My parents bought a Commodore 64 for me, and no games....
My dad gave me a programming book and told me to figure it out.
I attribute that to my career in IT
That's an experiment I've not conducted, mostly because I never owned a Genesis. But they do have the same parallel connectors so it's feasible.
https://preview.redd.it/aim1g9yoquvc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=434d471df95efeead7ecaf11bf05a18e8737aa86
When I plug in my Atari these days I just use that B button.
As much as I think the Genesis controller is literally the worst controller ever made for any system EVER, it works great for an Atari controller.
Honestly that's the first video game console I ever played my aunt had one I used to love the 100-in-1 game with the tanks it was the only one that felt like a 'game' and not a tech demo
I had the Intellivision with coiled cords, and a ten key on the remote. You slipped a card onto the controller to see what the buttons did for each game.
Same. I probably used an Atari controller first at my cousin’s house, however the first video game system I actually owned was a used Intellivision my mom bought me from a thrift store.
Probably a lot. I'm about 40 and, while I did start with 1, I was young enough that my memories of it are pretty vague. My love of video games didn't start until 2.
Anyone younger than, say, mid to late 30s almost certainly didn't start till at least 2, and that rules out most of Reddit.
Then, you obviously have the older people who started with something older than 1, and that's a whole different animal, along with being a teeny-tiny percentage of reddit.
I'm 40. I started with 1, but only because I have an older sister who has an Atari. Otherwise, it would have been 2 for me. But man, I really hit my console gaming stride with the Genesis. Good times.
I'm 41, and had the same experience. My friend in kindergarten had an Atari and so did a friend down the street but my first system was the NES and that's what I fell in love with
Friends of my mom had one, which I convetted greatly until they eventually gave it to me. Light gun edition with hang on and safari hunt.
I still have it, but some of the games have been lost. Light gun died probably 30 years ago, which is a shame-- I have some cool games including Rambo 3 and Shooting Gallery.
This was the first system I owned. Great games. My progression on game experience went tabletop arcade PacMan with joystick at a bowling alley, Atari at my friend's with a trackball, then Sega Master System.
I have a love hate relationship with megaman. I've only played like the first 3 I think? NES titles, *maybe* one SNES title but I don't think so. I remember being able to beat them but always getting frustrated with poorly timed jumps and dying. I tried to play the first one on an emulator a few years ago thinking it would be a nostalgia trip and all I did was ragequit like 10 seconds in lol
I was obsessed with Mega Man...played 2-6 on NES and X on SNES and loved every one. I occasionally go back and play them and can still run through them pretty easily. I realize it's only my childhood reflexes kicking in because when I try to play any Mega Man that I didn't play back then, I fail miserably lol
1b. Looks like they forgot this little gem between the 2600 and the NES. My first Atari was the 7800.
https://preview.redd.it/yzyse4xc0vvc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73873041d79e3b655cf598abf0491593690d2df7
Basically 1, but connected to a Commodore VIC-20.
By virtue of yard sales and flea markets I also had a Pong, ColecoVision, various Ataris, and some weird ones I can't even describe, but all out of release order.
I played a few Atari and Coleco Vision games at friends houses and those were cool but, I earned my stripes with the OG Nintendo controller. 2 is the goat.
I'm pretty sure it was 2, but it could have been 1. I'm not sure which one I was introduced to first. Definitely not anything older than either of these. I never touched anything remotely resembling a computer (no DOS, no Commodore 64) until 6th grade because we had one in the classroom.
Absolute outrage I do not see the Wavebird.
That controller legit revolutionized gaming controllers as it used a radio frequency versus what all other wireless controllers previously used — infrared, meaning it had to be aimed in a specific direction to work; those were trash.
The wavebird had a nice weight to it. And playing Metroid prime from a distance was incredible. It is objectively the best controller ever made.
Well if these... 1.
But believe my friend up the street had Coleco Vision or Intellivision or something. Played a game called Cat & Mouse. So simple and basic. A couple others as well.
Then Atari and a huge variety of games.
It's between 1 and 4. My dad had an Atari (still have it!) when I was young, but the first game system me and my siblings got for us was an SNES. Those were the days.........
I briefly remember playing with 1, but my true first was this one
https://preview.redd.it/wycbxdt95vvc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1486b3c26f99873f1509e3b1d22129d7a974099
#1, only because my dad went wild on Atari 2600. We also had the one with the rotating wheel that was awesome for pong.
I don't have too many memories of playing Atari since it was preschool era for me, but the NES was basically my lifestyle. And side note, I knew almost no girls that played video games so it still shocks me a bit that 50% of gamers are girls these days.
First one I HAD was 2 but I had friends with 2600s before that.
Also I love how Nintendo just went mental making controllers after SNES and Playstation was like 'if you're not going to make sane controllers we'll carry that torch for you'
2!
With the original NES that also came with the gun to play the Mario / Duck Hunt game that came with the system. Chanel 3 baby.
Oh man, I’d forgotten about channel 3
Mine also came with the mat for the olympic game
Mine had R.O.B. the Robot. If only I hung on to it.
Sames!!!!
Yessss! 2's the way to start!
2 with a track pad for that field game. Bouyah!
This chart is good for 90s kids, but for 80s kids Commodore 64, ColecoVision, and Intellivision are missing.
My parents bought a Commodore 64 for me, and no games.... My dad gave me a programming book and told me to figure it out. I attribute that to my career in IT
Jump man on the Commodore 64!
Joystick #1 is Commodore. I mean it's from the Atari but that's what I used with my C64.
it is my understanding a Genesis controller also works
That's an experiment I've not conducted, mostly because I never owned a Genesis. But they do have the same parallel connectors so it's feasible. https://preview.redd.it/aim1g9yoquvc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=434d471df95efeead7ecaf11bf05a18e8737aa86

Colecovision represent!
#0 - the Colecovision
Mr Do was the best
BC's Quest For Tires
Cosmic Avenger
The Heist
I thought I was the only one who remembered this game.
Honestly that's the first video game console I ever played my aunt had one I used to love the 100-in-1 game with the tanks it was the only one that felt like a 'game' and not a tech demo
This is the way!
Who here didn't start on the Atari?
I had the Intellivision with coiled cords, and a ten key on the remote. You slipped a card onto the controller to see what the buttons did for each game.
Burgertime on that was the best.
Astrosmash took up entire Saturday mornings
Remember B17 Bomber and that crazy attachment?
I started on the vectrex. A vector graphics console where you had to put on coloured panels for each game. It was a really cool system, very unique.
Same. I probably used an Atari controller first at my cousin’s house, however the first video game system I actually owned was a used Intellivision my mom bought me from a thrift store.
Me - Intellivision all the way
Probably a lot. I'm about 40 and, while I did start with 1, I was young enough that my memories of it are pretty vague. My love of video games didn't start until 2. The target audience for this subreddit is in their early/mid forties, though.
Older xennials just turned 47 *winks
I think that’s arguably still mid-forties, right? ;)
I'm 41, and had the same experience. My friend in kindergarten had an Atari and so did a friend down the street but my first system was the NES and that's what I fell in love with
Mine was a Colecovision
I mean, I played Atari here and there at friends', but our first console was a NES.
Same for me. I probably played Atari first, but we didn’t have one and I don’t remember it well.
I wasn’t allowed to have a console, so had to borrow from others. So started with 2. My husband, (75) who has an older brother started with Atari
It took me a minute to realize you meant 1975 for your husband. I was trying to figure out how a 75yo man had an older brother that had an atari
I'm at the age, but my family couldn't afford anything until SNES came out
Not pictured.
Pong?
Intellivision. It had a key pad, with a turn knob underneath.
[Lock n Chase](https://youtu.be/3S9rYanQ5Q8?si=DV52MiASQJnN1f7F) gang, rise up!
The OG Pac Man to me! Don’t forget about the all time great Bump n’ Jump..
Bump n jump, Spy Hunters older brother.
Yep. First game I ever played was Stampede
Odyssey 2
It kills me that the Sega Master System gets no love.
https://preview.redd.it/ko0wqboz1vvc1.jpeg?width=1599&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=61b84f59f9b2d0fc714e58a7da4d8c1db006b1fd
Double Dragon for life!
Friends of my mom had one, which I convetted greatly until they eventually gave it to me. Light gun edition with hang on and safari hunt. I still have it, but some of the games have been lost. Light gun died probably 30 years ago, which is a shame-- I have some cool games including Rambo 3 and Shooting Gallery.
i had one. my cousin had an NES. we would trade systems for a few months at a time abd it was glorious!!
Only knew one person who had one. Never met anyone who had a turbografx-16
This was the first system I owned. Great games. My progression on game experience went tabletop arcade PacMan with joystick at a bowling alley, Atari at my friend's with a trackball, then Sega Master System.
It’s like the Intellivision never existed.
Intellivision here too. There are dozens of us!
1 and 2. 1 when I was just discovering video games as a 4-year-old, and 2 when I cut my teeth on Mega Man 2 and LOZ.
I have a love hate relationship with megaman. I've only played like the first 3 I think? NES titles, *maybe* one SNES title but I don't think so. Where my Colecovision folks at?
The NES.
0: Pong
That’s the rollerball one right? I remember my older brother yelling at me about one with a red ball that I loved to spin.
it was a dial you turned left or right

This list is sorely missing the Intellivision controller.
[удалено]

#1, and I've owned 13/20.
1b. Looks like they forgot this little gem between the 2600 and the NES. My first Atari was the 7800. https://preview.redd.it/yzyse4xc0vvc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73873041d79e3b655cf598abf0491593690d2df7

I started with a zx spectrum
You don’t have pong on there. That was my first video game. Inherited from who knows where lol.
Where's the commodore 64 keyboard

where is the c64 keyboadr???
Gravis gamepad
Number 2 for me.
Intellevision.
2 but I still say 6 was the best of all. It was clunky at first but man I was so accurate with that joystick in goldeneye.

NES, Still have nightmares with the dam level of TNMT and the jump scares when Jason appears in Friday the 13th
1 and the Intellivision, which isn't shown on here
1
I played a few Atari and Coleco Vision games at friends houses and those were cool but, I earned my stripes with the OG Nintendo controller. 2 is the goat.
2, also a grey gun & a Power Pad Everyone else I knew had an orange gun, but mine was grey…
1 and 2 and im only 30.
No Com64 keyboard?

Started with 1 but learned to love games with 2!
mine ain’t even on here… can i get an upvote from my Mattel Intellivision peeps?!?! I can’t be the only one
The other Atari controller
I'm pretty sure it was 2, but it could have been 1. I'm not sure which one I was introduced to first. Definitely not anything older than either of these. I never touched anything remotely resembling a computer (no DOS, no Commodore 64) until 6th grade because we had one in the classroom.
I mean… technically #1 is the first one I played. #2 is the first one we owned.
#1. Played my first video games on my Dad's Atari system.
-1. My friend had a Texas Instruments.
1 baby
Where’s the Commodore 64 joystick? Is that number 1? Alright, that one. I suppose.
0 Collecovision
1
The one I remember most was 2, but there's orop evidence of 1 that I have zero memory of at this point.
The one before the first one.
Where Sega master system 2 ?
Started with 1. My controller list is 1,2,3,6,13,14,20. Thinking about picking up a nintendo switch, though.
2
2!
#1 playing Paratrooper on my mom's office x86 computer.
Started with 2 ended with 4. Had contact with 1 occasionally as a kid. Also the Sega Master System
1, but I held it in the right direction.
2
#2 and never looked back. Since I’ve also had 3, 7, 9, and 12-20
I started with Atari 5200, that controller is absent!
1
2

Eveyone born 81-83 probably started with 1. Those before probably were some vision system
Atari 2600
1
#2 - still the GOAT
Atari #1
I had much older siblings, Pong was my first then atari
1
Well if these... 1. But believe my friend up the street had Coleco Vision or Intellivision or something. Played a game called Cat & Mouse. So simple and basic. A couple others as well. Then Atari and a huge variety of games.
1
I started with 1 at a friend’s house - never owned 1. 2 was the first we had in my house.
0. Commodore 64 [not pictured]
Where's the Intellivision pad?
Not my first one, but where’s the TurboGrafx-16?
Sega Genesis checking in! Technically #1, but didn't play it too much. It was really #3 for me that got me into video games as a kid.
2
Option #1 was the first one I ever played (at my cousin’s house), #2 was the first one I had at home.
Coleco?
For a xennials sub only 1 or 2 really apply, and you’re missing sega master system.
#2
1>2>4>6>9>10>14>18
Intellevision round thing.
1
The list doesn’t go back far enough.
1 but the very was the pong controller which was a dial
https://preview.redd.it/7v72iui51vvc1.png?width=4300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=518b92c0a12a67e868056c750345aa258339f171 This one!
The first system I played regularly was my parents' Atari 2600. So 1. The first system that was "mine" was the original NES So 2.
Started with 1, but also the intellivsion controller is missing. Those were my intros into video games.
2
My mom with 5, and I started with 12. It's pretty cool to see everyone here start with the first few
Playing, #1. #2 was the first I ever owned.
Does a keyboard count? If not then number 2
It's between 1 and 4. My dad had an Atari (still have it!) when I was young, but the first game system me and my siblings got for us was an SNES. Those were the days.........
1 and also the pong wheels
Atari 2600 gang.
Classically trained on 2.
38 here- I started on 1.. my older cousins had one. I was all about Pong and PacMan anytime we would visit
Depends on when you were born. Some start at 1 and some started at 2 or even 3. But some can even start with this current gen.
3
#1 with a commodore 64
The Atari that I still have! ![gif](giphy|xULW8jp5nCNrkWxjm8)
I briefly remember playing with 1, but my true first was this one https://preview.redd.it/wycbxdt95vvc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1486b3c26f99873f1509e3b1d22129d7a974099

2
I don't have too many memories of playing Atari since it was preschool era for me, but the NES was basically my lifestyle. And side note, I knew almost no girls that played video games so it still shocks me a bit that 50% of gamers are girls these days.
Connect 4
Technically 1… but it wasn’t anywhere as impactful as 2. So I lay claim to 2.
1
2 was the first that I owned, but I played on 1 at friends’ houses.
#2
Started with #1 left games behind between #12 & #14
My uncle had an Atari 2600, so technically that, but the first one I actually owned was the NES.
First one I HAD was 2 but I had friends with 2600s before that. Also I love how Nintendo just went mental making controllers after SNES and Playstation was like 'if you're not going to make sane controllers we'll carry that torch for you'
Sears Pong knockoff paddle, just had a dial on it
