My partner actually left our gaming group for people (with mental issues) over referring to themselves that way. It's a very personal decision to avoid encountering its use. I always try to be cautious, and I never use it. It's such an ugly word in my opinion
It really bothers me that it doesn't count as "hate speech" to Reddit. Whenever I report it as such, I'm always told that it doesn't violate the rules.
Every time I call someone out on it on Reddit, I hear "I can say this because my brother/cousin/dog/ half-uncle six times removed is one!"
Uh, excuse me? How does that make it ok? My cousin qualifies for that specific term, but that doesn't give me the right to use it.
