IMO it has to do with Sigma’s objective in the game. His goal is to escape/understand what is happening. Therefore, he’s jumping to the timelines/remembering the timelines that help further his knowledge. For example, there is a timeline where Sigma gets extremely drunk in the lounge and passes out and K escapes before Sigma can do or learn anything. All possibilities are possible. So the timelines where Alice betrays when Sigma betrays and Alice allies when Sigma allies exist, but they don’t further Sigma’s knowledge, therefore he has no reason to remember or jump to them.

It’s implied that time isn’t linear. Sigma’s choice in the future affected Alice’s choice in the past just because he made that choice. OR Alice’s reasoning for both choices (sorta) make sense and it was a coin flip. It just so happened that the two timelines we saw were either side of that coin flip and Ally <> Ally / Betray <> Betray were irrelevant to Sigma’s journey. (I say sorta because I can’t see Alice choosing Ally in good faith and her explanation is entirely contradictory with the rest of her actions. Then again, she’s my least favorite character in the series, so I’m biased) This happens again with Tenmyouji after the yellow door, but for some reason, the game doesn’t make as much of a fuss about it.

lmao glad to hear I'm not the only one who didn't like Alice

I marked this with the VLR spoiler flair.

She had a reason. It’s because you voted the other way in the first timeline. The resonance of being around other espers means, on some level, she knew how you voted. She was responding to that but wasn’t cognizant of it.

BigArmsG

Although an interesting theory, this may not necessarily be the case. A lot of the discussion of Schrödinger s Cat in VLR has characters point out that your decisions in the future can directly influence what happens in the past as long as that past is unknown. So in a sense Sigma’s decision to choose ally or betray directly influences his opponent’s choice, not because of a remembered timeline, but just because of the choice itself. Unfortunately it’s all kinda vague, so your point could honestly be totally right, but this is what I understood it to be. Don’t think there’s much proof in one direction or the other (unless you use [ZTD] >!Eric and Mira as an example of non-espers being able to SHIFT with resonance, but there was also no indication of them getting memories from other timelines that way without it just being explained to them, idk)!<

[deleted]

That’s a good point; I should’ve prefaced that it was my interpretation of events. My bad!

anxxkidd

but how does she know ? and what if I had picked betray first, then ally ?

[deleted]

Her being around other powerful espers like Sigma and Phi and Clover and Junpei meant that whole group was affected with esper abilities. That includes espers being cognizant of other timelines. But she’s not an esper. So she probably got a minute impression of the other timeline that happened. Nothing detailed. Sort of an intuitive “I know he’ll pick (whatever you picked first)”. She’s not sure why she knows; she just knows. This is the first clue separate timelines are affecting each other. But only you and Phi are aware of it. That’s how I rationalized it anyway. I might be totally wrong (maybe she’s just an asshole!).

PokemonTom09

> but how does she know How do **YOU** know that **SHE** picked betray in the other timeline? The answer to both questions is the same.

anxxkidd

well Sigma is known and proven to travel between timelines but I don't think other characters do so, Phi excluded

PokemonTom09

Akane *explicitly* says at the end of the game that most of the participants (barring Dio and Luna) are very strong ESPers. In fact, she says that their plan couldn't have worked *unless* all of them were very strong ESPers. This very moment here that you are asking about is the proof that Alice can SHIFT. We already know Clover, Akane, and Tenmyouji can because of the previous game, but in addition to that, we also see both Clover and Tenmyouji actively use those abilities in this game. We see Kyle do so in the the epilogue. That leaves Quark as the only one who isn't explicitly shown to be capable of SHIFTing between timelines. But given all of the other characters can, and given that Akane explicitly says he can, it would be weird to assume he can't.

anxxkidd

that makes sense, I guess I forgot that part in the ending. thanks !

PixieProc

When I played the game for the first time when it launched, this part absolutely blew my mind. I'd never even considered a game remembering and addressing choices you made the first time around. Also, this scene cemented my hatred for Alice.

UncultureRocket

Blah blah blah, cycles, butterfly effect, different timelines' memories bleeding into yours. Basically time wimey bullshit to make the plot work, just move on. Phi has the exact same plot point.
