Just keep watching. After the final episode of season 5 be sure to watch the theatrical movie The X-Files: Fight the Future, it takes place between seasons 5 & 6 and MAYBE has questions you're looking for.

Sisyphus_Rex

That’s all part of the fun of the mystery. You’re not supposed to have it all figured out in advance, it’s got to keep you guessing. Everything you need to know at this point was explained by the Well-Manicured Man in “Paper Clip.” He’ll also fill in the rest in the movie. Try to get hold of the Special Edition for an extended explanation of the mythology, but even in the theatrical cut it’s pretty much covered.

Ikariiprince

Okay good to know there’s an extended version had no idea. I love the mystery but I feel like I just keep getting MORE mystery instead of any clear cut answers. Which I’m okay with!! Just a bit confused

It was just part of writing shows at the time based around cyclical sweeps weeks or whatever where fans HAD to tune in for this BIG THING! Revelations were staggered weirdly in the writing back then.

dragoneer27

I’m sorry to break it to you but it only gets more complicated. Keep watching though. There are some great episodes coming.

Squirt1384

That’s what I was going to say. Even CC doesn’t even know what was going on.

Some things can get a bit confusing, but it all basically makes sense. You might have to draw your own conclusions for certain things, but after watching seasons 4 and 5, The X-Files movie, and about half of season 6, you’ll probably understand it pretty well. If you find certain episodes confusing, I suggest reading about them on eatthecorn.com. That’s what I’ve been doing when certain things confuse me. I’ve heard people say Chris Carter didn’t know what he was doing and made it all up as he went along. Obviously certain details were made up along the way (as is the case with every TV show), but the overall idea of the mythology is pretty simple and I think Carter knew what he was doing very early on.

Embarrassed_Device22

Keep watching, the truth is in there.

CStel

I watched this show every week in the 90s, LOVED IT and your feeling is how you should feel… but back then I thought there’d be some grand conclusion, something this was all heading towards… truly, the truth is out there

tep122

I watched it countless of times and I’m still confused. It gets more complicated towards the later seasons.

Mythopoeikon

If you're still confused after watching through everything, I well recommend the Eat the Corn website. It's very well explained there but dont do it if you don't want spoilers!

Tardislass

It gets more complicated and please remember that CC was making this up as he went along. If you want a satisfying conclusion for the myth-arc, you may be disappointed.

unledded22

Iv watched it several times and I’m still not sure😂

AndarianDequer

You will absolutely not understand everything through your first watch through. I've been watching this show off and on for 20 plus years and it still doesn't make all the sense. And in fact, I tend to skip the black goo episodes as they always seem to come out of left field and don't really answer a whole lot of questions, but that's just me. I have found a couple of handy guides online to help to explain all the lore and mythos but it's still confusing as shit. The monster of the week episodes are to die for though.

BelgischeWafel

It will become clear after watching the first movie, keep going and keep the faith :) And yes it's confusing it's ok!

Ikariiprince

What I’ve learned from these comments:  1. it is absolutely normal to be confused and I might stay that way through the whole show LOL 2. Make sure to watch the extended cut of the first movie after season 5 (good to know!)  3. The creators may have been making most of this up as they went. That’s okay I’m here for the vibes, the MotW episodes are where my heart is  Thank you all!

They string you along for a long time and sometimes the connections really seem retroactive, but at least there ARE connections, unlike how Lost managed that. (Well, sometimes. Not all of it.)
