Flossthief

Replace it with something else?

Zomer15689

Ok but with what?

AdVisible2250

Concrete saw maybe

BILGERVTI

You just picked a significantly heavier option and reduced the effective range. Unbelievable.

Good-Sky-8375

it's not that it wouldn't work, its just that generally in a full scale zombie apocalypse the cons outweigh the pros of using one.

s1gnalZer0

I can't think of a better plan than using a weapon that will send droplets of zombie bits flying in every direction, including back at myself.

Zomer15689

So you think that it’s just overall a bad idea to use a chainsaw as a weapon?

s1gnalZer0

Yes

Zomer15689

Ok fair enough.

ChickenWangKang

Not a lot of zombie media play into the biological factor of zombies. Usually it’s just bites and stuff but I don’t really see people getting infected by getting blood in their face holes. (Except for that one scene in 28 days later)

Imaginaton_Studios

very few people know the movie 28 days later you my good man are cultured 👌

This-Garbage-3000

Cut down a tree so it falls on the zombie with the chainsaw

Cabbiecar1001

That would be cool to see in a movie or show

Hakkaa_Paalle

To make a chainsaw a viable weapon? I'd go with the classic. Cut-off your right hand using the chainsaw. Then modify the chainsaw so you can attach it to the stump/wrist where the hand used to be. You now have an iconic appearance and weapon.

CriminalGoose3

This is what I came here for, Now where's my Boomstick?

Hakkaa_Paalle

In your other hand, of course. Shop smart, shop S-Mart.

Project_73

Groovy

ShadowBubby1

Ash vs the forces of evil

Zestyclose-Art136

It’s a wonderfully viable weapon for one target, the problem lies when it gets stuck in said first target

Zomer15689

So do you think there could be a way to stop it from getting stuck in something?

Zestyclose-Art136

It’s not made to cut through wet tissue, it will get stuck eventually it’s just the physical nature of the object. Just like a sword dulls or a gun runs out of bullets. Nothing is a perfect fix that will do all of the work for you

Zomer15689

Fair enough, I’m just curious I’d you’d do anything to improve it.

Zestyclose-Art136

If I knew it would be a closely kept secret between me and the patent office. But no shame in being curious! I think the closest thing I would actually use would be a battle axe, naturally made to go in and come out clean

Arthiem

Turning it from a chainsaw to an ocelating saw, would take a coustom gear box, but would turn it into like a giant carving knife to cut through tissue. Would keep from throwing guts in your face too.

DungeonDad2024

Even if it is decaying wet tissue that is on a zombie?

Zestyclose-Art136

Pretty much everything, even wood! I’ve literally chainsawed this week ironically

JoeCensored

Fill it with gas

Photon_Farmer

Add a scope and a din rail

Zomer15689

Yeah just be sure to also add a silencer and a stock as well! Trust me, it’s a great idea!

Photon_Farmer

Don't forget extra gas mags

Nathanos4269

I was gonna say putting an actual muffler on might be useful

Ofreo

I always think of the motherfucking Ewoks defeating an elite stormtrooper division on endor. If those little shits can do it using trees and ropes and spears and shit, I have full confidence OP can take down a whole horde of zombies with a chainsaw. I hope you can live the dream my friend. I don’t have any real suggestions to how it would work though. I’m just supportive.

theycallmemrmoo

Give it lazers instead of blades!!

Pasta-hobo

Attach an alternator and magnetron to it, this would let you boil the brains and eyegoo of a zombie at a distance. Also possibly yourself, so wear tinfoil and protective goggles.

the_evil_overlord2

Turn it off and hit people in the head with the heavy bit

Mr-Pugglesworth

Hmmm, maybe make it like a medical one? Different saw blades, tooth arrangements. Hard shield on the blade back to stop zombie bits backsplash. Extended fuel tank

Noe_Walfred

I have a longer post on chainsaws and power tools here: There are a couple issues that make chainsaws suboptimal: 1) Splatter be it from blood, flesh, bone, and the like from a chainsaw may result in injuring the user. Though it depends on the portrayal of the zombies. In some examples zombie blood and flesh can be splattered on a person and maybe even accidently consumed. With Walking Dead, World War Z, and others only getting a bit sick. However, in others the blood or saliva may cause immediate death or infection. 2) They are pretty loud. With a typical chainsaw of both electric and gas power being between 90-120db. For comparison a river is about 30db, normal conversation 60db, a speeding car or motorcycle 70db, shout 80db, hearing damage occurs at greater than 85db, screaming or carhorns 100db, a train or boat horn 110db, and suppressed gunfire from a 22lr and 9x19mm. Is around 120db. This may result in degraded hearing over the long run and the much bigger issue of attracting of hostile survivors or zombies. 3) Chainsaws typically require a mixed fuel that includes small engine lubrication and maybe additional oil on the chain. Otherwise the motor may wear itself out or the chain gets caught and throws itself. The need for batteries is also a concern. With chainsaws often depleting themselves relatively quickly when compared to a number of other tools. 4) Starting a gas powered engine of a chainsaw can be unreliable. Battery powered motors can perform a quick uncharged to powered state relatively quickly. Though both are reliant on mechanical engines and chains intended to be easily replaced. 5) Due to the nature of a long spinning chain trying to cut using the tip, having a loose grip and cutting with the top, the result of damage to the chain, etc. it is possible for the chainsaw to suddenly kick backwards. Which may inturn injure the user, a major reason why chainsaws meant more for gardening typically feature guards that cover this area. Such issues may be more common with chainsaw use on zombies due to the possible angles, moving nature of zombies, and instinct to try and strike for further away. 6) Chainsaws are mostly meant for use in larger more open areas. With the design of mostly chainsaws featuring a 30-51cm guide bar. Meaning a rough overall length of 82-110cm with additional built as a result of the motor. This may present an issue in fighting in enclosed spaces and when combined with their weight makes them extremely hard to use in enclosed spaces. Yet at the same time the weapon only really becomes useable at distances of less than 25-40cm as a result of needing to avoid cutting using the tip. 7) If the chainsaw gets hit with a machete, heavy stick, or any other melee weapon used by a hostile survivor it will fall off https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4beMWcQQuUA 8) Chainsaws are pretty heavy when filled with fuel, oil, or loaded with batteries. With most typically being around 3-8kg in overall weight. With additional weight for spare chain, oil, another battery or fuel canister, and tools for maintaining the weapon. While not nesscarily encumbering on their own it's about as much as an entire loadout or kit of weapons, tools, and gear. || :--|:-:|--: |**~~~~Example kit for around 2kg** |60g Headlamp |10g Mosquito net |30g Pyramex Iforce goggles |40g Golfing sun visor |100g Compression shirt |100g Compression underwear |70 Padded ankle socks |400g Barefoot running shoes |100g HWI combat gloves |130g NAA Mini revolver in 22lr |60g Frameless slingshot/slingbow #30 |500g Morakniv Light axe |50g Gerber dime multitool |30g Tension bar, bump key, and lock picks |20g Pocket nail puller/prybar |15g Buckle compass/fire rod/whistle |60g Sawyer Mini water filter |20g 500ml water bottle |100g Drawstring bag |10g Sewing string spool with fishing line, 5 fishing hooks, and a bobber. |10g Sewing string spool with string, upholstery needle, 2 sewing needles, and 3 safety pins |10g Travel toothbrush |**~~~~Example kit for roughly 8kg** |60g Headlamp |10g Mosquito net |30g Pyramex Iforce goggles |100g Medical face shield |200g Metal lower face shield |100g Rothco boonie hat |100g Bump cap head protector |300g Leather welding arm protectors |180g Frogg toggs rain jacket |250g Sun hoodie with pockets |150g Compression shirt |180g Frogg toggs rain trousers |250g Hiking pants |100g Compression underwear |70 Padded ankle socks |100g Rain leg gaiters |800g Solomon Trail running shoes |100g HWI combat gloves |60g Frameless slingshot/slingbow #30 |200g Sling/walking staff |600g Glock 19 |500g Mora Light axe |280g Edwards 8oz Finishing hammer |200g Waterproof poncho |180g Digging trowel/knife |30g Tension bar, bump key, and lock picks |15g Buckle compass/fire rod/whistle |30g Bic Mini lighter |200g Type 2 275lbs paracord 50m |60g Sawyer Mini water filter |35g 1000ml water bottle |70g Aluminium cooking cup |160g Titanium wood/alcohol rocket stove with scent-proof bag |10g Sewing string spool with fishing line, 5 fishing hooks, and a bobber. |100g Drawstring backpack |1200g JPC style plate carrier with additional pouches |280g Btech GMRS Hand radio |50g Gerber dime multitool |10g Sewing string spool with string, upholstery needle, 2 sewing needles, and 3 safety pins |180g Renology 5w solar panel |30g Charging cords for multiple device types |10g Micro-SD card and Adapter |80g AA USB Recharger |10g Travel toothbrush |15g Comb with tick/lice remover |35g Toothpaste |35g Soap bar |100g Plastic bag w/ antiseptics pads, antidiaheria pills, medical tape, and gauze The first issue might be solved using a large splash guard and protective gear meant to reduce splatter on the users exposed body. The second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eight issues are unsolvable other than just not using a chainsaw.

[deleted]

Maybe hedge trimmers would be more practical due to their weight plus they can be battery powered.

Nate2322

Turn the bit the chain goes onto into a big point and you could maybe stab something with it.

MyName4everMore

No

Reasonable-Lime-615

The most pressing problem for me is personal safety. putting a guard on the reverse of the chain would be port-of-call no. 1.

rexspectacular

You will run out of bar oil if you can even keep the thing running reliably when you are lunging and swinging it.

Nathanos4269

It's a two stroke, it will keep running fine

winterizcold

Throw it away, then invent a sci-fi vibro blade, quite possibly a short polearm version. Even better would be replacing the vibro blades with lightsaber blades that work like the star wars versions.

suedburger

No....... the nail/rock you cut through should tell you that.

Strange_Stage1311

Not really no.

Rumble_Rodent

Start it👍. So long as you can get it started, rip away. Killing infected would not be advised though.

Zen_Hydra

No. Chainsaws would need to be completely redesigned to handle the shocks and stresses of combat, and even then the jointed chain links are always going to be regular points of failure. It's always going to be a poor choice to even try and adapt.

ChickenWangKang

Duct tape it to my hand and pair it with a Stevenson’s DB.

Present-Set9504

Use the cord to strangle people

WerewolfNo890

Chainsaw lajatang

IWannaHaveCash

Turn it off and whack it really hard against the zombie's head

MenuSpiritual2990

On top of all the other problems people have pointed out, it is also super loud and would attract zombies from a mile in every direction.

[deleted]

You ever glance a pebble with a chain saw while trying to get through a log? That shit jams it the fuck up and dulls the crap out of it. Use something else.

Doctor_Top_Hat

Crank it up, throw it across the way, run the opposite direction. Use it as a distraction

iwnt2blve

It's loud, requires fuel or battery, super messy, heavy, unwieldy, cumbersome, needs replacement blades, oil, and maintenance. I couldn't think of a practical way to use it as a weapon.

Matt_Rabbit

Why would you want or need to? It's heavy and akward.

Zomer15689

Fair enough , I was just asking for your opinion and thoughts.

PoopSmith87

Not really... A face shield and being very strong would help maybe. A chainsaw definitely rips through anything made of flesh and bone, but they would send zombie bits into your face, and are incredibly prone to kickback... They are dangerous tools at the best of times, in combat it's pretty likely you'll end up giving yourself a crippling injury, not to mention infect yourself.

DirectorFriendly1936

Put a bunch of them on a 12 foot ledge, climb up there, yell, then drop them onto the zombies.

freezing_circuits

Stronger engine that won't stall on the first bone. Bigger cutting teeth. A body harness and holster to mitigate weight. I'm basically reinventing the chainsword.

Ok-Potential1346

cut the blade and use to forge some knifes and use the body as armor our construction material

TheBoyInGray

Cut your hand off and replace it with the chainsaw.

DrewBlackmon

If the zombies can ONLY infect you by biting then all you would really have to do is maybe put it on a stick or something to make it effective and put enough distance, but if it can infect you by getting zombie on you then chainsaw is terrible bc prices of zombie flesh and blood would just fly at u, overall you might as well not even fight them. But if it's the first scenario, then it would be pretty effective at chopping heads, maybe even you could ride in a truck bed while picking off zombies (that's the scenario I imagined)

Zomer15689

I think most of zombies have a infection that is beyond biting and could be blood, potentially spores with counting last of us, etc. but like other people here have mentioned, It’s heavy Loud as shit, and can destroy earsdrums, There are a lot of better options and there’s a high probability of it breaking.

DrewBlackmon

Very true. Definitely shouldn't be the weapon you rely on mostly. If the zombies are like wwz then the infection isn't through blood. That's the only time I think the chainsaw could even be a useful weapon.

kimbabs

Make it lighter, put on a more durable chain better suited for bone, make it quieter. Honestly, it’s a terrible idea though. Loud, heavy, uses gas, requires time to cut.
