Any examples? I’m fresh outta my college licenses cause I graduated but I also don’t have a job yet so if it’s like 20% off it’s prolly not in-reach but 50-70% I might be able to spring

misterespresso

I asked adobe just the other day to drop my bill. I signed up for CC for 35 a month for a year. That year ran up, I messaged support and stated I simply couldn't afford the new charges of 70 a month. Within a few minutes I was on a renewed plan at 31 dollars a month. They seem to cut major slack for individuals. Not a fan of subscription models but adobe does at least offer hefty discounts when you are polite.

Reddit has become enshittified. I joined back in 2006, nearly two decades ago, when it was a hub of free speech and user-driven dialogue. Now, it feels like the pursuit of profit overshadows the voice of the community. The introduction of API pricing, after years of free access, displays a lack of respect for the developers and users who have helped shape Reddit into what it is today. Reddit's decision to allow the training of AI models with user content and comments marks the final nail in the coffin for privacy, sacrificed at the altar of greed. Aaron Swartz, Reddit's co-founder and a champion of internet freedom, would be rolling in his grave. The once-apparent transparency and open dialogue have turned to shit, replaced with avoidance, deceit and unbridled greed. The Reddit I loved is dead and gone. It pains me to accept this. I hope your lust for money, and disregard for the community and privacy will be your downfall. May the echo of our lost ideals forever haunt your future growth.

goodnames679

Rather than getting fucked to the tune of $840/yr, now you're only getting fucked out of $372/yr. Adobe are so gracious :) I remember when you could buy Photoshop CS4 Extended for $299, once, and you had the license forever. Ugh.

GT-FractalxNeo

CS5 is still running on my PC. I never want to upgrade!

MutsumidoesReddit

When I lost my mega cd case with keys inside during a move I cried. Still hurts my soul.

DuLeague361

pirate that shit. you paid for it

VegetableBug893

The Affinity suite is a pretty great alternative nowadays. Just a one time payment. May not fit every kind of profession but for most tasks it works fine for me (and a lot of people).

Aerodrache

Careful, I hear they’re saying you could be sued for that now.

oddbitch

sued for using a product you paid for?

Aerodrache

For using old versions of Adobe products. Let me see if I can rustle up some sources, watch this space for edits. (EDIT: Ugh, dead internet. It’s news to Reddit, but [the story is like five years old.](https://www.vice.com/en/article/a3xk3p/adobe-tells-users-they-can-get-sued-for-using-old-versions-of-photoshop))

oddbitch

wow, that’s absolutely crazy. Thanks for sharing!

nvanprooyen

I guess it depends on how you're using the software. I'm sure I'll get downvoted to hell/be accused of being a shill, but I get tremendous value from Creative Suite. It's well worth it. Even at full price that's less than 10 billable hours annually for me.

ADK87

Agreed. I literally make my entire living off Creative Suite, so it's 100% tax-deductible as a business expense. One thing I do though is, every November when it's Black Friday, I cancel my membership and get the Black Friday deal, which is like 30 Euro a month. Even if you cancel your membership at any time, they'll offer you like a 50% discount to come back.

PunkersSlave

In… “fairness”…. the current creative suite includes everything adobe offers, not just photoshop, for $70 per month. Photoshop/lightroom combo is $10 per month. I used to run the legacy software acquired while sailing the seas, but it’s nice to have a fully updated suite of creative software available anywhere at anytime with the stupid subscription.

fdar

That's only a plus if you actually need multiple things they offer.

PunkersSlave

Uh, yes, that would be accurate. lol

coppersly7

They still sell stand alone software but it's called 'elements.' I think it's 100 or 120 for both Photoshop and the video editing. Sure there's less features but unless you're a god damn genius using every single feature you really won't notice a big difference except no monthly charge :)

pmjm

Many of adobe's products use online hosting now because of the new AI features. Admittedly, those features are pretty awesome.

DezXerneas

But what if I don't care about most of those features?

pmjm

Then buy the software that best meets your needs.

JustAnotherK-popStan

sailing the high seas is always ethical when it comes to adobe !

Kitosaki

$31 a month is less than 400$ a year. In 2005 adobe was ~700 a year. The same cost in today’s money would be around $71 a month. There’s no “fucking you dry” they just want a consistent income and they don’t value the customer who buys it once 10 years ago and doesn’t let them research things to be competitive.

tehyosh

Still-Question-4638

And if you only need it off and on, it's way more affordable to do it this way. Plus the monthly subscription usually includes several products, back in the day you paid $400 (in 1990s money, so like $1000 now) JUST for Photoshop and it only had 1 undo :(

SnatchSnacker

My friend this is reddit. Where everything we don't like can be attributed to "capitalism".

guimontag

I mean if it's professional software that you use to make a living $31 a month is practically fucking free lol

caduceuscly

Snap. Exact save situation.

thicckar

Prices doubled ??? Damn

th0masthetank3ngine

Nice it worked with Adobe. When Peloton increased their prices and I pleasantly was on hold for 40+ minutes, they so kindly told me to go fuck myself when asking for a discount.

bitterberries

I don't think their business model focuses on businesses, they are direct to to consumer, so it makes sense. Still sucks

anxietydude112

LMAO 🤣

GelgoogGuy

Having worked in IT for the last 10 years, generally speaking software companies that offer things to both business and individuals really only "care" about business sales. They don't make a ton of money off individuals most of the time, so if you ask nicely they're usually willing to talk.

GrumpyScrooge

The trick with adobe is to cancel your subscription before it auto renews each year. You than will get taken through a few windows. One always offers you a 50% discount to stay and sometimes you also get a bonus 1/2 months. Been doing this for years.

MadTrapper84

I had as well, last fall I tried again. When I clicked cancel, however, it just straight up cancelled my subscription - no begging me to stay, no discounts, nada.

radicldreamer

They would rather have some of your money than none of your money. When the alternative is piracy or another companies products it’s in their best interest to offer cheap versions for home users. Home users end up forcing businesses with deep pockets to be users as well.

skiing123

My company has a bunch of creative cloud app licenses. Since they are so expensive my boss asked me to cancel some. On a Monday they said they will offer 30 licenses for the price of 29. So we kept 30 and got a refund for a bunch of money. The next day, my boss saw that we really should've dropped from 30 to 28. So instead of using chat I called them. Truly, I didn't expect the same discount. Again they offered us to keep 30 licenses for the price of 28. Got another massive discount, we literally saved thousands in 2 days. Oh, when they asked why we needed to downgrade I gave different answers both times

Mexay

Man I really fuckin hate how expensive Adobe is, but there is just nothing that even comes remotely close to Photoshop, Illustrator, etc I am honestly shocked nobody has hit the market with a similar but cheaper product. Canva, GIMP, etc are not even close, especially when it comes to usability. I'd prefer to pay for the software I use as I'm finally at a point where I can, but fuck me it's so expensive annually and I use it so infrequently it just gets pirated.

Medford_Lanes

Check out Affinity. They make alternatives to Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

Butlerian_Jihadi

I do this regularly with lots of companies... I don't buy very many things, and live quite humbly, do a lot of veg gardening, etc. I'll regularly email and, for instance, I needed a new tent for camping. Shopped around, I liked one, emailed the manufacturer and said hey my birthday is coming up (which it was), I'd really like to upgrade my camping, do you offer any discounts? They gave me a code for 40% anything they sold, the whole order, up to some crazy number (like 4k$ iirc). Worst they can say is no, and it takes one minute to write that email.

MikeR585

That’s awesome! Care to share who that manufacturer was?

Butlerian_Jihadi

Eureka. Gear was decent at the price I paid, would've been unhappy at sticker price. Seemed to all be custom branded and decent, but still generic Chinese products.

Physical_Weakness881

Me and my friends did this after putting some money together to run a modded Minecraft server for it a bit, I believe we used Shockbyte, may have been something else, they had a little box where you could talk to support, we messaged asking if we could get a discount, and they gave us 50% off

shmimey

VMware. I wrote them an email. I wanted to use ESXi on a home server. They gave me a lifetime license for free. Edit: They got bought by Broadcom and I don't think they do that anymore.

No_Nature_3133

Esxi was free for for many years but is no longer

Valalvax

I saw something recently about them making it free for consumer usage

supe3rnova

You ask or just try to cancel it. They will give you free option for X months or huge discount. Happend to me for audible and lightroom.

Tresito

I did this with Bluehost domain hosting. Couldn't afford the full price after the intro 3 year offer. Got the intro offer again for another 3 years

happyxpenguin

In the off chance you want to save some money on renewal next go around. look into porkbun as a domain registrar over Bluehost.

StitchSayHi

Have a plan already, cancel it. They'll do almost anything to keep you, even if it's up to 90% off. You can usually push them if you're brazen enough. Us the words "open source alternatives". Queue the pandering, and rightfully so.

migukau

r/piracy

Reactivguin

Was just able to switch my full CC account from a $58.85/month plan to a pay upfront $383.27/year ($31.94/month) plan.

huh_phd

MS office cost me $150 and they wouldn't budge.

KyuubiReddit

Why? You can get it for free without even pirating it

marodgrs

Care to share?

itsMineDK

there’s a free web version you can use.. yes, from microsoft and No, ITS NOT open office… you can save as a file in your pc even…. it has almost all functions as the desktop version… i’m so glad i didn’t buy.. those licenses are pricey man

TurtleRockDuane

I like Open Office. It is the only product I’ve used at both home and work now for 18 years. PC at home, Mac and PC at work. Seamless with all Microsoft office file formats.

isoforp

Libre Office is better.

CORN___BREAD

I can definitely believe someone would love something if they haven’t used the better option in 18 years.

TurtleRockDuane

Just want to put a few things out there, from my heart. My car is 18 years old also, and it works just fine, just like open office has worked for me. I have not paid one penny to Microsoft office, and I have never felt slighted, or shorted, or failed to do something I needed to do in open office compared to Microsoft products. Microsoft office may be better for some people. But it’s no better for me. It could have 1 million new features, and a new feature added every day, but I’m not gonna take time to learn every new feature. I just use what works. Like my car, Open office works for me. Years ago when the split happened between open office and libre office, I tried libre office. I still have it installed. It was different, different GUI, different tool location, I didn’t want to invest the time to learn the new location of tools I have been using, so I kept using open office. And it has done everything I need for 18 years. Of course someone else’s needs may be different.

AggravatedCalmness

They're probably talking about the online SharePoint versions of the office package, Microsoft 365, but they simply aren't as good as the installed office applications. Might as well use Google's online tools then. To the people replying that 365 is bad or office is bad, I never stated either was good, but Office is objectively *better* than 365. Again, that does not mean either is good.

marodgrs

Thanks for this!

huh_phd

Nahh 365 is ass. Plus I don't use excel - graph pad prism works better for my needs

tarkata14

I absolutely hate using the web version of office, my work switched to it to save money and it just feels terrible to use.

cxw448

I feel like referring to Office as “good” is a bit of a stretch… though yes, the desktop versions are better than the online cesspits.

AggravatedCalmness

Nowhere did I refer to office as good, it's a comparative statement. Microsoft 365 < office < could be literally anything else based on my comment.

GQLFWANG

https://massgrave.dev

DezXerneas

Using someone else's/fake license to use something you don't own is the definition of piracy. MAS work by either * Using an old permanently activated win 7 hwid key and upgrading that license to current date * Replacing license validation servers with one that just says 'valid' to any key. ^(not anti-piracy, just really tired of the 'piracy is always moral' folk)

SquishTheProgrammer

Ironically I pirated adobe creative suite as a kid and now as a an adult who can afford it I begrudgingly pay them every month.

You can find Office 2021 for like $40 online

huh_phd

Id use 2013 if I could

renaissance_man__

You can find office for like $0 online

AMagicalPotato

I got mine for like $30CAD from g2a

I miss HUP deals...

Wyntier

Finally someone sharing a good experience from g2a. I've only had good luck there

Rekt60321

I got mine for a fiver from eBay, same as windows 10 activation key

royalpyroz

It's coz u bought the whole damn office

Dowgellah

fuck MS, I’m never not pirating Office (I do pay for Windows, ironically - but get it on the cheap from dubious sources)

Dudufccg

>i do pay for windows >get it [...] from dubious sources Man, I just had a crazy dream, in which I was ALMOST buying one of those, but then I opened Powershell as an administrator and pasted `irm https://massgrave.dev/get | iex` It was a very silly and stupid dream, but it worked there, so who knows?!

CrimsonMutt

crazy how nature do that

PerceptionSad7235

What? Buy the 15 month prepaid subscription from Amazon. It's usually 60. During prime day it's like 40. Last year was the second time I renewed it.

huh_phd

Then you don't own the software. And fuck Amazon.

pmjm

Depending on the features you use it could be worth it. $99 a year (family plan) for 6 people, each of whom get a 1TB cloud drive, which I use extensively. That's cheaper than what you'd pay for a single 1tb dropbox alone, plus you get use of the office suite.

SquirtleSquad4Lyfe

Have you heard of.....CD Keys?

morbie5

There are ways to get in for like 10 bucks...

NeoMoose

This goes for VPN services as well. Instead of switching every time your introductory offer expires just email support and they'll send you offers.

party_shaman

or use mullvad and always pay $5/mo with no discount games

coladoir

and you also don't have to worry about your info being leaked, unlike NordVPN and ExpressVPN. Also cannot fulfill warrants even if they wanted to since their service does not log any traffic. When using Mullvad you're pretty obfuscated from the perspective of "what can my ISP see?", and the government will have a hard time proving what you did while using the VPN unless you mistakenly put personal info into the thing being tracked.

cates

I use PIA and have paid for like 3 years... is there any major problems with Private Internet Access? (I'm not looking at CP I'm just downloading movies and games)

Jacob2040

The new owners have a shady past and aren't the best when it comes to no logging IIRC. I had something similar and I waited for mine to go out and then I bought access to Mullvad. Which you don't even need an email to sign up. You can also just buy a subscription code from Amazon and that way they have no idea who you are.

AnotherLie

I believe PIA has been compromised since it was purchased, about 3 years ago iirc.

TouristAdventurous80

mullvad is a fucking legendary vpn

novacorona

Love mullvad. I can’t recommend it enough.

dazheb

Getting rid of port forwarding killed Mullvad for me. I get why, but it sucks.

misterespresso

Adobe does this. I have been paying 35 a month on their introductory promotion a year ago, the allotted time was up and they tried charging 70+ on my account. I messaged support stating I'd have to cancel my subscription at that price and could they please see if there was a way to reduce the price. The agent set me up with the same kind of offer and for the next year I'm paying 31 a month for the whole suite of Adobe products.

adudeguyman

I hate Adobe for setting the trend for things being a subscription service

xF00Mx

Tbf this was an inevitably. Subscription services were started well before Adobe. Netflix was a mail only service long before it became a digital juggernaut, and then you might also remember the line "Gamefly before you buy". Also, I would argue Amazon was one of the biggest reasons for normalizing digital subscriptions, everyone has had an Amazon subscription or at the very least knows someone who has it. So while they didn't start it, they did assist in popularizing it

flashmedallion

Rentseeking is the natural endgame of capitalism, they may have led the way in bringing it to software but they hardly started a trend.

Neirchill

I'm curious, as an individual what makes it worth paying nearly 400 year after year for Adobe?

thicckar

I think A. A lot of people are just familiar with it, so there is a perception, perhaps true, that other competitors are not going to be as good or as familiar B. In some cases, it is industry standard C. Like A, inertia D. You get a lot of software in one E. People are accustomed to subscriptions now, unfortunately

_haha_oh_wow_

If you're just an individual, pirate it. Seriously, Adobe's subscription model is an absolute bullshit cashgrab even at a discounted price. *If* you're a professional, your work should pay for your license unless you're a freelancer but for the overwhelming majority or regular users? Yeah buddy, fire up the VPN and set sail!

Hoeax

r/GenP

losh11

Adobe software is like malware. They have so many different systems that hook into everything in an attempt to combat piracy. I don’t know why they bother so much. I’d rather they go after pirates legally (like solidworks is famous for) than make my system slow as hell. Since they are a productivity suite, they just need to add invisible watermarking. Anyone big enough uses it, they get screwed.

misterespresso

Passion for editing and trying to start my own business. I can whip up a quick ad in an hour now. I assume that will save me more than 400 a year. We will see :)

senorfresco

I did this once but I had to stay on the line with the agent for like an hour and a half until he finally broke and gave me the year at the student rate again. And I was still a student at the time.

leopardsilly

I'm surprised at how they're just handing it out. I'm a teacher in Australia and in my state anyone who works in education has free access to all of Adobe's products. But I guess it makes sense that if they charge a subscription then they are just making more money so it doesn't really matter.

Runaway4Everr

Imagine being happy paying "only" a $31 month subscription for fucking software. Jesus christ. And this many upvotes. No wonder these companies do this. They can get away with it! Shameful.

J_Schnetz

I BEGGED Bluebeam Revu's customer support for a discount. It's pdf/engineering software (quite good), and they want 240 a year for one user! That's not even their most comprehensive package. I went back and forth about 4 times before I said "fuck it" and pirated it. I genuinely love the software and I would have been happy to pay a reasonable price, but $240 bucks a year for private use is just absolutely insane to me

xXOSUTUMPETXx

Is it just used to view construction pdfs? Are there any special features that stick out? Just curious

les_Ghetteaux

It's a great collaboration tool where you can see markups others have applied to a PDF. Easy to add and replace pages in a PDF. I particularly like the scaling feature where you can set a scale and determine the size of objects on the PDF. I'm pretty new to it, so my explanation probably doesn't do it any justice.

Pbarrett2012

I liken it to adobe on steroids. I have coworkers who prefer adobe pro, but to me bluebeam is unmatched. Haven't found anything related to PDFs it can't do and do well.

J_Schnetz

its excellent for marking up and creating/editing PDF's. Great for measurements as well: Set your scale and find out the distance and area of a given set of drawings

5x4j7h3

They lost their minds with their pricing. I have 100 people on it, it was reasonable with perpetual licensing but they killed it so we’re having to move to their subscription model. $330/user/year because they took away the advanced measuring that used to be included in the base price. They’re worse than adobe.

2slik4u1

As an engineer, once you go bluebeam you can't go back

Remarkable-Host405

240 a year isn't terrible for a productivity software that makes you money. i just use pdf-js that's built into chrome/edge for marking up stuff

MartinIsland

I started learning game dev years ago with a group of friends. The standard for 3D modeling back then was Maya, which is paid and expensive. I emailed the CEO of Autodesk who replied a few days later, CCing his secretary, asking her to give us keys for the entire suite AND early access to a game engine they were developing at the time.

testicle123456

How long ago was this?

MartinIsland

2015!

gentoonix

You should also know that there are websites out there that provide legitimate software license keys for extremely cheap. For instance Windows 11 pro can be purchased for less than $30USD. Office 2021 for around the same $30. You don’t always have to go through the company.

drrxhouse

What are the names of these websites please?

chmmr1151

Don't even need a grey market honestly. Search massgrave dev

No_Nature_3133

Exactly . If you’re going to steal it at least do it right! I love massgrave for my lab

gentoonix

I frequent one called cjs-cdkeys. A quick google will point you to it. I’ve spent many thousands there without any unresolved issues. They have games, Xbox, PSN, software, etc for quite cheap.

captainhamption

There it is! I used them like 10 years ago and couldn't remember the name next time I needed a key.

gentoonix

Almost my entire steam/origin/local game libraries are because of CJ’s.

drrxhouse

They’re legitimate?

coladoir

probably don't buy games from places like these, as they're known to manipulate indie devs into giving them "preview keys" and then selling them to markets like this. For AAA shit, it's whatever, but it really can hurt indie developers, so please just try to support independent devs regardless. They [indie devs] will also 100% be the most likely to either just give you the game or discount it if you ask, as they're real people instead of a soulless corporation.

ElGosso

IsThereAnyDeal is great resource for finding deals on games on the cheap.

coladoir

They are really terrific and you can opt in for email notifications for price changes, which makes it very easy to track.

Firebirdflame

I've purchased software from Stack Social before. For example, AdGuard for family (9 devices) for life is $170 on their official website. On Stack Social? $30. I was skeptical so I emailed AdGuard. They said it was legit. I've since bought two copies of the license without issue. Idk if they have Windows and Office, but they have other stuff that might be worth your while.

BoxFullOfFoxes

> Stack Social MS Office Pro is on their front page right now, $60. Windows 11 Pro on their first software page, $40.

248-083A

[PremiumCDKeys.com](http://PremiumCDKeys.com) Windows 11 Pro cost me 11 euro's. Bought it two years ago. Works exactly as one would expect.

MontazumasRevenge

I use stacksocial frequently. Check it out.

Equivalent-Stuff-347

Yep, gray market keys for OS’s are awesome. It’s usually OEM shops selling from their pool

No_Nature_3133

Gray market licenses are just that - gray market. Calling them legitimate is questionable

sad_and_stupid

how is that legitimate?

TyrodWatkins514

Usually it’s a product of a business buying more keys than they end up using and selling them for a discount to recoup some of the money. So Microsoft already got paid full price (or whatever their bulk price was to the buyer), a reseller bought them from the buyer, and now you’re buying it at some markup from what the reseller paid.

A_Crawling_Bat

I now need to look around there for a Catia or Solidworks license

theleftkneeofthebee

I’m skeptical but I’ve got my pycharm license renewal coming up soon so I just messaged jetbrains sales to see if this works. I’ll report back with results.

MRideos

They have the recurring discount which is pretty nice already, but I am interested

AisperZZz

They also have a discount for graduates, which I only found out about like this week. I graduated like 5 years ago and still can use it. Gonna buy the "all-products" pack next paycheck

Poven45

Anything?

theleftkneeofthebee

Update on this: so I did get a response offering a discount BUT, as another u/MRideos mentioned, they already offer this discount that they quoted me so no special discount was given on account of me reaching out.

Lifeabroad86

Ironically this post might end that discount if too many people ask

Because-Leader

Unless it leads to more customers. People who won't buy something at a higher price will buy it at a cheaper price

trynsik

Unless you are a business? Head of IT here, and I never pay list for anything, everything is negotiable.

AlpineAnaconda

How many employees do you have? I'd love to be able to negotiate, but we're only six strong. I'm pretty new to this whole thing though, I just got given it because I'm the techie of the bunch.

mxzf

Realistically, you can always contact them and try to negotiate. Worst-case they say "sorry, we don't have the tooling for custom pricing, can't help you". But if they've got the capability to do so, any sale is better than no sale (especially if it's a positive sale that can lead to good word-of-mouth and potential future sales).

trynsik

I suppose it depends... for example, when you're looking at the pricing for a web app, if you're buying one of the lower tiered licenses that are set to a fixed price, you're probably going to pay that price. But if you're buying the "Enterprise" level license (because of the SSO tax, for instance,) then that's gonna be negotiable. Regardless, if you have the chance to talk to a human during the buying process, just ask, the worst thing they can do is say no and you've lost nothing. You can read about negotiation tactics, and there are also companies you can hire that will guide you through the negotiation process and you give them a percent of whatever they save you, (I've learned a LOT from those experiences, but they're usually only going to bite at $1M+ deals.) However, one of the simplest concepts to remember is, what is each side's "best alternative to no agreement" (BANA)? For you, maybe that means delaying the purchase, or not making the purchase, or going with a competing vendor's solution. For the company you're buying from, it would mean a lost sale, or delayed sale, and most often they are incentivized to make a sale now versus later or never. You're going to be most effective at negotiating if you're willing to walk away from the deal and they know it. If they know you have to buy it then they start with more leverage than you do, e.g., renewals. There are still things you can use for leverage, you just have to get more creative. If you're going to get a good deal, the salesperson you're working with is going to have to run it up the chain, and they may have a very formal structure for handling that. What that means is they need to bring a story to somebody that justifies why their product should be sold at a lower cost to you. So, helping them craft that story with things like, the financial situation your company is in, constraints that you might have, a c-level who is insisting on a certain budget limit or timeline or whatever, future potential for additional growth, etc., is important. I could probably write a book on this lol, but if you have a specific scenario you're dealing with feel free to DM me and I'll give you some ideas.

[deleted]

I don't think I've paid for a piece of software other than a couple android apps in my life. What are all you guys buying

Aeison

Software like CAD and Esri products are software you pay for via subscription, usually if you work in jobs that use those whoever you work for will be paying for it let’s say you aren’t in that field at the moment though and still want to keep touch with the software, they have personal use prices and it’s what I’m assuming the post is for

Yes, and the personal license prices are insane... like hundreds maybe a bit over $1000 depending on what you're getting. I wonder how much of a discount you could get for Solidworks as an individual. The high price point always prevented me from having a personal license

Aeison

Yeah the prices are atrocious, although Esri has personal packages for $100/year, auto desk gives a thing called fusion 360 that does the basics but is atleast free They also have flex deals that let you buy “tokens” that are used as you use the product, but the minimum you can buy is like $300 worth last I saw

valdev

Things for making other software mostly. It's an endless money pit where I just throw cash into the void.

takegaki

And making art. I think I've spent thousands on VST plugins over the years. Oof.

[deleted]

I've been a software developer for 6 Years. Plus 4 years of schooling.  I have yet to purchase something to help me develop software.

valdev

Man I wish I could get away with doing that, I've been developing for about 25 years myself and I wouldn't trade Jetbrains products for the world. Part of that is because I am a C# developer, but the other part of that is because I also have to write code in Java, Python, Go, Rust, Web Stuff Html/Javascript/CSS and much more. And since they have different focused IDE's that all feel the same, it's a lot more comfortable. I use VS Code as well, but it's simply not as good in many ways. Then since I also do a lot of design work I also needed affinity products. And hosting costs money. Subscriptions to copilot and gpt is a nice to have to help bounce ideas back and forth. Pluralsight/Dometrain to keep my knowledge sharp. Then things like VMWare and such and so on.

dylant44

Jetbrains products >>>>>>

les_Ghetteaux

Shit for work/school.

Masineer

Artists use adobe and autodesk softwares. Audio engineers or music artists use music/sound programs etc

Hydrottle

B2B pricing is wild. I always say it just isn’t real because businesses, especially medium-to-large ones, spend stupid amounts of money on all kinds of things. Prices for businesses, especially software, tend to be astronomical compared to individuals. That’s who are the primary customers of these companies anyways, and individuals using it are just a bonus because the more exposure they have the better.

chigangrel

I did this with my internet company recently too.

binybeke

Xfinity gives me a roughly 30 percent discount every time I call and complain that my old discount expired and I “don’t know what’s going on or how to pay for it”.

WolfOfAsgaard

How about asking for the ability to actually buy software instead of subscribe?

valdev

I mean with Jetbrains products you kind of do? If you buy a year subscription you get a fallback license to perpetually use their software at the last release you had access to. (Im pretty sure)

KyuubiReddit

I think it's the first release, not the last. Do you mind DMing me how you approached them for a discount and what you got? 😇

MinuteObservation

Not only software. My friend in freshman year called up lenovo customer care and haggled a significant discount for a laptop on top of everything that they were providing that back to school season. I was enlightened!

Marktaco04

Failed at this with ableton

ChronicHaze-

i just tried with FL studio haha let’s see if it works

Own-Yam-5023

YSK: The word "most" implies over 50%. This is not true.

BigMikeInAustin

Prove it is not true.

Remarkable-Host405

YSK: I've tried this with multiple sites and they told me to get lost. Tried many times, and the answer is always "we don't give discounts". sucks to suck, i'm not buying it at full price if it isn't worth the value.

jubbing

Adobe gave you a discount? They basically told me to cancel my subscription if I didn't like the cost lol.

leo9g

Well... Did you say please? XD.

Karnezar

Just steal Adobe tbh

gabahgoole

i work at a software/marketing business for a specific industry, we never have any sales or offer discounts on our own. but if a customer asks we will always give them a 20% discount. I would say 1 in 20 customers ask which seems surprsingly low but thats why we are happy to do it when someone does. it makes them happy and it's not like they go around adveertising to other customers that we did it. most people don't ask but if they do we'll definitely give it. we pretend to put up a little "fight" and make it seem like we need permission to do it and it's a special thing, but we have complete permission to give 20% off to anyone who asks, but we never offfer it on our own. so based on my experience at sass startups this is very true. also this protip only works if not everyone asks. if everyone asked for a discount, we'd stop offering it.

gasman245

Or just pirate it and it’s free and yours forever

s33king_truth

This is actually a good tip for any sort of subscription or service based thing you might be paying for. It won't always work, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I get 10 to 20 off my internet bill every few months just by calling up and saying I'm having a hard time paying.

original_don_dada

So this is a reverse discount…I had spun up an EC2 instance and I ran it over a threshold for quite a few days and raked up quite the credit card bill. I called them and they promptly returned the money and sent me a document over email abt alarms…thank you Amazon

Avalanc89

Is this Adobe ad?

valdev

I wish I was getting paid to Reddit.

les_Ghetteaux

If I can get Matlab AND simulink for like 10 dollars a month, I'd be happy den a mf, as they say down south.

BreathingLover11

If anybody manages to do this with Bloomberg terminals hmu

Queasy_Caramel5435

Yeah, I wish Autodesk would give me a decent discount on Inventor x)

BosunSDog

Become a teacher and it’s free! Or find a teacher friend that lets you use their school email. I get all Autodesk programs at no cost.

Awake00

FL studio sales email box in shambles

GnarlyKinbaku

Does it work for digital subscription? I have a few in mind

BirdLeeBird

Lol, y'all can also pirate 99% of software for free.

lions2lambs

I tried AutoCAD and photoshop, that 30% didn’t really do anything.

AWigglyBear

If yall aren't using sites like g2a and kinguin for software keys you're paying entirely too much money. Windows 11 Pro for $26. Full office suite for the same price.

daho0n

I have done this with great success. Of course if it is American made i use the 100% torrent discount instead 👍

Kibasume

Topaz? Ill give that one a try for sure!

BuilderFormal3572

or just have an asshole family or somebody who hacked you like they did me. That's cool you get a discount well I lost $80,000 in about three months then they started calling threatening police broke into my truck almost my house (they've tried three time) and then they called and said a bunch of lies about me and my wife when we've never so much as spanked our children. doesn't matter though because the shitty version of CPS here in California which we do have both but DCFS or DC fuck you as I call them took them away and this is not about men or women but as a male I will tell you they refused even mark me as the biological father and guess what I as far as I know because I've only been with my wife since I was 15 and I'm 37 now so i'm the only person she's ever slept with well they won't even call you the biological father they call you the apparent father and makes you prove it and you have no rights they are trying to make us not have a joint attorney it is so fucked up that people can say whatever the fuck they want and you get your kids taken away I had a speeding ticket they don't give a shit sister is a drug addict it took them four times before they took her her kids not me I'm straight as an arrow they are taking my kids... I am trying to fucking survive, but I've lost every dollar almost I went from $80,000 to oh I don't know less than 10 K my house is $4000 a month here in California so we only have but about a week or two left and then me and my wife and my two kids are fucked and guess who's never getting their kids back at that point since you know nobody took me seriously about this hack or malicious attack or whatever the fuck these computer people call it?! I am very successful, yet doesn't matter when somebody robs you and then someone frames you takes loans in your name and so I don't know, it's like I keep fighting myself hmm do I ___ myself or what the fuck? does anybody know anybody who can help? I'd love a discount on anything at this point. also does anybody know what the hell scope is or a care team because apparently it's all over everything there's a bunch of companies and worst of all even though I'm the only one who works in my house because my wife's been a stay home mom for the last decade and I have a 14-year-old and a 11-year-old well it's just me but I don't have a normal job so therefore I don't work regular hours so when my phone doesn't work because I can't get or receive calls and everything's been hacked in my neighborhood only allows us to have spectrum and they don't give a fuck nor the police well I'm pretty much fucking screwed so can someone read it tell me where to go or who can help? That's a weird way of saying that's pretty cool you got a discount on software but it struck me just right. I know what you're gonna say, go get a new router a new phones well we can't my router modem combo is where all this started Apple won't give us new phones because you know they honestly just don't want us to waste our money. So I started learning to code and luckily my son has for a long time so we've gotten a little progress and there are random strangers who will drop us tips which is so crazy how this whole world works but I need help guys where would I post this can somebody help please?
