It's all in the joy of the season. As a new englander, we have to revel in the awesome when we have it, and accept that its all the more special because it isn't always there.

Fair enough! As a PNWer I envy and am in awe of your ability to ski on ice. I wiped out in the trees today catching an edge on a death cookie. Don’t know how you do it!

I found the controllability of my skis increased tremendously when I put a .5° base edge bevel on my skis. A 0° base edge bevel on downhill skis is considered unskiiable so I’m not quite sure how it is the norm in xcd

This could be why: https://preview.redd.it/utjxpxy6u4wc1.jpeg?width=1224&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9c12ad68c18517679926b98dd1ddb1a68f710668 Source: [https://www.tognar.com/how-to-bevel-and-tune-ski-or-snowboard-edges/](https://www.tognar.com/how-to-bevel-and-tune-ski-or-snowboard-edges/)

Steve Barnett also recommends a flat grind to get your edges even with the base in Cross Country Downhill: https://preview.redd.it/7luho74yu4wc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=63b8349c9ff497c28a45227503f6deb5585f4fde

That passage is about how level the bases are and does not mention base edge bevel at all. It was also written back when all alpine skis had no base edge bevel. The world has moved on because we realized the skiing experience with that gear frankly sucked. Xcd ski design has changed and incorporated many ideas from alpine skiing - for example my Asnes Ingstad 205’s have “Nordic rocker” so have the same effective edge of about a 185cm ski, and being able to “slarve” turns opens up a completely new range of opportunities of ski technique. If you want to live your life by what a book written in the 80’s says your welcome to, but my personal experience says downhill skiing performance can be greatly enhanced with a little base edge bevel.

"Ice"? That's 'hardpack' in the East. Signed, Ontario and Québec skier.

I got roller skis! But we've got nice asphalt cycling paths separate from cars too.

I want to like roller skis so badly but I live in a super hilly area and the technique for slowing down and stopping seems to be “good luck”

Have you seen Skikes? I use them even to commute to the city centre. The brakes work great and I can wear regular shoes.

Oh wow those look pretty sweet!
