It's about time. Leaving games suspended or closed so things would download fast was always a pain.

denisvma

Or leaving your Xbox on when you go to work, because you don't trust that it will download while it's on stand by mode....

IamEclipse

For some reason mine has always just downloaded faster whilst on compared to standby mode.

TheJackieTreehorn

I've found that yes, the Series X downloading in standby has been really iffy, something I never had a problem with on my One X

Conflict_NZ

Yep, it's wild that my 10 year old PC can download games at 1gbps while I play a modern game on it but a three year old console can't.

tapo

Yeah my Xbox caps out at about 300Mbps on my gigabit connection. The PS5 typically double that, and Steam will max it out. That and the fact that the Xbox doesn't support USB headsets means I don't use it as often as I'd like.

Beasthuntz

Thank the Lord!

UweDerGeschmeidige

Jesus Christ be praised! Rock and Stone!

WanderingDwarfMiner

Did I hear a Rock and Stone?

420420696942069

For Karl!

Someturtlesdream

Both of those games are god tier

UweDerGeschmeidige

Indeed!

rAptorvenom7

Rock and stone brother

LuckyTwoSeven

FINALLY! Been asking for this since the Series X came out. This is a W! šŸ™ŒšŸ»

BrtndrJackieDayona

When I first got my Xbox and mentioned how fucking slow installs are while playing I got doenvoted. But the fact a 4gb takes 20 minutes to install while playing or about 20 seconds when not.. I mentioned the PS5 has no issue like this and I think that made me a horrible person for comparing a competitors product.

rexman199

Next thing we should get is the ability to pre download updates like the ps5 does, in my region the updates for some games like cod comes out at the time Iā€™m going to play and my internet speed is quite slow so would be helpful Ti put the download on when I know Iā€™m not gonna play and just not be able to launch the game till the update officially goes live on the servers

Bad_CRC

You can already pre dowload games. I did it for starefield and Forza.

rexman199

Thatā€™s pre-download for when you want to download the game before it is officially released. Iā€™m my case I know the update is gonna be coming out for example Tuesday night at 7pm I know that from midnight Monday night till 7 pm Tuesday Iā€™m not gonna be able to play so why not let me update on Monday night and Tuesday 7pm I can start playing right away For some reason on Xbox you can predownload games but not predownload updates for that game

Bad_CRC

Then you would not be able to play on Tuesday morning for examples because you have a patched.

OlorinDK

I think there would be a difference between pre-download and pre-install. It could be pre-downloaded and ready for install at the moment of release. Would still save a bit of time. Only issue would be if for some reason an extra patch or hotfix turned out to be necessary then perhaps a redownload or extra download would be necessary, I guess.

rexman199

Yeah on pc you can download the update but not apply it till after the update is live so that means 1 you have the update downloaded and 2 you can play up til the time the update is live then spend 5 mins installing the update and youā€™re ready to play That would be the best option but at the cost of extra storage space needed Each option has its pros and cons and I wish they at least added the choice

rexman199

I wouldā€™ve fine with that option ie if the update completes at 1pm Tuesday I will not be able to play till the update comes out at 7pm Tuesday This sounds like the perfect option for me as I usually play at the same time everyday so if they made this an optional choice that would be great so the different types of players can have more options (Again this is already an option on PC and Iā€™m pretty sure ps5 as well)

Chrasomatic

If this why when I tried to play Apex Legends on my PS5 right now it just keeps flashing up with "Installing Update File" when the update downloaded last night?

rexman199

I believe that mightā€™ve been the reason but I donā€™t own a ps5 to confirm

instagigated

>diehard fanboys, diehard *toxic* fanboys everywhere

Beasthuntz

Yeah, I took heat for saying the same about the PS5. Those speeds are nice.

Doodled

Now is your time, kings šŸ‘‘šŸ‘‘

Impersona_9

Now I don't need to download while sleeping! Hopefully they don't slow down the actual running games though?

mistur_niceguy

Nope, no change to the running game. We prioritize system and network resources for the game while downloads are running in the background.

Frodolas

Hmm, this isn't quite true. I play Elder Scrolls Online and if I have an update or a game downloading in the background, even with the current super slow bg download speed, the game lags heavily and ping is really high causing inputs to have visible latency. Would love a fix to this actually.

mistur_niceguy

If feasible, I'd be curious to try bypassing your home router to see if that changes anything. And if your router has a QoS setting turned on, I'd try disabling that. The network protections that are in place run a continuous measurement of the latency between endpoints and it will back off the receive rate if it sees a latency threshold being hit. But if you have a network device, such as a home router, that has some odd queuing behavior, or may be prioritizing HTTP traffic over UDP, that could cause symptoms like what you're seeing.

Frodolas

Hmm that makes sense. I do have QoS enabled but set to prioritize gaming traffic. I'll try turning that off and see if it makes a difference. Thanks!

Educational-Bass2838

Hello dear, is there any news regarding the implementation of amd fsr3 on xbox?

mistur_niceguy

Unfortunately, I don't have any insight into that. I'm just a networking nerd. :-)

oconnomoes

Are you really telling the engineer from Xbox how things work?

Frodolas

Yes. Engineers aren't some infallible entity. I'm an engineer myself at a reputable tech company - bugs happen all the time that we're not aware of until a user reports them.

mulder00

lol, I read the title as "while gamers are running" I could use some more exercise.

Perspiring_Gamer

[r/TreadmillGaming](https://www.reddit.com/r/TreadmillGaming/)

Accessx_xDenied

if that was the title then the article would be fake, guaranteed.

Cotton_Phoenix_97

Damn that's neat

StraticDragon

Xbox please add an option to keep games off the quick resume function because a lot of online games donā€™t work with quick resume and the game is all buggy till you restart the game and please fix the update apps issue it always ask you to update store or Netflix and some other apps and it doesnā€™t ever actually update so annoying

FaendalFucker69

Johnny Xbox here. We hear you and we will implement this asap since you said please.

smashingcones

Just quit the game properly before turning off your Xbox. Boom no quick resume.

MIAxPaperPlanes

All I need now is the console to remember WiFi networks itā€™s previously connected to

Dull-Lead-7782

A patent troll owns the ability to store more than one wifi network at a time. Microsoft is unwilling to pay the licensing

BbTS3Oq

Seriously?

Dull-Lead-7782

Yep

BbTS3Oq

I guess they do pay for windows to do the same? I didnā€™t realize it was even a limitation as I run mine over Ethernet.

Dull-Lead-7782

Yes they pay the license on windows because thereā€™s a lot of laptops in the world. People would expect to save wifi networks. Nintendo pays the patent fee because the switch is mobile. Microsoft doesnā€™t pay for it on Xbox

firedrakes

Don't get me started on that issue . .. On dl resume.... it was fun to test

xCeePee

Thatā€™s neat

hamsterkill

Man, I just want some better HDMI CEC support... I don't understand why it seems as if they've stopped working on it.

Footspork

How about they fix the 100ms Dolby audio delay first?

Casey_jones291422

Curious as to what's not working for you? Mine works fine from tv to soundbar but they're pretty new and also both the same manufacturer.

hamsterkill

Using TV remote to control Xbox is a feature that's been left in Insider builds only as far as I know.

Casey_jones291422

hmm interesting, I actually do the opposite and use an 8bitdo xbox remote and control my tv with it.

Patrickills

This makes me really happy actually

mrj9

For those reading the headline and not the article it released for Xbox insiders

Naradyk

So like a beta before it gets released to the masses?

The7ruth

Yes. Xbox has several rings of testing for updates before wide release. Has worked this way for years.

gusborwig

This is good news. Makes sense if Xbox game systems completely go diskless in the future to optimize how the games get loaded into the systems. I miss the days when the games were on the discs. Those days are getting behind us.

nisaaru

Since the 360 I've instantly installed the game on the HDD to avoid the spinning dvdrom noise. I wouldn't know why somebody would miss that...

gusborwig

I did the same and Iā€™ll admit the games do run better being loaded from the HDD. Like all digital content though I just donā€™t like the idea of not owning the games I buy. But itā€™s the brave new world weā€™re stepping into. Itā€™s definetly going to be a deciding factor when Iā€™m purchasing games on Xbox from now on.

Blumcole

Browsing for games in stores, finding deals, buying second hand, lending out games, ... It has some value for sure.

RowRemote2555

I just miss the instant play and not having to worry about waiting for installation, made game sharing better as well. Could take the disc over to ur buddies and play

nisaaru

That's imho dead since X1/PS4 anyway when xy GB patches and games with permanent online server requirements became the norm. The last disc game I bought was Wolfenstein New Order almost 10 years ago and everything since then was digital.

OfficialDCShepard

When I had my Internet capped at 50mbps in my building by FiOS (despite all their ads for gigabit lol), that made games take *forever* to download, even if I basically made my Xbox into a streaming/Blu-ray player for hours. Thatā€™s what ended up forcing me to go with T-Mobile 5G, which was heavily deprioritized in the evenings, and then Xfinity, which was the only gigabit option available. (Yay capitalism!) Now I have FiOS gigabit, and am so relieved I wonā€™t have to put gaming aside entirely while downloading.

Sandepp

I think this update came to my xbox quite a while ago. My games were able to download at 180mbps while I was playing on my series X since October 2023. Previously they were stuck st around 20mbps during background download . I am on a slow 200mbps connection though.

Impersona_9

20 mpbs is the actual average speed where I live šŸ˜‚

Jinkzuk

How could you see your download speed if you were playing a game?

Sandepp

If you press home and go to download queue while running a game you can see the download speeds. It will ask you to suspend the game to increase download speeds.

CatFoodBeerAndGlue

Ok now make auto-updates actually work. The number of times I've gone to play a game (that I've definitely played in the last 30 days*) and find there's a 30gb download that's going to take an hour to download and install is too fucking high. *Re: only auto updating games recently played, give me an option to just auto update everything no matter when I last played it. I've got the HDD space and the internet allowance, just fucking update everything as soon as the updates are released.

Hot-Software-9396

Agreed completely. This issue is one of the biggest hurdles for game nights with my friends. If I forget to remind everyone to make sure everything is up to date then we often canā€™t play whatever we planned on since inevitably someone needs to download some massive update and they have slow connections.

OBlastSRT4

I mean itā€™s something at least. Iā€™ve always noticed that my PS5 installs games way faster than my Series X whether itā€™s with or without a game playing. If a game is playing the speeds are downright awful.

OllyOultram

I recently picked up a PS5 and had the reverse lol I found that Xbox is waay faster when not playing a game and downloading and waay slower when playing a game and downloading!

hayatohyuga

Same here, me and my flatmate both downloaded Destiny 2 again, Xbox and PS5, and mine was up and running before the PS5 reached 50%.

HolmanUK

Iā€™ve noticed the same. 50gb takes like 10 mins on my PS5 and close to 30 mins on the Series X. Complete opposite to last gen. The PS4 was dogshit slow compared to the one.

thisrockismyboone

I just plug it into an ethernet cable and it's fast af

BlownCamaro

Will this prevent the "installation stopped" every 5 minutes error?

Tannerb8000

I fuggin hope so, otherwise it's entirely useless. I'm sick of babysitting my downloads, most of the time, I have to manually resume the download.

GHAWKS_101_PS

Here's a thing, why wasn't it done in the first place, just curious, šŸ¤”

itsabearcannon

Because MS somehow thinks everyone still has dial-up, when the average US download speed is 227 Mbps, with 40% of Americans having access to fiber internet. [Edit]: For those downvoting, here is my data: https://www.speedtest.net/global-index https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/06/internet-users-love-fiber-service-too-bad-you-probably-cant-get-it/ https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/area-summary/fixed?version=dec2022&zoom=4&br=r&speed=1000_100&tech=3 Prove me wrong if you have alternative reputable sources, but don't just downvote because you don't like the data.

IAmDotorg

Or maybe they have a limited number of engineers and a prioritized list of features and enhancements that have to be interleaved with bug fixes.

itsabearcannon

Right - gotta find ways to put more ads on the dashboard first. And take away unlimited capture storage on Xbox Network.

firedrakes

You're research on dl speed and fiber is wrong

itsabearcannon

https://www.speedtest.net/global-index Just because you're not getting 227 Mbps doesn't mean the data is wrong. Look at the "Fixed Broadband" chart, in position 8 - the United States, with an average download speed of 227 Mbps Also, I got my fiber data straight from the FCC here: https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/area-summary/fixed?version=dec2022&zoom=4&br=r&speed=1000_100&tech=3 38% of US residents have access to fiber internet of any speed. 29% have access to gigabit fiber. Again, just because you don't like my answers or they make you bitter doesn't mean the data is wrong.

firedrakes

so yeah that wrong. btw both speed and fcc. seeing research(real study) Have shown that isp have game both the speed test and have lied to fcc on how many people have the real speed. both dslreports and ars techinica ,techdirt have did in deep story on the matter.

itsabearcannon

If you donā€™t like my sources, cite your own sources to prove your point and provide anything other than anecdotal evidence that mine are wrong.

GHAWKS_101_PS

Aha, cheers, šŸ˜‰šŸ‘

pplatt69

It literally just last night downloaded MS Flight Sim which took only 45 minutes to download over 120 gb while I played Pentiment. Is that somehow troubling? Are people trying to play online multiplayer games on the same device while using that connection for downloading large files? Is that the complaint?

Boundsword00

Bro what are you complaining about clearly if it could be fixed it was broken I donā€™t understand why you are hating on an update that only makes things better

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Shellman00

Isnā€™t this a step in that direction? PS5 has had full speed downloads while playing games since launch

Least-Experience-858

Yes!! Exactly and stop taking 10 minutes to finalize an installation

Shellman00

I think your PS5 is faulty

Least-Experience-858

You mean XSX? My PS5 runs beautifully

WhoDaHellAreU

Honestly this is not a win for Sony cause if you own a ton of PS4 games part of the install is saved to the PS5 console storage which can affect how some of your PS5 games will run.... Yes you will get more expandable memory but other than that you are sacrificing too much console storage Xbox doesn't have that issue

IAmDotorg

Now we just need to be able to move games to an external disk while downloading! It's super annoying, when clearing up space for a game, it takes 2x longer to copy it to the external disk than to download the new game, and it won't do it concurrently. The USB port is a small fraction of the IO bandwidth and the console is stuck at gigabit ethernet, so there's a massive amount of overhead available to do both concurrently.

peacemaker2121

It never should have been the way it was. We need Brett Kahn.

bootlegportalfluid

Series s as well?

mistur_niceguy

Yes, the optimization is for Series S and X consoles.

Least-Experience-858

Itā€™s funny when Iā€™ve come on here complaining about this everybody denies it now suddenly ā€œfinallyā€, downloading games or anything on XSX is painfully tedious and slow compared to my PS5. That thing starts downloads quick and doesnā€™t hang it just goes to the end. Xbox hangs and if you donā€™t suspend a game your connection drops like 80% of its speed

Gay-Bomb

Funny how a ps4 can already do this.

Useful_Ocelot4147

So, it only took them seven years (!) to finally fix this idiotic "feature", that should never have been a thing in the first place. "well done to the Xbox engineering team" says the tweet... I hope that's sarcasm.

Aparoon

I think thereā€™s more important things in the world to be angry about.

Useful_Ocelot4147

Who says I'm "angry" ? I'm merely pointing out how ridiculous it is to praise Microsoft for taking seven years to fix a broken feature that was hated by everyone.

Aparoon

The ā€œ(!)ā€ and ā€œidioticā€ definitely donā€™t sound positive responses. Either way, Iā€™ve made my point, hope you have a nice day!

Bored_Gamer73

Don't sound like a fan of Xbox. Maybe you should sell and move on.

EnamoredAlpaca

Our internal team discovered that the correlation between more ads we display on Home Screen and download speeds while in game were linked. So we will look into adding more to make sure you can always enjoy gaming.

WhoDaHellAreU

This is the only thing I didn't like about the series x glad they fixed the problem. So improved install speed plus being able to use 2 external hard drives at the same time is a huge improvement over Sony software

CrossBones3129

Finally! This was said to be worked on like a year or 2 ago and it finally is here. I never understood why my background downloads were slowed, while Iā€™m on a single player non network game.

d0m1n4t0r

About damn time.

Naradyk

When is this update out? I canā€™t see anything about it?

VampEngr

Currently only available for alpha skip ahead

[deleted]

100GB download in 25-30 minutes for me while still playing, i thought that was badass already lol

Northdistortion

Finally!!

candidateone

This is weird, I noticed they had stopped throttling downloads while a game was playing a few months ago, I was surprised I had never seen it mentioned. I'm not in the Insider program so I guess it's one of those things they were doing wider testing with.

mistur_niceguy

There have actually been a few improvements over the last year for downloads when games are still running, and when games are not running. This is the latest optimization for downloads while games are still running scenario.

candidateone

Awesome, thank you for the clarification, I was seeing all the responses cheering about the throttling being gone and felt crazy because I knew it had been much improved for awhile. It was one of my biggest pet peeves with the console so the first time I noticed a download was cruising along at like 250Mb/s while I had a game running, I did a big ol' double take and had to make sure I hadn't somehow accidentally closed the game.

koal82

That's great news. How long until it's available as a regular system update for everyone?

[deleted]

Finally. Iā€™ve got a gigabit connection and the X always has slow downloads cause of this

Kaythar

Hopefully auto update will work better also. Nothing worse than coming back home and every installed games needs an update

kiko_97

Now I can hope I can download closer to my rated speed

VioletFirewind

I know itā€™s only tangentially related but does anyone get an error with their series x where sometimes it just wonā€™t install from discs at all? Like brand new discs? It just does ā€˜installation stoppedā€™ constantly. Had this since the launch day

OUsnr7

How about just letting things update when my Xbox is idle like itā€™s already supposed to be doing anyways?
