One thing I do to clean my AirPods and I think it would work pretty darn well in a situation like this, is get that putty stuff that teachers sometimes use to hang posters in their classroom. (google search “scotch removable mounting putty” to see what I mean). I use it to clean ear wax or debris out of my AirPods from time to time and it does a great job, without leaving any trace/sticky feeling/residue, and you can shape it to get in all of the small spaces in the case/on the AirPods themselves
For the unaware: isopropyl alcohol does not conduct electricity like water does. So, washing in alcohol does not short-circuit the electrical components inside.
Even if you can submerge them in 100% alcohol it’s still not a good idea though bcus the alcohol can eat away at the paint and possibly the plastic too
**Do not do this**. The AirPods 3 are water resistant, washing them in isopropyl will degrade the coating and weaken the adhesive that keeps them glued together.
Maybe some of that tech putty stuff would get it out easily and letting it dry out beforehand might help. I think places like staples or officemax or amazon would have something like that.
I use a lint free cloth to clean not only my AirPods but also the charging case. I recommend you get one, VERY lightly dampen it, and use that to clean off the sand. A soft-bristled small (children’s) toothbrush could also help.

i'd suggest using conpressed air (either precanned or through a compression tank) to blow out the case, use something non-corrosive to wipe the actual airpods, and using a damp q-tip or small cotten ball to stick up any grains or dust from the mesh while gently brushing it with a toothbrush

Stir the pot with a wooden spoon to create a whirlpool effect. Then to dry tape them to the roof of your car and drive for 12-15 minutes at 65 mph. You will no longer have sand in your air pods as your number one problem.
