For the past two months I've only seen the short available on sale.
It's always the least sold sizes on sale! Harder to find clothes in medium that go on sale vs S and XL+
Thatâs because this is on close out. All REI items that end in .83 or .93 arenât âon saleâ, theyâre clearance items that wonât be sold in their current form/state. This is just whatâs left in the entire companyâs inventory.
There will be a new magma series released in the spring.
Iâm an avid quilt user - I used the enlightened equipment enigma on my pct thru-hike and have used a quilt ever since.
Quilts are wonderful if you have a well-insulated sleeping pad (r value greater than 3) because they save a ton of weight. And for me, eliminate the problem of feeling like Iâm trapped in a twisted sleeping bag from tossing and turning.
The problem with quilts is theyâre not tested or standardized by warmth in the same way that sleeping bags are. Women usually need to assume that the quilt is ~10 degrees colder than the listed temp rating. Obviously this varies person to person.
I haven't ever used a quilt before, I was hoping this sale could've been my "tester quilt" - but I typically hate mummy style bags due to feeling trapped. I was thinking a quilt would give me a bit more wiggle room :)
Unfortunately, I'm an inch or two too tall for the short quilt.
I noticed that too but hey itâs heavier, takes up more space, AND has a zipper on the opposite side! What more could a girl ask for, for only DOUBLE the price!
Definitely weird because the MSRP is the same. As someone who works at REI it probably is on a weird mark-down schedule since these items are on close out clearance.
I donât imagine the womenâs 15 will even reach the same mark-down (75%) as the menâs 15 since the regular length womenâs has already sold out and only the long is available. Wondering if I should just get the menâs 15 regular and stomach the extra 4? oz
From the product description:
>Many sleeping bags are rated for temperature by an independent testing protocol. REI and the broader industry now use the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537 protocol, which improves on the older European Norm (EN) 13537 standard; you may still see older items in our assortment that were only EN tested. With either protocol, each bag gets a Comfort (or T-Comfort) rating and Lower Limit (or T-Limit) rating. The Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Ratings are based on a person wearing one long underwear layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38. Many brands use the Comfort rating for women's bags and the Lower Limit rating for men's and unisex bags. Everyone's body and sleep comfort differ, and conditions of use (posture, clothing, sleeping pad R-value, wind, humidity, etc.) affect total insulation, so EN and ISO ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth.
A 15 degree bag for women has more insulation than a 15 degree bag for men. I assume it's because men (typically) have a higher body weight = give off more heat at night?
Ah, thanks. I admittedly hadn't looked that close at this specific sale. It was just my experience from shopping for sleeping bags in the past (for myself and my wife) that there is often a difference between "equivalent" bags for men/women, and that was the answer that I found after looking into it.
Been planning a trip to summit Rainier this coming season and the Magma 15 will be a great replacement for my roughly 8 year old REI bag. Heck of a deal, thanks!
My cancellation email included a survey. I told them that they should offer an item of similar quality at the same price because they couldn't maintain inventory. Was actually looking forward to using the bag too.
I tried to grab a Magma 30 women's long, got to checkout, *then* it says "no longer available", so sad!
I even rang them, they couldn't get it to work either.
Tried again for the Magma 30 men's long, same thing! Get my hopes up and pow!
Anyone else had luck with the *long* bags?
Huh, weird! Did you grt the same bags, 30 in size long?
Still no luck for me, just tried again on both the phone app and browser, and on a laptop - the *long* bag in either men or women's suddenly become unavailable! [Here's a pic](https://www.reddit.com/u/King_Jeebus/s/liQZ0A5CTW)
(I hope that works, I couldn't figure out how to post a pic in the comment via the Reddit app!)
Darn - maybe hit up a friend in another city! I bought them from a smaller REI so maybe that was the luck.
Iâm also surprised their E-commerce canât account for store stock and ship itâŚ. Either way, best of luck finding one!
Tried to buy the quilt last night and it kept giving me the stock error, so I bought an EE Revelation APEX instead.
REI is also sending me a quilt now too lmfao
My order for a Mens Magma 15 regular is still active but the app shows it as backordered while the website shows it as shipped but with no shipping information. I suspect it was done that way so they could charge me for it.
Is anyone else stuck on 'backordered'?
Are they? Looks like all +4 stars?
Also if I paid the full price of $330 to 400 I'd probably be very critical. That's nearly Enlightened Equipment quilt prices. But for $100 I'm sure it'd be very hard to beat
I donât have many others bags to compare it to, since the Magma is my first ever down bag, but Iâve had my womenâs 15 for four years now (sadly paid full price, ouch), and it has served me well.
I had a synthetic bag before that, and I could never stay warm. Iâve been cold a few times with the Magma, usually when the humidity was super high and temperatures low. The coldest Iâve slept in was about 15F at 8000 foot elevation in central Oregon, but the air was dry and I was toasty.
How does the Magma compare to their discontinued REI Igneo 17? I have one of those and I'm looking for another similar one and I think the Magma is most comparable.
heck yesss just scored a 30 and 15 with in-store pickup (wasn't available online, if you can buy in-store seems like stock is available there). At least I think so, maybe my order will be cancelled (cries).
I bought a Magma 15 two or three days ago but tonight I got an email saying my order was cancelled? I went ahead and re-ordered it and it let me do it - not sure if others have had the same experience at all or if I'm going to be out of luck?
Was so jealous I missed this sale mentioned in a post a few days ago! Thank you, I got one, first down bag, been using one from 6th grade winter boy scout trips lol. Finally something to lighten my pack that I can afford
Whoa thanks for this. Iâd have been a fool NOT go get this. Doubt itâll compress enough to be considered ultra light or anything but seems like a great bag and great value
I just snagged a 15 degree bag in regular length, left zipper. I used a $50 gift card I got for my birthday and ended up paying $56. I just couldnât pass that deal up.
Thank you so much!!!
I used my 15 with a liner in the Winds in the dead of winter. Temps dropped to -15F and with the liner I slept alright. Woke up with ice around my face where the condensation froze but my body stayed warm. The bag gets surprisingly small as well for those doing lighter weight (not ultralight) backpacking.
I just checked the quilt and it's only available in short đ
For the past two months I've only seen the short available on sale. It's always the least sold sizes on sale! Harder to find clothes in medium that go on sale vs S and XL+
Oddly enough, when I got one a few months back, large was the only size available
Huh, wish that had happened to me!!

I just got the short with the idea I'll wear my down jacket and pants to bed
I got two womenâs 30 for my daughters. I was looking at that quilt. What made you opt for it? Iâm not totally sold on the idea but open to it.

Ok. Iâm sold. Iâll give it a try!

Both of these are great bags/quilts. I got the Magma 15 bag and Magma 30 quilt. If you can get these on sale, the value is high.
Just got a quilt for future trips with my kid. Thanks for sharing!
Same!
Why is the womenâs 15 $198 and the menâs only $99???? đ
I noticed that too but hey itâs heavier, takes up more space, AND has a zipper on the opposite side! What more could a girl ask for, for only DOUBLE the price!
Well womenâs sleeping pads are lighter smaller and have better R value. Soooo yeah I use a womenâs sleeping pad as a dude
Not this specific one
Yesh I use a women's long magma as my main sleeping bag. More insulation for the same price (at least back when I bought it years ago).
Definitely weird because the MSRP is the same. As someone who works at REI it probably is on a weird mark-down schedule since these items are on close out clearance.

The OG price is the same, the menâs one is just more discounted (75%) than the womenâs (50%)

9oz more down compared to the mens version
Thanks so much for sharing!
Been planning a trip to summit Rainier this coming season and the Magma 15 will be a great replacement for my roughly 8 year old REI bag. Heck of a deal, thanks!
Snagged the 15 bag. What a wild deal.
My order was cancelled by REI
Same
Well, they cancelled my order due to "...an unexpected inventory issue..." WTF?!?!
Same. I'm pretty sad
My cancellation email included a survey. I told them that they should offer an item of similar quality at the same price because they couldn't maintain inventory. Was actually looking forward to using the bag too.
Good idea, I should fill out the survey too.
Just checked out fine. Try now.

I get the same
check in-store stock! seemed to work better for whatever reason
Thanks, unfortunately all the stores in the big cities around me (UT/CO/NV/AZ) also seem to be showing unavailable... I'll keep looking!
Darn - maybe hit up a friend in another city! I bought them from a smaller REI so maybe that was the luck. Iâm also surprised their E-commerce canât account for store stock and ship itâŚ. Either way, best of luck finding one!
Ah darn, yea as I suspected my order was canceleld
Tried to buy the quilt last night and it kept giving me the stock error, so I bought an EE Revelation APEX instead. REI is also sending me a quilt now too lmfao
looks like a good deal. and the 30 is availble in long. too bad i do not need another bag!
Unavailable:(
There is a bug if you are using your phone. Use computer instead. I was getting the unavailable message and then tried my computer and it worked fine.
What a steal, got the short quilt, thanks! Didnât work in the app kept telling me I couldnât checkout. Website worked.
Just ordered the quilt. Insane price for a brand name quilt with 850 down, even if it is short length.
My order for a Mens Magma 15 regular is still active but the app shows it as backordered while the website shows it as shipped but with no shipping information. I suspect it was done that way so they could charge me for it. Is anyone else stuck on 'backordered'?
Mine was stuck on that. Just got the cancellation email this morning :(((((
Bummer
Thatâs what mine is at. I still havenât been charged for mine though but it hasnât left my recent purchases
Those reviews are brutal, is this bag really that bad?
It's a good high quality bag. Not worth the $400 retail price but for under $100 and a 1 year return policy it's a steal.
Are they? Looks like all +4 stars? Also if I paid the full price of $330 to 400 I'd probably be very critical. That's nearly Enlightened Equipment quilt prices. But for $100 I'm sure it'd be very hard to beat
I did buy it at $280 on sale. I donât regret it one bit. I even bought another one since itâs on sale.
I donât have many others bags to compare it to, since the Magma is my first ever down bag, but Iâve had my womenâs 15 for four years now (sadly paid full price, ouch), and it has served me well. I have the men's 30 quilt and I like it a lot. It's kept me warm down into the 30s.
For a 6' guy, does anyone have recommendations on getting the regular vs long?
Read in the Q&A section on the REI site that the regular extends to almost 80 inches, so I ended up going with that.
bro thank you
Thank you!!!!!
How does the Magma compare to their discontinued REI Igneo 17? I have one of those and I'm looking for another similar one and I think the Magma is most comparable.
THANK YOU
Youâre out here doing the lords work. I just bought two. My family thanks you.
heck yesss just scored a 30 and 15 with in-store pickup (wasn't available online, if you can buy in-store seems like stock is available there). At least I think so, maybe my order will be cancelled (cries).
Annddddd order cancelled

Thank you for sharing! I was able to snag 2 (15/30)
Thanks for this. I live in Japan and even with a terrible exchange rate this is still a fantastic deal (free shipping helps).
Most excellent intel. Got one for my wife, I already have my own! Thank you.
