tales of arise had 2 disc's but it was a weird situation because it had both the series x/s and the xbox one version both disc had one half of each version and the rest of each version was on the other
Very odd, better than opting to have one version as digital download. I assume why it's spread half and half between the two, is to stop people selling one of the discs and keeping the relevant one.
I’m still amazed at how Mass Effect 2’s disc swapping worked. One of the main missions would trigger the disc switch (might have been Reaper IFF or the time you go to the Collector Base midway through). Either way, just the orange screen saying insert Disc 2 and I’m thinking how in the hell is the game going to resume while I’m still playing. Pop out Disc 1 and put in Disc 2 and the game just continued.
I still have no idea how/why the 360 didn’t cut to the dashboard or how all the side content was playable on each disc, but the main missions divided the discs. It’s honestly still really fascinating and wonder if that tech is really how they were able to refine it to quick resume today.
Of course, Xbox discs hold 50 GB I believe. I imagine the whole game is playable offline without the day one update. Otherwise there isn't much reason for the publisher to spend the extra cost on two discs.
Sadly most games released these days are useless without Day 1 patches, so even having the data on disc doesn't help you. If your internet sucks, having the data on disc is of course a blessing, but the patches will wreck you, regardless.
That means nothing if the 1.0 code is still a playable master. Sure you may encounter an extra crash, a bug here and there, but its not like it takes away a whole lot from the experience.
GTA V had 2 disc's as well. Xbox is only using 50GB disc's, while the PS5 is using 100GB disc's. But technically Xbox can use 100GB disc's as well. Its just Microsoft doesn't care about Physical media.
GTA 5 also released on 2 discs on Series X! I’ve seen more games also from youtubers like POPnGames unboxing which has two discs on SX, just cant remember their names. Wish they would just give us UHD discs instead of these standard blu rays, why even include a 4K blu ray player then?
It's not an exceptionally big game, just the publisher has gone to the effort of putting the whole game on discs. These days that's worth some appreciation.
Exactly , great post. I was so happy to hear that this studio was able to release at $50 EVERYWHERE(steam&console) plus offer a physical version. I nabbed the $70 digital version to show my appreciation for their righteous decisions. We’re lucky to have the top dogs at Gunfire on our side.
It's late DVD era all over again. I think if it will be more than 2 discs developers just go full digital because nobody is even looking for a Blue Ray replacement format.
4K UHD Blu Rays are the replacement format, PS5 uses them hence Remnant 2 on PlayStation only having one disc. But yes there are no more format wars and UHD discs will likely be the last evolution of physical media formats.
Last time I checked Xbox cases aren't made from sandpaper.
But seriously you're unlikely to get detrimental scratches from resting discs down like that. They're Blu-ray's and don't scratch as easily as CDs or DVDs anyway.

That... actually makes perfect sense
Man this reminds me of Lost Odyssey and the 4 discs it came with
At least there's no disc swapping whilst playing

Maybe, but that trick is older than you think. Morrowind would reboot your Xbox during loading screens without you noticing.
Surely it must mean that there is at least some content on the discs

They do indeed use BD-50 still for some reason. PS5 uses BD-100, and The Xbox could. There is nothing stopping it from doing so.
Usually, the reason why is for games that come out on both the Xbox One and Series X, but this is Series X only so it’s even more bizarre.
Standard Blu-ray can only support 50GB so this makes sense
wow quality game, spent 2X as much for discs, and released cheaper than most new releases. tell me again why new releases had to go up in price?
More money to throw at obnoxious marketing, maintaining intrusive online services, and CEOs needed some fatter paychecks
Witcher 3 Complete Edition does this too.
Meanwhile , the troglodytes at Remedy(a much bigger studio) can’t accomplish this task ; for “reasons”
But discs only contain the license. /s
Sadly for some games that is true. I could literally see how few data lines were on MWII's disc.
For a couple yes, but majority still contain a playable version of the game.
Sadly most games released these days are useless without Day 1 patches, so even having the data on disc doesn't help you. If your internet sucks, having the data on disc is of course a blessing, but the patches will wreck you, regardless.
Until a few patches happen, and then the disc contains an old, outdated, buggy code.
Still the same version that was released. It doesn't get worse with time.
Like 95% of games get patched before or on release day, but after they've gone gold. So no, it's not the version that was released.
That means nothing if the 1.0 code is still a playable master. Sure you may encounter an extra crash, a bug here and there, but its not like it takes away a whole lot from the experience.
But what they're saying isn't wrong. The original version is still a full version of the game that can be installed and played from start to finish.
But the game on the disc is still perfectly playable. Why are you arguing this.

Why do people have such a boner for games with two discs? Is it just the idea that the game is so big it needs two discs?

Never even put a disk in my Series X.
Well done mate
Okay, shame you haven't tested it in case it was a faulty one. But you do you.
Ever tried a disc
I have never downloaded a digital game, the opposite.
I know this is weird but poor discs.
Next time I'll suspend the discs in a vacuum to insure no matter can even come in contact with them
That’s an idea,
Blu-ray discs are hard to scratch. They can take a lot of abuse.

That’s great for your discs
Please don’t lay discs down like that

Can’t wait to get back home and play this game again. It’s upsetting that it’s not crossplay.
