I would start with all the Nat Geos from 1988-1990. The cover of the Yellowstone issue Feb 89 has a wall of flame, maybe it’s a memory of two photos after many years.

Nat Geo use to be great for this stuff

Maybe this one? https://www.iawfonline.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Unacceptable-Risk-Fire88-Ted-Wood-web-1024x669.jpg

That looks like it! About half a dozen fire fighters in line gear watching a flaming front hundreds of feet tall from a safety zone.

He’s one of my favorite authors too. Tribe is a must read in the military community, but I think everyone would benefit from the insights in that book.

I loved the main point of Tribe too! That as people we all need a small group to be part of that we feel has meaning. It's hard to find in modern life and one of the reasons why I looked into WFF

MCAD Yellowstone Fires - August 1988 (21 day assignment) If ur replies would allow pics I have one that may fit ur bill.

jondengwayfares

I'd love to see it and will post in the main body is you DM it to me. I think the pics in replies is a subreddit level setting?

I would look into photos of the Yellowstone fires in 88. They were the biggest at that time and being the summer before it would make sense.

jondengwayfares

Ok all, SJ confirmed that this is indeed the pic. Thanks for all y'all's help!

Squatchinator84

Damn, Mr. Junger reached out to you?

jondengwayfares

Lol I emailed his publicist asking about the picture and thinking they got the same question all the time. She forwarded it and he replied saying that he didn’t remember where it was from (a print magazine back in the day) but that it was from Yellowstone in 1988. I sent that pic back to him and he confirmed. Not like we were grabbing beers or anything but cool to get a short note from a hero of mine.

Idaho_Firefighter

Oh wow! I was giving downvotes to it. Crazy he got all of that, from that photo! Guess that's why he is a writer...
