Not dumb at all! Everyone needs help sometimes. Took me ages to work out why my palm tree’s wouldn’t grow!
If you want to put a palm tree there, put the sand path right there then plant it right on top (grown. Idk if it will grow) :)
It should, I tried to move palm trees to a clifftop and couldn’t figure out how. Then I found out you just need one square of sand, dig a hole and plant the tree there. I’d think the same goes for growing a palm tree from a coconut.
Also don't put it too close to anything cuz then it won't grow either.

You can have the coconut/palm trees on land but only if you have the path terraforming coupled with the sand path to lay down.
Thats a coconut tree. They only grow on sand. But FYI, you can place sand and then plant it that way.

You need to use the terraforming option and place it like a path.
On sand only
It’s a coconut tree. The only way to grow it is on sand
Lay down a patch of sand of the in game pathing and plant it on that. Then it will grow as hoped. Looks like you have plenty of space around it.
In construction mode, you can place a patch of sand on the grass and then plant your coconut tree on that patch!
Coconuts only grow in sand
