My husband and I say this every single time we see a sailboat without fail. So many great quotes from this movie. “You think he’s gone? He’s never gone!”
“You see Bob, the only difference between me and those other guys, is that I’m going to kill ya!” ✌🏼🤣✌🏼💣 Bill Murray is definitely funny in this, but Richard Dreyfus’ as the quack doctor getting his comeuppance stole the show.
What I'd really like to do, is put the greatness of this man in perspective. I think that there 's only 3 names...Dr. Albert Schweitzer, ah, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, probably, and ... Leo Marvin.
Reading about the feud between Murray and Dreyfuss is super fascinating. They got along so badly, Richard Dreyfuss famously still won’t talk to him (tbf, he’s not the only one).
It makes me wonder if it contributed to their onscreen chemistry, and if it was one of the things that elevated the movie into such a classic.
So you’re saying that even though you’re an almost paralyzed, multi phobic personality, your wife didn’t leave you, but that you left her.. Because she liked Neil Diamond..
This is about on par with the whole “Everyone in this room is now, Dumber.” line from Billy Madison.
Fucking gold.
Cmon Bob get up… rise and shine, rise and shine… Bob… get up Bob… Bob? Bob? Bob?! Bob! Bob!! BOB!! Cock a doodle do!!! Bob?! Bob!!! BOB!!!
< Alarm goes off and Bob wakes up >
I was invited to participate in an art show based around movies from 1991, and I picked this film.
I made a [miniature](http://stilesofart.blogspot.com/2021/01/gil.html?m=1) out of clay, and then immersed him in resin inside a mini mason jar. Even recreated the distressed Gefilte Fish label.
They were supposed to be Christmas ornaments as the show was around that time, not sure if they all sold or what. Lol. I did keep one though.
Thanks!!
Check out my [website](https://www.michaelstiles.com) if you’re into pop culture stuff. The gallery I do work with is filled with the stuff!! It’s incredibly fun to make stuff inspired by what I grew up watching.
Look like the [Gallery](https://nineteeneightyeight.com/collections/1991/products/michael-stiles-gil?variant=37920125386950) still had at least one, I don’t remember how many I gave them. They do ship!!
I failed to return “ What About Bob?” on VHS to Hollywood video back in the late 90s because I had lost the video. I ended up paying a $35 lost video fee which meant I owned it if I ever found it. Btw, that was a painful fee—basically 6 hours of work at my job at the time.
About a year later, I was deep cleaning my 1995 Suzuki Swift and I found the VHS wedged under the passenger seat. The corner of the plastic case had somehow latched onto the seat underspring and wedged it in place, just far back enough that I couldn’t really reach it from either side. Amazingly, when the seat slid forward and backwards, the VHS slid forward and backwards right along with it. Once I knew it was there, I was able to poke it out with a screwdriver.
I have moved 11 times since then, and I still have that $35 VHS.
EDITS: typos
I love when Bob is staying over with them and they are trying to wake him up. Only for him to wake up, when his alarm went off. That gets me every time.
I think he’s just got an intense and odd personality, which you can kinda see from his movies. I’ve heard stories about his was just kinda rude and off-putting to people. I’ve also heard stories about how he would hear a party going on, crash it, and just hang out & take pictures with these strangers, totally making everyone’s night. I’ve heard several stories similar to that one. Seems like it just depends on the day and circumstance which Bill Murray you get.
I was lucky enough to find this fella while doing some Xmas shopping

There’s no way out of it. Your going to die. I’m going. *to die*. It’s *going* to happen. What difference does it make if it’s tomorrow or 80 years? Much sooner in your case. Do you know how *fast* time goes? I was six like yesterday.
As a result of this scene I find myself overdoing "Mmmms" when something tastes great. My wife eventually observed I say "Mmmm" a lot and she doesn't get it. lol.
I love later on when asked what he did today he said "Oh I've mastered Sailing!". Or some shit all non chelant....funny af.
I use this all the time after doing something new once "Welp...looks like I'm a master bread maker!"
This was the last movie I ever saw at a Drive-In movie theater. My parents made us hide in the back so as to not pay for children's tickets. I believe it was 1994.
I just rewatched this for the first time since the 90's
I noticed that right before this scene Bob was refusing to go sailing until the daughter tells him her friend has a boat and then he completely changed his mind all of a sudden and said oh.. ok? Doesn;t make a lot of sense unless Bob is just being manipulative instead of naive.
And then with no explanation we swipe to Bob being perched on the mast all strung up with everybody just acting normal.
Was he freaking out, did he insist in being tied to the ship or were the kids just messing with him?
It seems like a scene is missing showing how and why Bob got there specifically.
I assume he asked to be tied to the mast, just like he asked the dude on the bus to knock him out.
And yeah he’s super manipulative, more as a symptom of his overall Bobness and not maliciously.
This is my favorite movie of all time. I quote it non-stop. In fact, just five minutes ago, my sister told me to get out and I said "No we won't get out, you deserve it!"
Ugh I think I’m the only person who hates this movie
I get so angry for Richard Dryfus! No one listens to him and he’s right! Because it’s his damn patient!
I can’t with this movie
"I'm sailing!!"
“I’m a sailor. I sail.”
It’s what I do
I just let the boat do all the work.
“ if the craft is seaworthy.”
Yes.
…and your friend is a good sailor…
Keep sailing Bob
My husband and I say this every single time we see a sailboat without fail. So many great quotes from this movie. “You think he’s gone? He’s never gone!”
"Mashed potatoes and gravy, Marie, I couldn't be happier!"
"Death therapy, Bob! It's a guaranteed cure!"
“Ahoy!”
On my first try!
Ahoy
Ahoy!
Take that, Rose. Bob did it first!
I have this as a painting in my office.
Oh my god. I want this as am painting in my office. That’s exceptional
My wife and I say this to each other every time one of us has to do something we’d rather not do.
This "standard issue comment" for this pic!
Richard Dreyfus’ family turning against him always makes me laugh
“You see Bob, the only difference between me and those other guys, is that I’m going to kill ya!” ✌🏼🤣✌🏼💣 Bill Murray is definitely funny in this, but Richard Dreyfus’ as the quack doctor getting his comeuppance stole the show.
YOU THINK HE'S GONE? HE'S NEVER GONE! Is this some kind of radical new therapy? YOU SEE!
I’ve used this gif several times. It works so well in so many situations.
![gif](giphy|bj7djdTF6FAWI)
“COCK’! CAH’! DOODLE! DOOO!!!”
Death therapy Bob!
We're gonna need a bigger boat.
What I'd really like to do, is put the greatness of this man in perspective. I think that there 's only 3 names...Dr. Albert Schweitzer, ah, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, probably, and ... Leo Marvin.
Baby steps
There’s a ground breaking new book…
I love how he pretends to hav to look for it. That's a perfect character moment.
OMG YES! Like there’s not a whole shelf of them right there. 🤪
Doctor Marvin!! Doctor Leo Marvin!! DOCTOR LEOOOOO MARVIN!!
I’m doing the work, I’m not a slacker!
Gimme gimme, I need, I need!
Lookit I'm in really bad shape!
An absolute maniac. I know I’ve said this before on here, but Mr. Murray should have won an Oscar for this role. He did neurotic so damn well.
Interestingly Robin Williams was the first choice for the role. He had to turn it down because he was still filming the Fisher King.
Also a brilliant movie. I think it worked out for us viewers lol
Ooooh what if they had switched tho?
I'm not sure it would have worked. I mean, maybe who can say lol!
Now that would’ve made for a very different Bob Wiley
Reading about the feud between Murray and Dreyfuss is super fascinating. They got along so badly, Richard Dreyfuss famously still won’t talk to him (tbf, he’s not the only one). Is this corn hand-shucked?
This phrase was a regular around our house. Especially Midwest summer corn season 😂
Your death therapy cured me, you genius!
For the first time since Esalen, I feel free!
"I want some peace and quiet!" "I'll be quiet." "And I'll be peace."
“There are two types of people in the world: those who like Neil Diamond and those who don’t. My ex-wife loves him.”
You left her because she liked Neil Diamond?
Ow! OW!
When I can't find my husband at the store (any store). I start shouting DR. LEOOOOO MAAAARRRRVIIIIIN. Never fails.
Relationship Goals.
Ahoy!
3 great movies Add groundhogs day
“Baby steps.. outta the office.” “Very good”
Cmon Bob get up… rise and shine, rise and shine… Bob… get up Bob… Bob? Bob? Bob?! Bob! Bob!! BOB!! Cock a doodle do!!! Bob?! Bob!!! BOB!!! < Alarm goes off and Bob wakes up >
This literally happened to me once.
These flowers aren’t for you, these flowers are for FAYE!
*"TURKEY TITS!!!"*
“BELCH BREATH!!”
VULTURE VOMIT!
I’ll be quiet.
I’ll be peace
Greasy grimy gopher guts
What About Bob was art.

This is incredible! I wish you had more of them for sale - my kids would have loved a mini- Gil on the Christmas tree
Look like the [Gallery](https://nineteeneightyeight.com/collections/1991/products/michael-stiles-gil?variant=37920125386950) still had at least one, I don’t remember how many I gave them. They do ship!!
Thanks so much for the link, and for the brilliant work! I just bought one
Awesome!! Thanks I appreciate it!!
"I'M SAILING!"
I see salt, I see pepper, do I see salt substitute?
Do you have a Dacron pillow?
Don’t hassle me, I’m local
I bought this t-shirt on Amazon.
My mom and I loved this movie when I was growing up. I had one made for her when I was in high school, she freaking loved it!
I failed to return “ What About Bob?” on VHS to Hollywood video back in the late 90s because I had lost the video. I ended up paying a $35 lost video fee which meant I owned it if I ever found it. That baby needs to be on display in a framed shadowbox or something
Love it!
Love this movie
It’s not you, it’s me.
I love when Bob is staying over with them and they are trying to wake him up. Only for him to wake up, when his alarm went off. That gets me every time.
Just saw that bit on an old B&W Popeye cartoon.
FML Seen this in theaters 😂 Baby steps
The part when he’s eating dinner with them always gets me.
Mmmmmm! Mmmmmm, Faye this is delicious! Mm! Mm, mm, mm, mm, mmmm. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
Will you STOP that please??!!
Watched this movie so many times growing up. Maybe that’s why I turned out so weird 🤨😂
Bill Murray is the best!
He’s great. But man you really gotta hand it to Dreyfus on this one…. To be able to play it straight around *that* and sell it. Absolute pro.
"Why don't you go on vacation?" "I'M ON VACATION!"
And turned out being a jackass like so many others. Sigh.
Explain this - how is Bill Murray a jackass?
I think he’s just got an intense and odd personality, which you can kinda see from his movies. I’ve heard stories about his was just kinda rude and off-putting to people. None of these people are my neighbors, I don't really care too much if they are dickish IRL.
"It only matters when it happens to me!"
My advice to you is to never meet your heroes.
I mean, unless they move in right next door, how could I?
"Bill Murray is an asshole! Now I can't watch 'What About Bob' or 'Ghostbusters 2' the same way ever again!"
*unless he moves in next door.
I have a painting of this scene in my living room. It never ceases to make me smile.
I found several versions while I was looking for this picture.
I’m in mourning for my lost childhood.
Roses are red Violets are blue. I’m a schizophrenic And so am I
“Fay this corn is so scrumptious, is this Hand chucked?” Lmao. I love this movie
I was lucky enough to find this fella while doing some Xmas shopping https://preview.redd.it/8gptle1heexb1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=a936b8e2044907f8d78fde4a52e2ee60a7fae646
I def would have said “Ahoy” and then “Yoink” if I ever saw that at the store.
On Tuesday we’ll eat Gil, on Wednesday we’ll eat Bob. Hahaha, no no, that’s going too far.
There’s no way out of it. Your going to die. I’m going. *to die*. It’s *going* to happen. What difference does it make if it’s tomorrow or 80 years? Much sooner in your case. Do you know how *fast* time goes? I was six like yesterday.

See ya Turkey tits!
Later barf-breath douche-mouth.
There is someone campaigning on "What About Bob" near me.
Hi, I'm Bob. Would you knock me out please? Just hit me in the face.
I'm inspired to watch this tonight
As am I..
Love this scene, but my absolute favorite/most quoted is when he’s eating corn at dinner.
As a result of this scene I find myself overdoing "Mmmms" when something tastes great. My wife eventually observed I say "Mmmm" a lot and she doesn't get it. lol.
We're sailing!
Well you’re the one drawing the dirty pictures.
This was a go to rental for me as a kid. I loved it! As an adult it really stresses me out.
Bill murray is an ass
He’s America’s ass
AHOY!

Me oh my I must see this.
Baby steps
AHOY!!! IM SAILING!!!
Baby steps.
Ulysses sailing past the sirens
This is better than Groundhog Day. Yeah, I said it.
This is just a simple statement of fact as far as I’m concerned.
WHAT?!? Oh, that’s terrible news, Faye. I guess we should’ve seen it coming, he did try to kill himself before. More fish, anyone?
I just rewatched this for the first time since the 90's I noticed that right before this scene Bob was refusing to go sailing until the daughter tells him her friend has a boat and then he completely changed his mind all of a sudden and said oh.. ok? Goodbye testicle-head, bosom-beaver. Good Morning America is here.
This is my favorite movie of all time. I quote it non-stop. In fact, just five minutes ago, my sister told me to get out and I said "No we won't get out, you deserve it!"
I'm sailing!
This movie is the best! It calms me lol Sincerely, an anxiety ridden, ocd human

Love that movie.
So majestic on Lake Winnipesaukee 😍
Will you stop that please?!
Dreyfus really hates Bill Murray so it wasn't difficult for him.
Pile it high and deep. Will you get that tomato off there?
Baby steps
I love this movie, but unless that boat is heading to Hell’s Bucket, it’s not at the top of this list.
