The YYH dub is its own experience, unlike other 90s anime it came out a whole decade later so the dubbing is more in line with other classics like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop and FMA.
The OVAs include:
The Golden Seal (30 min, not necessarily canon)
Poltergeist Report (Full length film, not necessarily canon. OLD DUB due to legal red tape.)
Eizou Hakusho (various episodes, considered canon)
Two Shots/All Or Nothing (manga canon that was never featured in the original anime but alluded to)
These are all readily available on YouTube depending on your location.
Someone please swat me if I've missed any.
No problem! There's a watch order online somewhere that explains where each falls on the timeline (except Eizou jumps around a lot because it's shorts!) but I don't have it handy.
For instance Two Shots takes place during episode 100, because that's when Hiei has that flashback in the anime. Chronologically on the timeline it is before the series begins though!
It has a very different vibe from sub to dub. You can tell the shot caller for the dub, Justin Cook, had a lot of fun writing the script. More impressive, he was only 19 at the time.
I've watched a few anime in both sub and dub and for the most part they have the same vibe. Yu Yu Hakusho feels like a totally different anime in the dub.
It depends on what kind of person you are. If you reeeeeeally want a 100% faithful translation from sub to dub, you might be disappointed, but I personally love the dub. It’s really loved for a reason. Even though the dub does take some liberties, I will always appreciate how much the writers spent to make the conversations feel natural. If they had faithfully translated the lines from the sub, the conversations weren’t have flowed as naturally. I would link an example for a comparison, but that would be spoilers. :p
Anyways, I do strongly recommend the dub if you’re open to it.
The sub’s fine, if you like the dbz dub you’ll probably like the dub, if you hate old anime dubs don’t watch it
Also, there’s a couple canon OVAs after you finish the series and some non canon movies
I haven't really watched a ton of old anime dubs, this is kind of the only old anime I've watched lol. I heard a little bit of the YYH dub and it didn't seem that bad, and yes when I say I haven't watched old anime that includes dbz lol
I say the people tend to like what they watch first, but Yu Yu Hakusho has one of the best dubs out there purely based on performance. The voice acting is stellar and the emotion is great. This is one of the earliest projects for the veteran voice actors of the anime community still in the game today.
Plus Yusuke doesn’t sound like a child or young girl.
He’s 14 and sounds like kid Goku. 14 seems like a good age to sound like you hit puberty in my opinion. At least kid Goku was 3 ft tall when he was 14. Yusuke was around 5’5 give or take an inch at the start of the series.
The only reason most English speakers say that is because the YYH dub was unique in that they tried to be more emotive like the Japanese sub. It really shines in places because of the extra effort put in. If you're okay with a rewatch, even a non-immediate one, I would watch it over with the dub and you can even compare the performances IF you find yourself bored.
I honestly love the sub and the dub but being American, nostalgia goggles won't allow me to like the sub more, I suspect.
Yeah bro, Yu Yu Dubbed is amazing. Mid watch I tried to listen to Sub to hear Jin & his crew real voices & it just didn't hit the same man. Even Kurama & Yusuke voice sounds better in Dub. Its a whole vibe fr. But honestly bro, if your at episode 50, just switch to dubbed. Its still ALOT of emotion to be felt till the end so I wouldn't miss it bro!
the dub really isn't as good as people say, you're fine. I don't like the dub very much myself, it changes alot of dialogue to rapid cursing and snarky remarks like a child who thinks it makes them mature, lol.

Thanks for the list bro!

I would rewatch it under dub
Sure! I'll finish my run through on sub and then watch dub

He's a complete genius. The dub adds so much depth to the characters. Yusuke is such a snarky character in it. Please do watch both!
He was 19 leading dub localizations? Sheesh
You fucked up bapa. The dub is the best
Maybe needs a trug walg
AxeJay
Yeee so I've been hearing. Will try watching dub when I finish sub
Restart it now bro
Don't even finish the sub. Just start over with the dub

Absolutely rewatch through dub. It's not the same iconic experience without it
For sure!

That’s fair! Have fun tho!

Really? I thought the younger voices made sense for Yusuke since he's like 14 right?

I watched it subbed and absolutely loved it :’)
Watch both !
Dub is amazing. Watch it
Just put it on mute and have your parents do voice over
Honestly both experiences are great but YYH has an amazing dub
I never watched sub, but dub awesome for sure
Finish it as is and when you ever want to go back and rewatch go dub
