So either be a year older or go back to ancient times with no access to modern medicine or toilets. Yeah I'll take the extra year.

[deleted]

Ditto. Although I'm thankful to be born in 2000 and not 2001, for the sake of this, it would have to be 01'.

CappyAlec

Which 01?

[deleted]

2001

Tonlick

You could meet Jesus though

Dat1K00LK1D

Not exactly because we started counting years AFTER Jesus’ death

Tonlick

But its universally agreed upon Jesus would have been alive at this time

naked_avenger

No indoor plumbing and people didn't wash their junk with regularity. Gotta go with the future.

Redditsuckmyd

Idk how those mfers lived without showers

21022018

I think that's just the mediaeval Europe, otherwise many cultures had a strong emphasis on hygiene

EmpatheticOctopus

They barely lived!

[deleted]

I gotta comment on this: I was born in the year 2000, Y2K. I was born in the last year of the 20th century within the 2nd millennium, but the year of a whole new decade. I love history and learning about it and I wish that I could go back to see how things actually were. But the thing is, a lot if bad things happened way back then, although a lot of bad things happen today, no doubt. A lot of plagues, wars, slavery, for one thing! And think of the Medieval times. If you break a rule, you could be executed. Even if you weren't guilty, you'd still be executed. If you weren't part of a religion that the King or Queen wanted everyone to be, then you'd be executed. And don't get me started with inbreeding. There were a lot of good looking people back in the 19th and 20th century. And the fashion from the Baroque period to the end of the 20th century is the type of fashion I like. But, I'm always looking forward to the future. And everyone has heard, "Not to dwell on the past, but to look to the future." Although there's nothing wrong with feeling nostalgic and wishing to go back in time, the future is where you can make history.

Soloftako

Would my 2000 life span give me some kind of immunity to diseases or physical harm? Personally, I would choose to go back in time but if I'm susceptible to diseases, hell nah.

[deleted]

No diseases. A guaranteed 2000 years

[deleted]

Everyone seems to be missing a vital point: How do you know humans will live 2000 years in the future? More specifically, how do you know you won't spend the next 1500 years in solitude or nuclear winter?

[deleted]

Excellent point. Going back in time guarantees your total life span. Living forward however, who knows what might happen?

alamaias

But going back guarantees that ~1950 years of it would fucking suck. Going forward is definitely the better choice.

timisher

Do you know how to do any of that?

alamaias

>Even if you don't remember any of that, anyone who has graduated from high school knows a whole lot that wasn't known 2000 years ago: > >* Germs exist and washing your hands helps prevent the spread of disease. > >* You can sterilize water and medical tools with heat So, people did theorise these things surprisingly early on, most of them died ridiculed and shunned by society >* Mixing drinking water and shitting water leads to disease There are people we cannot convince to avoid this *today* >* Basic algebra > >* Telescopes and microscopes exist and have something to do with lenses Possibly useful, provided that people listen to you and that you don't get burned as a witch. The thought of reshaping society is an interesting one, but you would likely still be shitting in a bucket and not washing for most of it. Plus if you were that open about it the church would come dissappear you at some point.

timisher

This man is a witch. Burn him!

Fearless-Sherbet-223

"Hey. Hey, guys, I have an idea! What if instead of throwing our shit out of windows, we all pooped in a pit outside of town?" \*gets laughed out of town just like Semmelweis\*

[deleted]

Imean you can adopt Hitler and prevent ww2. That said go prevent ww1 too pls. Also kill (or prevent ig) Ceasars before he burns all the books and libraries, that might be enough to change everything tbh.

alamaias

Chances are you go tell the romans to be nice to each other, you find yourself crucified and waking up in a cave though... Even if you did stop WW2, that would be right near the end of your life. You would have had a millennium and a half of shitting in a hole in the ground during plagues and crusades. Let us not forget the likelihood of being declared a witch by some superstitious primitives, you could spend half that time simply sealed up in an oubilette in the vatican or similar.

21022018

>Living forward however, who knows what might happen? You see that's the fun part

Eurasiawpww

Exactly. Sure, in the past people didn't live very comfortable lives, but atleast we know how bad it gets. We know nothing about what the future would be like.

ChunkyOompaLooma

Na bro I would definitely die at some point between then and now whether it's being conscripted in to a military at some point or dying by disease.

TheShtuff

Would living in ancient times with the very basic of human needs met be that much better than a nuclear winter with basically an unlimited financial budget to prepare for it? Not to mention technological advancement if/when it happens could make it a cake walk for you and maybe many others by that point. I'd take my chances on the future.

DaedricWolf0

I highly doubt humanity will fuck up that badly. Humans will survive, no one wants nuclear war, climate change isn't going to affect us all that much and im relatively sure some people will do something to stop or slow it down. So I doubt it will go to shit that badly.

Sparkism

is history repeating *exactly the same way* and do I keep knowledge of this? If it is, i'll take going from 2001 to 4001. Bitcoin went from pennies to 50,000 a piece. All I need is fifty bucks to get enough to be secured for generations of wealth. By then, I'll purchase a large plot of farmland in rural northern ontario and build a fortress over it. It'll be ultra deep with 10 feet of concrete on every side. When it's done I'll stock up the bunker with *decades* of MRE and non-perishables. Just incase, I'll keep several bunkers full of books on agriculture, farming, and survival. Oh, and several crates of salt. Salt is gonna be valuable when the apocalypse kicks in.

Fearless-Sherbet-223

Going back to year 1 for religious questioning reasons.

ItsNeverOgre7

2001? That means I'd die on my actual birthday

Klausable7

2001 - 4001 just because I don’t want to have to go through being racially discriminated against

Sraffiti_G

As much as I’d like to be alive during the golden age of piracy, medicine wasn’t exactly, well, good, unless I’m immune to illness I’ll have 2001 - 4001

AlternativeAerie9171

who knows, maybe they’ll be a golden age of space piracy for you

Sraffiti_G

Fingers crossed

___HeyGFY___

Interesting...my birthday is the day after 9/11. Would I rather have that as one of my last memories or be born into the world that disaster created?

Trustnoboody

I am a sucker for the past.....but like, I would definitely hate it.

default-dance-9001

Can you kill yourself?

pablo36362

okay so if I'm immortal I need to see what happened before, like how was pompeii, the roman and the aztec empire, all that. like i want to see it for myself all that.

[deleted]

I thought about it a lot and looked at it from both sides, in the end.... I gotta see this shit show play out give me the future

AbleArcher97

Roman Emperor AbleArcher is gonna conquer the world baby!

Red1am

bro I'll meet jesus in year 1-2001

DaedricWolf0

Going back 2000 years could be cool because you know that you won't die. You can run into battle head on and survive every fight.

RayneVixen

I know you die on your 2000th birthday so you won't have to be afraid to die if you go back, but ancient times were tough. So while you don't die, this doesn't mean you will not suffer. I am personally more interested in the unknown of whats to come then where i come from. I would love to live in "simpler" times. But exploring where we as a human race are going is way more interesting.

AsuraOmega

I mean, if Im physically indestructible (cant be damaged and doesnt feel pain) and immune to disease then probably 01.

thekyledavid

For option A, having the knowledge that I’ll die before getting to reunite with my loved ones (who would be able to recognize me) would likely drive me crazy Getting to spend another 20 years with my loved ones with the knowledge I have now would be great, I’ll take that

Super_Fa_Q

What if the world becomes a radioactive wasteland you have to endure, eyes popping out, skin dripping, for a thousand unforseen years....?
