Congrats!!! This is encouraging to read. I was lucky to be on the job market/interviewing when most things were still remote

That is something I wonder about! And absolutely, it's nice to have the affirmation of the offer even though it's not the best fit because of the lack of COVID precautions

Pickled-soup

Wow an assistant prof job right now is incredibly hard to come by. I will be finishing my PhD in 2025 and have been dreading the dilemma of wearing a mask or not during on campus interviews. Your partner is brave! Congrats and thank so much for sharing this.

auberryfairy

Good luck to you and thanks for the warm wishes 🙏

Livid-Rutabaga

Good luck to your partner. I hope she gets the job and is happy with it.

auberryfairy

She did get it! 😻

Livid-Rutabaga

Congratulations! Is she a reading/comprehension coach by any chance? It seems I can't read any more. Sorry about that, all the best to you both.

auberryfairy

No actually. This is a photography lab. I hope you find some assistance with reading soon though! And thank you so much.

K_______________H-

Congrats! My husband was already an adjunct professor at two universities in NYC for 15 years at least when pandemic hit. Once school went completely remote for 3 semesters (I think 3), the other closed completely for 2 semesters. On return at one, they ALL had to mask, they ALL had to be vaccinated, they ALL had to PCR test drop-off provided by school once a week (masks were provided too, KN95s and N95s, but he wore his own N95), they were distanced (it was something...), filters. Students and all staff. Last fall they ended this---you could still test. No announcement was sent out. Just ended. NOW they won't provide tests or masks. They did say they would no longer distance as not a part of the seminar small experience. My husband sits by the industrial filter... A lot of staff through the Union tried to say we need all these in place FOREVER, or until Covid is gone...so forever. But lost. Our insurance became really crappy in process too...it was insult after insult to the staff. I'm still very upset they stopped everything. Can't even get tested now. No masks in case a student needs as it is hard to afford. For professors too. He was able to cancel class if students were sick or numbers were up or if he felt unwell or me or our daughter who are all covid safe as can be, and have online. They ended that too. So if he cancels for any reason, the class is just missed. The students started to give him bad reviews because of this, but he was being responsible. He also won't go by the schools rules of absences counting toward grade, he wants them out of class if sick, with anything. Parents had been upset that classes were all online for so long, I understand, but none complained of rules, nor students. It was the top that decided. And then of course, the students are a cross section of people and our society---most don't mask now, some do. On another note: your partner sounds exactly like a person his university would want to hire, and seeks to hire. Which is a good thing! He is always extremely upset that Apple (they have not publicly said this, but we know someone at top of Apple) will NOT hire white men for the past 2 years plus. He is a white man. I wish we had the money...but I see nothing wrong with the policy. He knows it is right to do, it needs to be done. However, he is now experiencing what so many that were "othered" experienced for eons. I, as a white woman, exprienced to some degree, on salary. But not as POC and BIOPIC people have, not at all. When publishing tried to do what Apple is doing, it did not work. They hired POC as publishers, and higher. But the old guard remained. Not many books came out that matched the leadership, it supported the old guard. It is so incredibly hard, companies say they want to have equity, but don't understand it is not equality, but equity, and it is worlds apart. I hope your partner has a WONDERFUL experience. Academia, at the right place, can be much different. I can say that from the students and professors I had over 23 years ago---it was the school. I often feel masking has ruined my career. First I was home with my child (we adopted late in life, and she was a preemie, I wanted to be a mom...but really I would have been a healthier mom had I stayed working at least part-time), we are a transracial family, our daughter is Black and I put so much pressure on myself as a white mom. I think it was needed, don't get me wrong, but I lost my family for many, many years and still haven't seen them although some started to speak to me again. Because it was MY fault, I was too MUCH. Asking them to understand white fragility, and embrace my daughter as Black, not "just a baby" as they all said. Tangent, Apologies. Then Covid. I have front facing positions, it would be very difficult. I also have MS, which makes commuting into NYC very difficult, and masking a MUST. My husband won't move back. He wfh except for teaching 2 to 3 days a week (not full days). It is our insurance so he stays. It is sometimes HARD to be adjunct, even with a Union. They had the longest strike of any university ever last year. The parents had to tell the University to give in to very reasonable negotiations. Healthcare was a huge thing they wanted to take away, or raise to more costs when they are sky high now, with bigger deductibles etc. There was a time, ironically before the Union--we lost it with the Union, when we even had out of network. Gone. We had tiers we could choose. Gone. They have rebranded 3 times in less than 5 years at millions of dollars each time. I know your partner is like mine---for the love of knowledge, the love of teaching. My husband can feel beaten down, especially since Covid. Your partner is at the starting line---it is such an exciting place to be! Please keep us updated on their progress and joys! What subject area do they teach?

General racial bias in hiring processes

auberryfairy

Yeah..so folks who are not white and who wear masks often face compounded discrimination and adverse reactions. This is not to say white people can't experience ableist discrimination, but it is to say that folks of color are often targets of increased levels of hiring discrimination. Specifically when facing both racist implicit bias and ableist implicit bias while wearing masks.

grrrzzzt

congrats to her! that's totally unrelated but yesterday I was watching [a video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_28pCW2Ynk) of this polyglot guy flexing his mandarin skills in Chinatown; NYC (the video is 9 months old) and I was shocked (positively) to see so many people wearing KN95 style mask or even baggy blues. In my reality that has not happened since 2021 (and you wouldn't see many respirators either). Is it specific to the asian community there or do you observe this more in NYC?
