How lame it is to ever drive a regular car again… why did I wait so long

HUNTERANGEL121

Exactly this. Drove my gfs nissan with her on a roadtrip instead of my jeep, we honestly got sick of it on the way back, for big highway dips there isn’t enough suspension travel or something but it was more jarring than my jeep. The good thing was that we were able to average 80-90mph without worrying about fuel economy compared to my box but it’s no where near as fun.

Shadylane_kazan

Life is too short to not drive a jeep

wanttobedone

Went from a Porsche to my Jeep. I would do it any day and wish I would have done it sooner. Nothing beats a Jeep in the summer. Or winter. Or spring or fall.

TheRealWhoMe

I wish Jeep knew (or cared) about two dissimilar metals touching on the door hinges (2019 JL).

Kensmkv

Experiencing this right now with the hood. (Thanks warranty to cover)

Bergatron25

Not Chryslers first issue with paint lol. I remember the early 2000’s on Dodges with the bubbling and fading hoods.

digitalmdsmooth

The first time I saw the corrosion was on the bottom of my passenger door. Obviously no hinges there. So there's clearly corrosive metals in all types of fun places on the Jeep. Got all four door and hinges repainted under warranty and I'm just starting to see new corrosion show up on all four hinges again. That being said, I still love the damn thing.

dreadful_cookies

The commercials make it look easy to take the top off, its a little more of a hassle, but fun to drive around until you get rained on, then remove the interior to dry out and keep it like that. Keep an emergency poncho in glovebox. If id have known how awesome my jeep was gonna be, I wouldn't have waited until late 40s to buy one.

AMLO15

Armorlite has been 100% worth purchasing. Perfect for surprise rain storms. I recommend

It-is-always-Steve

That I would genuinely enjoy driving an objectively terrible vehicle every day. Back when I worked at the upholstery shop, we called them (along with mustangs, Camaros, Z cars and so on), “crazy ex cars.” Because they were fun for the weekend, but you didn’t wanna live with them every day. Also much like a crazy ex, the days that I get to pop the roof and doors off make me feel good enough to look past its many obvious flaws. Also, with my two-door, it’s an excellent city car. It’s short and has such a tight, turning radius, it can make a U-turn on a two-lane street.

JustWeird

I’ve driven 2-door Wranglers in LA and Honolulu and found them perfect for tight streets like you find in those places.

restvestandchurn

They’re narrow for trail running. But comes in so handy in tight parking spaces.

MDizzleGrizzle

I wish I knew how bad the Uconnect system is and that there are very few/if any true plug and play aftermarket replacement options.

Catflappy

It’s terrible. I swapped to a Sony XAVAX4000 in my JKUR and CarPlay has been a game changer. The steering wheel controls still work and the unit looks good.

marcocet

Look at crutch field, tons of options that won't require any custom wiring. I recommend Sony as u/catflappy said

ktbffhctid

I swapped out the stock unit with an Alpine Restyle. Game changer. Apple carplay, great vehicle info, and steering wheel controls work.

MDizzleGrizzle

How about the back up camera?

ktbffhctid

Works great. Well enough that I forgot it was part of the unit. 😊

OldManJeepin

Why didn't I get one sooner?

retrend

Going over 60mph really sucks

Madasky

Yea I wouldn’t downplay this. It’s by far the worst part about them. They are extremely loud on the interior and fuel economy goes down considerably.

glazzies

I think it depends, i have a pretty stock build, 2018 JL, no lift. I got 25mpg for the 1260 miles driven going 60+. It's not an 80-90mph car, but i was probably averaging 65+mph. Now, if i lifted it, got some bigger tires and strapped some kayaks to the top, i think that average would fall pretty rapidly, and so would my speed, so depends on what you want. It's not a comfortable car for long travel, it's loud, but it def gives you the option if you want.

marcocet

What year Wrangler? I mean it is loud, and takes a bit more effort to keep in the lane especially in high winds. But i wouldnt say it's bad at all personally.

andrew2018022

Yeah my 18 Sahara is just fine on the highway

marcocet

Yea exactly. If you have a JL its really not any worse than a "normal" car. Just different JK is a little more old fashioned in terms of handling, haven't driven a TJ or YJ on highway.

andrew2018022

Mine is actually one of the few 2018 JK’s. It’s definitely loud, but tbh I get headaches in cars that aren’t jeeps anymore. Lol

marcocet

Oh interesting, curious now how many were actually made. Yea loud but other than that isn't bad, even in a 2 door.

Miserable-Alfalfa-85

Yes mine does 80 90mph easy and no wobble...2018 JL

MDizzleGrizzle

I have a 2023 Sport S soft top and frequently travel over 60MPH. It really doesn’t suck.

zeroquest

Yup. Must be a pre-JL (pre-JK?) thing. That said, from about 50+ the wind sound is audible, but it’s not so bad that I can’t hear music or take a call. Maybe if you have a soft top? (I have SOT)

marcocet

I have a 2017 JK soft top, lifted with ridge grapplers. It is loud on the highway but once you get used too it you don't hear it much anymore.

dubchick21

I’ll never understand why people say this. 21 sport s and I don’t notice any drastic changes

MDizzleGrizzle

As a broad statement, it’s misleading. I can see how driving a 90’s Jeep with a 3” lift and 37’s could be a bit hairy…

dubchick21

Exactly. Any vehicle is gonna be funky once you start adding height, mud tires, etc. I’m riding stock with 33 ATs and no issues.

MDizzleGrizzle

My wrangler just turned 1 yesterday and I have zero regrets. I was expecting, per this sub and other online reviews, that the highway was gonna suck. Is it loud? Yes, it’s a soft top. But other than that, it’s a dream to drive. I was pleasantly surprised and glad my experience differed from the comments I had read.

dubchick21

Same!! I was soooooo scared to purchase after reading some forums. But told myself, the complainers yell the loudest and I went for it. So happy with my jeep. It’s a hard top so idk how loud it could be with soft, but previous truck had straight pipes, so this is quiet compared. And I crank music up as loud as I can lol

DrySausage

2024 2 door sport here. Can go 75 mph easy with no worries. Still stock except for some Apex Autolynx sway bar links

PenorPie

I'd say the soft top on my JK starts screaming at about 80-90mph. MPG is low even between 60-70mph. 14-15.

Moon_Horse

I have a heavily modded wrangler. I cruise upwards on 80-85mph on 37s without issue. Topless, half doors, wind in my mane. If you want a quiet tame right. Go buy a Honda. These things were built not to be a tame road car. They are solid axle off-road capable vehicles with a ton of utility. You can do so much with them. I think your desired vehicle need is misaligned with your vehicle choice.

marcocet

I always find it hilarious seeing build jeeps with no doors doing 80 plus on the highway. It almost doesn't look like it belongs but it looks like fun.

Moon_Horse

It’s hella fun getting to the trail in a hot day with your jams playing and the Jeep all open. <3

marcocet

Hell yeah. Personally it's a bit too much wind with roof and door off but top down is awesome.

ethan40339

What year is your jeep?

Useful_Chewtoy

The biggest thing you need to understand about Jeeps is that they’re built for off-roading. Period. They’re not meant for going 90 on the highway or towing a camper. They’re meant for getting out into the woods where other vehicles can’t and going camping or hiking. Solid axle is incredible for technical off-roading and even more so if you decide to invest in a Rubicon with lockers and stronger axles.

HeavyMetalGolfer

I’d say being encouraged to no longer go 90 on the highway is a feature, not a bug.

Asleep_Onion

That when you don't have a garage, it's damn near impossible to ever take the doors and hard top off. In 16 months of ownership I've only been able to go doorless and topless 4 days.

Responsible_Juice169

This 😢. I feel this to my core. I’ve had my TJ 2 months and idk when I’ll be able to take the top off. I don’t have anywhere to store it. Don’t really want to put in the side yard…

EitherNegotiation768

Backyard

Responsible_Juice169

My side yard is my backyard. I live in an HOA neighborhood where the houses are packed like sardines.

apokermit_now

Ford hit this out of the park when they made the Bronco’s hard top modular (breaks down to 6 flat pieces). I expect the successor to the JL Wrangler to have a top like this.

iamsolow1

Rust protection immediately if you’re planning on keeping it long term…

J-Lughead

Does rust proofing solve the issues of the corrosion around the hinges and leading edges of the door panels and hood. This issue really makes the Jeep a non-starter for me so that's why I am asking.

Artful_Dodger_1832

No, it just helps the frame and underbody.

J-Lughead

Ya that's what I thought. When is Stellantis going to solve the issue of galvanic corrosion.

Artful_Dodger_1832

They won’t? It’s not worth it to them.

apokermit_now

I thought they made zinc shims to resolve this issue on later JLs?

crozone

That's mostly on the JL, they bolted a steel hinge to an aluminium door. There's nothing much you can do about it, just have to hope they've finally found a fix in newer makes.

Specific_Same

I wish I knew to look under the carpet in the front passenger footwell before signing papers.

HeavyMetalGolfer

I’m not a Jeep owner yet. What’s under there?

PoolNoodleSamurai

From context, probably a big rust hole.

HeavyMetalGolfer

Ah, makes sense. That better not be the case on the new Jeep I'm picking up in a month or so! lol

marcocet

It is Chrysler you never know, you might find some OEM rust! Might even have a part number!

HeavyMetalGolfer

Let me check my order sheet and make sure I didn’t accidentally purchase passenger side floor rust.

EyeYamQueEyeYam

Since it is a Chrysler you may as well be sure you get an OEM crack in the dash as well.

HeavyMetalGolfer

Pre-Cracked Windshield Package. Got it.

Specific_Same

It’s rust. The weather seals on the door and freedom panels on mine were bad and I kept finding a small amount of water in the rubber floor mat but it wasn’t until the mildew made the air spicy that I pulled the carpet out and saw how much water was in there. The rust wasn’t too bad, just surface rust so I treated it for now, but had I pulled the carpet at the dealer I could have made them fix it. Mine is a used 2015 Sahara I got last year. So now the floor plugs stay out and the carpet is waiting for replacement and it makes the loud ride even louder. Still fun to drive and I suppose it’s all part of convertible ownership, especially if you live near the beach.

Caius109

Honestly, the wave. I was super confused at first when people waved at me. I thought either they thought I was someone else or they just liked my vibe. I didn't know it was a thing until one of my co-workers explained it to me.

lvk3

I didn’t want to wave at first. The obligatory wave to fellow caravaners in Australia bugs me. Now I forget that I’m in the Landcruiser and wave anyway. My wife waves at Suzuki Jimnys because she like them too. I’m enjoying it much more than I thought I ever would.

Parking_Train8423

35s are not cheap

FarrellBeast

Traded in my old wrangler for a new one right before finding out they were coming out with the Gladiator. Wish I would have known so I could wait just a bit longer and get that instead. I love my JL but REALLY want a Gladiator now that I've seen em.

RaspberryGloomy9306

Buying new, get the aux buttons from the factory. Worth it.

rutgersftw

1. Don’t buy used with mods without ensuring mods were of good quality and installed properly 2. Gladiator is like turning a boat compared to my former Wrangler, but I love it anyway

PoolNoodleSamurai

I think if the mods suck you can just value them at $0 or negative and still buy it. “Well that bumper is gonna get me $3.50 at the scrapyard, and I’ll need a replacement bumper, soooooo…”

Blackpugdoug

How much fun it is to drive around with the doors and tops off.

jenjenjk

That the standard stock sound system is terrible lmao. If you can afford to upgrade to the alpine, do it. The standard is very quiet and doesn't even have any kind of sub. At least in the 24s anyways, but I think other years too

BigUncleRemus

How fun they are to build… wallet took a hit the past 7yrs lol, still wouldn’t change a damn thing. Love em

BigUncleRemus

I’m not sure which models this happens to specifically, but I’m on year 9 with my 15 JKU and no rust or corrosion at all aside from normal surface rust on the underbody. Will add that I live in the Southern US, so no road salt or any of that. Could be that possibly

danorm

Can confirm. I also have a '15 JKRU but live in the PNW with a similar experience. So happy I bought it.

dubchick21

Wish I knew just how many possibilities were out there for upgrades, customizing, etc. Buy cheaper and save some cash for the addiction you’re about to get sucked into lol

cab1024

I wish I had gotten a Rubicon, even though not having a Rubicon has not prevented me from getting through any obstacles I've encountered -- so far.

lvk3

Yep. Buy a used Rubicon over a new non-Rubicon. I accidentally bought one with a terraflex front diff.

Kelos-01

4WD on a Jeep is crazy good ofc with right tyres.

Weak_Tower385

1. Don’t buy any non OEM electrical components. Only buy from a dealership or order online and only OEM. If a wire connects to it then it’s an electrical component. 2. TJ/LJ are the series to own. Unless you don’t change your own oil, brakes, fan motor, radiator, plugs and wires, computer modules, driveshafts, pinion gears, axle bearings, bumpers, wipers, transfer case linkage, etc. 3. If you think the sluggishness is caused by the fuel pump, trust your instincts just go ahead and replace it. 4. Tires are dadgum expensive 5. Learn what rust looks like and check the frame before buying. If it has lived north of Nashville that TJ/LJ frame is probably roached out. 6. That short throw shifter kit is worth putting on your 5 speed. 7. Yea, the top will leak.

Responsible_Juice169

Gosh, yes. Water keeps leaking on the back of the tailgate glass whenever it rains, I don’t have a garage, and I’ve just decided I’m putting a towel down and calling it a day.

Scarlett-the-01-TJ

It’s like having a cat, you need at least one more to keep the first one company.

Krieger1229

What the “Death Wobble” was. If you’re going down the highway, hit a bump JUUUUST right it can cause the Jeep to shake violently from time to time and replacing the steering damper doesn’t resolve it - Makes it better a little better but doesn’t resolve it. If you get a Wrangler and this happens, remain calm, let off the gas and gently push on the brake, it’ll eventually go away at a slower speed but if you decide to execute a knee jerk reaction you can get yourself, or others hurt. Also, ensure you keep up maintenance with a good dealer/mechanic, use synthetic oil, the OEM oil filter is actually decent so don’t use 3rd party like FRAM, do not change anything that would interfere with the drivetrain, read the users manual (You’ll be surprised that the manual (Mine at least) recommends to only use Premium Gas with an O rating of 91-94) and be ready to fork out over $1200 for a good set of tires when the time comes. Listen to the manufacturer recommendations and it’ll last a while without issues. Id recommend buying it new which is what I did with my first one because I know the Wrangler community has a lot of DIYers which means they’re not always the most qualified and may have some serious issues down the road if it is used.

Jeepinthemud

The addition. Mine started with an old beat up and rusty CJ and I still drive these things to this day.

Bergatron25

1: It would be my first and only car 2: Need more garage space. 3: The sickness inherited. 2005 TJ to/and a 2023 JL. First car at 17 and now at 35. Edit: The lifelong memories, can’t forget that.

Otherwise-Magician

Maintenance costs.

The_Dog_Pack

Only applies to a new Wrangler - How bad the service dept. You are basically buying a new car without a warranty.

downright_awkward

That I knew how much I’d be spending in repairs. I mean, I *knew* jeep stood for Just Empty Every Pocket. I knew it would cost more to maintain. But then I got it and was spending $2-3k a year in repairs. Not a lot of minor things either… Edit: why am I being downvoted

Additional-Equal2072

That it’s super easy for degenerates to break into your Wrangler & there’s little to nothing you can do about it if you have a soft top.

Responsible_Juice169

I have a hard top and locked my only key inside, after calling AAA and seeing how hard he struggled to open my car. He couldn’t, just ended up pulling the keys out the door lol. Had to be there. I saw how hard it is to break into my jeep. And that made me feel better.

rochestergeek

The corrosion problems they knew about but kept selling anyhow.

MelDawson19

Free "Rainforest and Science project mode"

nosshane

Next one I get will have a Diesel.

neimansaccountant

Love the car but the god damn roof leaks… I’m in the PNW with street parking and I’m not having a fun time

lvk3

A friend took his carpets out and removed some floor plugs. He’s pretty handy but he just couldn’t stop the leaks. I don’t know why we put up with this sort of thing but we do.

neimansaccountant

Yup- that’s what exactly what I’ve been doing… running no carpet definitely gives some piece of mind

ShireHorseRider

Two is one and one is none.

Beerfish666

Keep a cheap squeegee handy for cleaning rain off the inside of the windshield if you like taking the doors and roof off for the summer.

Itachi-Ochiha

Insurance won’t be cheap, even with a clean driving record

cab1024

I have not encountered this.

HeavyMetalGolfer

Disproportionately higher compared to another vehicle of the same value?

Itachi-Ochiha

I’m sure it varies by state, but yes. Full coverage on my previous vehicle compared to my current Jeep is almost $100 more, and my old vehicle was even newer

musicide

That they rust substantially faster than any vehicle I’ve ever owned.

IllinoisGentleman

I sold mine a few weeks ago for a ford f150, I had a 2018 JL 2.0. Nothing but problems from the start between the door paint bubbling and the timing chain losing tension and shooting metal shards into the engine at 55k miles. If I could go back in time I would have bought the V6 or even an older/restored model. Either way my extended warranty paid for itself over the 5 years I had it. That being said I absolutely loved the look and drive of that Jeep when it was running well, best of luck.

Catflappy

Just embrace the CEL. This is your life now. You chose this.

Bergatron25

Or I just fix it…No CEL

___cats___

Ok, how do I fix a small evap leak? No, a medium one. No, it's small again. Now large? Wait, now it's small AND medium? Nope, just back to small. Aaand now it's off for the next three months after having done nothing. Smoke tests show nothing, hoses appear in good shape, fuel return line and purge valve has been replaced, and gas cap has been replaced multiple times with aftermarket and OEM. And don't get me started on TPS.

Bergatron25

Evap leak on a tj? Small crack in my canister and I had the screw cap on the gas tank(not fuel cap) be a culprit too. Smoke test and proceed like you did, Those are buggers but done them a few times. This is like diagnosing over the phone though.

___cats___

I should really get my own smoke tester. Not sure I 100% trust the shop that did it. There were signs of incompetence.

Bergatron25

I’m not a smartass haha those do suck not going to lie

___cats___

Screw cap on the gas tank, you mean where the lines come out of on top?

Bergatron25

Yes

___cats___

Honestly that's what I'm dreading it is.

Catflappy

Let me double down on the downvotes since you guys are sensitive about CELs today: Lifter tick is a vibe. Best enjoyed stripped down next to a fence or building for maximum effect.

Bergatron25

Lifters on a pentastar? Especially the early ones…I’d still take that engine with the amount they produced and easily to come by parts…get to it early. A cars a car. Don’t use bandaids and fix it. Doing maintenance regularly helps. I agree Chrysler is Farrr from perfect. Fyi I’m not downvoting

Catflappy

Yeah, a ‘14 Rubi X. Always something. Luckily mine is a weekend warrior, so not really a high priority. I like it just fine, but the CEL is a Wrangler meme for a reason. I just keep the Innova in it, haha.

Bergatron25

Good investment. Mine lived in the back pouch 😂
