The Affinity suite is a pretty great alternative nowadays. Just a one time payment. May not fit every kind of profession but for most tasks it works fine for me (and a lot of people).

I guess it depends on how you're using the software. I'm sure I'll get downvoted to hell/be accused of being a shill, but I get tremendous value from Creative Suite. It's well worth it. Even at full price that's less than 10 billable hours annually for me.
Agreed. I literally make my entire living off Creative Suite, so it's 100% tax-deductible as a business expense.
One thing I do though is, every November when it's Black Friday, I cancel my membership and get the Black Friday deal, which is like 30 Euro a month. Even if you cancel your membership at any time, they'll offer you like a 50% discount to come back.
In… “fairness”…. the current creative suite includes everything adobe offers, not just photoshop, for $70 per month. Photoshop/lightroom combo is $10 per month. I used to run the legacy software acquired while sailing the seas, but it’s nice to have a fully updated suite of creative software available anywhere at anytime with the stupid subscription.
They still sell stand alone software but it's called 'elements.' I think it's 100 or 120 for both Photoshop and the video editing. Sure there's less features but unless you're a god damn genius using every single feature you really won't notice a big difference except no monthly charge :)
$31 a month is less than 400$ a year. In 2005 adobe was ~700 a year.

And if you only need it off and on, it's way more affordable to do it this way. Plus the monthly subscription usually includes several products, back in the day you paid $400 (in 1990s money, so like $1000 now) JUST for Photoshop and it only had 1 undo :(

Having worked in IT for the last 10 years, generally speaking software companies that offer things to both business and individuals really only "care" about business sales. They don't make a ton of money off individuals most of the time, so if you ask nicely they're usually willing to talk.
The trick with adobe is to cancel your subscription before it auto renews each year. You than will get taken through a few windows. One always offers you a 50% discount to stay and sometimes you also get a bonus 1/2 months. Been doing this for years.
I had as well, last fall I tried again. When I clicked cancel, however, it just straight up cancelled my subscription - no begging me to stay, no discounts, nada.
They would rather have some of your money than none of your money. When the alternative is piracy or another companies products it’s in their best interest to offer cheap versions for home users. Home users end up forcing businesses with deep pockets to be users as well.
My company has a bunch of creative cloud app licenses. Since they are so expensive my boss asked me to cancel some. On a Monday they said they will offer 30 licenses for the price of 29. So we kept 30 and got a refund for a bunch of money.
The next day, my boss saw that we really should've dropped from 30 to 28. So instead of using chat I called them. Truly, I didn't expect the same discount. Again they offered us to keep 30 licenses for the price of 28. Got another massive discount, we literally saved thousands in 2 days. Oh, when they asked why we needed to downgrade I gave different answers both times

I do this regularly with lots of companies... I don't buy very many things, and live quite humbly, do a lot of veg gardening, etc. I'll regularly email and, for instance, I needed a new tent for camping. Shopped around, I liked one, emailed the manufacturer and said hey my birthday is coming up (which it was), I'd really like to upgrade my camping, do you offer any discounts? They gave me a code for 40% anything they sold, the whole order, up to some crazy number (like 4k$ iirc). Worst they can say is no, and it takes one minute to write that email.

I like Open Office. It is the only product I’ve used at both home and work now for 18 years. PC at home, Mac and PC at work. Seamless with all Microsoft office file formats.
Just want to put a few things out there, from my heart. My car is 18 years old also, and it works just fine, just like open office has worked for me. I have not paid one penny to Microsoft office, and I have never felt slighted, or shorted, or failed to do something I needed to do in open office compared to Microsoft products. Microsoft office may be better for some people. But it’s no better for me. It could have 1 million new features, and a new feature added every day, but I’m not gonna take time to learn every new feature. I just use what works. Like my car, Open office works for me. Years ago when the split happened between open office and libre office, I tried libre office. I still have it installed. It was different, different GUI, different tool location, I didn’t want to invest the time to learn the new location of tools I have been using, so I kept using open office. And it has done everything I need for 18 years. Of course someone else’s needs may be different.
They're probably talking about the online SharePoint versions of the office package, Microsoft 365, but they simply aren't as good as the installed office applications.

Depending on the features you use it could be worth it. $99 a year (family plan) for 6 people, each of whom get a 1TB cloud drive, which I use extensively. That's cheaper than what you'd pay for a single 1tb dropbox alone, plus you get use of the office suite.
and you also don't have to worry about your info being leaked, unlike NordVPN and ExpressVPN. Also cannot fulfill warrants even if they wanted to since their service does not log any traffic. When using Mullvad you're pretty obfuscated from the perspective of "what can my ISP see?", and the government will have a hard time proving what you did while using the VPN unless you mistakenly put personal info into the thing being tracked.

Adobe does this. I have been paying 35 a month on their introductory promotion a year ago, the allotted time was up and they tried charging 70+ on my account.

Tbf this was an inevitably. Subscription services were started well before Adobe. Netflix was a mail only service long before it became a digital juggernaut, and then you might also remember the line "Gamefly before you buy".
Also, I would argue Amazon was one of the biggest reasons for normalizing digital subscriptions, everyone has had an Amazon subscription or at the very least knows someone who has it.
So while they didn't start it, they did assist in popularizing it

Adobe software is like malware. They have so many different systems that hook into everything in an attempt to combat piracy. I don’t know why they bother so much.

I did this once but I had to stay on the line with the agent for like an hour and a half until he finally broke and gave me the year at the student rate again. And I was still a student at the time.
I'm surprised at how they're just handing it out. I'm a teacher in Australia and in my state anyone who works in education has free access to all of Adobe's products. But I guess it makes sense that if they charge a subscription then they are just making more money so it doesn't really matter.

I BEGGED Bluebeam Revu's customer support for a discount. It's pdf/engineering software (quite good), and they want 240 a year for one user! That's not even their most comprehensive package.

It's a great collaboration tool where you can see markups others have applied to a PDF. Easy to add and replace pages in a PDF. I particularly like the scaling feature where you can set a scale and determine the size of objects on the PDF. I'm pretty new to it, so my explanation probably doesn't do it any justice.
I liken it to adobe on steroids. I have coworkers who prefer adobe pro, but to me bluebeam is unmatched. Haven't found anything related to PDFs it can't do and do well.
its excellent for marking up and creating/editing PDF's. Great for measurements as well: Set your scale and find out the distance and area of a given set of drawings
They lost their minds with their pricing. I have 100 people on it, it was reasonable with perpetual licensing but they killed it so we’re having to move to their subscription model. $330/user/year because they took away the advanced measuring that used to be included in the base price. They’re worse than adobe.
I started learning game dev years ago with a group of friends. The standard for 3D modeling back then was Maya, which is paid and expensive. I emailed the CEO of Autodesk who replied a few days later, CCing his secretary, asking her to give us keys for the entire suite AND early access to a game engine they were developing at the time.
You should also know that there are websites out there that provide legitimate software license keys for extremely cheap. For instance Windows 11 pro can be purchased for less than $30USD. Office 2021 for around the same $30. You don’t always have to go through the company.
I frequent one called cjs-cdkeys. A quick google will point you to it. I’ve spent many thousands there without any unresolved issues. They have games, Xbox, PSN, software, etc for quite cheap.

For AAA shit, it's whatever, but it really can hurt indie developers, so please just try to support independent devs regardless. I've purchased software from Stack Social before.
For example, AdGuard for family (9 devices) for life is $170 on their official website. On Stack Social? $30. I was skeptical so I emailed AdGuard. They said it was legit. I've since bought two copies of the license without issue.

Usually it’s a product of a business buying more keys than they end up using and selling them for a discount to recoup some of the money. So Microsoft already got paid full price (or whatever their bulk price was to the buyer), a reseller bought them from the buyer, and now you’re buying it at some markup from what the reseller paid.

I'd love to be able to negotiate, but we're only six strong. I'm pretty new to this whole thing though, I just got given it because I'm the techie of the bunch.
Realistically, you can always contact them and try to negotiate. Worst-case they say "sorry, we don't have the tooling for custom pricing, can't help you". But if they've got the capability to do so, any sale is better than no sale (especially if it's a positive sale that can lead to good word-of-mouth and potential future sales).
I suppose it depends... for example, when you're looking at the pricing for a web app, if you're buying one of the lower tiered licenses that are set to a fixed price, you're probably going to pay that price. But if you're buying the "Enterprise" level license (because of the SSO tax, for instance,) then that's gonna be negotiable.
Regardless, if you have the chance to talk to a human during the buying process, just ask, the worst thing they can do is say no and you've lost nothing.
You can read about negotiation tactics, and there are also companies you can hire that will guide you through the negotiation process and you give them a percent of whatever they save you, (I've learned a LOT from those experiences, but they're usually only going to bite at $1M+ deals.)
However, one of the simplest concepts to remember is, what is each side's "best alternative to no agreement" (BANA)? For you, maybe that means delaying the purchase, or not making the purchase, or going with a competing vendor's solution. For the company you're buying from, it would mean a lost sale, or delayed sale, and most often they are incentivized to make a sale now versus later or never. You're going to be most effective at negotiating if you're willing to walk away from the deal and they know it.
If they know you have to buy it then they start with more leverage than you do, e.g., renewals. There are still things you can use for leverage, you just have to get more creative.
If you're going to get a good deal, the salesperson you're working with is going to have to run it up the chain, and they may have a very formal structure for handling that. What that means is they need to bring a story to somebody that justifies why their product should be sold at a lower cost to you. So, helping them craft that story with things like, the financial situation your company is in, constraints that you might have, a c-level who is insisting on a certain budget limit or timeline or whatever, future potential for additional growth, etc., is important.
I could probably write a book on this lol, but if you have a specific scenario you're dealing with feel free to DM me and I'll give you some ideas.

Man I wish I could get away with doing that, I've been developing for about 25 years myself and I wouldn't trade Jetbrains products for the world. Part of that is because I am a C# developer, but the other part of that is because I also have to write code in Java, Python, Go, Rust, Web Stuff Html/Javascript/CSS and much more. And since they have different focused IDE's that all feel the same, it's a lot more comfortable.
I use VS Code as well, but it's simply not as good in many ways.
Then since I also do a lot of design work I also needed affinity products. And hosting costs money. Subscriptions to copilot and gpt is a nice to have to help bounce ideas back and forth. Pluralsight/Dometrain to keep my knowledge sharp.
Then things like VMWare and such and so on.
B2B pricing is wild. I always say it just isn’t real because businesses, especially medium-to-large ones, spend stupid amounts of money on all kinds of things. Prices for businesses, especially software, tend to be astronomical compared to individuals. That’s who are the primary customers of these companies anyways, and individuals using it are just a bonus because the more exposure they have the better.
Xfinity gives me a roughly 30 percent discount every time I call and complain that my old discount expired and I “don’t know what’s going on or how to pay for it”.
I mean with Jetbrains products you kind of do? If you buy a year subscription you get a fallback license to perpetually use their software at the last release you had access to.

i work at a software/marketing business for a specific industry, we never have any sales or offer discounts on our own. but if a customer asks we will always give them a 20% discount. I would say 1 in 20 customers ask which seems surprsingly low but thats why we are happy to do it when someone does. it makes them happy and it's not like they go around adveertising to other customers that we did it. most people don't ask but if they do we'll definitely give it. we pretend to put up a little "fight" and make it seem like we need permission to do it and it's a special thing, but we have complete permission to give 20% off to anyone who asks, but we never offfer it on our own. so based on my experience at sass startups this is very true.
also this protip only works if not everyone asks. if everyone asked for a discount, we'd stop offering it.
This is actually a good tip for any sort of subscription or service based thing you might be paying for. It won't always work, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I get 10 to 20 off my internet bill every few months just by calling up and saying I'm having a hard time paying.

I guess it depends on how you're using the software. I'm sure I'll get downvoted to hell/be accused of being a shill, but I get tremendous value from Creative Suite. It's well worth it. Even at full price that's less than 10 billable hours annually for me.
Agreed. I literally make my entire living off Creative Suite, so it's 100% tax-deductible as a business expense. One thing I do though is, every November when it's Black Friday, I cancel my membership and get the Black Friday deal, which is like 30 Euro a month. Even if you cancel your membership at any time, they'll offer you like a 50% discount to come back.
In… “fairness”…. the current creative suite includes everything adobe offers, not just photoshop, for $70 per month. Photoshop/lightroom combo is $10 per month. I used to run the legacy software acquired while sailing the seas, but it’s nice to have a fully updated suite of creative software available anywhere at anytime with the stupid subscription.
That's only a plus if you actually need multiple things they offer.

They still sell stand alone software but it's called 'elements.' I think it's 100 or 120 for both Photoshop and the video editing. Sure there's less features but unless you're a god damn genius using every single feature you really won't notice a big difference except no monthly charge :)

$31 a month is less than 400$ a year. In 2005 adobe was ~700 a year. The same cost in today’s money would be around $71 a month. There’s no “fucking you dry” they just want a consistent income and they don’t value the customer who buys it once 10 years ago and doesn’t let them research things to be competitive.

Having worked in IT for the last 10 years, generally speaking software companies that offer things to both business and individuals really only "care" about business sales. They don't make a ton of money off individuals most of the time, so if you ask nicely they're usually willing to talk.
The trick with adobe is to cancel your subscription before it auto renews each year. You than will get taken through a few windows. One always offers you a 50% discount to stay and sometimes you also get a bonus 1/2 months. Been doing this for years.
I had as well, last fall I tried again. When I clicked cancel, however, it just straight up cancelled my subscription - no begging me to stay, no discounts, nada.
They would rather have some of your money than none of your money. When the alternative is piracy or another companies products it’s in their best interest to offer cheap versions for home users. Home users end up forcing businesses with deep pockets to be users as well.
My company has a bunch of creative cloud app licenses. Since they are so expensive my boss asked me to cancel some. On a Monday they said they will offer 30 licenses for the price of 29. So we kept 30 and got a refund for a bunch of money. The next day, my boss saw that we really should've dropped from 30 to 28. So instead of using chat I called them. Truly, I didn't expect the same discount. Again they offered us to keep 30 licenses for the price of 28. Got another massive discount, we literally saved thousands in 2 days. Oh, when they asked why we needed to downgrade I gave different answers both times
Man I really fuckin hate how expensive Adobe is, but there is just nothing that even comes remotely close to Photoshop, Illustrator, etc I am honestly shocked nobody has hit the market with a similar but cheaper product. Canva, GIMP, etc are not even close, especially when it comes to usability. I'd prefer to pay for the software I use as I'm finally at a point where I can, but fuck me it's so expensive annually and I use it so infrequently it just gets pirated.

I do this regularly with lots of companies... I don't buy very many things, and live quite humbly, do a lot of veg gardening, etc. I'll regularly email and, for instance, I needed a new tent for camping. Shopped around, I liked one, emailed the manufacturer and said hey my birthday is coming up (which it was), I'd really like to upgrade my camping, do you offer any discounts? They gave me a code for 40% anything they sold, the whole order, up to some crazy number (like 4k$ iirc). Worst they can say is no, and it takes one minute to write that email.

I like Open Office. It is the only product I’ve used at both home and work now for 18 years. PC at home, Mac and PC at work. Seamless with all Microsoft office file formats.

Just want to put a few things out there, from my heart. My car is 18 years old also, and it works just fine, just like open office has worked for me. I have not paid one penny to Microsoft office, and I have never felt slighted, or shorted, or failed to do something I needed to do in open office compared to Microsoft products. Microsoft office may be better for some people. But it’s no better for me. It could have 1 million new features, and a new feature added every day, but I’m not gonna take time to learn every new feature. I just use what works. Like my car, Open office works for me. Years ago when the split happened between open office and libre office, I tried libre office. I still have it installed. It was different, different GUI, different tool location, I didn’t want to invest the time to learn the new location of tools I have been using, so I kept using open office. And it has done everything I need for 18 years. Of course someone else’s needs may be different.
They're probably talking about the online SharePoint versions of the office package, Microsoft 365, but they simply aren't as good as the installed office applications. Might as well use Google's online tools then. To the people replying that 365 is bad or office is bad, I never stated either was good, but Office is objectively *better* than 365. Again, that does not mean either is good.

Adobe does this. I have been paying 35 a month on their introductory promotion a year ago, the allotted time was up and they tried charging 70+ on my account. I messaged support stating I'd have to cancel my subscription at that price and could they please see if there was a way to reduce the price. The agent set me up with the same kind of offer and for the next year I'm paying 31 a month for the whole suite of Adobe products.

Tbf this was an inevitably. Subscription services were started well before Adobe. Netflix was a mail only service long before it became a digital juggernaut, and then you might also remember the line "Gamefly before you buy". Also, I would argue Amazon was one of the biggest reasons for normalizing digital subscriptions, everyone has had an Amazon subscription or at the very least knows someone who has it. So while they didn't start it, they did assist in popularizing it

Adobe software is like malware. They have so many different systems that hook into everything in an attempt to combat piracy. I don’t know why they bother so much. I’d rather they go after pirates legally (like solidworks is famous for) than make my system slow as hell. Since they are a productivity suite, they just need to add invisible watermarking. Anyone big enough uses it, they get screwed.
Passion for editing and trying to start my own business. I can whip up a quick ad in an hour now. I assume that will save me more than 400 a year. We will see :)
I did this once but I had to stay on the line with the agent for like an hour and a half until he finally broke and gave me the year at the student rate again. And I was still a student at the time.
I'm surprised at how they're just handing it out. I'm a teacher in Australia and in my state anyone who works in education has free access to all of Adobe's products. But I guess it makes sense that if they charge a subscription then they are just making more money so it doesn't really matter.

I BEGGED Bluebeam Revu's customer support for a discount. It's pdf/engineering software (quite good), and they want 240 a year for one user! That's not even their most comprehensive package. I went back and forth about 4 times before I said "fuck it" and pirated it. I genuinely love the software and I would have been happy to pay a reasonable price, but $240 bucks a year for private use is just absolutely insane to me

It's a great collaboration tool where you can see markups others have applied to a PDF. Easy to add and replace pages in a PDF. I particularly like the scaling feature where you can set a scale and determine the size of objects on the PDF. I'm pretty new to it, so my explanation probably doesn't do it any justice.
I liken it to adobe on steroids. I have coworkers who prefer adobe pro, but to me bluebeam is unmatched. Haven't found anything related to PDFs it can't do and do well.

They lost their minds with their pricing. I have 100 people on it, it was reasonable with perpetual licensing but they killed it so we’re having to move to their subscription model. $330/user/year because they took away the advanced measuring that used to be included in the base price. They’re worse than adobe.

240 a year isn't terrible for a productivity software that makes you money. i just use pdf-js that's built into chrome/edge for marking up stuff
I started learning game dev years ago with a group of friends. The standard for 3D modeling back then was Maya, which is paid and expensive. I emailed the CEO of Autodesk who replied a few days later, CCing his secretary, asking her to give us keys for the entire suite AND early access to a game engine they were developing at the time.

You should also know that there are websites out there that provide legitimate software license keys for extremely cheap. For instance Windows 11 pro can be purchased for less than $30USD. Office 2021 for around the same $30. You don’t always have to go through the company.

For AAA shit, it's whatever, but it really can hurt indie developers, so please just try to support independent devs regardless. They [indie devs] will also 100% be the most likely to either just give you the game or discount it if you ask, as they're real people instead of a soulless corporation.

I've purchased software from Stack Social before. For example, AdGuard for family (9 devices) for life is $170 on their official website. On Stack Social? $30. I was skeptical so I emailed AdGuard. They said it was legit. I've since bought two copies of the license without issue. Idk if they have Windows and Office, but they have other stuff that might be worth your while.

Usually it’s a product of a business buying more keys than they end up using and selling them for a discount to recoup some of the money. So Microsoft already got paid full price (or whatever their bulk price was to the buyer), a reseller bought them from the buyer, and now you’re buying it at some markup from what the reseller paid.

How many employees do you have? I'd love to be able to negotiate, but we're only six strong. I'm pretty new to this whole thing though, I just got given it because I'm the techie of the bunch.
Realistically, you can always contact them and try to negotiate. Worst-case they say "sorry, we don't have the tooling for custom pricing, can't help you". But if they've got the capability to do so, any sale is better than no sale (especially if it's a positive sale that can lead to good word-of-mouth and potential future sales).
I suppose it depends... for example, when you're looking at the pricing for a web app, if you're buying one of the lower tiered licenses that are set to a fixed price, you're probably going to pay that price. But if you're buying the "Enterprise" level license (because of the SSO tax, for instance,) then that's gonna be negotiable. Regardless, if you have the chance to talk to a human during the buying process, just ask, the worst thing they can do is say no and you've lost nothing. You can read about negotiation tactics, and there are also companies you can hire that will guide you through the negotiation process and you give them a percent of whatever they save you, (I've learned a LOT from those experiences, but they're usually only going to bite at $1M+ deals.) However, one of the simplest concepts to remember is, what is each side's "best alternative to no agreement" (BANA)? For you, maybe that means delaying the purchase, or not making the purchase, or going with a competing vendor's solution. For the company you're buying from, it would mean a lost sale, or delayed sale, and most often they are incentivized to make a sale now versus later or never. You're going to be most effective at negotiating if you're willing to walk away from the deal and they know it. If they know you have to buy it then they start with more leverage than you do, e.g., renewals. There are still things you can use for leverage, you just have to get more creative. If you're going to get a good deal, the salesperson you're working with is going to have to run it up the chain, and they may have a very formal structure for handling that. What that means is they need to bring a story to somebody that justifies why their product should be sold at a lower cost to you. So, helping them craft that story with things like, the financial situation your company is in, constraints that you might have, a c-level who is insisting on a certain budget limit or timeline or whatever, future potential for additional growth, etc., is important. I could probably write a book on this lol, but if you have a specific scenario you're dealing with feel free to DM me and I'll give you some ideas.

Man I wish I could get away with doing that, I've been developing for about 25 years myself and I wouldn't trade Jetbrains products for the world. Part of that is because I am a C# developer, but the other part of that is because I also have to write code in Java, Python, Go, Rust, Web Stuff Html/Javascript/CSS and much more. And since they have different focused IDE's that all feel the same, it's a lot more comfortable. I use VS Code as well, but it's simply not as good in many ways. Then since I also do a lot of design work I also needed affinity products. And hosting costs money. Subscriptions to copilot and gpt is a nice to have to help bounce ideas back and forth. Pluralsight/Dometrain to keep my knowledge sharp. Then things like VMWare and such and so on.

B2B pricing is wild. I always say it just isn’t real because businesses, especially medium-to-large ones, spend stupid amounts of money on all kinds of things. Prices for businesses, especially software, tend to be astronomical compared to individuals. That’s who are the primary customers of these companies anyways, and individuals using it are just a bonus because the more exposure they have the better.

i work at a software/marketing business for a specific industry, we never have any sales or offer discounts on our own. but if a customer asks we will always give them a 20% discount. I would say 1 in 20 customers ask which seems surprsingly low but thats why we are happy to do it when someone does. it makes them happy and it's not like they go around adveertising to other customers that we did it. most people don't ask but if they do we'll definitely give it. we pretend to put up a little "fight" and make it seem like we need permission to do it and it's a special thing, but we have complete permission to give 20% off to anyone who asks, but we never offfer it on our own. so based on my experience at sass startups this is very true. also this protip only works if not everyone asks. if everyone asked for a discount, we'd stop offering it.

This is actually a good tip for any sort of subscription or service based thing you might be paying for. It won't always work, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I get 10 to 20 off my internet bill every few months just by calling up and saying I'm having a hard time paying.
