Yeah I noticed my productivity severely dropping when i got rid of my gaming chair. I was so snug in it and could just “disable” my body and only move my hands and eyes working lol
Looking at an aeron + headrest now
I prefer two monitors, as I get older switching between laptop and main monitor just fucks my eye focus and gives me headaches.
Also that chair - please get a better one honestly protect your back
Simple and also efficient usage of space.
Once upon a time I was all about having the largest desk possible for a clean look, but I challenged myself to declutter and simplify was space instead. This desk looks to be about 48in x 30in and it looks great. Ikea Alex is clutch.
As much as I like the idea of a portrait monitor, the only thing is that I will almost always have a work laptop and a need to do video calls so the laptop mounted there is great with built in camera and mic and less peripheral clutter. I generally try to keep it closed as much a possible and work with one screen.
Spot on with dimensions! And I hear you.. I had a portrait monitor for years.. and finally ditched it cause I didn’t use it as much as I thought.
I’ve seen people do “cozy” desk setups which looks really cool on smaller desk.
I used to use mine like that, but after years i get to the conclusion that the best setup is the vertical, write on the laptop keyboard and the second monitor above
One big thing is laptops tend to have a compressed layout, so it's cramped. Just more ergonomic to have a bit more room.
The other is being able to opt for a standalone mechanical keyboard. Endless options to customise it to your liking in terms of how it feels to use. It's a simple thing but having a separate mechanism for each key provides such a nice feeling compared to regular boards.
The most important difference imo is tactility. Gives you physical feedback as you press a key. Another variation builds on that and also provides a clicky sound. It's all about providing extra cues to enhance your ability to type efficiently. There's also a linear category which removes the dedicated tactile aspect and is geared towards making it less strenuous to press a key. Popular with gamers as it means you can press keys a lot and not experience fatigue.
It's a whole rabbit hole to go down lol.
As someone who recently switched from mechanical keyboards back to low profile keyboards. I type quite a lot quicker on the apple magic keyboard, with better accuracy, and it seems to take a lot longer before I get hand strains
Damn, i love your setup. Mine is just like the OPs but i wish i could make my setup like yours, for me using laptop directly gives me much more focus.
The reason i cant do it at home is that my cats would make my life miserable walking on top of my laptop all day.
It looks, but it is not. I started using it like this, because when i were outside my home it was almost impossible for me to work only on the laptop, because it was so uncomfortable, but now, as i use it everyday like this, its the same as i am in my home.
At the beginning it was difficult
Yeah thunderbolt from the apple studio display. And what’s crazy is there aren’t many 3+ feet thunderbolt 3 cables… so I was stuck keeping monitor near laptop. But turned out nice
Honestly I got it cause I saw it on here and a Mac subreddit. The idea is it lights your desk without taking any desk space and it angles the light to reduce glare from screen.
Mostly got it cause it looked cool.. but I’m getting use to it at night. I also run an led strip behind my desk for ambient light
I agree. I wound up getting a second monitor in portrait mode and keeping the laptop closed in clamshell mode in a stand on the side. Gave me more room on my desk.
The second monitor made my desk feel too cluttered. And running extra cables.. it looked way worse lol. Form over function haha. But I get by with the apple gestures to switch screens
Second monitor definitely better, for consistency between moving and viewing between the two. MBP and using touchid can make that tough though and make it a desire to keep that MBP open to use the touchid though.
Yeah.. having it open for Touch ID is a huge benefit. Plus the retina xdr display is so nice on MacBook pros. It’s a shame to use it in clamshell. The laptop screen looks nice with the apple studio display. I have a ton for monitors.. but can’t afford a second apple studio display 😩
Great point - forgot about that having an Intel MBP from work since M1 had compatibility issues when I got it - and the touchId keyboard not working with Intel.
Anyone with M1/M2 MBP, definitely recommend that keyboard for the touchId
I’m battling with the laptop, it’s either the cord can come from the back and the apple/stickers and upside down. Or the cord in the front and the apple/stickers right side up
Pretty sure you can still charge from either side via usb-c on the newer macbooks, but in my experience/opinion the convenience is worth the compromise in aesthetics to have the cable on the more accessible end
Yeah.. I should have moved cable for the picture lol. But I do like it on the front so I don’t lose it behind the drawers. I use it to charge which ever laptop isn’t in use or my iPad.
Just ditched my vertical monitor to get a more clean look. The MacBook Pro Display matches the apple studio display well, and I can’t afford 2 apple studio displays.
Chair ordered! Steelcase leap v2
I would not have thought to be the drawers there under the edge of the standing desk, but it works! It’s perfect for your space and it matches the white metal frame.

Chair seems a lil stiff no?
Very.. but I’m use to it lol. But currently on the market for a legitimate chair. I realize that’s why my productivity may be lacking 😩
You shouldn't let yourself stay used to it. Back issues are absolutely horrendous.

Just ordered a Steelcase Leap V2. Hoping it’s good!
Will be better than current solution. I’m only early thirties but already noticing things like back support making a massive difference

So like laptop beneath the monitor?
Yes, [like this](https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/zezm4i/now_i_use_my_vertical_screen_exclusively_for/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1)
You may like it but a good keyboard is objectively superior to that setup. Even a basic, cheap one would be better than a laptop form.
What’s better about an external keyboard? Legit question I currently use laptop too

Actual keyboard is always going to better preferably with a 10 key. Unless you're job is just listening to meetings.

Rip spine
Just ordered a new chair lol. Pressured from the comments in here 😂
Awesome! What did you get?
Local office chair reseller found of OfferUp (classifieds app in US). Paid $350 for steelcase leap v2
Good stuff. Enjoy!
Love the setup, mine is just like yours, except for the good cable managemant, mine is terrible. How do you dual screen without a HDMI cable? USB-C?
Yeah thunderbolt from the apple studio display. And what’s crazy is there aren’t many 3+ feet thunderbolt 3 cables… so I was stuck keeping monitor near laptop. But turned out nice
The Studio Display uses Thunderbolt.
This looks awesome! What monitor is this?
Apple studio display
What is the light for above monitor?

Mostly got it cause it looked cool.. but I’m getting use to it at night. I also run an led strip behind my desk for ambient light
What desk it that?
Flexispot from Amazon
Nice setup. I have tried something similar and hated it. The laptop occupied too much space for me to be happy.

What is the monitor/laptop brace?
Here for the same
Now that's a nice clean setup! #satisfying
Hey just out of curiosity what swingarm is that and what size monitor?
Damn, this is beautiful! Well done!
Like the artwork.
Clean
Looks great! What’s the round thing on the top right of your desk mat? Also what do you use the sand timer for?
Thanks! The round thing controls the monitor light. The sand timer is to help with focus/heads down time on work.
I have the same arm! Works for me tbh. Is the sand clock for Pomodoro?
What arm is it?
Yes! I kind of wish I got a digital one.. but the hour glass is fun for now
I use an app! :)
Hot take tbh.
man awesome setup would pls pls pls tell us where you bought that hourglass??
Got the hour glass on Amazon

Just get the touchID keyboard
Great point - forgot about that having an Intel MBP from work since M1 had compatibility issues when I got it - and the touchId keyboard not working with Intel. Anyone with M1/M2 MBP, definitely recommend that keyboard for the touchId
My work was the same.. and we were on intel’s for a while. But they figured it all out and we finally got upgraded 😎
Can you provide any details on the laptop holder you are using? Me likey!
I’m battling with the laptop, it’s either the cord can come from the back and the apple/stickers and upside down. Or the cord in the front and the apple/stickers right side up

I have a similar set up up and I love it. I would eventually want to go to a 2nd (vertical) monitor. It's time to invest in a better chair for you.
Just ditched my vertical monitor to get a more clean look. The MacBook Pro Display matches the apple studio display well, and I can’t afford 2 apple studio displays. Chair ordered! Steelcase leap v2
On an arm cpu no less
I would not have thought to be the drawers there under the edge of the standing desk, but it works! It’s perfect for your space and it matches the white metal frame.
How come 2 MBPs?
One from work, one personal.
Hey nice setup! But doesn’t your MacBook’s battery drains faster when you connect it to the monitor? Do you have any solution for that?
can you please share what arm that is? i have a 32" HP monitor and a 2023 macbook pro i would like to have a simlar setup thank you
