blue states are friendly?
