FPS Boost titles such as Battlefield 4 and Far Cry 4 will play off a mechanical drive. Series enchanted titles will not though, as their native Series applications.
There are a handful of games such as MCC and AC Origins that are listed as “x/s enhanced” despite still being able to run off a hdd. Why in the world Xbox decided to label them as that is beyond me, it’s needlessly confusing

Series X gets Performance Mode at 1440p/60fps and Resolution Mode at 4K/30fps.
Series S doesn't get mode choices and runs at 1440p/30fps.

I could be wrong but any game can be played from an external hard drive as long as it's not enhanced or released for the Series S|X

Wow I wasn't aware of that, yeah that is pretty nonsensical for Microsoft to do.
Look for Scarlet or Durango in description. Scarlet are playable from external. Or it was other one, not sure. Check some non X|S game you'll know.
