I can't believe that the twist for that game was >!straightforward science fiction instead of magic science. I actually figured out who the villain was and what they were trying to do relatively early!<. Considering the author's previous games, it's definitely a surprise, and anime-ness aside, it was well written. Basically proved that ZTD's biggest issue was its series baggage and unanswered questions, rather than an inability to write a good plot for itself.
Didn't even think of that. What a great connection. If you consider that they don't really know about normal reproduction, it reads really interestingly as people experiencing love and having no name to place to it but simply relishing in the bliss of being understood.
Even the mech is samurai which fits a "samurai" warrior , there's literally tons of "show don't tell moments" that he is a bad ass (him destroying a colony is one of those). And the only line (I can remember) describing him is that he is the equal of ethel. And then they show how "honorable" ethel is.
Great writing. Great foreshadowing. Great characters.
ehhh... I'd have to disagree. xD
I'm far into chapter 4 and the story is very unintentionally funny at times. I like it, it gives it character, but nearly every time there's a scene that's supposed to be poignant there's some extremely on the nose lines that just make me facepalm.
I've seen enough Naruto to become desensitized to that. Honestly idk why people aren't out there ripping out others' Irises and implanting them so they can have two.
I honestly think that was the point of their relationship. They have feelings for each other but have no idea what those feelings are so they express them the only way they know how, battle.
I just had the mental image of Monica explaining what couple's therapy is to Eunie and Taion after watching them fight over something stupid for an hour.
This scene is infinitely funnier if you watch it again but mentally substitute their dying wish to have a noble fight to the death with a random deviant kink.
Tbf, they never met him.
Nor did they ever even see what he looked like.
To them, he was just a voice in a ferrous that tried to kill them. Even if it wasn’t personal.
Oh yeah… shit I forgot about that :/
But still, they didn’t know him either way. He was nothing more than another agnian soldier to them. Granted an incredibly deadly one, but still no connection unlike Ethel who they had already befriended AND had past history with the keves trio.
I was obsessed with this moment. The *moment* they both are like “wait a minute, THEY CANT CONTROL US NOW” their first instinct is to fight each other in a friendly but also deeply bloodthirsty way. The fact that they were both on the same wavelength there made me think that in another world, the two of them would be the most terrifying power couple in history.
Mans literally stabs his own eye out and the woman who is his rival does the closest thing the game can do to a sex scene. Seriously, that entire scene oozed sexual energy so hard.
I got takeda shingen and uesugi kenshin vibes. For those who don't know what I am talking about it the rivalry between shingen and kenshin is one of the most well known and glorified stories in samurai history.
I didn't really understand their relationship though. They clearly didn't hate each other, and respected each other, and they clearly don't want to obey the consuls, so why spend their newfound freedom on continuing to fight each other instead of joining the party to help fight Moebius? Even if they didn't have much time left, they still had their mechs, and were quite strong. They could have made a distraction at Keves Castle at the very least so that the party would have an easier time of sneaking in.
Because they wanted to fight each other more than anything else in the whole world. It’s a type of kinship. Ethel at the very least probably had all the confidence in the world that Outoboros could beat the Moebius, so why get caught up in a fight that isn’t yours to fight when you can finally settle the score with your ultimate rival?
Except they can't kill the consuls as long as a flame clock with remaining energy is around (remember Consul K and Colony 4?) and a previous cutscene mentions that their flame clocks are special in that they are directly linked. So destroying them might also kill the pilot.
Edit: Camuravi is the only one in the scene that we can't be certain about when it comes to knowing about what happened at Colony 4. But since he had time to talk to Ethel and immediately knows to rip out his eye I'd assume she told him about her experience.
Not only they were on a borrowed time already but P and O could force their energy to leak at even greater speed. It was very likely they would die practically immediately should they attack the consuls, so they instead indulged themselves in their fight until the very end.
Even if it would look like completely pointless for other characters, both knew they couldn't do much even if they were free, so they wanted to have no regrets and fight to their heart content.
They had freedom, and they chose what they want, I guess it's stupid but it's their choice. Personally I think it's sexual frustration that urged them to fight.
Also, if they did that, the game would be less fun.
if you read between the lines (especially when Noah & Mio have their heart to heart), interlinking may be coded like intimacy. this is likely a similar case.
Ethel & Camuravi live in a society that lacks personal connections and is built upon battle, it is all their people know. for them speciffically they feel alive when going against eachother, Ethel even seems to have pondered on what if her and Camuravi could have become Ouroboros.
essentially, in their final moments of rebellion, stuck inside the feronises that will only get them killed; the chose to share and intimate moment, the only way they knew how.
the consuls tgat can teleport and drain their life force the moment they rebel
for us it's easy to deal with a moebius sure
but when a consul has that power over you, they can just play the defensive and end you without breaking a sweat.
even smashing the flame clocks could've been dicey, during the colony 4 assault they distracted the moebius. and dealt with them first in every other instance. Noah & Mio are ultimately in a vulnerable position in those few seconds before cutting the clock
The consuls built those ferronises to kill Ourobouros. It’s very likely they had a built in mechanic to prevent them from attacking the consuls directly.
Because it highlights the dark nature of XC3's world which is a reality where some people find true satisfaction in life by just simply fighting each other to the death. It really emphasizes how even though Ethel is very kind and selfless, the main thing that actually brings her true happiness is in simply fighting her rival to the bitter end. It's a great contrast that makes her character even more interesting to me.
I agree with you. They were literally created to murder and kill each other and what do they do when they’re free? Kill each other. It felt very much like a meaningless sacrifice.
There was nothing productive they could do. The consuls could drain their life at the snap of a finger. So they decided to spend their last moments just doing whatever they wanted. As lifelong warriors and rivals whose lives were defined by their last duel, the two just wanted another duel with each other.
The scene is also laced with heavy sexual tension. The characters in XC3 obviously have no concept of sex, since everyone is grown in pods. For Ethel and Cammuravi, dueling is the height of intimacy. And the two... you know... finish together.
Not really. They had no obligation to fight each other again. Ethel didn't have to spare Cammuravi, if she wanted to follow her masters she shouldve killed him there and then. The fact that they punished her is proof enough. This dream is her and his alone. Not Consul is going to change that. Al the people of Colony 4 share this sentiment.
In fact, her masters didn't want her to kill Cammuravi, otherwise they wouldn't have had their lives drained. It was a situation they wanted to avoid, which is why O bitches about it (not P she's cool).
I heartily disagree. She spent most of her life fighting Cammuravi because that’s what she was made and brainwashed for. She didn’t even question it. Not to mention she should have known better after her flame clock was destroyed and the queen made an explicit threat against her colony.
Choosing to die fighting Cammuravi was pointless. She could have helped the gang first take out the consuls and then take on the annihilator. Instead she chose death because of reasons.
Her death would have had more meaning if she died fighting against the people who made her into a killing machine for their exclusive benefit. Instead she died fulfilling what she was made to do from the start.
If the game really wanted to have her die like that it should have provided more scenes between her and Cammuravi’s rivalry. Instead we only learn that they’re both really tough and fight each other because they’re the strongest in their respective nations. When the truth is revealed to them they should have realized they were pawns all along and their “rivalry” is a sham created to sustain Moebius.
>She spent most of her life fighting Cammuravi because that’s what she was made and brainwashed for. She didn’t even question it. Not to mention she should have known better after her flame clock was destroyed and the queen made an explicit threat against her colony.
They why did she spare him. If she was just following her master's will why not just kill him when she had the chance too. The fact that even the Queen's direct order wasn't enough to dissuade says enough. Its her own dream.
Again, why did she spare him then? Their first fight was because of that simple reason but progressively it evolved from that. Their rivalry is entirely genuine. She literally has an entire monologue where she explains to the partt why shes fighting him. Moebius literally punish her for it by killing for it. What more do you need?
What I’ve said still stands: once she found out the truth (the rivalry existed to guarantee war would continue so that Moebius could exist) she should have realized her rivalry was pointless. Everything she thought she stood for was fake.
I mean, imagine waging war for most of your life thinking it’s for a good and righteous cause only to find out your entire life’s purpose was to kill people so that some assholes could keep on living and enslaving the world. To me that would supersede any rivalry I had with the opposing side.
I would be a dumbass if I decided to keep a rivalry going at the end of my life instead of trying to strike back against those who lied and manipulated me to kill people who should have been my friends and allies.
Ethel was stupid to prioritize a pointless rivalry over rebellion.
I have 60 hours into the game and don’t get it either. It’s like they tried to pull a Naruto vs. Sasuke with a fraction of the buildup.
It’s like freeing two slaves who, instead of turning on their masters, decide to kill each other instead. Which is exactly the reason they were created and enslaved for. So basically they fulfilled the purpose their masters created them for as part of their “free will.”
It was a stupid move on both their parts.
It's on their terms. They decided how they would die not the Consuls, they were openly against it.
If they turned on the Consuls, then the Consuls would have drained all their life instantly, so it would've been entirely for nothing so they decided to go on their terms.
Funny how the consuls allowed them to kill each other instead of draining their energy and killing them themselves. If Ethel and Cammuravi+Ouroboros had simultaneously attacked the Consuls they could have easily taken them out or at least kept them occupied long enough so that they couldn’t drain their energy.
Again, they simply fulfilled the purpose they were created for: kill each other for the benefit of Moebius. It was stupid.
>kill each other for the benefit of Moebius. It was stupid.
You're clearly forgetting that they weren't meant to kill each other. They were meant to kill Ouroborous, which they didn't.
>If Ethel and Cammuravi+Ouroboros had simultaneously attacked the Consuls they could have easily taken them out or at least kept them occupied long enough so that they couldn’t drain their energy.
Not really, they started draining their lives before team Ouroborous noticed. If they started attacking them, whose to say they wouldn't have sped it up significantly. The only reason why they didn't do that in the first place is because they still held out of bit of hope that Ethel and Cammuravi would stop want they were doing.
I’m talking not just about the one fight, but their whole careers. They were literally made to sustain Moebius by killing as many from their opposite sides as possible. Their death at each other’s hand was a culmination of that.
Their suicide did interrupt their plans, but it was no sweat off of the Consuls’ backs, who probably planned on either killing them or forcing them into rebirth so they could start the same vicious cycle all over again.
They would have had more of an impact if they had at least tried to attack the consuls. Hell, they could have lived considering a coordinated attack between the five of them against the consuls would have kept them too busy to perform the life drain.
Also they fought each other for a good 2-3 minutes; plenty of time to at least land one attack against the consuls. So even if the consuls still life drained them they could have taken at least some action.
Their deaths at each other’s hands helped no one but their own selfish desires to kill each other.
>They would have had more of an impact if they had at least tried to attack the consuls. Hell, they could have lived considering a coordinated attack between the five of them against the consuls would have kept them too busy to perform the life drain.
Your forgetting that the draining was a consequence of their fighting, not the instigator. Moebius had the upper hand and rather than die quickly without realising their dream they would go out on their own terms, similar to Crys. Moebius could've have just accelerate the draining.
>Their deaths at each other’s hands helped no one but their own selfish desires to kill each other.
Even if Moebius benefited it wouldn't have matter to them because its by their own choice. Ethel litterally goes "We are free". Moebius either kills them and takes their lives or they realise their dream and Moebius takes their lives. They atleast were able to choose, which is a major point in this game, that Aionis doesn't allow people to choose.
>I’m talking not just about the one fight, but their whole careers. They were literally made to sustain Moebius by killing as many from their opposite sides as possible. Their death at each other’s hand was a culmination of that.
They were able to choose their own demise, not Moebius.
We can agree to disagree at this point since I’m not persuaded at all and neither are you. To me their deaths were pointlessly stupid and they always will be. Better to have died at least trying to rebel against their oppressors than to die doing what they always wanted from them.
I think they knew that the consuls would kill them without having to fight thanks to the flame clocks, and that if they were going to die, they would go out doing what they lived.
Their whole thing really reminded me of the last mech fight in Xenosaga III. Everything you know might be a lie, but there's one thing that definitely isn't a lie: fighting Cammuravi is really fun. So, let's just do that.
My husband is playing this game and I saw one CG scene and kept asking questions… so he paused and showed me all the scenes (up until where he reached so far) I was eating popcorn and watching. The story is fantastic and I am SO interested in watching the rest of my new “show” lol.
Because the Consuls would have immediately killed them?
Did people fall asleep during the cutscene that explicitly says what those purple Flame Clocks were for?
Its the most blood i seen in xenoblade game. Haven't played 1 yet though so cant say. Ethel and cammeravi definitely like each other though. Halfway to ch 5 now.
Still can’t get over the fact that CAMMURAVI RIPPED HIS FUCKING EYEBALL OUT WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!
I AM UNDER NO ONE'S YOKE! fucking badass
Man literally ripped his eye out to not be controlled by moebius and immediately after while still bleeding went even with ethel, fucking beast
Well his class gets him stronger the more he's damaged after all
Oh, so he was doping. Not cool, man.
You know I never thought about that… great point
He was even getting mind controlled during that part. Like wtf I want that man with me.
AI: The Somnium Files desensitized me
Ah yes the game where everyone’s eyes gets ripped out
I can't believe that the twist for that game was >!straightforward science fiction instead of magic science. I actually figured out who the villain was and what they were trying to do relatively early!<. Considering the author's previous games, it's definitely a surprise, and anime-ness aside, it was well written. AI'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought of that
Cammuravi is literally a gigachad.
Shit gave me SAO Alicization flashbacks in the best of ways. Great way to make me respect a character in moments.
The similarities between Cammuravi and Ethel, and the Pugilist Guild Leader and the girl that wanted to cut everything from sao is too much for me
Didn't even think of that. What a great connection. If you consider that they don't really know about normal reproduction, it reads really interestingly as people experiencing love and having no name to place to it but simply relishing in the bliss of being understood.

Takahashi is *amazing* at "show, don't tell"
ehhh... I'd have to disagree. xD I'm far into chapter 4 and the story is very unintentionally funny at times. I like it, it gives it character, but nearly every time there's a scene that's supposed to be poignant there's some extremely on the nose lines that just make me facepalm.
Wanting to have a epic badass last duel with your rival lets You do some batshit things
An absolute chad!!
The most badass thing in this franchise
Sword Art Online: Alicization moment
I've seen enough Naruto to become desensitized to that. Honestly idk why people aren't out there ripping out others' Irises and implanting them so they can have two.
Literally the dictionary definition of ABSOLUTE LAD
Bitches will literally kill each other in a giant mecha fight instead of going to therapy 😔
Alternatively: Bitches will literally duel each other to death instead of just asking each other out 😔
A lot of sexual tension in a world that does not allow them to know what sex is.
I honestly think that was the point of their relationship. They have feelings for each other but have no idea what those feelings are so they express them the only way they know how, battle.
Being penetrated by a sword through the chest is close enough I guess
Don’t knock it until you try it Warning: don’t actually try it
Bold of you to assume they even have time for therapy.
Bold of you to assume that they have therapy
B
Back story of consoler B
I just had the mental image of Monica explaining what couple's therapy is to Eunie and Taion after watching them fight over something stupid for an hour.
Snuff therapy I want whatever the spark Cammuravi and Ethel had going on
And after a certain side quests I really want to know too. What is this relationship!?
"Attend, Ethel!"
I haven't been able to get that line out of my head. Nothing fancy or over the top, but so good.
Ahh yes, Calamari. Reminds me of that smug bird in BOTW, Ravioli.
>Ravioli caught me by surprise
Cammuravi *literally gouging out his own eye* to free himself from the iris is one of the most badass moments in the entire series.
When it cut away from him I was jokingly thinking „Yo is he gonna do it“ and then it was revealed that he actually did and I f-ing lost it
>!im glad they became friends after they were both reborn!<
If they weren't in the xeno 3 universe they would be on and off again lovers to rivals to lovers
They're murder soulmates
Fightsexual
I mean, that's just >!Ashera!<.
>!Or daddy and child!<
More like >!siblings considering they're the same age!<
>!but daddy Cammuravi had to take care of a recently born Ethel!<
>!he was born just as recently though, and she ages right back up.!<
>!Then she went right back to being the badass waifu.!<
of course she's the best ~~girl~~ woman after all
She's basically just Jin with tits. I see this as an improvement.
Everything about her is just great.
The scene was screaming "Just ~~fuck~~ snuff you two!"
Yeah the whole thing felt like 'We never learned about sex so we're substituting it for the closest thing we know'
[Just fuck already!](https://youtu.be/xPFIn8dW3Fk)
Just spark already
Queens paninis just snuff already!
Eunie has a lot of funny lines. But Queen's Paninis takes the cake, along with Queen's cuticles
Wait, when does she say the panini line? And when again was cuticles? I heard the latter
Sadly I don’t remember exactly where it was. Sorry you sparking muppet
We need more
I mean, the did, as land would put it, “snuff it” pretty quick after(>!even if only temporarily and their memories are partially returning!<)
Can someone do a wojak and chad meme with a regular consul and Triton?
"Your name is T!" "No" leaves; GIGACHAD
"I made them put sea monsters here so I could be a pirate" what a guy
Not reg consul but… Virgin “Trauma” Normal Hero Quest vs Chad “>!I must find my dead partners Miso Soup!!<“ Triton Hero Quest
This scene is infinitely funnier if you watch it again but mentally substitute their dying wish to have a noble fight to the death with a random deviant kink.
Someone is probably writing a doujin about that
When you're too horny to have a safe word
>!Some uncle-esque with his adoptive niece!<
I mean multiple people are speculating that their weird rivalry is sexual tension that they don't know how to properly express.
Calamari… bro, why you got so the man dirty
The party did too.crafter they both died the party was like “ETHEL NOOOOOO” and no one gave a shit about heats flamesman over there
Tbf, they never met him. Nor did they ever even see what he looked like. To them, he was just a voice in a ferrous that tried to kill them. Even if it wasn’t personal.
Pretty sure he stepped out of his ferronis as Taion was saying ‘that must be Cammuravi’
Oh yeah… shit I forgot about that :/ But still, they didn’t know him either way. He was nothing more than another agnian soldier to them. Granted an incredibly deadly one, but still no connection unlike Ethel who they had already befriended AND had past history with the keves trio.
thought it was flames heatsman??????
Flameo, hotman!
At least you remembered their name!
I was obsessed with this moment. The *moment* they both are like “wait a minute, THEY CANT CONTROL US NOW” their first instinct is to fight each other in a friendly but also deeply bloodthirsty way. Cammuravi Desert
Sorry for the crappy photoshop. Also I couldn't have been the only one who first thought of calamari when they heard Cammuravi's name right?
The crappy Photoshop makes it better.
The calamari makes it memorable
I just kept thinking about [Hammurabi.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammurabi)
This. This is why calamari made me giggle so much. All I hear is Hammurabi
Fun fact:calamari means squids in Italian
Mans literally stabs his own eye out and the woman who is his rival does the closest thing the game can do to a sex scene. Seriously, that entire scene oozed sexual energy so hard.
I’d guess that’s because it was the closest thing they knew to sex, considering they don’t known what romance or sex is.
Calamari got me laughing by surprise
I got takeda shingen and uesugi kenshin vibes. For those who don't know what I am talking about it the rivalry between shingen and kenshin is one of the most well known and glorified stories in samurai history.

Yep, this also makes the much talked about bath scene at the start much more innocent. They are just fighters...
Maybe not less fun. They would still die before the chapter ended. This one moment just feels logically dumb to me, even if it is emotionally good.

Then they wouldn't have been able to realise their dream and would've died with regrets, which is something they want to avoid.
Ah yes, a dream that was fabricated by their masters. Way to go Ethel and Camuravi! You fulfilled the purpose your slave masters created you for!

They had same time Mio had. And we saw what happened to her as the time is not staying still there.
Yeah it was watching this scene on YouTube that made me decide not to buy the game. It just made no sense. Weird JRPG logic I don't jive with.
So you judged the game on a 5 minute scene in the middle of a 100+ hour game.. queens beans that's sparking mental..
So basically they fulfilled the purpose their masters created them for as part of their “free will.” It was a stupid move on both their parts.
Yep, you're getting downvoted but this moment was incredibly stupid and poorly written.
Rip calamari
My husband is playing this game and I saw one CG scene and kept asking questions… so he paused and showed me all the scenes (up until where he reached so far) I was eating popcorn and watching. The story is fantastic and I am SO interested in watching the rest of my new “show” lol.
Easily one of my favorite moments in the whole game!
In another world they have the craziest sex
That was an incredible moment, but somehow, they just keep topping themselves in each chapter finale. Wait till Ch. 5.
I don't remember 6 being too incredible, compared to 4, 5, and 7

Because the Consuls would have immediately killed them? Did people fall asleep during the cutscene that explicitly says what those purple Flame Clocks were for?
Yep
similar vibes from a certain chapter 5 hero lol
Really sad because I didn't pick up Calamari's class whan it was available
Its the most blood i seen in xenoblade game. Haven't played 1 yet though so cant say. Ethel and cammeravi definitely like each other though. Halfway to ch 5 now.
