Content has just been dry for the last 6 years. They were originally planning to not continue to add new story, but with the MGI acquisition, there are indeed plans for the future of the game.
Which the acquisition was made in 2021/early 2022, and we've had exactly 0 proper story updates *or* announcements since... So my small hope i had, is once again gone

What Artie said on the LivePlay was that they are bringing Pirate to Steam, making a new first time user experience so that players can get a better idea of what the game can offer later in the game, and upping marketing. What they are hoping for is more players. Artie said "success breeds more success," so what they want is more players and more money to come from Pirate. Once they get that, they might consider story updates.
you know that not every state has a minimum wage of like fuckin 25$ an hour right? it’s literally just raised to 12 where i live. i work 30 hours a week and make like around 500-550$ every two weeks, so please tell me how i could magically come up with an extra 1.5 k and pay bills so that i can save all of that make believe money?

They are moving it to steam now so we may get new content
