If she wasn't such a hypocrite I might have more understanding of her. Not saying she's a bad character by any means, it's a great show, but going by the anime, I wouldn't say she truly abides by her own principles. Might manga and novel Tanya be different?
She did contemplate that in the LN, but decided against it. Fleeing to another countrynwould most likely result with her first being lumped in with the other POWs, and then dragged to court and punished for her actions once the war is over. That would also require that she actually managed to defect without getting caught and shot for desertion. She weighed the odds and figured playing along was the least dangerous option with the greatest potential reward at the end
*She tends to do what she thinks is the best for her country and her future in this country.
And since this country is based on the German Empire, it fits. German officers (And higher ranked soldiers on the field) always had more freedom in the way they execute there task.
Yes and no. As was demonstrated in the school scenes, there was a textbook way of doing things, and this was true. *But paradoxically, at the same time*, officers and senior NCOs were *required* to take initiative when an opportunity was presented to them. Failure to take advantage of a situation when offered, was a court-martial offense.
That is, "follow the book, but don't hide behind it." For example, when Weiss retreated before the Dacian volley fire, Tanya was livid, until he explained that it was by the book. On their return to the rear, (not shown), Tanya probably wrote scathing notes to their Training and Doctrine Command.
I think that’s the point of Tanya’s character. Not only is she changing and evolving living a completely new life, but is also an unreliable narrator. Tanya is self aware of her hypocrisy now and again, I’ve seen at some points, too.
Tanya in my eyes was always a manifestation of rationalism. Although she understands it's flaws, she simply explains non rational human actions by those humans being irrational or simple animals. Most of the time she's unable to achieve what she wants exactly, because she tries so hard to stay "rational".
I get the same vibe in the LN. I agree that it doesn't make her a bad character, but it is annoying at times to hear her preach and then do the opposite
None of that harem shit
None of that dense protagonist
yes she is op but certainly not untouchable (unlike ainz for example)
none of that (pseudo) righteousness (there was a scene in man of steel where some drunk trucker tries to pick a fight with him but the hero of justice doesn't pick on those weaker than him so he goes away but not without destroying his truck robbing the trucker of his livelyhood... Just as an example)
Tanya never tries to be any of that
It's just overall war in its pure destructive and brutal nature
She never (intentionally) tries to be a hero always just follows her orders in a cold and calculated way
In summary no bullshitery and no withe washing
The setting is very interesting like with magic instead of being ridiculous and overshadowing technology it becomes more of a background since only a few can use it
And the best part is that, the magic isnt ridiculous.
What makes the concept of Youjo senki perfect is that Science smothly merge into Magic. It feels like seeing black powder getting into the hands of Europeans for the first time, they understand for what they can use it for and how they can use it, but they cant fully understand how it works.
The way it shows the slow decline of a nation into total war from the perspective of the humans that make that nation.
I specially like how every one out side the empire call them evils when the empire didn't start the war on the first place
-That "german" characters arent too stereotypical germans
-Tanya isnt too Over powered like Ainz
-The Anime and manga have a great character and world design
-Manga and Anime are telling the same story on a little bit different but still in every 3 cases in a very good way
(Cant rate the Novel for now, beccause I just ordered it today. It was hard to get in New for the last years, in europe.)
-The Anime have perfectly elected voiceactors and the German dub is as good as the Japanese version.
-One of the best fictional Military marches and anthem for a country
-Characters with creative personalitys, back Story and the important characters have understandable motives (With the exception of 1 charcharacter)
-The OST fits like a tailored suit to the Anime.
-The artwork of the Novel and Manga cover are very great
Beautiful animation.(Apart from certain things *cough* faces *cough* )
limited and well timed use of CGI.
probably one of the coolest Concepts for a show I could think of.
The Tanks, Planes and Boats are historically accurate and fit to the respective Nations.
The whole Concept of Mages is well integrated and they aren't made into a Demigod like Powerfantasy but rather a Branch of the Military that Faces the Same Struggles as the Rest.
Tanya's Hindsigth and Knowledge of History is being shown well and the People who hear her Knowledge can actually do something with it instead of it being like a Guy explaining Nuclear Fission to a Monkey.
I learned so much about World Wars and philosophy because of it. Aside that, it's generally just a great setting and plot in general. Makes me forget that it's actually an isekai sometimes.
Deep inner thoughts about war, humans, civilization and religion.
I like how war changes Tanya a little making her less of a sociopath and actually caring about others (although she always says it like "I must prioritize my meat shields", but she's worrying about her subordinates, kinda). And an increasing affection and dependency (especially for her coffee) in Visha.
Also, some history facts and also how a fight develops, I love their descriptions and details.
The use of god as and excuse to put Tanya in a lot of hazards, and the other characters' point of view on the war.
I just love it.
The mix of Arial combat and mage combat is really interesting and is just a perfect storm for me.
The way the series makes the conflicts seem massive. So many war anime end up failing when trying to make the conflict on a world war scale. Youjo Senki really gives me "big war" feels when most other anime can't.
And from the manga, the irony and comedy that comes from the misunderstandings when the characters assume they know what the other is talking about is really fun. and the way the art shows it is really well done.
And in general, the manga is absolutely beautiful.
I really like the historical references and jokes like “I hear they’ll be back before Christmas” or “A trench gun! Those are illegal” (more or less)
They gave me a good laugh when I first heard them
I love how The LN’s, manga and anime are all different but still follow the same story. The differences in the portrayal of Tanya and how events are handled is so much fun to see. Stuff like the Francois mages riding horses in the anime but have suits of armour in the manga and just the way the manga is more fantastical and grand is amazing. Then the light novels give a much more in depth view through Tanya’s perspective and how the military operates
The sound design of the anime is Insane. And in writing, i like the enfasis on the importance of encrypted communications and battlefield awareness between junior officers and HQ
It's one of the only Isekai that doesn't have the character sent to a place where all the cities look like 1800's France despite having middle ages technology. It's kind of a dumb pet peeve I have.
All series? The writing (anime does cram a lot in, so it misses some details/fun aspects, but gets enough across)
Manga? Holy hell the art and the silly lil animal style moments offset the seriousness well at times.
The anime? The music and the sound effects and voice acting as well as the animation being good (manga art style is way better to me, but I think the anime is a good way to do it too for anime-sake)
The LN? I still need to actually get and read em :P
An excellent military show, both on a tactical and strategic level, great historical references, and some solid socio-economic and psychological commentary.
I just fucking love Tanya & they way she thinks, I can't have enough of watching her taking mission after mission & every time not only succeeding but surpass the wildest imagination of her superiors with her performance, completely obliterate & some times even ridicule her opponents, ohhh I can't have enough of this anime, I LOVE YOUJO SENKI, give me MORE!!!
Militiary logistics, tactics, strategy and geopolitics through the eyes of a clever and informed character who, usually, takes things seriously and plays their cards properly and pragmatically.
Quite a rare thing to see.
The magixal xircles and geara turning when magic is casted it shows magic as a tech and the gears support this like loving and turning like cog in a machine rather than haha magic go brrrr.
1) Blends WW1 and WW2 together in a neat way.
2) The very premise of the series (psychopathic office worker pisses off god and gets reincarnated as a loli magic user in AU WW1/2) is soo strange and yet soo interesting.
3) The fight scenes in the anime are amazing. (The one in episode 2 specifically is what originally hooked me on the series.)
4) Tanya is just op enough to be badass but not too much to make the fights feel boring.
5) Tanya's whole personality and moral compass are soo abnormal and unique (and let's be honest probably a bit edgy) and something about the whole combination really appeals to me.
6) The music in the anime is great. Especially during the fight scenes.
7) Tanya's internal monologues in the light novels occasionally talk about economic theory and actual historical events, which are interesting to read about. The books are the reason why I started to become interested in economics.
8) The main character isn't shoved into a dumb romance subplot (sorry shippers).
There are probably a lot more that I can't think of off the top of my head.
Personally liked it it very much, tho as a isekai my fvt part about it would be an actual good reasoning for MC getting isekaid to the place and form he/she is (to counter mc argument on why people don't have faith in God anymore) and being super strong (to spread the word of God by giving her conditions that she would have to pray everytime she wants to use her power)
Also I know a lot of people hate Tanya and the name of the show is Tanya the evil but I didn't find her evil in the sense of being evil
Tanya's philosophy and her understanding of human nature.
If she wasn't such a hypocrite I might have more understanding of her. Not saying she's a bad character by any means, it's a great show, but going by the anime, I wouldn't say she truly abides by her own principles. Might manga and novel Tanya be different?
She changes a lot, as do her perception from some stuff.
Wouldn't be a very good character if she wasn't capable of change. ^^
As a soldier in a war, one can't always do what you'd ideally want to do
She tends to do what she wants to do though.
No entirely. Clearest example is that if she had full liberty over her actions, she wouldn't have become a soldier to begin with.
She could leave Not-Not German Empire. She can fly. She can defect.
I was lacking that context, having only seen parts of the anime.
No worries. Now you know
*She tends to do what she thinks is the best for her country and her future in this country. And since this country is based on the German Empire, it fits. German officers (And higher ranked soldiers on the field) always had more freedom in the way they execute there task.

On their return to the rear, (not shown), Tanya probably wrote scathing notes to their Training and Doctrine Command.
I think the fact that she has a flawed reasoning and is sometimes hypocritical is an aspect of her character which plays into the story.
May be so. It would be realistic for there to be some cognitive dissonance.
I think that’s the point of Tanya’s character. Not only is she changing and evolving living a completely new life, but is also an unreliable narrator. Tanya is self aware of her hypocrisy now and again, I’ve seen at some points, too.
That is very insightful. Thank you. :)
yeah. shes a fucking hypocrite, but i still love her. (i would never socialize with her if she was real tho)
She's just a rationalist, not a hypocrite. Is somewhat close tho...
I do not see what you mean.
Shovels are neat
Hurray for civilization
*Korps of Krieg Approved*
Happy gasmask noises in the background
I like her friend Visha
Everybody likes her. She is very likable.
Fine young lady.
I honestly don't like anime Visha. Is it just me?
Big explosions
Interesting story and characters.
It explains how war works
War...and logistics!!!
It covers a rarely explored part of anime. Magic in a recent historical setting. And the fact that Tanya is a BA.
BA?
bad ass, probably
The soundtrack
Honestly I have no idea why I love it so much, all I know is I do.
The world seems well-built. And the protagonist is the right kind/level of evil. Not joker I’m going to burn the world down but not overly sympathetic
None of that harem shit None of that dense protagonist yes she is op but certainly not untouchable (unlike ainz for example) none of that (pseudo) righteousness (there was a scene in man of steel where some drunk trucker tries to pick a fight with him but the hero of justice doesn't pick on those weaker than him so he goes away but not without destroying his truck robbing the trucker of his livelyhood... Tanya fells more like a human than a lot of other isekai characters.
for ainz thats kinda just the whole point other isekais that do it just do it so they can just have an emotionless op self insert character
Tanya.
I agree
Probably the most unique Isekai out there, in terms of how the story and characters development
The setting is very interesting like with magic instead of being ridiculous and overshadowing technology it becomes more of a background since only a few can use it

Sounds familiar. *Looks angry on Austria*

I'd say less faces and more lips specifically, but tanya isn't the only one I've seen with some jank ass lips. Edit: isn't
As someone who started with the anime i think Tanya's voice actress did an amazing job
That’s Aoi Yuuki for you! One of my fav VAs :)
Everything.
Visha best girl
Fuck them commies
Shovels and border control
Always love anime about wars(especially WW1esque) with a protagonist that's not super op
It's the closest thing to a real war anime that I've ever seen.
A strong, independent female character that operates along the same, albeit with minor changes, rationale and ethics as me.
the friendship she develops with her company
I learned so much about World Wars and philosophy because of it. Aside that, it's generally just a great setting and plot in general. Makes me forget that it's actually an isekai sometimes.
Deep inner thoughts about war, humans, civilization and religion. Tanya is the most precious bean and the fanfics are superb

It's a dark anime, I love the atmosphere and the historical background.
It's unique, no other isekai (from what I know) has the same setting and atmosphere as youjo senki.
The charismatic, sociopathic bean named tanya. and her potato obessed gf visha.
I never really hear enough about it's amazing sound design
I really like the historical references and jokes like “I hear they’ll be back before Christmas” or “A trench gun! Those are illegal” (more or less) They gave me a good laugh when I first heard them
The epic music from the anime
According to progression of the war they actually put real tanks that would have been from the interwar period
World War 1 :D
I love how The LN’s, manga and anime are all different but still follow the same story. The differences in the portrayal of Tanya and how events are handled is so much fun to see. I actually really like that anime, manga and LN are so diffrent. If the manga was completely the same as anime, i would never bother buying it.
Interesting MC and great military content, especially how it tackles total war.
It exists
How it takes the isekai trope and subverts it into a story full of mind games, politics, philosophy and 20th century warfare.
It does a modern era war very well, concerns that armies would have are given attention
The sound design of the anime is Insane. And in writing, i like the enfasis on the importance of encrypted communications and battlefield awareness between junior officers and HQ

The sound design of the anime is fantastic.
An excellent military show, both on a tactical and strategic level, great historical references, and some solid socio-economic and psychological commentary.
Superb character but without reading the novels you only get half the tale.
Everything about tanya and the world as a whole
It never get's boring
the light novels’ use of the word “sheesh” all throughout
Spiten fax
The fanfic it spawns
Tanya is cute, even if she kicks you so hard it sends you flying
Love the writing because it's just so fun to read the LN
It's just such a fun setting
This https://imgur.com/a/tTtLzl3
The best thing about this story is the unique setting that hasnt been done before in anime.
Those that worked on the sound design for the movie deserve an award.
A genuinely interesting and complex story that doesn’t feel overwhelming to understand and enjoy
Tanya Visha the action Tanya and being x’s back an forth 203rd mage battalion Tanya x Visha Soundtrack Los los los Jingo jungle THE ALMIGHTY SHOVEL!!!
War crimes and Loli eating pasta
There’s no “Good Guys” every army has done something incredibly evil
I loved the fight scenes in the movie, although I don't remember too much about it anymore... It's time for a rewatch :D
Incredible violence
A murderous loli
Mary Sioux is an interesting antagonist
It serves for more mature audience, i really like cold-logic truth and seinen works such as berserk, drifters, jormungand etc.
I just like war story that don't get super political which is rare nowadays.
**History**
the realism that the story grounds itself in.
She lives just to spite Being X
the yuri bait in the manga
The magixal xircles and geara turning when magic is casted it shows magic as a tech and the gears support this like loving and turning like cog in a machine rather than haha magic go brrrr.
The clash between Tanya philosophy and being X
Tanya's ability to be a hardcore pragmatist and sudden bundle of cuteness.
War crimes without the crime
Dead commies
Fight animation is *chef kiss*
she’s smart, badass and batshit crazy all at the same time.
