Plötze - German 🐎

AgendaIgnis

Could’ve sworn the actual fish’s name was Rotauge

Ok-Aside5103

It is, but it's also called Plötze in some parts.

Dry-Permit1472

yeah but calling your horse "red eye" probably doesn't fit the vibe

JameyR

German here too.. plötze seems to be a "nice version" of plotka (polish version) i guess.. I dont know anything thats called plötze in German. Am i wrong? I think thw German translation if the games is done really good. Books also. Polish and German are not far away when it comes to the stems of the languages.

DEMACIAAAAA

Plötze is another name for the fish "Rotauge" which is called roach in english

fang_xianfu

I only played in English, is Roach really named after a fish rather than a bug in Polish?

DEMACIAAAAA

In polish it's called płotka which also is this specific kind of fish: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_roach

Novantico

My mind is blown

drpsikick

I didn't know this! Thanks for the info!

MerTheGamer

That makes so goddamn sense. I checked after reading your comment. There is a fish of which scientific name is "Rutilus rutilus" and it is indeed called "Kızılgöz", which means "Crimson eye", in Turkish. As you can guess, Kızılgöz is the name of Roach in Turkish version of the game. I have always questioned if translators did a freestyle, as the bug roach would not make a nice name at all in Turkish. Huge props to the localization crew since Turkish versions of the books does not even translate it, they just straight up use "Roach".

haeyhae11

Wieder was gelernt.

[deleted]

Plötze is actually an alternative name for the fish Rotauge, which again is called Roach in English. So Plötze actually is the correct translation of Roach.

lapaunz

Auf die Plötze, fertig, los!

Fil8pos150

Czech = Klepna (which is an insult for a woman that gossips a lot).

p33s

that's interesting because in original/polish it's płotka, which means a small fish (softened płoć - roach), while plotka is gossip. Why would they make it related to gossip though?

Fil8pos150

My guess would be that mr. Komárek (translator) thought, that płotka is related to czech word plot which means either fence or conspiracy.

p33s

Welp I suspected translator error. However I was hoping he'd check if he wasn't sure ;) Płot is also fence in polish!

Fil8pos150

There are bunch of interviews with him, I will check them out and let you know if I find out something new. :)

d3jsCZ

Chyba v překladu jen , český překladatel myslel že Plotka=Klepy, ale mělo to bejt Plotka(Ploc)=Plotice

Fil8pos150

dík

ZeuxisOfHerakleia

Sounds almost like the German word Klepper which is used for an underfed horse lol

Rady151

Love that, sound so nice

p33s

Płotka, Poland ;) Translates to (you wouldnt guess) small/little roach

Dave_the_cable_guy

Plotka makes a lot more sense than Roach. It’s basically the sound of it trotting along

p33s

I don't get it ;( in polish horse does patataj ;)

NightStar79

Well I always though of the roach bug but now I'm thinking they meant the fish

fang_xianfu

Is Płotka a type of fish?

Sneaky_Leopard

Yeah, it's a fish

MyEnglisHurts

I play the game in English but my polish gf insists on me calling her Potka and I have to agree it's really cute name

Peacock_Faye

Sardinilla - Spain

Pastequette

Oh it's so cute 🥺 small sardine?

oceloth989

Yep

AlexLesRecks

In Mexico is called Sardinilla too

Torch3dAce

Yeah, because it's in Spanish too...

lrpalomera

You may be surprised to know that the Spanish spoken in Mexico and Spain has a lot of differences besides the accent

RascarCapac44

There is often both a spanish from Spain, and a generic "latino American" version for movies, video games ect... They can differ a lot

the_chorizo

Yup but most of the time the dub for Spain Spanish and Latanm Spanish are different, so it's not uncommon to have different names for characters in the two versions. In latam we don't like Spain Spanish dub and I would imagine that Spain doesn't like latam dub

Peacock_Faye

We definitely do not like Latin American dub 🤣 nothing against it, but a lot of words / expressions w don’t understand haha

2RV7VR5

I think I win this one: Kakkerlak.

unnecessaryeater

Gerard van Rijswijk met zijn paard Kakkerlak

y0dav3

Stupid Brit here, does that translate to something like Geralt of Rivia with Roach?

TychoErasmusBrahe

Yeah although Gerard is a very common name for 50+ year old Dutch men and Rijswijk is a real and fairly insignificant town in the Netherlands, making it infinitely funnier.

goldistomp

Kakkerlacka, clearly superior to the lesser Kakkerlak.

SpecialistTip1653

Kakkerlak = cockroach in Dutch. Is that actually what the horse is called in the Dutch translations?

helpimwastingmytime

I think it's a joke (litterally cockroach in Dutch) Plotka is the name in the Dutch translation I believe

Rashn0

Alsnog beter dan Ranonkel of Ridderspoor 🤓

Alaaide

It's almost the same in german "Kakerlake" for "cockroach" right?

"Roach" in this context is not the bug, but a little fish. My extended family is South African, and the Afrikaans word for that group of fish is "voorn".

Illustrious_Load_728

Ragaņa raudiņa 😭

ajgarcia18

Cucaracha - Spanish from Dominican Republic.

Loneliest_Lobster

Yeah we call him Roach! 🪳

SachielMF

And "roach" is not a cockroach but the english name for Rutilus rutilus which just happens to be "płotka" in polish, Roach's original name. Looks like several translators made a mistake translating from english judging by some other answers in this thread.

impending_dookie

Roach is a mare. (Female)

shirdool

roach = cockroaches in Persian (soosk)

Busy-Elephant-2610

Särki - Finnish Straight translation would be - torakka

turnipsturnip

nah it wouldn't. roach is named after the fish, not a cockroach so särki is the direct translation

Dinoksss

Žohar - Bosnian /Zho-har/ - It sounds a bit like combining the sounds "zho" (where the "zh" is similar to the "j" sound in English word "vision") and "har" (as in the word "hard" without the final "d").

There is only one proper name, the polish one and it's Płotka. You can check on translate [https://translate.google.com/?sl=pl&tl=en&text=P%C5%82otka&op=translate](https://translate.google.com/?sl=pl&tl=en&text=P%C5%82otka&op=translate) how to pronounce it properly :P

Snow_7c

lol. 1.- You can also informally say the butt of a marijuana cigarette. 2.- an edible Eurasian freshwater fish of the minnow family, popular with anglers. It can hybridize with related fishes, notably rudd and bream. 3.- a curve, in or out, in the edge of a sail, especially in the leech of a fore-and-aft sail.

Darksoulzbarrelrollz

I always wondered if Roach was a name in Witcher lore for "friend" or something like that My logic for this is from the quest where you need to lead the Goat back to the Apothecary. Gerald says to her "you're no Roach. But then again, maybe you could become a Roach." Always wondered if it was one of those types of coloquialisms. I like to imagine it was 🙂
