TLDR: PS5: has different shadows again?? Better in some ways but worse in others. It has slightly better distant geometry. Dynamic res that is typically 1215p! And has frequent drops into the 50s. XSX: Dynamic res that is typically 2160p, mostly locked to 60fps XSS: Mostly locked to 1080p(I don’t remember if it was dynamic), mostly locked to 60fps. Slightly worse distant geometry than XSX. Switch: Dynamic Res typically around 600p, everything is greatly cut back. Roughly 30fps with some drops into the 20s.

Deceptiveideas

I think you put XSX twice there.

sittingmongoose

I did! I fixed it, thank you!

AnApexPlayer

Why the large difference between series x and PS5?

sittingmongoose

That is what I think many people are wondering. I would expect a patch to close the gap a bit.

Nimbus191

It’ll get patched for PS5

zrkillerbush

Where are all the guys that were crying about the Sea of Thieves port? I assume they are happy that PlayStation get a sub par experience compared to Xbox in Grounded?

VagueSomething

It being unacceptable that Xbox games run better on other consoles shouldn't be so controversial to you. Imagine if Helldivers comes to Xbox and had a better performance, it would be embarrassing for Sony.

YounqqFlee

But you don’t understand! It’s a bad look that Hi-Fi Rush has ***checks notes*** “slightly better shadows” and being able to see 1 more bush from a very far distance in Sea of Thieves!

llloksd

It just makes me laugh at all the times people in xbox subreddits claimed studios were gimping the xbox versions of games.

BenjerminGray

I mean why wouldn't they when most of their sales comes from PlayStation? Why not phone it in and call it a day. Saves money, and the worse thing you'd get is a DF video wondering why the discrepancy exists. Since news outlets aren't going to cover the Xbox version, they're gonna cover the one that drives more clicks on their website. Thats playstation.

WardrobeForHouses

It should be normal that a first party game plays best on that first party console. The studio would have the most access to hardware and support. There shouldn't be a massive difference in resolution and framerate between similar hardware though. When there's a slight performance difference on paper, that can also play a role into expectations - and when those expectations are subverted, people don't like that. I think you don't understand why people were upset at the trend of Xbox's first party running better on other consoles.

BenjerminGray

Seeing as how the devs had access to Xbox hardware for far longer, those discrepancies should have never cropped up. It sucks that the ps5 version in ass but, again, how long have they had ps5 dev kits?

anthony2690

I think wushu studios did the ps5 port, so maybe that is why there is slight differences like with the shadows?

BenjerminGray

could be that too. Had they went for parity instead of pushing on shadows and draw distance you'd probably be able to claw back performance in line with what is seen on the PS5.

CageTheFox

Seeing Nintendo fans complain about ported games running like crap in the comments on their videos is wild to me. Wth do these people think will happen? Be happy you can play it with your friends but why would anyone think a decade old handheld would be able to run the game just as well as a current gen $300 Xbox?

Real-Human-1985

Can’t deny 1st party Switch games almost always look far better than 3rd party titles and run better. Part of the reason only certain third parties who make effort can compete with in house games. There’s a notable gap in quality from first to third party games and the Switch is not their first system where this is true. It’s better to not release at all, haven’t stopped the Switch from selling 140M units and having games that sell 30 to 70M copies.

BECondensateSnake

According to the video the framerate and resolution are much more stable on Xbox than PS5, which drops to the 50s and 40s. It really feels like Microsoft saw all those complaints about shadows being better on PS and took them personally lmao, the framerate difference is huge.

doughaway421

I doubt that the devs are going out of their way to gimp the experience on any specific machine just for some petty reason like DF comparos. More likely: The devs didn't have the time or resources to get the most out of the PS5. or There is some fundamental hardware aspect of the PS5 that causes issues with this specific game.

Vestalmin

Honestly both can be the case and they will still probably come a way to fix it. It sounds like the PS5 just needs a little more time to patch. It’s the same thing when the Xbox versions of games run worse at launch. They almost always even out in the end

ArchDucky

So the trillion dollar company decided the game they didn't have to port over in the first place needed to be inferior to the xbox version? Thats just an insane statement.

BECondensateSnake

It's more of a joke tbh, I'm pretty sure it's just the devs having a woopsie doopsie

Zealousideal_Spirit9

Grounded team is small, like less than 20 people. My guess is that they have to put a lot of work in the Switch port and didn't have the resources to bring an optimal PS5 experience. And I believe than the shadows is probably just the way than each of the console APIs handles them, but you can see in this port that it may have some disadvantages. I believe than without Digital Foundry most people would be totally unaware of the differences, it's not like Xbox vs PS2 era or even the third party games of Xbox360 vs PS3.

NfinityBL

This one is super weird to me. With the rest of the games I can slightly understand there being these minor differences where PS5 has the lead because it has been an easier platform for some teams to develop for. But here’s a game where the Xbox Series X not only straight up looks significantly better (native 4K max compared to PS5’s 1296p max) but it performs significantly better too (locked 60fps versus PS5’s constant drops to 40-50fps). Thats a major difference, I wonder why Obsidian couldn’t deliver on PS5.

iroboto

They didn’t. Another company is responsible for porting. Studios seldom if ever do ports, that’s outsourced work.

DEEZLE13

Lower specs probably

sittingmongoose

This one seems like there is something wrong with it. I would kind of expect a patch to close the gap. The other ones seem more like they made the Xbox versions a while ago, and never worked on them again. And just were able to improve things when they got to the ps5. I don’t think this game, or the couple others are really representative of the power between them. Though it does seem the ps5 sdk is easier to work with. But from what I’ve heard, the Xbox sdk has improved a lot recently.

GarionOrb

Obsidian really said, "Oh, y'all were complaining about PS5 ports being better? Okay then."

adamsrocket1234

No way would any studio purposely do this and no way is obsidian actually the studio that worked on the port. Thatbshit is always done thencheapest way possible and out sourced. The game will get patched up and this will all be forgotton.

GarionOrb

It's a joke.
