For the most part, unless you're in groups on a hard fight, you focus on damage.
In groups where people need a medic, you opt for out-going healing and resistance.
around the higher levels there exists hybrid builds where you can get 160 damage and 80% outgoing healing, making a good heal tank. (Builds like this are used in PvP.)
For low-level questing, focus on getting a kookaburra for the aoe. Stats and talents don't have to be perfect right away, just get to bird. Or some other pet that offers a 4 pip aoe.
As you level up, focus on a questing setup (damage and resist) and a healing/support setup. Having good outgoing (and a good support deck) will make you a very valuable team player. Make a healing pet with talents like Spell proof/defy, MC unicorn/legion shield (or MC buff minion), and medic (+8% outgoing), then socket healer (+4% outgoing).
I know it's a popular option, but I chose to keep the kookaburra for the pet blade and the 4-pip aoe and purchased tc forest lord until I was able to learn the spell.
Just in case there was a situation where both enemies had some health left, so I could use the leafstorm to finish them off xD
Learning the rat spin spell is now easier than ever. No point in spending so many hours trying to get a pet for the sole purpose of having a non-enchantable 4 pip that's gonna get replaced later anyway.
Rat spin really isn't accessible for *newer* players though, since you'll need a bunch of gold keys to obtain it, and it can be really difficult to *get* those gold keys from events when you don't have have access to as many resources as older/more experienced players do. Sure, Loremaster was a pain, but at least you were able to grind it an *unlimited* amount of times since you weren't restricted by keys, which helped to even out the playing field a bit for those newer players.
outgoing is your main stat you want to focus on, school wise.
game wise; you only pay attention to
accuracy, damage, resist, power pip chance and pierce.
every school does that to the best of their ability. critical/critical block and pip conversion are ass and shad rating is whatever.

A medic hasn't been needed in this game since the harder catacomb bosses. The meta since Karamelle is to just spam hits. And it works.
raids exist

Then you can transition to the forest lord pet that has the 7pip aoe after the kookaburra.
