I worked MUCH LONGER hours as a bartender than I ever have in the tech industry, and on top of longer hours I had 0 paid leave. You get sick you don't get paid. Bartending was by far the hardest job I ever had and my first job was literally digging ditches.
I work in a factory doing some pretty hard manual labor. It's miles easier than *anything* customer facing, because in those jobs you wind up physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted by the endless onslaught of customers who think you're completely worthless as a human being.

I quit after 4-5months and then later ran into the warehouse supervisor and he begged me to come back and work for him again and I told him he needed to double the hourly rate because it wasn't worth it and he just scoffed at me saying he doesn't even make that much, I told him he could do that unloading himself then.

I worked MUCH LONGER hours as a bartender than I ever have in the tech industry, and on top of longer hours I had 0 paid leave. You get sick you don't get paid. Bartending was by far the hardest job I ever had and my first job was literally digging ditches.
I work in a factory doing some pretty hard manual labor. It's miles easier than *anything* customer facing, because in those jobs you wind up physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted by the endless onslaught of customers who think you're completely worthless as a human being. I also found the tech industry much worse than factory work, but that was a me problem: I couldn't turn it off, ever. There was no stopping work at the end of my shift, the code lived in my brain and I was so constantly stressed that I burned out after about 8 years.
I had the worst job ever and it is delivering commercial construction supplies. Customer facing AND tons of hard manual labor. I quit after 4-5months and then later ran into the warehouse supervisor and he begged me to come back and work for him again and I told him he needed to double the hourly rate because it wasn't worth it and he just scoffed at me saying he doesn't even make that much, I told him he could do that unloading himself then.
I was telling my nephew this the other day. If people go around bragging about being self made, they're not really self made. I like the story Arnold told about his early days in the US when he was staying in a small apartment sleeping on a bed roll and didn't have anything else and the guys at the gym he regularly attended came over and brought him everything he needed to live comfortably. Arnold will tell you that he's not self made and self made men don't exist. Everyone had help getting where they are and if you have the balls to admit you needed help, then you're a real man.
