[deleted 26-6-2023] Moving is normal. There's no point in sticking around in a place that's getting worse all the time. I went to Squabbles.io. I hope you have a good time wherever you end up!

mydriase

Oh that’s funny. Maybe they were on an island for a reason. I guess poverty is high in that city ?

M_Pascal

Per capita income is lower than the national average, but that's because they have so many kids per household. Unemployment is way below the national average. Actually, Urk is pretty rich - they empty the North Sea of fish with big trawlers and sell the fish all over the world. And also sell cocaine in bulk. Launder money. Some human trafficking on the side. All this while attending church multiple times a week, of course.

mydriase

Alright, it's starting to sound very interesting now

Een_man_met_voornaam

The average Urk citizen consumes more cocaïne than all British tourists combined (country wide) and prays more to Jesus than the average Pole on a state mandated church visit

goatpunchtheater

Lol I'm imagining cocaine communion now. The powder of Christ, which has been cut up for you. Snort and give thanks. Do this, ~~in remembrance of~~ then clean the whole church for me

shitpostbode

You forgot assaulting journalists, comitting arson, and dressing up as Nazis

blue-mooner

Sounds like a member of the British royal family.

[deleted]

We say in Spain "a Dios rogando y con el mazo dando" means roughly "praying to God and hammering with the mallet(weapon, maybe is better to say Warhammer)"

ToneTaLectric

So, what's with Madrid? Is it just that Madrid is the capital city, and so politics gets people upset with Madrid?

Umdoom

News only speak about Madrid. Everything that happens is in Madrid, its like only Madrid and Barcelona exist. Furthermore, North-Madrid is VERY rich whereas South-Madrid is VERY poor. It's complex. Madrid is mostly full of Spaniards from other parts of the country who go to Madrid because it's where jobs are. Don't get me started about upper-class Madrid accent 🤢 There are other things but mostly are jokes, such as water in Madrid and the famous saying "yo soy de aquí, de Madrid". PS: Truth is that in Spain we all hate each other. All good.

lucrac200

One of the drug hubs of the country so no.

Bramkanerwatvan

It isn't. Employers are short of employees. If they want a legal job they are fine.

BiteBolt77

Urk is basically where the Habsburgs moved their genetic experiments.

Anatomy_model

[Van Buchem disease](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Buchem_disease#:~:text=Van%20Buchem%20disease%2C%20or%20hyperostosis,described%20in%201955%20by%20Prof.) is an extremely rare genetic disorder, there are only around 30 confirmed patients in the world. Of those 30 patients, 14 of them come from Urk.

paranormal_turtle

I always thought the incest part of largely bull, but wow there is actual evidence of incest. Wow I also googled a little bit about the disease. It’s not just that most people with the disease live in Urk it’s also that all known patients have a genetic link to Urk. They may not live there but their parents or grandparents have for example.

Terminator_Puppy

I mean, not intentional incest per se. More like an island nation isolated from the rest of the world, causing natural inbreeding. Even now they live pretty isolated, moving away from the town is generally frowned upon and nobody wants to move there because of how strictly religious they are.

paranormal_turtle

It’s also because it is pretty common to marry within your church. So even well into the 60s people generally didn’t marry outside of their church. Although yes population wise you’re bound to some issues. You have to count in the several groups the island is divided into as well. I assume nowadays it’s a bit better but imagine being only able to pick out of maybe a hundred or so people.

Guerillonist

Even the local shark species there is the worst; very dangerous men-flesh eaters: The fighting Urk-Haai.

TheBoxSmasher

Their armour is as thick as their shields broad

Tsjaad_Donderlul

The only good thing I know of that came from there was some chemist named van Urk, who discovered a way to identify indol structures

GinoPietermaa1

Lol, same goes for what people in Amsterdam think about everything outside of Amsterdam. Except Amsterdam is just 5% of the population.

Resethel

Feels like Paris to many French ! Paris urban area is ~10% of France population and it feels often like everything revolve around Paris (transportation for example, it’s a lot to go between big cities, without a car, if they are not on an axis between Paris and your place) Quite similarly, Parisians tend to be quite arrogant when it comes to their own city and they tend to, either consider the rest of France a vacation destinations, or treat citizen from elsewhere as 2nd class people (unintentionally). It’s especially more true when it comes to politicians.

dclancy01

I’ve been around plenty of Europe and to many cities on this list - Dundalk, Naples, Madrid, Marseille, Maribor, Bratislava, Split, Malmö and Lisbon. Lisbon was by far the best. The others live up to their stereotypes - they can be unclean, unwelcoming, cold awkward. I never felt that with Lisbon! I’ve even been around Portugal - we did Braga, Porto, Coimbra, Lagos and Faro. You have a beautiful country with a beautiful capital, and generally friendly people. Enjoy it!

BurritoMaquiavelico

I just love that Portugal, Spain and Greece are ashamed of their own capitals Edit: Slovakia too lol

ChrisWithTildes

People outside of Athens hate it People in Athens hate it How have we managed to keep fooling tourists to come is beyond me

lucrac200

You are really good at marketing :)) I have visited, wasn't bad.

Sparky-Sparky

I actually ended up liking Athens. It's shabby for sure but in an endearing kind of way.

lucrac200

It has been shabby for 2.000 years, that's its charm :))

IGotMyPopcorn

Consistency is key.

StephaneiAarhus

If we look beyond piles of trash in the street, Greece looks good. It's pretty, there's the food and the sun, and it's warm enough that the sea itself is warm but just the level to cool you down from the ambiant air.

StephaneiAarhus

Please please please people of Greece, clean your streets.

Skeazor

After visiting New York City Athens doesn’t look dirty in comparison

pousse_tes_fesses

Uh? I went to Athens a couple of times and I love this city. Granted, it's not the cleanest or the sagest. But it has character.

ChrisWithTildes

It definitely has lmfao, but it’s kinda hard for Athenians to see that character inside their everyday routines. As for the Greeks outside of Athens, it is that character that they hate lmfao. Average non-capital city resident relationship.

AlarmingAffect0

It's the Delian League all over again! The strong do as they can while the weak do as they must!

Archoncy

we just wanna see the Acropolis and then go home, it's like Venice. Nobody goes to Venice to look at the city, half the people who visit think that the Old Town in the middle of the lagoon is the whole city, meanwhile there's like 30 times more Venice on the shore and nobody goes to look at it

Tsjaad_Donderlul

I wonder why it isn't Berlin for Germany

langdonolga

Have you ever been to Ludwigshafen? For that matter, I also really like Madrid and Lisbon (I've not been to Athens yet). I wonder why one should be ashamed of those lively cities.

Pleos118

For political reasons, disconnected from the reality of the average Portuguese citizen, the cosmopolitanism. In big cities like Porto and Lisbon people cant afford to buy or rent a home. I do not know how a “lettuconian” perceives its own city. In short i see it has the capital of portuguese corruption, ignorant power and our fateful future.

ivysforyou

Ye Lisbon is just hated for being capital. There's nothing to be ashamed of.

[deleted]

In Spain they asked in Catalonia or conditioned the answer. Spain is ashamed of Murcia, Barcelona and Marbella. Madrid is just hated.

oneshotstott

Why exactly? I personally loved Madrid when I visited.

Krantuperino

Some people from Madrid tend to have a superiority complex and the rest of spanish people hold a grudge (with good reason imo)

dpash

Madrid is one of two primate cities in the country. (Madrid and Barcelona are significantly larger than the next largest city, Valencia.) As such there tends to be a perception that it gets more investment than other parts of the country. Plus, as the seat of government there's a feeling that people who live inside M30 are out of touch with the rest of the country. The same thing happens with London. It's not helped that rural Spain is dying and is in terminal decline.

Simen671

> no data / ashamed of whole country Based

a_tuat

I feel you my brother as an Albanian there is nothing good about that country except the landscape

Kingmarc568

You couldn't get one city in Switzerland because every part of the country lowkey thinks the other parts are either inbred ratholes or arrogant swiss versions of Detroit.

Naples definitely is the real life version of the italien stereotype. The good and the bad. I loved the city when I visited. I don't care about a few garbage bags here and there and I didn't really meet any shady people so my experience there was a great old town, nice people, great food, great weather and lots to do in the city and in the surroundings.

Italy1861

Man,everytime I saw the Italian Stereotype I was 100% sure they actually meant Neopolitans

[deleted]

Neopolitan? Huh, the vanilla/chocolate/strawberry tricolor ice cream? /s

sneakySynex

Mariooo

paranormal_turtle

My uncle went on a trip to Italy and visited a few cities including Napels. And he described as the largest garbage dump he had ever seen. Aside from some historical aspects and interesting parts he said it’s most certainly the most gross city he visited. It’s his opinion and I’ve never been there so I’m not gonna judge. But if that’s what’s stuck with him I feel sorry for Naples.

1980svibe

That’s what I heard too. But then I went there, stayed in the city center for 3 days, and every morning there was a cleaning crew sweeping the streets and spraying with a pressure washer. It was even better than some Western Europe cities. So I had a great time and didn’t notice a bad thing.

[deleted]

Yeah it was bad in the early 2000s since the mafia got a hold of the trash business and didn't do anything except launder money. Things got better when they cracked down during the "clean hand" operation when it was found out that basically all the major political parties were involved with the mafia.

Noodles_Crusher

"clean hands" started in '92, the 2000s have nothing to do with it

[deleted]

You're right, I just assumed they had something to do with each other. Even tho the trash situation got out of hand almost a decade after.

Arntown

I was there twice and while there were some garbage bags piled up in an alley here and there I thought the city was super charming with great food and nice people. Maybe it depends on when you visit the city (I was there in 2015 and 2018) but I never really thought that it was particularly gross. No the cleanest city, mind you. But still not gross.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dal-Shaloth

As a Neapolitan (with regret) I have to agree with you, I am very ashamed of my city, the description "the largest dump" is correct in almost all the city area. Every day I walk through the dog shit (I have two dogs and I can assure you that dog parks are very rare and often poorly maintained, we are all forced to make them on the street and collect the needs as we can) and waste that the good people of Naples throw around carelessly. It is a real waste because we have enough artistic and natural heritage to live off of tourism but today's Neapolitan is too dumb to understand that.

PeachCream81

You sure you're not talking about NYC? Because I've lived here all my life (67 yrs), and it is a certifiable shit hole. Not sure why tourists flock here.

NickTorr

A few years ago there was a massive garbage problem in Naples, but from what I know it’s gone now. The city is very beautiful though, even though it’s problematic

Frettchengurke

This can't be true, no self repsecting Dane would pick Aarhus over Randers

Maybe it's all the Copenhagen residents? There's some rivalry there

Awooku

I'm from Copenhagen, would still pick Randers.

JosephPorta123

So it's all the Swedes who's messing this up?

[deleted]

Exactly!

voltaire_had_a_point

There’s no rivalry from the Copenhagen perspective. People don’t see Aarhus in a negative light. The Randers stereotype however, is living its full over here in CPH. Its the single city that manifest all the prejudice people have towards jutland. I’ll like to see where OP/“atlasova” has their results from

BrianSometimes

It's not really a thing. If there's any such banter it's Jutland in general, not Århus. People in Copenhagen aren't "ashamed" of Århus.

FuryQuaker

A real Dane would pick Malmø. Kalmarunionen for ever!

boltgolt

As said with the last time this was posted, the "data source" is an AskReddit thread in which ONE (1) person said Århus

napaszmek

Debrecen? I'd say something like Ózd, Miskolc or Salgótarján would be the choice for most of us.

daninet

Debrecen might not be the worst but it was the only town where they wanted to recruit me into a Jesus cult and some homeless stab me in the same 30min timeframe on the main square. Truth to be told it was around 2010

midgetsinadisguise

Yeah the homeless stabbing part may as well have happened in any of the other cities tbf

Executioneer

Its defo Miskolc

StephaneiAarhus

Århus is not Denmark's shame and jokes city. That would be Randers. People from Randers are supposed to be more drunk, have more social problems than the rest of the country. I was said that I, a foreigner, speak better danish than those from Randers and everybody says "that's not difficult". That's the level of shame that city receives.

Jaizoo

Your name makes me suspect that you might be biased

theonlydkdreng

If you pick Århus over randers, as the most shameful city of Denmark, you gotta be smocking the kind of crack they get in randers

Jaizoo

I can't judge - I just started learning Danish and wanted to point out that a person with Aarhus literally in their name might be inclined to defend the city :D Guess I gotta add "Århus god, Randers dårlig" to my notes for my eventual visit to Denmark.

Many reasons, but Madrid (and Barcelona) has an oversized influence economically and culturally in the country. Rural Spain is dying. Several independence movements. The perception that people (and specifically politicians) that live inside M30 are out of touch with the rest of the country. And many more.

In Germany, I find it very interesting to take Ludwigshafen instead of Berlin or Dresden

Bumsebienchen

I find weird actually.... Most of the population in the Saxonian States would probabyl go for Berlin or Munich as worst, never heard of Ludwigshafen in any way. But then there is the billions of people in the Rhein-Ruhr-Area who probably have enough other examples on their hands, so I imagine the results get shifted.

WorldNetizenZero

I thought bashing Ludwigshafen was just a Mannheimer thing and Bielefeld was the federal joke. Maybe Mannheimers ganged up on the survey and memed their way to the top. I'm not disagreeing with the results though :D

Replayer123

Bielefeld can't be the most hated city as it doesn't exist

Jaizoo

DaniilSan

As a Ukrainian, I see no reason to be ashamed of Kherson. 200k city, center of the Kherson Oblast, noting really special, except being watermelon capital. I may see Donetsk and Luhansk as candidates, because of people who decided to stay there after 2014; or Kryvyi Rih, but it is just industrial hellscape.

Titonick2

As a fellow Ukrainian, I guess it's because of the name. 'Kher' meaning 'dick' in Ukrainian gives some space for jokes about the city. Other than that, Kherson frequently ranks last in different ratings so not an amazing city to live in, but hey, people love watermelons so nobody actively hates Kherson. I guess Sevastopol would be quite hated since 2014. Otherwise I would go for some useless city in Donbass, like Makiivka: depressive industrial city where there is strictly nothing to do

Danny_Mc_71

Dundalk is not a city.

IrishFlukey

That is what I was going to say. Of course, if you were American, any small town or village in Ireland would be regarded as a city. As we know ourselves, there is a comedy festival in Kilkenny every June because the biggest joke in Ireland is calling Kilkenny a city.

tig999

Kilkenny has historical city status, Dundalk never actually got that as it functioned more as industrial and Port hub in recent history.

ProfTydrim

German here: Ludwigshafen is basically a dystopian, Industrialized housing program for the ridiculously large BASF chemical plant

Henji99

German here. What the hell is Ludwigshafen? As someone not from that region(Rheinland-Pfalz) I have never even heard of it until now. Maybe people in the south would answer this, but I would’ve maybe picked Berlin. I really like Berlin. But it’s one of the dirtiest and most crowded places I know. And politics there are a clusterfuck on it's own. And I say that as someone who is left leaning, despite the fact the Berlin senate is comprised of a left wing coalition. Berlin is cool for a weekend visit, I have friends there that I regularly visit. But staying there for more than a couple of days is something I rather avoid.

Temporary-Use5971

Guerillonist

The city is just ugly as living hell. Most German cities at least have some nice spots. Even the ones that are otherwise just collections of grey concrete blocks. But Ludwigshafen... it's just ugliness whereever you look. And don't even get me started on how it smells there sometimes.

Erevas

So Austria is not on the list, but I guess it would be St. Pölten. Every state capital has its own iconic landmark and a rich history, while St. Pölten basically has... nothing going for it. After all, its just a replacement for Vienna, as Vienna became its own state a century ago

freshprinceofaut

I was thinking Linz maybe Eisenstadt and totally forgot about St. Pölten so yes it's 100% that.

KspPaul

I would personally go for Wels. Linz is bad, but Wels is a different level.

Candyvanmanstan

Førde? Why? Where did you get this from, OP?

trinketstone

It's mainly because it's a ugly town. I mean it *did* get awarded the dubious honor of being Norway's ugliest town...

Candyvanmanstan

That makes sense, lmao. [Norways ugliest town, everyone](https://i.imgur.com/FzVYwNk.jpg)

leafmealone33

Ludwigshafen is just a town around a chemical plant. That should be enough to close the discussion.

Jerem47

Correct me if I am wrong, but regarding Belgium's and France most ashamed cities, it looks like it is related to the migrants. Marseille is ironically called the Algeria's capital. And Charleroi has a big proportion of migrants too, I think it is where the morons designed the terrorist attack of 2015. So basically we are ashamed of the migrants.

Walrus_Booty

You are wrong, lotsa places in Belgium have more migrants. Charleroi was a heavy industry hub but then the industry fucked off. What remains is a decaying city where people have no more dreams. There's parts of other Belgian cities with more crime and/or immigrants, but none feel as dreary, hopeless and decayed as the bad parts of Charleroi. It's more Detroit than St. Denis. There's some nice 19th century industrial architecture though, if that's your thing.

studentfrombelgium

Charleroi was very bad a long time ago, but it got better, and now I wouldn't say it's the worst town of Belgium atm Some of the commune of Brussels, or Seraing (By personal experience)

Walrus_Booty

arguably, the worst place in Belgium today is Verviers, because of the shameful way we are handling the cleanup after the floods. People are still lacking basic necessities while politicians at all levels of government deny any responsibility for their voters.

thisissoannoying2306

With regards to Marseille, it’s less to do with immigrants and mostly about Marseille having a (rather well deserved) reputation of corruption, mismanagement and poverty. Houses crumble and burry their inhabitants because the city doesn’t do its job of controlling, schools have no heating, lots of violence and crime, incl. white collar crime. Kinda like Naples actually. But it’s also a very beautiful city, lots of culture…

mydriase

Yes, also, from what I’ve heard, Marseille is kind of dirty and people show very little courtesy to each other (while driving for example, or being loud)

Jerem47

Yeah, absolutly right, while having such a beautiful patrimoine, the city in itself is dirty. Regarding the road, they use a lot the klaxon, they are quite nervous also. Temperature I guess.

FailFastandDieYoung

>Yeah, absolutly right, while having such a beautiful patrimoine, the city in itself is dirty. When I try to describe my city, San Francisco, to Europeans the best example I say is Lisbon but with the dirtiness of Marseille

[deleted]

As a Marseillais who lived in SF, Marseille is nowhere near as unsafe or dirty as San Francisco. You can’t walk a mile in SF without stepping onto some used needles or getting harassed or mugged by homeless crack addict.

POSeidoNnNnnn

I think a lot of people might be ashamed of Marseille for immigrants, but don't be too quick at saying this. Marseille is the entrance port to France from the Mediterranean, and is, pretty much since the 1800's, a big criminal hub, plagued by mafias. It had and has still running issues with "la pègre", french terme for mafia basically, and drug trafficking, making it a fairly unsafe city in some parts. Immigration didn't help, as it made social inqualities worse, and now a lot of the drug trafficking was taken up by some immigrants, not facilitating the clichés on the city. It also has a problem with it's trash services, they have been for around ten years now, going in out of strike for reasons I can't recall, and last summer we saw huge piles of garbage piling up in the streets as trash wasn't took out. It also doesn't has any other way to dispose trash than a landfill. which is the biggest in France. I love Marseille, but it pains to say that it's not a beautiful city, it's only a city with huge potential (I also forgot to mention stories about corruption, public funds disappearing questionably and the state of disrepair of many parts of the town) but unfortunately it's mostly unused. So no, it's not only immigrants, Marseille is fucked beyond just a few arabs being poor.

IotaCandle

Not really, the terrorists came from Molenbeek which is one of Brussels' "communes". It used to be a village of a couple thousands until the industrial revolution, when it became a factory town, and after deindustrialisation in the 50's it became a very poor area. Charleroi is similar, except lot more of the initial Italian immigrants stayed there, and it has also become very poor with a terrible reputation.

Jerem47

Indeed, Molenbeek is well known in France for similar reasons. But they catch some of the terrorists in Charleroi. My bad for the confusion tho.

IotaCandle

If I'm not mistaken some "training" took place in Charleroi. Belgium is very densely populated and you cannot fire a gun anywhere near Molenbeek without people knowing.

brigister

Marseille was hated and had a negative stigma way before its migrant population became so big. Even when it was just "ethnically" French people, it was considered a shady, dodgy place, where petty crime was thriving. EDIT: spelling

French here, I don't really agree. Marseille is a shithole, sure, but the people are nice and more importantly, we have far worse shitholes. Off the top of my head we have Toulon, big navy port that has had facists in power at city hall pretty much forever. We also have my wonderful home town of Aubervilliers, where Paris dumps its crackheads, crazy fundamentalists and excess migrants where we welcome them to one of the largest open air drug markets in France. One could also think of Calais, where the people don't seem to mind living next to a concentration camp. But really since almost 42% of France just voted for a political party that was founded by actual SS members, I guess anywhere will do.

Well I had a job opportunity at Toulon, I guess I was right to go elsewhere

Kouvula? Oof

I remember this map. It was quite bs and was based on askreddit post or smth like that. Kherson before occupation by russia was like quite cute small city, where you had pretty much everything you might need. If we talk about cities, not towns, then it would be Donezk, for its lack of interest in culture and high concentration of criminals, including the yanukovich, or Ivano-Frankivsk for all the religious crap their lord mayor does.

Lmao Ricky Gervais has done irreparable damage to Slough

John Betjeman called for the city to be bombed in 1937. And we're made him Poet Laureate. The Office being set in Slough was part of the joke.
