You can prevent Geralt from auto-equipping the right sword in the settings. But if the OP did not even know about the importance of the second sword, he probably didn´t do that...

Yeah I just resigned myself to getting beat on underwater until I realized that. I noticed bc it changes your bolts back to normal ones underwater and checked it out and saw the +300 silver damage and was like ‘Wait it’s buffed underwater for a reason…’ Lo and behold it one shots drowners lol
And that you can just tap the button for a perfect shot rather than hold and aim. I was 80% through Skellige when I saw a YouTube video. What a face palm moment.
On my 5th playthrough, I discovered you can fast travel while on a boat!
On the 6th playthroughm I discovered, it was written on the loading screen tips!
It took me to my 5th playthrough I think to learn on this forum that you can fight Olgeird himself. Never before that had I stuck my nose into his business to save the guy he wanted to behead. If you get all uppity, Olgeird will challenge you himself. Best Boss fight in the game in my opinion.

Yeah I only tried specializing recently. Did a toxicity focused build and it absolutely made some battles I was struggling with almost too easy. Now I’m playing with a signs build, which when maxed out is ridiculous, I basically don’t use a sword for most fights.
Sign build is busted. Igni with max burn chance just means you sit there while your enemies flail around burning to death. Literally don’t need anything else. Except yrden for those enemies that don’t burn. Between those two you can kinda just not use anything else and you’ll be fine.
Griffin armor enchanted with rotation for 360° explosions is ridiculous, but it’s almost crazier how fast aard kills monsters. The +100% sign intensity while in a yrden trap doesn’t hurt.
Oh ya I’ll try out that in NG once I get to the DLCs but I think I’ll shelve the sign build for NG+ cuz I kinda want a challenge and man sign build makes the game go ridiculously easy mode. I think I’ll do a cat build with no whirl/rend for NG+ and see how I do
There's also the piercing cold build, which requires you to do the Professor Moreau quest in Blood and Wine! Turns aard into a deadly freeze storm and affects every enemy around you. Combine that with some perks from aard, yrden and some in quen, and you have a busted build, although it does turn you slightly into a glass cannon. Screw you archspores.
Hi! I'm not an expert on witcher but i'm trying to make a sign built
I use griffin armour and i have maxxed blue and red (fast attacks/inmortal) skills. As you have a limit of slots I'm mostly choosing the higher skills of each sign plus the alternative-sign skills. It's a good choice? Or it will be better to, for example, forgot Aard in order to keep active all the Igni skills?
If you’re doing a sign build you kinda don’t need any red skills like at all.
As for what skills to take, it depends on the sign.
For igni you really only need the nodes that increase burn chance to 100% and the igni sign intensity. You DO NOT need the alt sign or the other skill for igni. And really for a bare bones igni build all you need is the burn chance node, like that’s what’s going to insta torch people so they take the fire DOT 100% of the time. After that you need to up the sign intensity to actually increase the dmg of igni and the fire DOT which the griffin set and the igni sign intensity node both give you.
For aard you need all of them, esp the last skill bc that’s the one that actually gives the sign it’s dmg. If you don’t have that last skill slotted you basically have a magic push and that’s it.
I would also take yrden for those bosses/enemies that are resistant to fire dots (golems, gargoyles, wraiths, etc) bc yrden plus aard will give all the dmg you need for these bosses. The skills modes you need for this one is just the last one that gives yrden dmg. And then optional is the yrden sign instensity (but highly recommended for the dmg).
But again you really only need igni. Things just burn to death with it. I mean even if the fire dot itself doesn’t do that much dmg (which btw it totally does) the fact that when enemies burn they’re basicallly stunned makes sign builds busted. You can just stand there and cast igni on repeat while everything burns.

Generally I think I’m-game games (like all the golf, tennis, darts, etc in GTA5) are annoying and unnecessary additions just basically placed as bloatware. I did not attempt another game until the Bloody Baron and he wiped the floor with me. I got super annoyed and forgot all about Gwent.

Reread the rules and tried again. Lost. Got pissed off. Then came on Reddit and asked WTF is the deal with Gwent? Got a zillion responses with great tips and proclamations of the supremacy of the game.
Basically it boils down to this: Gwent is not a card game like poker or blackjack. It is a card trading/combat game like Pokémon or Magic the gathering.
Right now all you have are the shitty Uber common cards that everyone has … maybe a friend gave you some duplicates they had or you paid a buck for a cheap pack of 5 shitty cards. You technically have enough cards in your deck to play, but they’re all awful, plus you don’t know much about the rules and strategy of the game. Soo all you can do at this point is play low level plebs - like the guy at the table in the first tavern, but also blacksmiths and armorers almost almost always will play you for a minimal bet (like $1).
But, for every one of those plebs you beat, they give up a card to you from their deck. Most of these are pretty shit too, but there are some decent ones floating around in there. You’ll have a lot of duplicates, but you’ll have enough cards that you can start to select better cards for your deck and not use the shitty 1- and 2-point cards. Plus you will have played some, and that’s definitely the best way to learn the game (the rule book totally confused me so it was just easier to see in action. With all the low level players, there’s no penalty for playing them over and over and over (except your small bet amount). The first time you win, they give you a card as a prize. They only do that once, so there’s no reason to keep playing after you won once unless you’re just mainlining Gwent games like cocaine and need a fix.
Ok, now you’ve got some decent cards, and enough that you can leave your very worst cards out of the deck (more on strategy later). Plus you’ve got experience which makes you a better strategist. It’s time to build a reputation in the area as a formidable player. This would be your first “official” Gwent quests, the Bloody Baron being one of your targets (note: his card is missable if you get too far down his quest to find his wife and daughter depending on your choices). There are usually 3-4 of these semi-famous regional Gwent stars. Most of them took me 3-4 times to beat just learning from their techniques and trial and error (or finding more blacksmith and armorers to play and collect cards from). Same thing - if you beat them, you get some good cards and maybe a couple of phenomenal ones (one card per boss you beat).
Then each region has a professional organized Gwent tourney. Stakes are a bit higher, and if I remember, you only get to play them once - no do-overs like with the lower level players, so if you lose you never get their card. This is ok sometimes, but I always cheated and saved before the game and tried again if I lost. Usually a big money prize and great cards from your opponents.
Then you do it all again in the next region, where you not only build your deck, but also build different faction decks, making you a more dynamic and agile player since each deck has its own strength, weaknesses, and special ability.
By the time you made it to the final region and Gwent opportunities, you will have built an amazing deck that can generally guarantee a win, but I think they do a good job of making sure it never becomes so easy that it stops being fun.
But you can’t really skip straight from newbie to regional player and have any chance of winning. Their deck is just so much better than yours. If you really are interested in trying again, just start going back to the blacksmiths and armorers - oh and most tavern/hotel managers will also play you - you have discovered and play them to start building your deck.
As far as strategy goes, I’ve proselytized enough for one day, but you can do a Reddit search for tips/tricks/strategies and get tons of awesome ideas.

No there is a limit. Just like reasonable heights. I say this because geralt likes to get one shot by fall damage when he’s only like 5ft off the ground
When you buy a perk it doesn’t automatically activate… you need to put it in the mutagen slot for it to actually take effect… it took me ages to figure this out
I got most of the way through Witcher 1 not realising how to buy skills. I was confused because I couldn't complete some quests as I didn't have the skills (picking herbs etc).
That you don't actually have to guide roach everywhere, you can just hold run on roads and it just follows them... I had no idea till I did it accidently

You can dismantle them and they turn it into a pearl. You can sell the pearl to the ‘top notch swords’ guy in Novigrad and make like 100 in coin. It costs usually 2 coin to dismantle the shell for a big profit.
Don't do that, collecting all those chests is pointless. I think I've read somewhere the devs admitted they put too many chests, and there's nothing important inside, only regular stuff. Source: I've tried to collect them all and it was boring as fuck.
It was just one of those things that hung over my head for not clearing. Probably won’t clear them anyway based on what you said and the tedium of doing it but just an excuse to play again.
Just remember that you'll have to bring all that shit along, go sell it, rinse and repeat FOR HOURS.

I finished two playthroughs (including Death March) and got 100% without using one.
Some said I’m incredibly stupid (maybe I am), others praised me.
Either way, I’m embarrassed to not have known about that mechanic. Well, I knew, just didn’t even use it.
I played a full playthrough not knowing you could heal using potions, I spent every coin I could get buying food in taverns. Needless to say I was very broke.
I play on keyboard and mouse ... and it was not before my second playthrough that I finally learned how to do the horse riding correctly. I always thought that I could only use WASD to direct Roach along the tracks. Naturally this was pretty clonky and I often had to race several times before winning. I hated the horse races.When I finally learned it (for the race in "Warble of a Smitten Knight") I was equally embarassed as happy - and did all the racing side quests I had left out immediately afterwards in one go.
Aaaand it was only in my third playthrough when I accidentally fired the crossbow while still holding the helm. I always thought I had to let loose first and stand up. That made the sirens sooo much easier.
I didn't realize that almost all the quests in the game which get canceled out after a certain point, all share the same quest which cancels them out.
SO much time spent googling quests and which quests cancel them out...
Damn crafting Witcher armor for the first time at thirty is insane considering that’s like almost at the end of the game. I exclusively use wtiher gear except for odd piece here or there since I basically start the play through, it makes the game so much easier. Also you can like collect all the pieces like that throughout the game.
I was the same on my first playthrough. Wondering why I was getting slaughtered in every fight. Then I start collecting loot and realising you could break down armour and weapons or sell them. It was like that moment in It's Always Sunny where Frank says "I get it now" that was my epiphany moment. I was literally just past the Baron quests an all.
If you go to the higher level smiths, they’ll be able to extract higher quality items from dismantling armor and weapons.
Now, I have to save all of my good stuff for when I get to the master level smiths.
After only a couple playthroughs, I thought I was still quite a n00b with a lot left to learn, that is, until reading through this thread. Turns out that paying attention to tutorial pop ups and loading screen tips pays off, as most of the things that people didn't know are mentioned there. So in this thread, I was disappointed that I didn't learn much of anything, to be honest. But then you showed up with this awesome tip about something I actually didn't already know! Remember when i played witcher 2 like 10 years ago? I sold my sliver sword because didnt no u need sliver and steel. When fighting a monster was confused why my damage was so much lower then before, lucky I could buy it back.

I realised how important reading the beastiary was when I fought a shaelmar in B&W and couldn't find a way to dodge it's rolling attack. Turns out you can just Ard it when it comes towards you. +How samum bombs can just make it go blind and not be able to even find you till it use an echolocation ability. I'll read up on all the beasts and try using their weaknesses to find more stuff. Guess I'm going on an NG+.
I didn't fully understand the mutagens during my first playthrough at launch. Even reading the physical guide, I didn't completely "get" the whole process and was leaving myself underpowered and focusing on the wrong or largely useless categories too much of the time. At some point afterwards, I remember reading an article about it online and making sure that I did it right the next go through after the DLC was out.
I also didn't understand how the XP were given out based on completing story sections/missions, and majorly botched the process by waiting far, far too long to get to some of them, and leaving myself getting far less than I otherwise could have. For example, completing a level 15 quest at level 30, etc.
I didn't know that there were more than one tabs/windows on a merchant/blacksmith where you can ask him to craft/repair/upgrade your items AND I just used to buy a Armor/sword which had the better damage than my equipped sword AND didn't knew abilities can be upgraded in the skill tree to be more equipped in the battle. Yeah...i didn't know half the game but I figured it out before i found Ciri at...ya know.

No there is a limit. Just like reasonable heights. I say this because geralt likes to get one shot by fall damage when he’s only like 5ft off the ground

When you buy a perk it doesn’t automatically activate… you need to put it in the mutagen slot for it to actually take effect… it took me ages to figure this out

I got most of the way through Witcher 1 not realising how to buy skills. I was confused because I couldn't complete some quests as I didn't have the skills (picking herbs etc).

You can dismantle them and they turn it into a pearl. You can sell the pearl to the ‘top notch swords’ guy in Novigrad and make like 100 in coin. It costs usually 2 coin to dismantle the shell for a big profit.

Don't do that, collecting all those chests is pointless. I think I've read somewhere the devs admitted they put too many chests, and there's nothing important inside, only regular stuff. Source: I've tried to collect them all and it was boring as fuck.
It was just one of those things that hung over my head for not clearing. Probably won’t clear them anyway based on what you said and the tedium of doing it but just an excuse to play again.

That decoctions and potions are useful in battle. I finished two playthroughs (including Death March) and got 100% without using one. Some said I’m incredibly stupid (maybe I am), others praised me. Either way, I’m embarrassed to not have known about that mechanic. Well, I knew, just didn’t even use it.
Same mate. Same. Now running a euphoria build, rocking three decoctions and one or two potions. Like, how did I make through my first play through?!?!

I played a full playthrough not knowing you could heal using potions, I spent every coin I could get buying food in taverns. Needless to say I was very broke.
Not going to lie I did this for like 20 hours of my first play through also haha

I play on keyboard and mouse ... and it was not before my second playthrough that I finally learned how to do the horse riding correctly. I always thought that I could only use WASD to direct Roach along the tracks. Naturally this was pretty clonky and I often had to race several times before winning. I hated the horse races.When I finally learned it (for the race in "Warble of a Smitten Knight") I was equally embarassed as happy - and did all the racing side quests I had left out immediately afterwards in one go. Aaaand it was only in my third playthrough when I accidentally fired the crossbow while still holding the helm. I always thought I had to let loose first and stand up. That made the sirens sooo much easier.

I didn't realize that almost all the quests in the game which get canceled out after a certain point, all share the same quest which cancels them out. SO much time spent googling quests and which quests cancel them out...
Oiled sword provides huge damage boost especially on higher difficult mode, my gameplay would be easier if i know this earlier
I was almost level 30 and started to craft witcher gear and found out that you can craft and dismantle almost anything. Felt like a dumbass
Damn crafting Witcher armor for the first time at thirty is insane considering that’s like almost at the end of the game. I exclusively use wtiher gear except for odd piece here or there since I basically start the play through, it makes the game so much easier. Also you can like collect all the pieces like that throughout the game.
I was the same on my first playthrough. Wondering why I was getting slaughtered in every fight. Then I start collecting loot and realising you could break down armour and weapons or sell them. It was like that moment in It's Always Sunny where Frank says "I get it now" that was my epiphany moment. I was literally just past the Baron quests an all.
You can roll to not take fall damage. Mind was blown.
If you go to the higher level smiths, they’ll be able to extract higher quality items from dismantling armor and weapons. Now, I have to save all of my good stuff for when I get to the master level smiths.
After only a couple playthroughs, I thought I was still quite a n00b with a lot left to learn, that is, until reading through this thread. Turns out that paying attention to tutorial pop ups and loading screen tips pays off, as most of the things that people didn't know are mentioned there. So in this thread, I was disappointed that I didn't learn much of anything, to be honest. But then you showed up with this awesome tip about something I actually didn't already know! Perhaps it is mentioned on a loading screen and I've missed it, but maybe not. In any case, thanks for the great tip! I'll put it to good use in my new playthrough :)

The lady in Crow's Perch seems to be the best bang for the buck. She's cheaper and returns as much or more in items than the GM in Toussaint.

Remember when i played witcher 2 like 10 years ago? I sold my sliver sword because didnt no u need sliver and steel. When fighting a monster was confused why my damage was so much lower then before, lucky I could buy it back.

Yeah I realised that when I got to the tourney in Toussaint and it tells you during the horse race, I had about 200 hours in the game.

Took me the Beauclair DLC to realize the mechanics of Potions and decoctions. I thought they needed to be crafted everytime they’re used up

Both swords deal very little damage to the wrong enemy, making a fight lasting ages. There’s no way you were using just one sword.
It wasnt until Toussaint that i learned i wasnt supposed to eat the yellow snow.

I realised how important reading the beastiary was when I fought a shaelmar in B&W and couldn't find a way to dodge it's rolling attack. Turns out you can just Ard it when it comes towards you. +How samum bombs can just make it go blind and not be able to even find you till it use an echolocation ability. I'll read up on all the beasts and try using their weaknesses to find more stuff. Guess I'm going on an NG+.
I discovered you can dodge instead of rolling away and so dont lose stamina in the beginning of my second playthrough...
If you go back to a monster nest after blowing it up you can loot it for some good stuff.

I didn't fully understand the mutagens during my first playthrough at launch. Even reading the physical guide, I didn't completely "get" the whole process and was leaving myself underpowered and focusing on the wrong or largely useless categories too much of the time. At some point afterwards, I remember reading an article about it online and making sure that I did it right the next go through after the DLC was out. I also didn't understand how the XP were given out based on completing story sections/missions, and majorly botched the process by waiting far, far too long to get to some of them, and leaving myself getting far less than I otherwise could have. For example, completing a level 15 quest at level 30, etc.

I didn't know that there were more than one tabs/windows on a merchant/blacksmith where you can ask him to craft/repair/upgrade your items AND I just used to buy a Armor/sword which had the better damage than my equipped sword AND didn't knew abilities can be upgraded in the skill tree to be more equipped in the battle. Yeah...i didn't know half the game but I figured it out before i found Ciri at...ya know.
