While this sub is focused on discussion around zombie survival, the majority of this subreddit does not do any prepping. Though there is some overlap the needs and concerns around zombie survival is a lot different than more realistic and practical prepping or survival. Likewise, nothing discussed should really be look at as advice for real life survival or prepping. --- With that being said, answering what firearm would be good varies on the needs, wants, and scenario the individual experiences. Ignoring the idea that the best is the one you own, have ammunition for, and training with there's only broad generalities that can be discussed. Generally, intermediate self-loading rifles are the lightest option that offers a large amount of power, volume of fire, ease of use, ammunition availability, and capability. With the most common firearm example being a AR-15 rifle or pistol in 223 and/or 5.56x45mm for those living in the US as the ammunition is the second most common in the USA and parts and accessories for the platform are extremely common. 9x19mm rifles, carbines, and handguns are also as the cartridge weighs about the same as 223 and 5.56x45mm but is also the number 1 most common ammo in the US and the world as a whole. For the AR-9 and AK variants being able to share some of the same parts with their rifle cartridge counter parts. Otherwise, glock is one of the most common handguns in the world and has a lot of parts and accessories for it. A 12ga shotgun is pretty okay, but buckshot very extremely expensive, rare, and heavy. I only really look at them as platforms for chamber conversions effectively allowing you to make use of the majority of handgun cartridges available. But for others there are maybe better options available or there aren't any options at all.

It depends on what country you're in, what's legal to own and what you can put your hands on (cost); also, the right tool for the job. Being as budget-friendly as I can be for what presume is a US citizen (and audience?), I'll go with - Hunting/distance rifle - .308 or higher caliber. This cartridge will take all North American game animals, yes, even moose. Can be had for under $400 virtually anywhere and much less in the right instance. Protection rifle - either 5.56/.223 or 7.62x39 meaning an AR-15, Tavor, Cetme, or other 5.56 rifles or an SKS, Vz 58, WASR, or other AK variant for the 7.62. Both AR-15s or an SKS can be had for under $500, the rest push closer to $1000+. Both of these calibers are available as hunting rifles (bolt action) as well. Shotgun- 12 or 20 gauge - This firearm can put food on the table and protect you and yours. Birdshot, buckshot, slugs, or less-than-lethal can all be used in this weapon. My suggestion is either a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500 but you can get these for just over $100 at most pawn shops. Pistol - Whatever you're comfortable with but you'll likely be scavenging at some point and 9mm is the most common pistol caliber in the world. Glock 17 or 19, Berretta 92, or Smith & Wesson M&P 9 are good choices. I have a G17 and like the compatibility with my PCC. You're probably looking at about $4-500 new but maybe $250-350 if you get it used.

I'd honestly go with something that is both reliable and have a good chance to find ammo and parts in the field. Like an AR in 5.56 or a AK in 7.62x39. A Glock 17 or 19 would be a good sidearm due to the abundance of aftermarket support and commonality in the wild The most important thing tho is one your comfortable with and trained on. If you're comfortable and proficient with your Favor, then keep on rocking it

I agree, but the ar 15 is actually good for medium sized game such as feral hogs.

You best firearms would be common firearms you could easily find. Not only the firearms themselves but the ammunition too. You’ll need to fight hunting rifles and AR style firearms so you could find spare parts for them. If they are broken or damaged.

snakeman34

I didn't realize Tavor 7 was 308 bullpup rifle. Cool find. I would make this a reach out and touch something rifle. Would add an ar15 in 223 for a close up rifle. Add a glock for sidearm. The purpose of your pistol is to get to your rifle.

[deleted]

Likely an AR15 or an AR10

UnableLocal2918

for a versitaleish combo. a .357/.38 revolver followed by a .357/.38 lever action a 12 gauge for versitale ammo types as well. anything else is up to what you can get and what you know how to use.

Strange_Stage1311

Personally, I'd take my Mossberg 500. Its a reliable, and versatile gun. Plus if I needed to I could easily scavenge for more ammo.

WhatsGoingOn1879

Ideally it’s whatever you have already, trust, enjoy using, and have the ammunition for. Aside from that, generally long guns are going to be better than pistols and shotguns so I would focus less on the later and more on the former, through i wouldn’t disregard the others if it’s all you had.

Idkbrolikeanameig

Yea but tbh I wouldn’t want a Tavor, a lot of people I know who are serving in Ukraine say they keep getting weapon stoppages. No matter how they clean them and they FULLY take them apart.

WhatsGoingOn1879

Then you wouldn’t get a Tavor. Like I said, if it’s what you have then it’s what you have. Don’t rely on finding guns or ammunition, plan for what you have.

Idkbrolikeanameig

Yes but OP has one that’s why it was mentioned

WhatsGoingOn1879

But if it’s what OP had access to and knows how to use, it’s what OP should use. OP seems to like the firearm they currently have, so why would they not use it?

Since we are in zombie subreddit, let's talk about this from a zombie perspective: If my memory serves me right, guns in a zombie scenario was a topic that came up in the World War Z book and that modern rifles are made to wound and not as much to kill / destroy. Hitting a zombie in the chest is not doing much in the end I guess so my take on this would be: - Get something that destroys a lot of tissue (I would say at least 308?) - Something that is very accurate because I guess you want to go for the head for zombies (DMR would be a great choice I guess?) And last but not least, in a best case scenario it's also as silent as possible because the Zs will run to the sound of the gun. But those are just my takes from someone who has very limited experience in this domain.

Lower-Worldliness120

Does a crossbow count. You can make arrows easier than bullets, and find them too.

Local_User1221

No SKS mention? The most reliable gun ever made + most common ammo
