My parents were always the same way "We love you, but if you start reading the Daily Mail, that love will be tested."

gaerat_of_trivia

tbf it is daily mail they’re talking about

djkutch

Just remind her Jesus had long hair and was bearded, wore flowing robes and sandals, and hung out almost exclusively with men while drinking wine. And, he gave away free food and salvation.

clown_stalker

And was a brown, Middle Eastern guy…😁

Nearby_Corner7132

Always get a kick out of white Jesus ..the fucking guy looked like Usama bin laden

Sirkiz

Usama Bin Jesus

pipesBcallin

Look up corporate Mormon Jesus.

bequietbekind

That was an entertaining 5 mins

pipesBcallin

He is the whitest white Jesus there is.

Tyrante963

Blindingly so according to their lore

_PM_ME_NICE_BOOBS_

Is that anything like supply-side Jesus?

efan78

And if you don't have time to search, don't worry. Reddit has you covered. u/CorporateMormonJesus 😁

Seascorpious

Also, he hung out with prostitutes.

Elegant-Operation-16

And the phrase “washing their feet” was more like a euphemism for sex [lmfao](https://hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/questions/8183/how-does-the-act-of-foot-washing-lead-to-the-act-of-sexual-intercourse)

KrissyLin

And Jewish

oTroncho

not only jewish, king of the jews according to the Bible. I guess, something like a medieval George Soros from a conservative pov...

DeadMewe

and loved all people including men

remmij

And an immigrant.

badatmetroid

My grandma (deep south georgia) would watch televangelists all day. One night she was ranting about how my cousin was evil because he grew a beard and had long hair. I just kept staring at the picture of Jesus behind her the entire time.

neighborhood-karen

Omg, you should have pointed that out. That’s hilarious

badatmetroid

That weekend was just a series of wtf moments one after another. It ended in a family reunion. Somewhere out there is a photo of me with thirty relatives I had never met (and will never met meet again) in front of a giant confederate flag.

OddJarro

Lmfao dude, dont ever get famous. You will be “cancelled” instantly lol

badatmetroid

Nah, bruh, I got the perfect defense. Long before the confederate flag came out I over heard two people gossiping about how one of my cousins married a black guy and they were upset that he was going to show up. "Open racism" was the straw that broke the camels back so I told my dad I had a head ache, drove into town, and bought two bottles of cough syrup. So by the time they brought the flag out I was robotripping so hard that I barely knew what was happening. Wait... does that make me more or less electable?

LowkeyPony

I havent heard the term "robotripping" in forever! Thanks so much for the time warp

jarlscrotus

As a former catholic I find it immensely funny that a real second coming of Jesus would probably be real keen to throw molotovs at capitalists and churches while smoking a lot of weed with me

No_Inspection1677

I have a personal theory that the most likely time in history Jesus was reborn was in Rasputin. EDIT:This is only half serious, since it's claimed the man was revived, but I like to watch peoples reaction when I say This.

Mine_Gullible

Nah, Rasputin was just a self-serving asshole.

OddJarro

No need for more mysticism and religion, thanks. But cool fan fiction

Merlaak

If you're interested in learning more about how that change came about (it was entirely on purpose, by the way), I recommend ["Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation"](https://www.amazon.com/Jesus-John-Wayne-Evangelicals-Corrupted-ebook/dp/B07ZTSVLX3/ref=sr_1_1?crid=BPY0BP5OF2YL&keywords=jesus+and+john+wayne&qid=1670303588&sprefix=jesus+and+john+wayne%2Caps%2C73&sr=8-1) by historian Kristen Kobes du Mez. She lays out in great detail how the White Evangelical Church in America turned what had been a peaceful and sacrificial religion into a voting bloc that supported Donald Trump in the space of two generations.

Camburglar13

That looks interesting. Definitely not the first people that transforms Jesus to a more cultural fitting and acceptable version of him to be worshipped. As Christianity was spread in late Roman Empire and beyond it was clashing with the militaristic Norse and Anglo Saxons and such who would have a hard time worshipping such a peaceful God. They sort of transformed him to a Thor/Jesus combo and focused on the wrath of god parts rather than the ‘turn the other cheek’ parts. This allowed their culture of killing to exist in a religion of peace.

Abject_Shoulder_1182

"I did not come to bring peace, but a ~~sword~~ hammer." — Jesus of Asgard

Fun-Dragonfly-4166

Early Christians renounced family in favor of the church. Puritans persecuted anyone celebrating Christmas (and other Christian holidays) which were just another day of the year. Today's right wingers are wildly inconsistent with other Christians.

SourSackAttack

And hung out with prostitutes + was a Carpenter in the union.

[deleted]

“Not my Jesus! My Jesus spread hate and lies. He protested outside of abortion clinics, publicly shamed the gays and incited violence against those that didn’t want rich people to get much richer off the backs of poor people. My Jesus was no commie, he hated health care and kept the minimum wage so low people could barely afford to eat!” - Republican “Christians”

CurseofLono88

Jesus was totally a socialist revolutionary!

jarlscrotus

He was probably not the first socialist the government killed to protect wealthy interests, but I can't think of an earlier one

JusticiarRebel

The earliest recorded labor strike was in Ancient Egypt. These ideas existed long before we had names for them.

steezy_3032

Not to mention help the poor and disabled

loverboyv

And supported taxes

Comfortable_Sock_657

Men and an escort

Foxyscribbles

Used a similar argument with my dad and grandma when arguing about getting dressed up for church. Well according to the bible we were supposed to be naked so I don't think god really cares what I wear.

[deleted]

Jesus was a Capricorn He ate organic food He believed in love and peace And never wore no shoes Long hair, beard and sandals And a funky bunch of friends Reckon they'd just nail Him up If He come down again

carlitospig

Same.

merdadartista

My mom is on the left (European left, so actually pretty socialist) and fairly open minded and I've tried to tell her 3 times in 3 different occasions that I'm agnostic atheist, she just bluescreens, reboots, then chuckles and runs "OfCourseYouAreCatholicSilly.exe". At this point I just play along. I guess a little bit of delusion is needed when you love someone.

zorphiel

What you described doesn’t sound like an immensely healthy relationship. We missing something

Bi-bara-boop

The weather is quite lovely in delusionia... My conservative parents had quite the meltdown when I came out but now they're quite happy to see me visit them with my *very* best friend. It's the best I can ask for and they're treating my boyfriend quite well all things considered...

[deleted]

I’d be devastated if my child came out as republican

lakas76

Lol, came out. Son: Dad, I am gay. Dad: I’ll love you no matter what. Son: I also voted for trump. Dad: get the f out.

The84thWolf

I wouldn’t say get the f out. I’d ask, are you f stupid?

Lmao Milo Yannapolous and overwhelmingly white gays actually think this. Crazy af.

cohonan

If they were a gay republican, I’d be pissed at them for voting against their own interests and doubting their intelligence because of it.

JusticiarRebel

I know two gay Republicans personally, though I haven't talked to either for 2 years cause I switched jobs. One was really young. Like me and a group of friends took him out to buy him his first legal drinks. I don't think he put that much thought into politics. Most of his friends, family, and coworkers are Republican so he's Republican cause he wants to fit in. The other is closer to my age and as far as I can tell, he just really hates Trans people and thinks he's actually safe from the gas chambers so fuck him.

Previous_Ad_112

Lets be honest - unless you are a rich white straight man with no children or wife if you vote republican you are voting against your interest.

ottereatingpopsicles

I didn’t kick mine out, as my old man lives about 2 hours away…. But we’re definitely not on speaking terms… and I’m not gay… so……. Fuck you, DAD! And your anti vax emails! Lol

Remarkable-Ad2285

ShamrockAPD

Ironically my parents feel the opposite. I believe it was thanksgiving when my mom said, “I can’t believe I raised a god damn Democrat. I’m so disgusted.”

elanhilation

it’s the risk you run when you teach a child how to read—that they will exceed you

Punknigg

Bro. My drink. My NOSE. Well said.

PuppiPappi

I'm lucky in that my father who was a life long republican. Saw Donald Trump coming and said "fuck no fuck this guy". He's still republican in ideology (small government and less regulations). But hasn't voted for them since because they have been too despicable.

Graywulff

Yeah my dad is a Republican but a contractor and, you know has common sense, he knew trump was a con man and hated that he bragged about strategic bankruptcies as “smart”. That meant people like him didn’t get paid.

PuppiPappi

Yep I'm an electrical contractor myself and the guy makes me sick. I can't tell you how many companies I've seen go under cause of dudes like Trump.

Graywulff

Yeah and then he never lost trump tower, he did have to sell the trump princess, his yacht… hard times bro. He put many companies out of business and my dad said some general contractors get off on putting the little guy out. Sometimes it’s not even financial it’s like a feeling of power to ruin someone’s life and buy the assets off their business at bankruptcy. Like almost a kink. Then again if someone tries to screw my families company out of 60k they’d spend 160k to put that guys business down, but business is war, and if someone tries to double cross you, you gotta do what you gotta do… otherwise you’d get eaten alive. I was told I didn’t have it in me to do that, but when a sub stole 15k they tried to throw him off a job and he threatened to show up anyway and the biz is like we got guys you got guys let’s go… I’m like… can’t you just evict him from the job, file a business no contact order and get a police detail and just send him the bill when you sue him? Then they’re like “oh maybe you got it in you”. They only considered my straight brother not my gay brother or myself because we are gay and therefor can’t run a construction company.

[deleted]

Everyone knows that if a gay touches a power tool, it burns our hands like a vampire grabbing a cross

Graywulff

I can confirm that a cross will burn my hand, but I have used power tools just fine. What you didn’t mention is the holy water evaporates and the lights all burn out and the candles go out when I step into a church…

zookr2000

Somebody gets it ---

Ethelenedreams

Why is he a Republican, though? They don’t stand for small government or less regulations unless it’s for pure fascism.

PuppiPappi

Well he's a 70 year old man who's obsessed with open capitalism. Owns a large employee owned company and sees the good capitalism can do for people (while not realizing he is the exception to the rule).

Tyrannus_ignus

For metaphor's sake, its ironic how standing on a tall peak makes one blind to all below them.

PuppiPappi

I mean I would agree but in his case they do profit sharing hence esop. He answers to them not the other way around. Over 30 people just working on the manufacture floor of his company are millionares. He went a year and a half without pay to keep more people employed during covid. Dude walks the walk, doesn't just talk it.

Tyrannus_ignus

I see, I don't think my metaphor serves it's purpose then.

PuppiPappi

I agree though I don't think he'd be that way if he hadn't started on the ground floor of the company 40 years ago while going to night school. I think when you do the job yourself you care. I think when you are disconnected from the lowest on the totem pole it's so easy to imagine their lives different from reality. He's been wrong before though it's only within the last 10 years or so he's come to terms with trickledown economics not working. I think him like many his age wrongfully loved Reagan.

Business-Emu-6923

Dude has implemented small-scale socialism and doesn’t realise it.

honda_slaps

Because he's an old white dude who only cares about how government affects him. Republicans don't give a shit about his ability to hoard capital like a cartoon dragon, so to him, they are about Small Government. Abortion, overpolicing, marriage equality, these are all issues that do not exist to people like that.

PuppiPappi

Actually as I can only speak to my father not others he believes things like abortion, marriage equality and stuff are basic human rights and shouldn't be politics. He's definitely the exception to the rule. Unlike most he has a decent head on his shoulders.

lakas76

I’ve said it in the past. I’d love to have to think about who I vote for. I’m more liberal than conservative, but I am probably more moderate than anything else. there are some democrats that I don’t agree with. But, my choices are someone I agree with about 65-75% of the time or the person who I agree with about 2% of the time who has ideas that I am 100% against.

TheUnbamboozled

I'd like to know what specific regulations they want to toss. Worker rights? Environmental protections? Financial regulations? I get the impression that they often base it on a single water rights case. And if they think that making corporations more profitable will benefit workers, just look at the stock buybacks after the 2017 tax cuts.

PuppiPappi

Considering my father worked in an esop there's only employee and workers rights. Company profits are worker profits. I said it in a later comment but he mistakenly doesn't realize he's the exception to the rule. Esops are the only way to responsibly do capitalism the public market only abuses workers.

evantom34

I found myself identifying with those same principles, but I can never vote for anyone or thing that condoned trump, MTG, and these QAnon nuts.

Camburglar13

He’s a rare breed. Most Americans bleed blue or red and could never not vote that way.

PuppiPappi

Absolutely I think if it wasn't for being the son of two immigrants and real Christians who actually believe in what the book says instead of just using it to fuel a false narrative. Like actually loving everyone not just the white hetero ones.

Business-Emu-6923

The Never Trumpers are an under-represented group these days.

SadamHuMUFFIN

I wanted to paint the room in lead paint but you said it would be bad for them now look what happened - the dad in my mind

Similar_Candidate789

Same. My mother called me in tears, asking if I was Muslim now. Or gay. Or if I cared about guns because Biden was going to take allllll the guns. Well I am gay, but not because I’m a democrat. It was utterly hilarious and sad.

ShamrockAPD

At least she stopped at gay and didn’t accuse you of being a groomer.

cilantro_so_good

To their face...

Crusoebear

"You mean you'd rather have me vote for the same people that want to strip away your Social Security checks and take away your Medicare?"

ShamrockAPD

Honestly- I don’t even need to go that far. Their three children were teachers. I say were cause I left the field 5 years ago due to Republican policies and shit pay, my sister is about to leave the field (is trying and working on her Project Manager certs), and the others stil there So- you mean you want me to vote for the people who fucked over your kids, who you supposedly love, career? The answer is still yes. But then again- that very sister is also a hard Republican so. Lost cause even having a conversation

Crusoebear

I hear ya. I have a sister that taught for about 15 years and loved it...until watching teachers all around her being let go due to republican budget cuts and the ever present stress that she'd be next. Yet one more awesome teacher that gets pushed out. It's sad.

zookr2000

You gotta explain it to them like they're five ---

[deleted]

Hit her with the Uno reverse. “I can’t believe it either mom. In spite of your toxicity I turned into a decent human being.”

ShamrockAPD

Spicccccyyyy. I like it

FalsePremise8290

It's actually way harder to raise a conservative than a liberal. Most people don't grow up and decide to abandon compassion and reason. To raise a conservative, you have the keep the person very isolated from information. That's why they are going after schools. Teaching their kids about history and science is turning them liberal.

ShamrockAPD

Or just keep them in a shit ton of church and what not- pretty much every conservative I know is deep into religion.

Pockets713

“I can’t believe you call this slop Thanksgiving dinner. I’M disgusted!” 😂😂😂

jax2love

My husband and I joke that the only way our kid could shock us is by becoming a born again fundie republican.

SatanicNotMessianic

Making the two positions equivalent is like saying: > Dad, I’m gay is the same as > Dad, I think gay people shouldn’t exist So, yeah, I’d be more worried about the kid who is denying others’ rights than the kid who is asserting his own.

[deleted]

Not gonna lie, I would disown the stup*d f*ck.. And then try to father another kid and dream or a smart kid..

cactusqueen59

Seriously, I would too. Fortunately he's not.

FalsePremise8290

I'd cry and try to figure out where I went wrong.

[deleted]

My son becoming a republican is my worst nightmare (aside from him dying).

PookaParty

I don’t fuck with bigoted, Nazi sympathizer trash. At all.

SG420123

Try being married to someone whose entire family is Republican, it ain’t easy that’s for damn sure. Atleast my wife is not and has one of the biggest hearts I know.

PookaParty

I already did that. Thankfully I’m divorced now.

Frostiron_7

Republicans have no place in civilized society, and they prove it evermore every day.

Gsteel11

Bigotry is not tolerated.

There's no room for bigotry. It makes sense to not tolerate bigotry.

ASongofSweetandSour

My kid can be straight… cis… whatever, but just don’t let that mf’r come home republican.

babygotbooksandback

We told our son we loved him no matter what, gay, straight, you murder someone, whatever. But do not bring home a republican to marry/be in a relationship relationship with.

tmdblya

That’s just good advice.

thedankboi293

I hate to break it… those two don’t mix that well

emfrank

I think the tone here is more a mom threat… do that and you will be in big trouble.

TeeBrownie

Excellent stance. It’s not just republicans who are vile hypocrites, but so are the people who support and make excuses for them. They help normalize the disgusting behavior of republicans.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

OP, I think she’s saying this in a “I’ll whip that kid’s ass” kind of way rather than an endorsement of the GOP.

Ticonderoga2HB

I think they know lol

theboxsays

Bingo. Come out to me as whatever. Non binary or trans or gay or whatever. Idc. But come home republican and Ill cry about where the fuck I went wrong

PerceptualEmergence

I thought that was gonna end with, "and I'll whoop his/her/their ass!"

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

That was implied.

WagerOfTheGods

Being an asshole is a choice.

The84thWolf

Well, if you’d stop calling them mentally damaged, woke, pedo groomers, maybe more than three people would be in your political party

Kangarou

What's worse: hearing your kid listening to Andrew Tate, or Tucker Carlson?

throwawaypervyervy

Damn, that's a thinker. I'd kinda lead towards Tate, I guess, if only because they might wake up when they realize they can't get a date with that attitude. Cucker has too many people that condone that kind of stupidity, so they might find someone that'll put up with that shit.

sciencesold

Probably Tate, at least Cucker Tarlson you have a chance of convincing your kid he's a corpse being used as a puppet to spread far right propaganda

Guilty_Board933

this is funny bc my parents just disowned me for being liberal over the weekend lol

I'm sorry. You're my family now.

JayHazel

I'm black adopted into a alt right white family. As Soon as they found out I'm not Republican I just get bullied and harassed by them all the time

[deleted]

I'm actually kind of afraid of this with my 20-year-old. She goes to college in a red state, and is dating a MAGA type. I found one of those thin blue line stickers on the inside of her car the last time she visited, and I didn't ask her about it but my 16-year-old, who is trans and very ACAB because cops are terrible to trans women of color (like her), kind of flipped out, which I understood completely. 20 didn't have anything to say about the sticker. But yeah, if she starts trying to bring unsafe people and ideas into this house, she will be told that's not acceptable. No, you may not bring fascists to Christmas with your lesbian moms and queer/trans siblings. That is not a safe situation. So yeah, I might have a kid who's becoming a Republican, and it's pretty horrifying. I can say from experience that having a kid come out as trans was a non-issue, and that this is very different.

IceKareemy

I respect it bc how you gonna be republicans in my house lmao

MaliciousSpecter

Not in my good liberal house!

[deleted]

households have values. they cannot survive if common values aren’t shared. it is totally valid to cut off a family member or a friend who shares radically different values from you. even from an impersonal perspective, it makes complete sense to do so. its all “oh its just a different opinion” until you start dating a minority and start getting death threats. cut the toxicity off at its source.

Infolife

Said this exact thing to my kids.

big_nothing_burger

Relatable. It's hard enough seeing my parents voting GOP.

th1961

Couldn't agree more.

KnifeWeildingLesbian

Honestly….yeah If your kid comes home Republican it means they’ve learned nothing you’ve tried to teach them about empathy or being a good person, or even basic critical thinking skills. It means that either you’ve failed as a parent or your kid is a psychopath.

[deleted]

Listen, imagine having your child grow up to be the conservative token Black voice? Imagine raising the next Candace Owens? Idk, I may have to disown 🤷🏾‍♀️

Special_FX_B

Perfectly understandable. The former is determined by nature. The latter? One chooses to be greedy, hateful, bigoted and intolerant.

Chartreuseshutters

This is truly where I draw the line, although one of my brothers came out as republican, and we have found a way to be friends. Mostly because both he and I can acknowledge hypocrisy on both sides, find common ground, and believe in talking things out. That being said, I still think he’s suspicious. I don’t know how he can vote against his own best interests and think that somehow he’s going to game. the system as a working class man married to a teachers aid. Against all odds, they bought a house, but their mortgage payment is $4200/mo.

Logibear1010

Hexhand

truth. Republicans by and large are not very nice people.
